Weekly Guide to Arts & Entertainment in the Eastern Townships INSIDE Fiddling Fiddlers seePage 16 INSIDE Banjo Dan seePage 2 _______) THE RECORD, June 26 - July 2, 2009 Raising Hell By Corrinna Pole Sherbrooke After months of refining their musical approach, the blues band Hell Kats are ready to reverberate the soul of the Golden Lion Pub and Brewery this Friday.“We've been working on the repertoire for the last year, so it’s time to start playing outside,” said second-generation bluesman Todd Monty, who has grown up immersed in the style.“We've got some R&B songs, and I mean real R&B, blues songs and some original songs 1 wrote.1 like the traditional sound blues not the modern day stuff.Musically it’s nothing complicated but it’s all in the arrangement.” When thinking of Townships’ blues many locals may recognize the Monty name.Monty’s father is world-class guitar player and guitar maker Brian Monty, who also used to live and play in the Townships.Blues come in many shades and the Hell Kats features six local musicians with diverse day jobs from many areas of the Townships, including Magog, Sherbrooke, Saint-Élie and Lawrence Colony.“I sing and take care of most of the rhythm.I’ve thought of myself as a rhythm specialist,” said Monty.“Most songs I cover are original like Willie Dickson.I like to do songs that nobody knows just because the more popular ones are, well, over done.” There was not much thought involved in forming Hell Kats; it created itself almost naturally.According to Monty he is just “trying to get back into the guitar business.” “I’ve always played music, so it wasn’t really a decision,” he said.“I bought a house in Magog and wasn’t living in Ottawa where I used to play.I met a few guys and we hit it off and here we are.” Monty left the Townships to study his father’s luthier trade and add it to the welder and machinist trades he already possessed.“Every guitar I played.I’ve built,” he said.“I’ve been in the steel racket for the last ten years and, it’s a cliché, but I've come to a crossroads.I’ve never thought of playing for money but it is time to do that.Music is who I am, it’s what I want to do.” Starting at 10 p.m.the band will play for three hours and Monty's aspiration is to end the show on a high note.“I’d like to have an all-star jam at the end,” said Monty.“I’ve invited a few other musicians, if they show up then great, if not we’ll keep doing what we’re doing.” Monty also expects this first show will not be the last Townshippers will hear from the Hell Kats.“I’d like to play at least twice a month,” said Monty.“I’m looking forward to getting out of the basement. When you have people in front of you that counts for a lot.” The Hellcats will take the stage at the Golden Lion Pub and Brewery in Lennoxville this Friday at 10 p.m.A cover charge of $10 will be charged at the door.COURTESY ¦A Li fc Groovy Nation • CIDI’s Latest • Jim Napier’s Summer Six 70% New Canadian Releases Country, Folk, Jazz, Pop and more Local Regional and World News Updates Weather and Sports coverage Timely Interviews, Local Artists Programs serving our community Community Radio CJMQ 88.9 FM Have you listened to us lately? Now at 2000 Watts! 819-822-1838 or 819-570-2094 Your Home on the FM dial CJMQ 88.9 FM At Home, At work In the car, On the go Tune us in 88.9 FM Listen Live www.cimn.fm Now at 184 Queen Street Lennoxville cjmqnews(tt)yahoo.ca iTHK, page 2 June 26 - July 2, 2009 RECORD - TALK =——— Blazing Bluegrass and Banjo Dan Ê 0*\ «r *1.- Banjo Dan and the Mid-nite Plowboys It’s that time of year again.Summer’s back, and with it one of the top acoustic bands on this part of the planet. On Saturday, July 18, Banjo Dan and the Mid-nite Plowboys return to the Haskell Opera House in Derby Line, Vermont and Stanstead, Quebec, bringing North Hatley Antique & Folk Art Show .• y tÉrc^l their high-energy homegrown blue-grass music to the region’s finest concert venue.Show time is 7:30 pm.Long known for their dynamic instrumental work and soaring harmonies, the Plowboys feature a fascinating and ever-changing repertoire blending country, folk, and traditional material with finely-crafted original songs, many dealing with life in the North Country. The Haskell concert will highlight new songs from their latest CD, “Fire in the Sugarhouse,” TICKETS AVAILABLE AT Galerie Jeannine Blais 102, Main, North Hatley 819-842-2784 Claude Couture Antiquaire 172, Wellington N„ Sherbrooke 819-820-2684 www.nordiiutleyantiques.com -——- July 3“», 4th & 5th Curling Club 3245, ch.Capelton North Hatley (QC) Opening Night Gala $30.00 Friday, July 3rd 6:30 p.m.- 9 p.m.O’dourves, wine Os.beer included GENERAL ADMISSION $5.00 July 4*.10 a.m.-6 p.m.x ' - .July 5*,10 a.m.-5 p.m.lively fiddle and banjo tunes, gospel quartets, old favorites and a few curveballs. You just never know with these guys! Awards Show 2009 The memories are fadeless! By Maurice and Tanya Singfield Well, we finally held this year’s STOP! show featuring all of the contestants and awarding prizes to the winners this past Sunday.Everyone had a great time, and several of the judges showed up as well. The entire show was recorded live at the Maison de la Culture de Waterloo, and will soon be presented on Canal Vox for your enjoyment.Four awards were handed out to three of the six bands that had participated over the past 8 months in GDI's battle of the bands TV series.A total of six bands were initially chosen from the applicants to participate in the TV presentations, performing their original compositions live in recording studio SEM 1492 for the Stop! Cameras.Six judges (Bryan Singfield, Claude Prud’homme, Hélène Lavoie, Géneviève Hamel, Roger Quirion and Mario Trudel) chose the top three winners (1st, 2nd & 3rd) who were honoured on Sunday evening and given GDI’s version of a Grammy, a miniature Stop! Sign.First place was taken by Fadeless, a band from Asbestos, second place by Shefford County band Insane Memories and third place went to In Cipher from Granby. The People’s Choice award was won by Insane Memories, giving them two Stop! Signs for the evening, and was based on the total number of votes accumulated by a telephone and internet (rcmmedia.org) voting system set up by Radio Communautaire Missisquoi (RCM).After the awards ceremony all bands got to strut their stuff in front of the cameras and a live TV studio audience at the “Maison”.Eleanore Altman, last year’s top winner, presented the first place Stop! Sign to Fadeless and was awarded her RCM CD, ' ' Degrees of Freedom' ', featuring her original compositions, as part of her prize for coming first in last year’s Stop! contest.Degrees of Freedom was produced by Maurice Singfield, Aaron Saloman (Altman’s bass player), Altman and RCM at SEM and Saloman’s studio in Montreal. Each first-place Stop! winner receives a CD production contract with RCM and automatic rotation in RCM’s independent top-thirty play-list on GDI radio.Distribution of the album is arranged through Indie Pool out of Toronto and includes 40 online points of purchase (including iTunes) along with HMV and Indigo/Chapters stores.Despite the fact that it was a Sunday night at 8 pm and Father's Day to boot, not the best time for a show, but the only time that was available, we are very pleased to have had a decent turnout and a very enthusiastic and supportive audience. We sincerely thank Bière Ô Loo, Waterloo’s local specialty-beer pub for opening its doors (normally it’s closed on Sundays) especially for us and providing a comfortable place and a meal for all those involved, somewhere cozy to relax between the soundcheck and showtime, as well as the Place du Roy for sending over a bunch of pizzas. Also, special thanks goes out to this year’s major sponsor McAuslan Brewing for its financial support. What was really extraordinary and wonderful was how all of the young musicians were very supportive of each other, cheering each other on and applauding each winner and each act.Thank you one and all, we wish you the greatest success.Without people like you, there would be no Stop! show. You are a class act.Between its live Stop! awards show, annual Stop! TV show and GDI radio, RCM provides an opportunity for up and coming young acts to be seen and heard.Being who we are is CIDI, lots of great shows, lots of wonderful hosts and terrific volunteers.Give us a listen, send us your comments and suggestions, we always want to hear from you all and play the stuff you want to hear. For those of you who can’t pick us up on the radio, go to our website and click on the live-streaming button. If you missed a show you can listen to it on the GDI player or go to the show/host pages and listen to past programs.Maurice and Tanya Singfield are Radio Communautaire Missisquoi volunteers.Tel: 450-242-9873 / 1-888-539-2098, email:msingfield@rcmmedia.org.Cl I , mp COURTESY DAVE ANDERSON Brain Freeze performs at the Annual STOP! July 2,2009 page 5 cover story BY BRIAN GORMAN Now that we’re over that other national sport, we can start to concentrate on something that goes better with sunny days and barbecues.Of course, we’re talking about three-down football, which kicks off its season Wednesday, July 1, with a Canada Day double-header.And TSN is carrying both games: Toronto at Hamilton, followed by a Grey Cup rematch with league champions Calgary hosting Montreal. Thus, the eight teams in the CFL begin the long road to Calgary and the Grey Cup on Nov.29.And as always, Eastern fans can only hope that their division can present something more closely resembling competition for the Western teams this year.“It's a very unfortunate reality that the West is always stronger than the East,” says TSN game analyst and former Montreal Alouette slotback Jock Climie.“And I’m always looking for evidence that it's a cycle that's going to right itself. But unfortunately, that's what happened last year, and 1 don’t see it changing for the year coming up.” There are some hopeful signs, if not for this season, for the future in general, though.Winnipeg has a new coaching staff led by former offensive coach Mike Kelly. So they’re a bit of a question mark.Hamilton is still building, with former University of Ottawa head coach Marcel Bellefeuille back for a second season running the Ti-Cats.And the Argos are emerging from last year’s fiasco, which started with a team demoralized by feuding quarterbacks and ended with the desperation appointment of Don Matthews as head coach. This year, Toronto has former Tennessee Titans offensive coach Bart Andrus in the top coaching job and some new strength in the offensive line.“They really didn’t have the horses on the offensive line last year,” says Climie’s fellow analyst, former Saskatchewan Roughrider Glen Suitor.“They didn’t have the strength.I think, no matter who’s playing quarterback, if he's not getting protection .“But the Argos have really improved this offseason because they've improved their offensive line.’ That leaves Montreal - with quarterback Anthony Calvillo coming back for what is likely his last season - as the perennial class of the East. And Alouettes management has to be delighted with the work done last year by head coach Marc Trestman, who took the team to the Grey Cup in his first season. As for the West, we should see another horse race, with three strong contenders vying to knock off the Calgary Stampeders - arguably the best team in the league.Jock Climie EA T GOES FORTHEUOCK (^w^blink we’d liketosee BY ELAYNE LAKEN On Sunday, HBO premieres “Hung," a series that is not about a guy with a noose around his neck.Go to www.hbo.com/events/hung/ and find out for yourself.TNT airs the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series’ Lenox Industrial Tools 301 (that’s a mouthful) on Sunday To learn more about the current points standings, click on www.nascar.com/series/cup/ On Monday, HBO premieres “Shouting Fire: Stories From the Edge of Free Speech.” Learn more about the First Amendment at caselaw Ip.findlaw.com/data/constitution/amendment01/ “Nova scienceNOW” returns Tuesday on PBS (check local listings). To learn more about the show and host Neil deGrasse Tyson, visit www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/sciencenow/ On Saturday, NBC carries coverage of the women’s final at Wimbledon in England. To access the venerable tennis tournament’s official Web site, click on www.wimbledon.org Saturday is the Fourth of July! Reservations and Show Times: 819-842-2431 or piggery-media@gmail.com The Singles of Singletary Country Connection Jessie Aulis Neo-traditionalist singer Daryle Singletary was among the brightest new stars to arrive on the contemporary country scene of the mid-’90s.He easily won fans with his simple, honest songwriting and distinctive gravely voice.Daryle Singletary is one of those artists that somehow got overlooked by the country industry, but he did earn accolades from some of his peers. After charting hits with numbers such as ‘Amen Kind of Love’, ‘Too Much Fun’ and ‘The Note’, Singletary’s traditional country style was set aside by country radio, which favoured a more pop sound.Often heralded as one of the best vocalists in Country Music today, Singletary has established a long lasting relationship with his fans and they have remained faithful to him all that time. Now, Singletary returns with his seventh album since his 1995 debut.Rockin ’ In the Country is a solid and consistent collection sure to please the singer’s devoted fans. This album is his first one on El Records (formerly Koch Records) and his first new music release, with 8 new songs, in almost a decade. The album, produced by Greg Cole is pretty solid country and the songs are all good with some real highlights.Singletary kicks off the album with the title track which will quickly have your feet tapping. It is indeed as rocking as Daryle gets.It is country with a southern rock flavor, mainly due to Charlie Daniels’ sizzling fiddle solo. The song is a fun number written by Paul Overstreet and Sonny Tillis about a farmer who sells the cows to a neighbor and builds a stage in place of his barn.He puts on weekly country music shows there instead.Cont’d on Page 16 .' j page 16 June 26 - July 2, 2009 _ RECORD - TALK Louis Schryer Returns Orleans EssexVNA & Hospice, Inc.is excited to announce the best of Canadian Master Fiddler joining the best of New England Master Fiddler for a benefit concert.Louis Schryer will be re turning to perform at the Magic of Master Fiddlers VII! The Singles of Singletary COURTESY Daryle Singletary Cont’d From Page 15 It proves to be a good, profitable idea for the farmer as Singletary sings ‘they say the old coot’s got a million stashed’.He uses the same style on ‘They Know How to Grow Em”, which perfectly fear tures the charm and appeal of southern women and why men love em’.The song is filled with clichés but the delivery greatly makes up for it.The artist co-wrote one song with Billy Lawson titled, ‘She’s a Woman,’ an affectionate tribute to his wife Holly. The song is sweet and the singer’s vocal delivery is so sincere it sells the song. One of the highlight here is ‘Real Estate Hands’.This number sounds just like something George Jones would have recorded when he was on top.The least that we can say is that Singletary does a very good job on this hardcore country song.Beautiful harmonies are provided by Rhonda Vincent which will bring tears to your eyes when they sing: ‘How can you put a price on someone’s piece of life, I’d like to know/Somethin’ so precious can’t be bought or sold/Like that comer of the bedroom where we made love and plans/There’s a thousand memories that are now in real estate hands’.With the recurrent theme of love in the album, Singletary easily makes you relate to any situation in the songs. The first single released 'Love You With the Eights On’ feels like a Conway Twitty classic country love ballad with modern production.Singletary sings it with tender warmth. There’s also the standout story song ‘That’s Why God Made Me’.It is about the journey of two children who fall in love.Predictably enough, Jen gets pregnant in high school (by another boy), and Jamie steps in to marry her. This song teaches a great lesson of selflessness without being too cheesy and it sounds as country as can be when he sings: ‘Their parents called it puppy love, but puppies know the deal/Jamie and Jen knew it was real’.This is a heart-felt ballad written by the master, Harley Allen (‘The Baby’, ‘The Little Girl’.The song offers strong lyrics and Singletary delivers to perfection with his powerful, rich and emotive baritone ‘She Sure Looks Good in Black', was written by Dale Dodson and Billy Law-son and seems like it would make a great video. This story takes place at a funeral and it turns out that the narrator is actually the person who’s dead.Singletary’s classic country voice backed up by Rhonda Vincent’s great harmonies makes the song sound very special. You can’t help but have a grin when you hean'My mama hates her, my daddy blames her/My sister swears it’s all an act/But if she had wore red/She could have raised the dead/But my Lord, that woman sure looks good in black” Tf I Could Go Back’is a pretty good song about regrets for a lost relationship and resolving to do better if given another chance: ‘I’m gonna straighten up my act if I ever get her back/I’m gonna break these old habits just like I broke her heart’.There’s a gospel feel to ‘Going Through Hell (With You Again)’.The song offers an unusual reason for praying God, as the guy in the song makes it clear that he doesn’t want to know anything about his ex in this world or the next one.He sings:Think I’m gonna fall down on my knees now/I’m gonna beg the Lord to forgive me of my sins/‘Cause one of these days, girl, we’re all gonna leave this world/And I can’t stand the thought of going through Hell with you again.” Mixed in with the newer songs are two well-known covers.Singletary does a good job on Vem Gosdin’s ‘How Can I Believe You (When You’ll Be Leaving Me)’, again with the collaboration of Rhonda Vincent on harmonies. The album closes with John Denver’s ‘Take Me Home Country Roads', surely a song that everyone enjoys hearing again.Daryle Singletary is still very much one of the best vocalists making records today. He remains true to himself, his traditional roots, and that is conveyed from the heart in his music. We have been missing this style on the radio for a while now.Hopefully, program directors will pay attention. This is great classic country at its best. The perfect album to ad to your collection.
