The concert will feature nine numbers from the group's album, Klezmer.Turovsky added most of the program will consist of traditional music, but there will also be other numbers composed by Oppenheim, who is studying composition at McGill University.See Ensemble, Page 3 f -3.: 2&.X- w A i ¦re m 1 B y " * r|5| (B COURTESY CENTENNIAL THEATRE The 15 musicians of I Musici de Montréal will join Kleztory on stage at Centennial Theatre on Saturday.Alain Lefèvre • Patrick Masterson • Golden Globes • Michael Crichton The SIDEWALK CARREFOUR de l estrie sure to flnd everything I like CARREFOUR DE L'ESTRIE JANUARY 14"' TO 23R Take advantage of rebates up to 80% PartMpato In II» taring* 4 PACKAGES FOR 2 PERSONS ntMtnnFnlliSpn.• Ont hour mossofs ptr person.- Access to hiths during tht 2 days.Sleep at the "Mahon du spa" Dinner for 2.9 It collaboration with almo o $ %400 Complete your coupon and depot* It at the Central Man. i Th Ei page 2 January 14 - January 20, 2005 RECORD Simple comfort food JT) ' * ^ is king this year i/ti/i/ti/g PHOTOS CANWEST NEWS SERVICE Top: Risotto with chicken livers, orange liqueur and chocolate offers a taste sensation that’s both sweet and savoury.Bottom: Spiced tofu with steamed greens.mm l By Ron Eade Comfort food, according to the experts, is going to be hot in 2005.One of my favourite recipes is the ubiquitous scalloped potato casserole. Before I found this fabulous and dead-easy recipe in The Complete Canadian Living Cookbook, I used to toss a lot of grated cheddar into my milky sauce, in the misguided belief that cheese would make it more rich, more creamy.Wrong.More often than not, all I succeeded in doing was making a mess as the oil tended to separate out of the cheese, making the whole thing rather unattractive to behold and definitely not toothsome on the tongue. This recipe, however, is much better.I prefer to use russet (baking) potatoes instead of Yukon gold because I find russets give a more meltingly tender result.I also use a cheap mandolin (one of those blade slicers) to ensure each slice of potato and onion is razor-thin.When you make it, resist the temptation to rinse off the potatoes after slicing, as you'll only be adding water and rinsing away valuable starch that you want in your casserole to give it texture.I also like to use whole, homo milk to give scalloped potatoes a silky feel in the mouth. And, in this recipe I'm tossing in 1/2 teaspoon (2 mL) of crushed garlic, although you may want to leave it out.The result is perfect potatoes every time.Try it, and I'm certain you'll agree.I’m also including something you don’t see too often: A recipe for chicken livers.Chicken livers are always in the store, it seems, but they're generally out of favour with those who want to lighten up, or who don’t fancy organ meat.Pity.The recipe for Risotto with Chicken Livers, Orange Liqueur and Chocolate is from chef Georges Laurier, now in charge of the kitchen at venerable Cafe Henry Burger in Gatineau. It appears in Chris Knight's Cook Like a Chef cookbook, and what I especially liked was the Grand Marnier and the shaved chocolate in the risotto. The risotto makes this dish creamy, while the chicken livers gives it richness (assuming, of course, that you enjoy liver). But, really, how can you lose with Grand Marnier and chocolate?Do not overcook the livers, as too much time in the skillet will turn them to leather.(When I made it, I cut the recipe in half because I knew I’d be the only one at my house who would eat it.You may want to do the same.) Also on my comfort food hit parade is Haddock and Winter Vegetable Casserole, from Eric Aids’ new book.Everyone Can Cook Seafood. It’s a one-dish wonder; if haddock isn't handy, you can substitute cod, snapper, salmon or halibut. Finally, I’m including Spiced Tofu with Steamed Greens from Jeffrey W.Suddaby's book, Who's Coming for Dinner?I figure, if I can inflict a recipe for chicken livers on those vegetarian readers among us, the least I can do in return is provide one for them using tofu.I made this tofu dish, and it is fantastic.Very flavourful, with interesting sugar-sour combinations thanks to the hoisin and rice vinegar, with a kiss of spice from chili pepper to make it sensational. The recipe that appears here is slightly reduced in quantity, so it uses a one pound (450 g) brick of firm tofu, instead of the original 24 ounces (680 g) of firm tofu.(I mean, what are you supposed to do with the remaining half-brick?) The Best Scalloped Potatoes Serves six 6 Yukon gold or russet potatoes (2 pounds/1 kg) 1 small or medium onion, sliced thin For the sauce: 1/4 cup (50 mL) butter 1/2 teaspoon (2 mL) minced garlic (optional) 1/4 cup (50 mL) all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon (5 mL) salt 1/2 teaspoon (2 mL) pepper 1/2 teaspoon (2 mL) dried thyme or marjoram 2 1/2 cups (625 mL) milk Directions; To make the sauce, in a saucepan melt butter over medium heat.Add garlic (if using), flour, salt, pepper and thyme; cook, stirring one minute.Gradually whisk in milk; cook, whisking constantly, five to eight minutes, or until boiling and thickened.Set aside.Peel and thinly slice potatoes, about 1/8-inch (3-mm) thick.Arrange one-third in a greased 8-inch (2L) square glass baking dish or casserole; spread half the onion over top.Repeat layers.Arrange remaining potatoes over top.Pour sauce over top.Cover and bake in preheated oven at 350 F (180 C) for 1 hour.Uncover and bake 30 minutes longer, or until lightly browned and potatoes are tender.Let stand five minutes before serving.Risotto With Chicken Livers, Orange Liqueur and Chocolate Serves six 2 1/2 cups (625 mL) chicken broth (keep an extra 1 cup/250 mL handy, in case you need more liquid to achieve al dente consistency for the rice) 2 cups (500 mL) water 2 tablespoons (25 mL) olive oil 1 cup (250 mL) onion, diced fine 11/4 cups (300 mL) Arborio rice 3 tablespoons (50 mL) Grand Marnier, or other orange-flavoured liqueur 2 tablespoons (25 mL) shaved semisweet chocolate Salt and pepper, to taste 1 tablespoon (15 mL) butter 3/4 pound (340 g) chicken livers, trimmed, lobes separated, patted dry 1/2 cup (125 mL) all-purpose flour 1/2 cup (125 mL) green onions, sliced thin (to garnish) Directions: Combine 2 cups (500 mL) of broth with water in a large mi-crowave-safe measuring cup; microwave to simmer, then stop microwave and keep warm.In another saucepan, heat olive oil and add onion to saute one minute.Add rice and saute for two minutes.Add 2 tablespoons (25 mL) of the Grand Marnier and stir until liquid is absorbed.Reduce heat to low.Spiced Tofu with Steamed Greens Serves four 1/4 cup (50 mL) hoisin sauce 1/2 cup (125 mL) rice vinegar 1 1/2 tablespoons (22 mL) fresh ginger root, grated 1/2 teaspoon (2 mL) small red chilies, chopped fine 1/2 cup (125 mL) vegetable stock One 1-pound block (450 g) firm tofu, sliced 1/2-inch (12-mm) thick into sticks, like french fries 3 cups (750 mL) whole-leaf green spinach, stems removed, washed and pat dry Directions: In a large frypan, place hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, ginger, chilies and vegetable stock.Cook on medium heat four minutes, then add firm tofu sticks and simmer three minutes, or until heated through.Place spinach on top of tofu; cover and heat quickly until spinach is wilted. To serve, divide spinach among four plates, place tofu over spinach and pour sauce over top.—Can West News Service —- .RECORD January 14 - January 20, 2005 page 3 Masterson publishes Continental Drift Books By Bea Vongdouangchanh Continental Drift, the debut novel by North Hatley author Patrick Masterson, opens with Jim saving Sandy from a near-drowning incident.“Are you ok?Are you in control?” Jim asks her when she wakes up.Sandy replies, “I think so.Men, you’re always in control.” The two end up travelling together from the Maine coast and into North Hatley on their way to British Columbia. When they get to Montreal, their plans change and they end up going to Mexico instead. The book follows their adventure and their encounters with various locals who help them with places to stay, food to eat, and things to do.Masterson says that it’s in the second to last line of the book that you get the essence and idea behind the story. As Jim and Sandy leave Mexico en route to Vancouver, a male friend on board the chartered plane says that they should go to Mexico City instead.Sandy snaps and repeats, “Men! You’re always con-troling everything.” She goes on to say that there are one or two queens in the world but it’s the prime ministers and princes who cause disturbances.Sandy accuses Jim of not listening to her and he asks if that’s dangerous.“That depends on if you want head tomorrow morning,” Sandy says.Jim replies, “All right! All right! I’m listening.Who’s in control?” which is the second to last line of the book.“Men think they’re in control but they’re not really,” Masterson says.“Women are always making decisions on where they’re going. In the third world, women are in more control than they appear here.” This implied theme that women are the ones in control brings the book together, Masterson says, because there really isn’t a plot for the story. The theme is evident throughout COURTESY CENTENNIAL THEATRE Artistic director Yuli Turovsky.Ensemble: Cont’d from Page 1 “When I proposed to this group to make a record, it was of pub in their native Mabou that had become a destination for Celtic music lovers across the continent before it closed last year.Musicians on the island mourned the loss last summer of the Red Shoe Pub, which a transplanted Torontonian had opened five years earlier.“It’s kind of the heartbeat of the village,” Raylene Rankin said Wednesday in an interview from her home in Halifax.“It became, in a very short time, a tradition, and a meeting place to hear live music and socialize. When it closed it was really missed by the locals and also by people who made it a destination.” One of the five siblings who made up the Rankin Family, credited with lifting Nova Scotia’s Celtic music onto the world stage, Rankin said she and her sisters wanted to return something to Mabou, where they began making music as children. The property sits on Mabou’s main street, just up the way from the mural welcoming people to the “home of the Rankin family” and the museum displaying their gold and platinum records. Before Rob Willson, who previously worked in advertising in Toronto, opened the Red Shoe, the building had long housed Mary Beaton’s general store.Designed to hold 70 people, the Red Shoe often saw its crowds spill out on to the sidewalk.Performers included Ashley Maclsaac, Irish tenor John McDermott and occasionally one of the Ranldns would take the stage.Coming from a family of 12 children.Cookie, John Morris, Raylene, Heather and Jimmy Rankin performed together professionally for 10 years.Starting out recording independently and selling records from the trunk of their car, they had five platinum albums when they decided to quit in 1999.Raylene, Heather, Cookie and Genevieve Rankin are the partners in the pub.Raylene said they plan to build on the Red Shoe’s reputation for live music and emphasize good food, enlisting the innovative Halifax chef Craig Flinn to craft a menu. She laughed when asked whether the owners, who are now spread from Nashville to Halifax, might occasionally sing a tune.“We’re going to be busy slinging hamburgers,” she said.—Can West News Service Brad and Jennifer were no Burton and Liz By Shelley Fralic Their marital meltdown, announced in movie star royalty and we are, apparently, distraught at the news of their parting. In a burst of celeb frenzy not seen since the demise of Bennifer, printing presses and television cameras around the land are smokin’ hot, as soft-lob journalists and ill-mannered paparazzi work their contacts overtime, gathering quotes and long faces on red carpets from New York to Tokyo.Unlike our couple du jour, Richard Burton, the Oxford-educated, stage-trained boozy Welsh rogue and Elizabeth Taylor were an open-faced marital train wreck. While Brad and Jennifer are report- edly still living together in their Hollywood Hills complex, genially debating who gets custody of the six dogs and the other fabulous mansions, Burton and Taylor were the anti-couple of Hollywood.Their explosive mating fairly burned up the movie screens in Cleopatra, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?and The Taming of the Shrew in 1967.The resulting adulterous affair — plastered on newspapers the world over — wrecked their respective marriages and enraged the Vatican, and was a non-stop litany of fist fights, suicide attempts, drooling affection, drunken brawls, public nakedness and personal excess such as America had never seen.Dick and Liz loved hard, and hated harder, so much so that they married, and divorced, twice. And the world went mad for them, following their every move and setting the dubious standard for a new I TH K, RECORD January 14 - January 20, 2005 page 5 Five questions with Virginia Cope By Nancy Nourse Record Correspondent Born in Germany, artist Virginia Cope has made her home in the Eastern Townships for the past 10 years. Her work with oil paints has been exhibited in both solo and group exhibits throughout the Townships and other regions of Quebec and Ontario, including at the Centre Culturel Yvonne L.Bombardier, Orford Arts Centre, Centre Culturel Azur, The Piggery, the Hermitage Club, Colby-Curtis Museum and the Haskell Library.A self-taught artist, Cope went on to study art at Concordia University, the Sadye Bronfman Centre and the Visual Arts Centre in Westmount. The Record recently caught up with Cope for an interview at her home near scenic Lake Memphremagog.THE RECORD: How would you describe yourself as an artist and the work that you create?COPE: “My work is best described as interpretive, impressionistic, not a realistic reproduction of what I see.I don’t believe there is any really deep-seated reason behind my work as an artist. It is the process of working with the paints, one stroke leading to another that really intrigues me the most.I realize that many artists find using oil paints to be very toxic but I like the fact that working with oils can be a very versatile medium — thick, thin or easily J| muted.“I received my first set of paints and brushes from my husband for our first wedding anniversary, 36 years ago, and I have loved painting ever since. Before that, sketching was how I expressed myself.I am really glad that we decided to move to the Eastern Townships — a great sense of inspiration, especially for an outdoor person like myself.” THE RECORD: What do you mean when you say that you often experience conflict between your natural instincts and a sense of realism?COPE: “I really like to experiment with the paints, coming up with new and vibrant tones.I am a very passionate person when it comes to my work and to an appreciation of nature itself. My instinct is to paint everything as brightly and energetically as I see it, but there are times when this natural instinct gets in the way.“Each season of the year has its own signature colours. It is often the shades of these’colours that make the setting so appealing. While the early colours of spring may seem dull and unappealing to some, to others it is this sense of tranquility and anticipation of what is to come that make the scene catch a person’s eye.” THE RECORD.How do you feel about working with different sizes of canvas?COPE: “Many artists are intimidated when it comes to working with larger canvases but I find one size equally as challenging as the other. If you are working big, then it is up to you to discover a way to enlarge your subject matter without distorting it beyond recognition.“I find working on a smaller scale tests your skills even more — how to use the fewest number of brush strokes and still retain the sense of detail that makes the subject so appealing.” THE RECORD: How has your work NANCY NOURSE/CORRESPONDENT Cope received her first set of paints and brushes 36 years ago.evolved?COPE: “As a beginning artist, you tend to use a lot of detail as a way of creating a realistic image. This is not a bad thing because you need to understand how things are made to be able to enable yourself to experiment. With more experience comes a confidence that allows you to let things happen, from one brush stroke to another. The more you paint, the more you come to understand that less is often better.“I tend not to be so concerned with the reality of what is being interpreted but more the way in which light plays with the subject matter and the impression that it sends out.“While I may take photos as a way of jogging my memory, I prefer to actually see things with my own eyes.Some- times people send me photos and ask me to do a painting.I find this difficult to do because capturing the depth of the shadows and the emotion of the moment is almost impossible.” THE RECORD: Are you working on any particular projects right now?COPE: “I am working on a series of paintings for an upcoming exposition at the Centre Culturel Azur in Magog to be held in April. As a member of Cre-atio, I will be part of an exposition with sculptor Martine Bélanger.“I have chosen the theme ‘Shorelines’ for my part of the show.I recently took a trip to the Newfoundland shores with my dear friend Juliana Lynch-Staunton, who is also an artist. The shorelines were so beautiful and offered so much in the way of inspiration.” ORCHESTRE SYMPHONIQUE DE SHERBROOKE Under the direction of Conductor and Artistic Director Stéphane Laforest MUSIC OF AMERICA JANUARY 22, 2005, at 8 p.m.At the Centre Culturel of the Université de Sherbrooke Pre-concert presentation by Ms.Louise Arseneau: 7:15 p.m.Programme; For another thing, the Globes are starting to look almost thoughtful by comparison with all the other award shows that have become as much a staple of the winter TV season as Seinfeld reruns. The Globes are held a week after the People’s Choice Awards, which last week gave Jennifer Garner its award for “Best Hair” and had two categories for TV reality shows.By that standard, the Golden Globes look like the Nobel Prize for Literature, which is another award that could use a reality check, come to think of it.Also, with a few exceptions, the Golden Globe slate of nominees seems fairly sensible this year.Sideways, the critics’ darling about two middle-aged men on road trip through California wine country, leads the Globes with seven nominations despite the fact that it has no major stars, is an offbeat story and an independent-film sensibility. It’s a movie that critics loved but not necessarily a mainstream choice, yet there were the Golden Globe people, hopping on board the quality bandwagon.A Web site called betWWTS.com, which provides odds on this kind of thing, has Sideways as the one-to-three favourite to nab the Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy category of the Globes.(Just so we don’t get too weepy over the good taste of the show, it’s interesting that Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is nominated in the same category despite the fact that it is neither musical nor comedy, except in the most classical sense.) Other Golden Globe categories are similarly well-chosen: There’s not a Patch Adams among the major categories in movies or TV and some — such as the inclusion of both Javier Bardem and Don Cheadle in the Best Actor — Drama category — are positively inspired. The Golden Globes may have arrived there through the back door, but they got there anyway. They may not matter as awards, but aren’t you looking forward to what Robin Williams will do with a lifetime achievement speech?—Can West News Service A group that takes movies to smaller centres across Canada has announced that two political 50 most beautiful people in the world. To add to the list of superlatives, you could also say he's the master of science gone awry.Rapidly approaching technical cog-gerism — he’s 62 — but looking like a trendy 35-year-old, Crichton is flying high. He’s checked the environmental entrails, found them foreboding and delivered State of Fear (HarperCollins, $36.95), one of the more controversial books of the New Year.Even if The Andromeda Strain or Congo are too yesterday for some to remember, Timeline, a 2002 indictment of nanotechnology, is still on the radar, as is the blockbuster TV series ER.Crichton, after all, is a force. One hundred million books in print confirms that.State of Fear, a title suggestive of government manipulation rather than human concerns, will be read with rage by most tree huggers and other radical environmentalists, but with a “hot damn” by those who wonder, yet believe in sober second thought when it comes to such perceived crises as global warming.Crichton, never shy of controversy, happily gores world environmentalists with a Clive Cussler-esque thriller centred on a global-warming lawsuit against the U.S.Environmental Protection Agency by a South Pacific island nation. While the poor souls of Vanutu (sic) may be facing the fractional threat of rising sea levels, their plight is the last straw for the entirely self-serving environmental activist group, NERF (National Environmental Resource Fund), which is pleading their case.Vanutu islanders, after all, are being inched to death by the ocean, thanks significantly to the U.S.— the world’s take.It was perhaps an unconscious act at the time — but emotionally and instinctively she was being drawn to the craft of writing. It was only later that she also realized that it was a way of defining who she really is.“I really think I’ve been writing, telling stories, keeping journals since I was little,” she says now.As she grew older and more capable of articulating her goals, her parents were puzzled — but encouraging.“My father and mother didn’t quite understand what I wanted to do.My mother’s an artist and my father’s a scientist, so there was this gap in understanding.” .McWatt is discussing This Body, a book which her publishers, HarperCollins, believe will make her the new hot name in Canadian fiction and which has received glowing testimonials from the likes of John Berger and Camilla Gibb. For McWatt, a writer of visible modesty and a consuming intellectual curiosity, the arrival of her new book is an exciting moment but it is also obviously part of an ongoing process of seeking to understand herself and her own place in the scheme of living.Like the middle-aged Victoria who is the central figure in her new novel, McWatt was born in British Guiana, now Guyana. And like Victoria and other characters she has written about, McWatt — with her mixed Indian, African, Chinese, Scottish and Guyanese heritage — has long conducted her own BLACK CAT BOOKS ¦ happen. Also, my influences are all Canadian.” One question has nagged her repeatedly: where does she belong?Similar questions obsess Victoria, the 61-year-old heroine of This Body. She works as a chef in London, but it is emotionally isolated. She shuns close relationships and is haunted by memories of her past — her Guyanese heritage, and her vanished lover Kola who was the centrepiece of her life in Toronto 30 years before. It was to find Kola that she came to England — the last place where he was seen — and she has stayed on in an unfulfilled emotional limbo. The question of race is really peripheral in a novel like This Body. The more subtle issues of culture and cultural identity, of “belonging” somewhere, interest McWatt more.Culture, she declares, is more defining than race. She is interested in people who feel “displaced” culturally, geographically and emotionally.—Can West News Service —T* *11 RECORD TALK January 14 - January 20, 2005 page 9 Jackson relates to coach Carter Movies PARAMOUNT PICTURES Samuel L.Jackson plays the controversial high school basketball coach who benched his undefeated team due to their collective poor academic record in 1999.By Jamie Portman He was a small-town California basketball coach named Ken Carter — a guy who had taken on an inept, undisciplined bunch of high schoolers and turned them into a team of championship potential. He was the toast of the community because of his leadership and coaching prowess. And then, virtually overnight, Carter ceased to be a local hero and became the town pariah and villain. It happened six years ago, on Jan.4, 1999, when he padlocked the school gym and denied his players access because they had failed to keep up their grades. This is the man that Samuel L.Jack-son portrays in his new movie, Coach Carter — a man who made international headlines by benching every member of his undefeated team because of poor academic performance. It’s a role that is very close to Jackson’s heart because he fervently believes in the importance of self-discipline and a good education in order to get ahead.“It’s not often that you get a chance to do something that has some kind of social commentary,” he muses. In the case of Coach Carter, which opens Friday, that social commentary takes aim at the prevalent belief of many teenage jocks and their parents that excellence in sports is more important than academic achievement. It’s an attitude that Jackson rejects.“Going to school, getting good grades and being a student before you’re an athlete was something that was always drilled into me,” he says simply.“And there aren’t a lot of films that emphasize that.” So he immediately related to the real-life Carter, a man who retained his integrity in spite of being blindsided and betrayed by a timid school board and who provoked such hostility within the community that he received hate mail and rocks through the window.“It was a very touching kind of thing that Ken did in that city, especially with those kids.” But it was also courageous — given what Carter suffered — and this provided the basis for what Jackson saw as a good film story.Besides, “I like basketball a lot, so with my combined love for education and basketball, it was kind of an easy choice for me.” As usual, the 56-year-old Jackson’s career is in full throttle.Jackson is always amused when people ask him about the pressure of taking on so many roles, “It’s really not that difficult,” he says in his customary laid-back manner.“Once I have the job and am on it, and with the way I generally prepare, I know what I’m going to do in that particular film and can look at my day’s work and see where it fits in the particular plan that I’ve made.” He’s also learned to relax — playing golf when he’s not doing a film, and taking breaks in his trailer when he’s on set.“I watch TV — Judge Judy, Divorce Court — or I’m reading.Or, if I know that my next job starts right after the job that I’m doing, then I’m in the trailer preparing for that next job while I’m doing that particular job.I’m talking to my makeup artist or my hairdresser about how I’m going to look or what we want to do about how I look, the clothing I want to wear.“So I’m working on that next job while sitting around waiting to go into the next scene for the movie that I’m doing.I’m also reading scripts looking for the job after that one.” In the case of Coach Carter, Jackson was into selecting suits because, even during basketball practice, Ken Carter was always immaculately attired in suit, shirt and tie.The wardrobe reflected a personal sense of discipline which Carter sought to instill in the young players on his team; to Jackson it was one way of communicating Carter’s remarkable leadership qualities. The actor saw an additional responsibility with this assignment because he was portraying a real-life person — in this case, one who was frequently on set.“Ken was there. He was always there watching us.I asked him a lot of times: ‘Is that OK?Do you feel fine that I’m going in this direction?’ “You want to be as honest as you can possibly be.There’s no way that I could have the mindset of Ken or really know the obstacles he had to face and overcome to make that basketball program successful.” —Can West News Service GALAXY CINEMAS f 4204, boul, Bertrand-Fabi MOVIE INFO 821 -9999 anuiu.galaxycinemas.com & SHOWTIMES page 16 January 14 - January 20, 2005 RECORD TALK John Leguizamo determined to serve his art By Jamie Portman Back when he was a teenager growing up in the New York borough of Queens, John Leguizamo was arrested three times.Once, it was because of a practical joke: Leguizamo and a buddy took over the public address system on a New York subway car and announced to passengers that they were the newly appointed subway disc jockeys.Subway authorities were not amused.Another arrest came when he climbed over a subway turnstile to avoid paying a fare.Again he was released with a caution. The third arrest happened when he and his pals tried to sneak into an X-rated movie.“1 can’t believe we got arrested!” laughs Leguizamo."It was a misdemeanor. There were 20 of us and we had skipped school.” So how did Leguizamo — soon to be seen playing a motormouth junkie in Assault On Precinct 13 - escape the delinquency label and end up with his current status as an award-winning actor, writer and director and a triple threat on stage, film and TV?Well, it seems it all came about because — ironically — he was such a hellraiser as a kid.It was a concerned high school math teacher who suggested he find an outlet for his energy by studying acting.“He just came to my rescue. He said: ‘Stop being obstructive and be productive and do something!’ And I, in my punk style, said ‘Screw you!’ And then I did it — I went to the yellow pages and found an acting school.“It totally changed my life.At 17 my whole life changed because I had found an outlet.” He financed his courses by working after hours at a KFC.He eventually spent a year in the drama program at New York University before moving on to study method acting at the Lee Stras-berg Institute.Leguizamo is amusingly candid about some of his early acting gigs — for example his performance as Puck in A Midsummer Night's Dream.“I was horrible.I was terrible.I was the worst.Poor Bill Shakespeare was turning in his grave, man.” Later he redeemed himself and displayed his chops as a Shakespearean actor with his fiery Tybalt in Baz Luhrmann’s film version of Romeo And Juliet. That 1996 movie helped establish him as a presence in Hollywood.Luhrmann used him again as a comical Toulouse- Lautrec in Moulin Rouge, another performance demonstrating Leguizamo’s success in avoiding narrow stereotyping as a Latino actor.By this time he was also demonstrating an eagerness to take risks, and he still remains enormously proud of his performance as the transvestite sex bomb, Chi-Chi Rodriguez in To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything! Julie Newmar. The year 2005 is shaping up as a banner one for Leguizamo.Assault On Precinct 13, which opens Jan.19, is French filmmaker Jean-Francois Richet’s reworking of the 1976 John Carpenter cult classic about an isolated police precinct which finds itself under siege from a gang of ruthless criminals.By late spring, he will have opened in two other films — The Honeymooners and horror icon George Romero’s Land Of Tire Dead.Due for release later in the year is Alibi which he describes as a “noirish black comedy.” He’s also working on a script for another of his acclaimed one-man shows.Slender, wiry, with a coiled-spring intensity indicative of the creative restlessness which drives him, Leguizamo is never at a loss for words. He makes clear in his conversation with CanWest News Service that serving his art is his prime motivating force, even when appearing in an action thriller like Assault On Precinct 13.The film takes place during a New Year’s eve blizzard in Detroit and focuses on an undermanned police precinct and what happens when its emotionally troubled sergeant (Ethan Hawke) is forced on short notice to house a busload of criminals whose numbers include a ruthless crime lord (Laurence Fishburne) and Leguizamo’s shrewd but pathetic junkie. The twist is that a group of corrupt cops fear that Fishburne is about to expose them, so they decide to force their way into the station and eliminate him and everyone else in the building.Leguizamo is a fervent admirer of the original Carpenter film, but before he took the remake on, he asked for changes.“I wasn’t sure about my part,” he says.“It wasn’t developed. There were no levels to him — no intrigue, no political stuff, no humour.” Leguizamo knew that Richet wanted this to be a character-driven action thriller, so they worked with screenwriter James DeMonaco in giving the role more depth. The actor also worked out a backstory for this character.—Can West News Service What’s On Music Jan.15 On Saturday, the Danville Curling Club is having a DANCE WITH RAM-BLIN FEVER, at 9 p.m.Everyone welcome.Free admission.CONTRA DANCE, Saturday at Lennoxville United Church, 7:30 p.m., Celtic-Gypsy tunes.$5.students, $10.adults.Events Jan.15 Five of six lectures with GUEST SPEAKER, JIMMY MANSON Saturday, Jan.15, “For King and Empire: Eastern Townships’ Volunteers during the Boer War.” During the last two decades of the 20th century, English speaking C anadians became infatuated with the idea of imperial unity. This development led thousands of Canadians to volunteer to fight for British interests in South Africa. The volunteers included several Town-shippers in their ranks who, like their comrades, were eager to fight for King and Empire in a war that To place an ad A What’s On notice costs $6 for 25 words or less {.25 per additional word) or, $10 for a What’s On and Brome County News Billboard notice.Deadline is Wednesdays at noon.Notices must be pre-paid (we accept Visa or Mastercard).Send your notice by fox to 819821-3179 or e-mail to classad@sher-brookerecord.com or call 819-5699525 or 1-800463-9525.was at best avoidable and at worst a human tragedy. To be held in the Old Court House, 15 St.Paul, Knowl-ton at 1 p.m.Jan.16 COMMUNITY GOSPEL HOUR.Church of St.Luke, 120 Pine St., Magog on Sunday, Jan.16 at 4 p.m.Paul Essaff, Message: From a Burning Bush to a Burning Heart.Exodus: 33:18, guest singers: Lee Bilodeau and Jill Lillis, fellowship after service.«Ml*' Colectivo in Sherbrooke Feb.2 COURTESY COLECTIVO Townshippers will get a taste of sunshine on Feb.2 as the 15 musicians of the Montreal-based group Colectivo hit the stage at downtown Sherbrooke's Café du Palais.Influenced by many different music styles, this latin/ska group has gained a reputation for its entertaining, multicultural sound. The name Colectivo was inspired by the light trucks that wind the streets of Mexico in wich passengers share the cost and the adventure of the displacement.Sold at the door, tickets are $10.For more information, call 819-566-8977 or go to www.cafedupalais.com.
