Atop Mont St.Joseph sits a 19th century chapel built by Notre-Dame-des-Bois pioneers.Nature lovers will be rewarded with highly diverse plant; over 125 bird species and some 20 kinds of mammals, including moose and whitetailed deer. For overnight or long-term visits, campsites and rustic huts are available to visitors at different locations throughout the park. The park’s restaurant also serves up organic, fair-trade and local menu to tempt all kind of appetites. The closest centre is Notre-Dame-des-Bois, only kilometres away from the park’s welcome centre. It is home to several inns, bed and breakfasts restaurants and other amenities for travellers to the region. For lunch, try the quaint La Creperie La Bonne Étoile for its buckwheat crepes and in-store antique shop while its neighbouring bed and breakfast offers a full menu and lovely view of the park from its back terrace.Mont-Megantic provincial park is located roughly 55 minutes from Sherbrooke. For more information about the park and the activities and services offered, visit www.astrolab-parc-national-mont-megantic.org and www.sepaq.com/pq/mme SARAH ROGERS Rene Doyon speaks to the media next to the observatory's telescope R.Proulx Trucking 242-2062 Cell: 777-2062 FORET , SKENNENKOWA FOREST WALKING TRAILS 2 km GARDEN RETREATS MATURE WOODS WATERFALLS PICNIC AREA LAKE JULY / AUGUST OPEN DAILY 10 am - 6 pm MAY / JUNE / SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER OPEN WEEKENDS ONLY 10 am - 4 pm ADMISSION: $6 cash only SKENNENKOWA IS A MOHAWK WORD THAT MEANS GREAT PEACE 750A, ch.Bolton Centre, St-Etienne-de-Bolton, QC (450) 297-2086 V* .o' fC?.cb < jY «S’, > tVt Pic* ^ ' .AY- Ta/o V " L 'f* V\ hats * hoodies Le Store A Hidden Treasure - A Recession Store Pasta - Furniture - Gift Ideas 31 Lakeside, Knowlton GOUTTIÈRES FOSTER R.B Q 8286-6179-20 5 SEAMLESS GUTTERS GUTTER GUARDS AND LEAF PROTECTION • Eliminates gutter cleaning • Gutter guards specially made for a tin roof LARGE SELECTION OF COLOURS RESIDENTIAL AND COMMERCIAL 35 BROMONT ST.SUTTON QC JOE 2K0 450-538-9975 • • - v KELLY MCDEVTIT * :»*F; *'*s4 atHrt The hills and cliffs in Howth, Ireland outside Dublin EuroTrip When life (and weather) in the Townships has got you down, there is always an escape.By Kelly McDevitt —- * —hen I announced to friends a few % / months ago that I would be back- \i \t packing in Europe this spring, the T V universal reaction followed the lines of “You’re so lucky! I wish I could do that.” followed by strict instructions to “take lots of pictures.” Like them, a few years ago the notion that I would ever travel to the coast of Ireland, the Louvre in Paris, Lake Geneva or climb II Duomo in Florence (twice) would have seemed impossible, even laughable; the universe just doesn’t like me enough. Then in 2007,1 signed up for a trip to Italy organized by Roya Abouzia, professor at Bishops University and Creative Arts coordinator at Champlain College.Roya taught us how to safely, effectively and cheaply travel without a teacher or tour guide holding our hands.Without her, I would have never accomplished the three-week, six-country tour I embarked on this May.Many Quebecers come from European descent (Irish, British, French, Dutch) and, especially here in the Townships, have a strong sense of that heritage and culture.Visiting Ireland gave me a better understanding of my own background, as well as an appreciation for the strong currents of Irish culture that persist in this area, like in my home- town of Richmond.Quebec students are fortunate when it comes to traveling abroad. Our tuition costs are ridiculously low (something we should remember to be grateful for) so saving for a trip is easier. Also, our school-years end just before the summer tourist rush, when airfare and accommodations are cheapest. We also have the advantage of bilingualism.Language issues that are often a point of contention here become an asset overseas, especially in Europe.Chances are, if you can’t be understood in English, someone nearby will speak French or vice versa and appreciate your efforts to communicate even if you struggle. The most important thing Roya taught me was to see the opportunity behind every experience while travelling, be it embracing the bilingualism we grew up in, trying new foods (octopus - chewy, but good), or just thinking outside the tourist box. Some of my favorite memories from my trip had nothing to do with tourist hotspots.Sure, the Eiffel Tower and the Colosseum were great, but the cliffs in Howth outside Dublin were better, and they were free.In Switzerland, I witnessed four cygnets (baby swans) hatch and take to the water -what tour guide can offer that?Moments like these turned my busy vacation into a memorable holiday, making the whole thing worthwhile.“You’re not tourists,” Roya told us, as we left Rome two years ago.“You’re travellers. You’ve gone into the world and come back more knowledgeable, experienced citizens of the world.” I’ve heard rumours that she is planning another European trip for next year; my sister is thinking about it, and I highly recommend other interested parties to do the same.METRO PLOUFFE 20 Avenue des Pins, Bedford 450 Meigs N., Farnham 460 St-Patrice West, Magog 4801 Blvd.Bourque, Rock Forest 1175 King St.E.f Sherbrooke « ¦ ¦ ¦r-.:., « - .; .•'ty&'.V'',' ¦M.¦•• §11* ¦v $Mà tifb V JT^ * M§fS#8 $ *- ¦ rSEjsf ONCE YOU GET HERE, YOU GET IT.to obtain more information on our special offers VISITJAY-P.CA TRAVEL & VACATION • BROME COUNTY NEWS Tuesday, June 16, 2009 • page 17 m?r: :¦ : : ;V- li ¦ 111 ¦ ¦:.p • ' ; ,v.; '• ; ¦ - ." ¦ v r> ¦'* ^ - : ' ¦" ‘ ' ' .> : ¦ 'V miMm m ¦¦ «J .¦ » " • • * ¦ ?¦ pi ' Jfc page 18 • TRAVEL & VACATION • BROME COUNTY NEWS Tuesday, June 16, 2009 ANDY RICO — ' ' 1-; Ml- * .s al!|r| ;sb mi 2 S *9 :> va ft i ¦ am 9E3 riàdU,.- i-; .l~c- »T*| ?* OGA *#¦ r -a**- ••V; ¦ > : ' ÈKÉÜÉÿ?^?r ?* 4 ¦"Jj pafijsas %• * i mm ï&t&te&miai CLASSIFIEDS WORK!
