Saltimbocca alla Romana (FOR TWO PEOPLE) 4 veal scaloppine (flattened out cutlets) 1 teaspoon dried sage, crumbled 4 paper-thin prosciutto slices 1 lemon 1 garlic clove large onion 1 tbsp.room temperature butter 3 tbsp.salted butter 1 tbsp.olive oil Salt and freshly ground pepper Directions: If you didn’t buy your veal already flattened out, place each cutlet between sheets of waxed paper.Flatten to thickness of 1/8-inch using mallet or rolling pin.Peel and chop the garlic.Wash the lemon and take its zest.Pound the zest with salt, pepper, the garlic and the room temperature butter.Season the scaloppine with this paste on one side only.Place one slice of prosciutto atop each piece of veal, using the spice paste as the “glue”.Secure together with toothpicks.Peel and slice the onion.Melt the 3 tbsp.of butter in a heavy skillet, then slowly cook the onion rings until golden and caramelized (about 20 minutes).Remove from the skillet and season with salt and the juice of the “zested” lemon.Return the same skillet to the heat, adding the olive oil. When very hot, fry the scaloppine until golden, turning only once, for about 2 minutes on each side.Transfer veal to platter; cover with foil to keep warm.Return the onions to the hot skillet and quickly reheat them.Serve at once.: COURTESY ALEX FORBES Oh-so clever quesadillas By Ron Eade The other day I was in something of a hurry, and just wanted something fast to slap together to satiate the hordes (read: my 10-year-old son) before hockey. This easy quesadilla recipe fit the bill nicely, ready in about 30 minutes. It helps also to have a bag of salad handy in the fridge, to round out the menu. For a child-friendly, no-spice version you can use ketchup instead of salsa, and reduce or omit the chili powder.Clever Quesadillas Serves five 12 ounces (340 g) extra-lean ground beef 1 tablespoon (15 mL) chili powder 1/2 cup (125 mL) each, shredded light cheddar and refried beans 1/3 cup (75 mL) salsa 1 green onion, chopped 10 small flour tortillas Directions: Pre-heat oven to 450 degreesF (230 degreesC).Panfry ground beef, seasoned with chili powder, for 6 to 8 minutes, breaking meat into small chunks with the back of a spoon, until beef is browned and cooked through.Remove from heat.Stir in cheese, refried beans, salsa and green onion.Spread 1/2 cup (125 mL) of mixture over 1 tortilla; top with a second tortilla.Repeat with remaining tortillas.Bake on cookie sheet 8 to 10 minutes, or until golden.Cut into wedges and serve.—CanWestNews Service CANWEST NEWS SERVICE This quesadilla recipe is ready in about 30 minutes. For a non-spicy version, use ketchup instead of salsa and reduce the chili powder. CANWEST NEWS FILE PHOTO Glenn Close, 57, stars in three movies at this year's Sundance film festival — Heights, The Chumscrubber and Nine Lives.By Katherine Monk I don’t know how much more of this I can take,” says Glenn Close. It seems she’s not just talking about the insanity of the Sundance Film Festival, where she has three films in the 2005 program, but about the movie business in general.Sitting down with her in the HP Wirelmage lounge for a brief chat, after following her up and down Main Street for the better part of two hours as she had her picture taken for various promotional purposes, I discover Close won’t elaborate. She simply looks over with those clear blue eyes and says: “I’m not really torn about this, I just don’t know how much longer I want to be away from the people I love to go away and make a movie.I may well be at a crossroads in my life.” A curious, curling smile punctuates the statement, as if I should know what it really means. But before there is time to ask her if she is talking about retirement or a return to her theatre roots, the publicists indicate our 10 minutes is up.They whisk her away for yet another engagement in another logoladen celebrity lounge packed with handlers, sponsors and the regular assortment of drink-toting festival nobodies. It’s hard to imagine Close seriously pondering retirement. Not only is she one of the most sought-after actors in the business, she’s never shown any signs of burnout on screen — even now, after she’s been working without a real break for two years on her three Sundance films.Whether it’s as Diana Lee, a respected Broadway star whose career goes supernova in Heights; a mother who loses her son to suicide in The Chumscrubber; or as Maggie, one of nine women undergoing a life crisis in Rodrigo Garcia’s Nine Lives, Close brings a fragile, touching, often ugly humanity to each performance showcased in Park City. She is not an actress anyone could ever accuse of phoning it in.She made her film debut in The World According to Garp in 1982 as the modern “virgin” mother, Jenny Fields, a character so ingrained in pop culture that she has been the subject of women’s studies doctoral theses (check out the online essay Feminism and Apocalyptic Thought). In the years since.Close has carved out the rarest of niches for herself as a universally respected actress who can play a bunny-poaching mistress or lesbian colonel with equal conviction. Why even think of giving it up at the top of your game?Perhaps the answer is staring me in the face. The walls of the celebrity lounge are covered with billboard-sized transparencies of the various celebrities who have set foot in Park City over the past seven days.As I speak to Close, an image of in-genue-du-jour Keira Knightley stares back from the wall, looking young and beautiful and entirely unreal. That face is the currency of the movie business.Close turns 58 in March, and from what I could glean, Close will not agree to any photo session without a “kill” option — essential- ly, the privilege to see any unflattering image destroyed. With her fresh, freckled skin framed by short, blond hair, Close looks a dozen years shy of her age.She truly looks fantastic, but the movie business isn't kind to women over 30.Close is one of just a handful of mature women — along with Meryl Streep, Annette Bening and Susan Sarandon — who can still land big parts in big movies.“I feel quite privileged to be offered such well-written work, because there just aren't that many good scripts out there for a middle-aged woman these days,” she says. She has enjoyed a recent run of mother roles in smaller independent films, which include the Sundance selections. The actor says says the mother in Heights is not a good mom: Diana Lee, the theatre star, is too self-involved to really move outside herself and show real love to her child. The mother in The Chumscrubber has to deal with the guilt of her child's suicide.“The maternal figure is always something to contend with. It’s problematic. No one has the perfect equation when it comes to being a parent.I’m a mother to a daughter who is 16, and I feel she's been as much a mother to me as I have been to her.I’m a working parent, and when I come home, she’s there. She’s the one who woos me daily.” Close had her daughter, Annie Maude Starke, with John Starke — one on a short list of significant others that also includes Canadian actor Len Cari-ou.Close is in her 30th year as a professional actor. She started in theatre in New York as an understudy for three Broadway plays in 1974.She continued to perform on the stage before landing the part in The World According to Garp, which launched her film career. Now she’s also involved behind the scenes, observing another side of the Sundance process as a member of the Sundance Institute board, and seeing scripts in progress as they move through the Sundance lab, where ideas are workshopped under the tutelage of expert advisors. She says that judging by the volume and originality of the works she is seeing, independent film is alive and well. And no matter what she decides to do next, she clearly remains engaged by the creative opportunities of the acting process.“I think so much of acting is all about imagination. It’s how you create a character, and being able to do that and build that character is really a craft.I think of myself as a craftsper-son.I’m as humbled by the process and by character as I was at the beginning.I’m not as insecure as I was about inhabiting this stranger, but it always feels as though I’m jumping off the cliff with wet wings,” she says.Close looks down, searching for the words to identify her current location on her life’s journey.“I guess I’m just a work in progress.” —Can West News Service iTHKi RECORD - TALK Five questions with Ann Mitchell January 28 - February 3, 2005 page 5 Q&A , NANCY NOURSE/RECORD CORRESPONDENT Ann Mitchell poses with one of the paintings close to her own heart - the family home in Chambly.By Nancy Nourse Record Correspondent Ann Mitchell is a charming Eastern Townships resident whose positive outlook on life has led to a fascinating career as a naïf artist. With an instinctive talent, Mitchell seems to be able to make the most everyday thing or person spring to life, anxious to tell its own personal story — trees that seem to grow and age before your very eyes, characters both human and animal-like.Mitchell’s commissioned works can be found in homes from Switzerland to various places throughout North America.Specializing in homes and campuses and the life within, Mitchell’s work is often regarded as a cherished family heirloom.Admirers of her work will be delighted to find available a published auto-biogra-phy, ‘Where The Heart Is’, containing 35 of her works. The Record caught up with Ann Mitchell at her home in the hills high above North Hatley for an interview earlier this week: THE RECORD: How does Naive Art differ from other forms of artwork?MITCHELL: “Naive Art is sometimes referred to as ‘an affair of the heart’.It has roots in many cultures throughout the world and if we accept the earliest cave art as Naïve Art, it is as old as time.Sometimes naive paintings are created from as a dreamlike product of the artist’s imagination, as with Rousseau, but often they depict scenes from the artist’s daily life, as in the works of Breughel and Grandma Moses. The technique is often characterized by freshness and purity, accentuated detail, vibrant sense of colour and highly imaginative composition.Certain paintings make you smile while others touch your very soul.I, like so many Naive artists, am basically self-taught.The times that I have taken courses, 1 found it difficult to align my natural instincts with conventional methods of drawing. For me, it is the addition of people, animals, birds and flowers that really make a painting come alive.Painting a beloved place and filling in the scene with family memories gives me great joy.” THE RECORD.What makes your work different from other artists who are commissioned to recreate people’s homes?MITCHELL: “Often paintings of this kind are based on the architectural design of the building, both original and that created by time. What I like to do is meet with the family and listen to their special family memories.I may take many pictures to capture the basic design but the real life behind my artwork comes from not only what makes this building special but also why it makes it a special place for that particular family.I often portray scenes from a bird’s eye view.“ THE RECORD: Would you tell us about the work that you did for Bishop’s College School and Stanstead College?MITCHELL: “I was asked to do a painting of Bishop’s College School that would be meaningful to two generations of alumni, the husband’s all boy class of ’65 and the daughter’s co-ed class of ’90.The resulting tableau depicts seventeen local personalities, nine official athletic activities, five extracurricular activities and seven examples of ‘criminal activity’ including the smoking scandals of the 60’s and the ‘90’s.I delighted in an anecdote that told of the husband and some of his friends who had attended an Old Boy’s Reunion and partied a little too much — leading to the visit by a cow to Centre Hall.In one corner of the painting 1 also included the chemistry professor, who just happened to raise chickens on campus, that I heard about that was very strict with his students — was chasing a runaway chicken waving his school baton. This is the kind of thing that touches a people in a very personal way.“I often refer to the painting that I was commissioned to do by the alumni of Stanstead College as my ‘magnum opus’.The stories people could tell about Stanstead College! The alumni, the teachers, the pranks — they all helped to make this school community the basis for many legends over the years. In this painting, I included students romping in the post-deluge puddle outside Bugbee House, a boy on the fourth floor of Colby House hanging by his ankles to peek inside the girls’ third floor window, old-boy hockey players, Mrs.Galambos taking her morning constitutional, a gathering of the Round Square, everyone’s favourite football coach Alex Philip and Sam Abbott famously kicking a football over Colby and so much more, 185 people, animals and activities in addition to the buildings that corresponded to so many of the stories.I found it very challenging to try to incorporate the multi-faceted nature of this campus — why it has a special place in the heart’s of so many.” THE RECORD: What did you mean when you said that your painting is never really finished?MITCHELL: “I work so hard on the details of each and every scene, trying to capture as much of the family memories as I possibly can without overloading the final result.I call some of the work I do as ‘works in progress’ be- cause when I sell a painting, the customer understands that I am always willing to make adjustments to the characters involved.I was commissioned to do an interior setting using the same principle that I use for my exterior work. This was very challenging in itself — rooms filled with wall carpets, antiques, Inuit keepsakes and other treasures. One of the daughters was about to have a baby but, for superstitious reasons, we decided not to incorporate the baby until after it was born.Once the child had arrived, I took back the painting and carefully ‘lifted’ the teacup from the daughter’s hand and replaced it with the tiny baby girl resting on her mother’s shoulder.Another time, I was asked to add a gentleman’s biological father into the scene. When the painting was originally done, his step-father was still alive and he didn’t want to show any disrespect for him.Now that he had passed away, the client felt at ease to include this important part of his life as well.It is all about the client and their memories — making them happy brings me a great deal of satisfaction.” THE RECORD: You have said that you find your work as an artist both fascinating and puzzling—would you explain?MITCHELL: “I am fascinated by the very creativity that seems to pour out of us - one minute the inspiration is not there and then all of a sudden a concept becomes very clear. When I am puzzled about how to portray something or someone, I often place my work in front of a mirror.Seeing it at a different angle somehow helps me to think ‘outside the box’, notice something that I would have never noticed otherwise.Where do these thoughts come from - our own personal experiences, stories that we have heard?“Being a Naive artist allows me to look at the whimsical side of life. While I may take liberties with the subject, my objective is to make the character or object come to life as much as possible.Every person has a story.Even the most inanimate object has a story surrounding it.If my work as a Naïve artist makes someone chuckle and smile, then I have achieved my goal.I have painted for over twenty years but it is the act of sharing this work that gives me the most pleasure.” iTHEa page 6 January 28 - February 3, 2005 RECORD Healey practising traditional jazz at home By Lynn Saxberg Jeff Healey gave up touring years ago.Part of the reason the respected Canadian musician opened his own club in downtown Toronto was to play regular gigs without having to spend time in airports. All the same, Healey faces a growing demand across the country for his latest musical venture, the Jazz Wizards.Their second release, Adventures in Jazzland, continues the exploration of traditional jazz begun a few years ago with the disc Among Friends. It’s a style of music that’s been a lifelong passion for Healey, though he made his name as a blues-rock electric guitarist with radio hits such as Angel Eyes and Confidence Man.“A tour is a nasty four-letter word in my vocabulary,” says Healey.38, who was born with eye cancer and has been blind since the age of one.“It’s something that I did for many, many years and I hate travelling.I love to play and I love to entertain so to sort of balance things, get the best of both worlds, I'll travel away for two or three days or something like that.” The swinging new disc features Healey on trumpet, guitar and trombone and warm, friendly vocals, backed by the stellar Jazz Wizards, along with high-profile guests such as guitarist Marty Grosz, bassist Vince Giordano and cornetist Tom Pletcher.Feel-good nuggets revived from the 1920s and 30s include ‘My Blackbirds Are Bluebirds Now’, ‘Three Little Words’, ‘Emaline’, ‘Indiana’ and ‘Keep Smiling at Trouble’.An avid collector, Healey owns some 25,000 78s, and close to 4,000 CDs and LPs of reissued material, most of it from the first part of the last century. He credits his father for instilling his passion for vintage songs.Despite his vast knowledge of pre-war music, he refuses to force it on anyone.Heading into the studio for Jazzland, the plan was exactly the same as it was for Among Friends.“It was: Set up the studio time, round up the musicians, have one or two ideas of what to do song-wise, and then go in and record a bunch of tunes in a matter of a few hours,” he says.“If you’ve got the right musicians in there, you just go in, stamp your foot twice and off you go.With talent like these guys, you can’t go wrong.” Jazzland is the first release on his own label, HealeyOphonic Records, which has since released a disc by the Jazz Wizards’ rising star of a singer, Terra Hazelton. That’s it for now, until Healey can Mahoney, a tiny singer with a big voice.Elyssa, who just turned 12, and her parents went to Ottawa on Dec.12 at the invitation of Downchild singer Chuck Jackson.Backstage, they met Healey, who commented on Elyssa’s speaking voice. When he found out she was a singer, he invited her to sit in with the house band at his club.“I invited her up to the club after the Downchild thing because she was just such an enchanting personality,” Healey says.“I figured anybody with that kind of confidence without being overbearing had to be good.I asked her to come up and sing on a Thursday and she said she wouldn’t be able to do it until the Christmas break.” Elyssa did sing with Healey and his house band at Healey’s club during her Christmas break, and then joined him for a televised New Year’s Eve performance in Barrie, Ont.Elyssa’s mom, Suzanne Mahoney, says her daughter brought the house down at the club.“It was amazing. It was fun,” Mahoney says.“The roar from the crowd. They just loved her and Jeff was quite impressed with how organized she was.” The seventh-grader had arrived with a list of songs, ready to tell the band what key she sang in and the flourishes she would add.The repertoire included ‘Little Red Rooster’, ‘Drift Away’ and ‘Proud Mary’, to name a few.Healey, who also discovered and supported singer Amanda Marshall when she was a teenager, was also impressed with Elyssa’s level-headedness.“She is, first of all, a unique talent, and secondly, a natural,” he says.“And the good thing here, I’ve seen several other kids in the not-too-distant past who have really tried to make their immediate future music and performing, who have really neglected their schooling and families and basically being a kid.Elyssa is exactly the opposite.” He has already invited her back to his club in March.—Can West News Service CAR l0 give away?Don’t know what to do with your old car?Give it to The Kidney Foundation of Canada.Towng « tree and you ! also ba Ferde Grofe’s ‘On The Trail’, from the Grand Canyon Suite.—Can West News OSCAR PETERSON A Night In Vienna (Verve Canada) This concert, already available in DVD format with an extra track, was a memorable one for many reasons. It was Peterson’s return to Vienna to pay tribute to Bosendorfer Pianos on the occasion of the company’s 175th anniversary. It was recorded at the beautiful Musikverein, and it featured Peterson’s gifted quartet of Neils-Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, Ulf Wakenuis on guitar and Martin Drew on drums.Peterson was 79 at the time of the recording and still in command of his talent.Sure, there are times when the dexterity of old is absent, most glaringly on uptempo bebop tunes, like Cakewalk. But the man exudes swing, as in his reading of Satin Doll.He is most convincing on the introspective, original Pete usbn compositions ‘When Summer Comes’ and ‘Requiem’.Pedersen, Drew and Wakenuis are sympathetic helpmates, as well as terrific soloists.—Can West News CARLOS DEL JUNCO Blues Mongrel (Northern Blues) Carlos del Junco must have been a brat as a kid — he loves to upset applecarts. This follow-up five years later to 1999’s Big Boy album finds him kicking through an assortment of musical conventions with a gifted part-ner-in-crime, guitarist Kevin Breit. It’s Breit’s show as much as the harmonica-blowing del Junco’s: The music is ostensibly blues, but the opening track, ‘Blues with a Feeling’, features Breit’s ragged guitar lines, del Junco’s growling vocals and bluesy harp, and an underpinning of congas from Arturo Avalos. The rest of the CD is always inventive, never predictable, and a good mix of originals and standards.Heillig Manoeuvre’s Henry Heillig turns up on bass. The guys’ take on the theme to ‘Our Man Flint’, the James Coburn spy spoof from the 1960s, is a pleasant surprise.—Can West News VARIOUS ARTISTS Elektra: The Album (Wind-Up) I appreciate soundtracks as a barometer — or in another sense, a biopsy — of the state of the pop marketplace. Also, there’s bugger-all else to review in January. This female su- perhero vehicle poses the questions: Has emo already been subsumed by e-metal?Or is it the new soft-rock?The ‘Taking Back Sunday’ song here may as well be ‘Bread’.However, a female heroine means a higher-than-average percentage of female bands. The Donnas?Good.Megan McCauley? The new Alanis yoga priestess.—Can West News THE CHEMICAL BROTHERS Push the Button (Virgin/EMI) Try as they might, The Chemical Brothers can’t shake their legacy as a great ‘90s band. This disc finds the London duo standing between past and future — well-intentioned, with a few tricks still up their sleeves, but lacking the cocky au-teurism once their calling card.Q-Tip delivers a self-help rap on the opener, ‘Galvanize ’ ; there are sweet pop moments, courtesy of Anna-Lynne Williams and The Magic Numbers; and there is dance-floor fun on ‘Shake Break Roll’.There are also yawners like the industrial anthem-manque ‘Believe’, and the repetitive breakbeat jam ‘Come Inside’.Keep an open mind, and you’ll find substance here.Just be ready to push the “skip” button.—Can West News N * ‘*%m1 DVD of the week By Katherine Monk Ray: Jamie Foxx's tears were a highlight at the Golden Globes, and now you can see the performance that may win Foxx an Oscar as he embodies the mind, body and soul of Ray Charles. The late soul singer was a visionary, a mold-breaker and a womanizing drug addict and we get all the good — with all the bad — in this workaday biopic from Taylor Hackford.Playing it straight up, Hackford resists any dramatic devices or narrative tricks to tell his story. He starts in the middle, flashes back to the beginping, and takes us to the point where Charles' success was undeniable. The real selling point to the movie is Foxx in the central role as he nails every quirk and habit of the late great singer.—CanWest News Service page 8 January 28 - February 3, 2005 RECORD TALK A very broad tour of the province over the two centuries Protestant school board study is no dreary textbook By Peter Riordon Quebec Heritage News In the midst of the political turmoil that thundered into the lives of Quebecers in the latter part of the twentieth century, a few Protestant school commissioners arranged to set aside some funds in a trust to ensure that the proud history of Protestant education in la Belle Province would not be forgotten. The authors, with the aid of that trust, have painted a fascinating view of how the early settlers of British and American origins worked within their communities to ensure their children had access to education even when faced with great challenges. This is no chronological story.Rather it dips into history and picks out the vignettes about the local Board that hired a particular teacher who taught the community children while living in the garret over the classroom in the log cabin that served as both school and lodgings. It describes the entries in the old minute books relating the challenges of staffing, finding resources, setting and maintaining standards and eccentric personalities. We learn of the parts played by the community leaders, the various churches, the Royal Institution for the Advancement of Learning and, much later, the provincial government with the Parent Report and a new Ministry of Education in the 1960's.We gain insight into the Parti Québécois efforts to abolish school boards and, when that failed, to create linguistic boards and how that eventually came about in 1998.The authors have not told us the en- M E F.T I N G O F II F P E O P L E U PHOM ST A» î TÜT s si c, lake Books iLæcz tire story. We do not learn about St.Helen’s School for girls, run under the wing of the Montreal Diocese of the Anglican Church for almost a century; we do not see any mention of the Quebec Association of Protestant School Boards which was incorporated in 1929 and was instrumental in fending off the worst of the PQ reform attempts. We learn nothing of the Kenniff Commission that carefully prepared the way for wide acceptance of linguistic school boards. However, we are given a very broad tour of the province over the two centuries the book covers and we leave with a very good sense of where we came ffom and how we got here today in education. The book was not conceived to be a best seller, but to those with an interest in English notion of a movie that’s so bad it’s good derives from a modern sensibility.Fifty years ago, it was possible to enjoy a bad movie on the merits of its awfulness.Audiences for Attack of the 50 Foot Woman surely included a goodly number of young ironists who were there to mock, along with those who were there to be frightened. But most people who went to see, say, The Greatest Show On Earth were probably under the impression it was good because it was good. This misapprehension, reinforced by the fact the film won a Best Picture Oscar, took years to correct, but things are looking up.Today, for instance. The Greatest Show On Earth takes its place, along with Showgirls and Battlefield Earth, in The Official Razzie Movie Guide: Enjoying The Best of Hollywood’s Worst. The Razzie guide was written by John Wilson, who in 1980 created the Razzie awards, an institution that has formalized the tongue-in-cheek attitude of celebrating the terrible. The Razzies honour the worst in Hollywood, but to be a connoisseur of the form, you must know the difference between films that are simply bad and those that are enjoyably so, and the Razzie BLACK CAT BOOKS - Now carrying a selection of new books -Quality used books - Special orders, new & used Open 7 days a week Guide seeks to preserve this second category.Bad films tread a fine line.To be successfully so bad that it's good, a movie must be sincere: anything by Ed Wood, for example, is fair game because he thought he was making art.A mock bad film, such as the 1978 horror film Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, comes with its quotation marks already in place; how could you laugh when the movie is already in on the joke? The Razzie guide includes instructions on likely places to rent its bad movies in case you are intrigued enough to want a video copy of, say, Beyond The Valley of the Dolls (sample See Razzies, Page 16 RECORD January 28 - February 3, 2005 page 9 - TALK " - Best of both worlds MM- * ^ „ for Debra Messing CANWESTNEWS ¦ i i ¦ Nick Mercer (Dermot Mulroney) and Kat Ellis (Debra Messing) in a scene from The Wedding Date, a film by Clare Kilner. It opens Feb.4.By Jamie Portman Given the subject matter of her new movie, it seems an obvious question for Debra Messing.Would she ever consider hiring a male escort in real life?As a matter of fact she would — but not, of course, for the reasons which motivate the insecure young woman she portrays in The Wedding Date.In the new romantic comedy opening Feb.4, she’s on view as angst-ridden Kat Ellis who forks out $6,000 for a handsome professional escort, played by Dermot Mulroney, to accompany her to her sister’s wedding in England in an attempt to make the best man — who just happens to be her exboyfriend — jealous.Once upon a time.Messing would have considered the idea of a male escort unthinkable “But having said that and now having done this movie, it seems like a wonderful idea,” she says.“You know, we all have responsibilities. We have weddings to go to and business trips to take and situations where we need a date or where a date would make a whole event so much more pleasant. So if you could hire a lovely gentleman to be on your arm and treat you exactly as you dictate — with no sex involved — it just seems like a brilliant idea.” Naturally, that’s not the scenario that unfolds in the movie, which is based on a novel by Elizabeth Young.Newcomer Dana Fox’s screenplay introduces a Kat who’s in a jangling state of nerves over her decision to hire this dreamboat and pass him off as her new boyfriend. Then she ends up falling for him. And, yes, sex does become a factor. It’s the 36-year-old Messing’s biggest film part yet.But despite her star billing and and the promise it holds for an expanded Hollywood career, she wants to make two things clear. The first is that she has no desire to part company with her hit NBC series, Will And Grace, or with her Emmy Award-winning role as Grace Adler.Secondly, as a happily married wife and mother, she definitely does not lead the chaotic emotional life of the character she portrays in this new movie. This is the last year of her contract with Will And Grace and she has no idea whether it will be renewed.“We’re hopeful.I know that all of us want to continue, but beyond that, we don’t know.” Then, she blushingly admits she isn’t even sure how it’s doing in the ratings.“I don’t keep track because my focus is on making apple sauce for my son when I get home, not on analyzing numbers.” Messing became a mother for the first time last April, and son Roman is a going concern for herself and her actor-screenwriter husband, Daniel Zelman. And she says the old cliche is true — parenthood definitely does change everything.“Once I was pregnant, everyone told me the same thing over and over again — you’ll never have experienced this kind of love, your whole world is going to change, you’re going to see life in a different way, nothing else is going to matter.I think a part of me felt that this was patronizing me in a way, but I can sit here now and say that every single thing that was said to me was true.” This auburn-haired beauty is one of those people who even manages to look elegant in a pair of faded jeans — an attribute evident today as she floats into the hotel suite and sits down with reporters to discuss matters of life, love and career. And if there’s one lesson she's learned, it's that nothing ever happens the way one expects it to happen —especially when it comes to romance.“I had a very regimented schedule for myself as a teenager.I had plans with a capital P, and that included college, it included graduate school, and it included being married by 22, having my first child by 26 and my second child by 28.It was all plotted out and needless to say none of that happened.” Well, some of it happened. She did study theatre at Brandeis University, and then followed it up with her master's in drama at New York University and also did further studies at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. But her marriage to Zelman is another matter: it was never a classic fairy tale romance.“You know, we’ve never been conventional people. Our courtship wasn’t conventional, our wedding wasn't conventional — the timing of everything in our lives has not really been conventional.” Yet now, she giggles, “we're absolutely conventional doting parents!” When she and Zelman first met, neither of them imagined they could ever be a couple.“In this movie Kat and Nick are as different as two people could be, and it seems they will never hâve a successful long-term relationship.I would say that Daniel and I were similarly different. Our courtship lasted a very long time, and we’ve now been together for 14 years and married for four.” So they’ve also been very best friends for a long time.“We met at NYU and we did everything together.I was on unemployment and he was on Broadway.Because of the obstacles you go through in life, you have to make choices and compromises, and we’ve always put each other first and family and love first, and 1 think that just gives me a great sense of peace and I think it helps with me keeping a sense of identity.“I still have creative dreams that are yet to be fulfilled, and I feel lucky and grateful to have the challenge of learning how to balance being a wife and a mother and a working woman.” —CanWest News Service GALAXY CINEMAS f 4204, boul, Bertrand-Fabi MOVIF INFO 821-9999 5H0WT1M€5 EFFECTIVE JAN.28TH TO FEB.3 L’ASSAUT DU POSTE 13 (I3Y ?Violence) Fri-Sun: 12:50, Ready or Not a 1 (CC) I My Family “Canary Cage" (12:05) Are You Being Served?Stewart becomes serious about songwriting Following the retrospective of 2004, some people have asked me to talk about recording artist Marty Stuart.Stuart has been a leading performer for a few years now, pairing with Travis Tritt at times for some great duets. In the past year or so, it seems like we have not heard much about his career. The tabloids recently reported he was arrested for driving under the influence.Once in a while we get a few words about his marriage to living legend Connie Smith.Actually, the last time we heard about Stuart in a good way was at the end of 2003 when he released his last album. The album, his first for Columbia Records, is not so new anymore but his fans will enjoy it while others might discover this talented singer/songwriter and accomplished guitarist.Country Music is his first one in four years and it offers a great and eclectic choice of tunes.Stuart has always been known for his rockabilly style and his reverence for the traditions of country music. It is still impressive to hear him honour traditional country music while keeping the sound so new and fresh. His last critically-acclaimed release was The Pilgrim. It was almost the turn of the century and also a time in Stuart’s career to get involved with something different. He soon got involved in team projects, collaboration such as scoring films, writing songs for other artists’ album, producing and recording soundtracks and of course lending his help as a musician to other artists’ recordings.Stuart’s wide ranging talents, from accomplished musician to songwriter and singer, give him the opportunity to explore different avenues, while still involved with music. This album was to be expected, since he started missing performing and recording. The time had come to resume his career as a solo artist.Making an album to follow-up the excellent, The Pilgrim, was no easy task for Marty Stuart, byt his love for country, and especially his great knowledge in the field, came as great help.He first decided to enlist collaborators that he would refer to, as ‘the fabulous Superlatives’, world class singers and musicians such as guitarist Kenny Vaughan, drummer Harry Stinson, and bassist Brian Glenn along with some very special guests, including Lucinda Williams and Steve Earle. Now that the instrumentation part was settled, Stuart had to do some serious songwriting. He got together with craftsmen such as Tom Douglas, which produced a haunting ballad titled 'Fool For Love.1 'Here I Am', was penned in collaboration with Rivers Rutheford while Paul Kennerly co-wrote one of the most fabulous love song titled 'If You Wanted Me Around'.There’s also 'Satisfied Mind', a cover of country legend Porter Wag-onner’s biggest hit. This cover was done with arrangements that will remind you of the work of the late Waylon Jennings. In most of his covers, Stuart always finds a way to pay a particular tribute to those who have influenced him at one point. He also covers one of Johnny Cash's lesser known songs, 'Walls of a Prison1, it comes across as an impersonation, but one can feel the respect that Stuart has for The Man In Black. He also offers the fans a duet with Merle Haggard titled Farmer’s Blues,' a song he co-wrote with his wife Connie Smith. This collaboration with Haggard is really impressive, and bound to touch those who consider Haggard as a hero. The collection also offers a great deal of genuine honky-tonkers, and this is part of what Marty Stuart is well known for.The light-hearted 'By George' is so catchy and infectious that it won’t leave you indifferent. You’ll need to move even if you can’t dance.Fans will easily relate to, the so true, 'Too Much Month (At The End Of The Money).' The hip-hop incorporation in ‘If There Ain’t, There Ought’a Be’ will remind you of Toby Keith’s ‘I Wanna Talk About Me’.It sure is a fun song, but it is not really Stuart’s style. What worked perfectly for a Toby Keith does not necessarily do justice to Stuart.Featuring more his ‘Fabulous Superlatives’ vocally and musically could have been very interesting.Although, I must admit that the instrumentation is outstanding and the balance between the different tempo is perfect. The album is not over produced or polished. It is just enough to keep country music like it is suppose to be.This album should have been a triumphant return for the artist, but radio hardly played the new record. It all has to do with pre-established criteria that the radio industry imposes in order for a song to be radio friendly.Don’t let this deprive you from buying a great record that will bring you hours of pleasurable listening.Well, I hope this answers all the questions you sent my way.If anyone wants to year about a specific artist, just send your request by fax to The Record 819-569-3945 or directly to me at 819-564-7081.Country Connection Jessie Aulis |TIIE| page 16 January 28 - February 3, 2005 RECORD TALK Razzies: Cont’d from Page 8 dialogue from the screenplay written by Roger Ebert: “This is my happening, and it freaks me out!”) It helps to get into the spirits of the thing: anyone watching Santa Claus Conquers the Martians sober deserves what he gets. The Official Razzie Movie Guide gives each of its bad movies a rather banal plot description, a few excerpts of reviews, and a line of dialogue or bit of trivia that are more to the point.Even the familiar is worth preserving between book covers: Anne Baxter as Nefertiti in The Ten Commandments, saying: “Oh Moses, Moses! You stubborn, splendid, adorable fool!” is an evergreen classic. The guide is not the first book to compile bad movies: The Fifty Worst Films of All Time by Harry Medved and Randy Dreyfuss, The Worst Movies of All Time by Michael Sauter, and Bad Movies We Love by Edward Margulies and Stephen Rebello, are among the references to which the Razzie guide points.Unique here is a full list of former Razzie nominees and winners, which is good to have in case you succumb to an irresistible impulse to rent Gigli, which swept the Razzies last year.A hipper entry in the niche of offbeat film guides comes from Britain. The second edition of the Rough Guide to Cult Movies by Paul Simpson describes itself as a guide to “the good, the bad and the very weird.” Published in a handy, pocket-sized form, the Rough Guides are a familiar brand of travel books, music guides and reference publications — there are Rough Guides to Shakespeare, Cult Fiction and Muhammad Ali, among many other things.) The Rough Guide people define cult movies as movies that people quote a lot, are under-appreciated, are undiscovered gems, are so bad they’re funny, or generally are unforgettable or juiced-up or are not a Police Academy sequel.Pulp Fiction is in the Rough Guide — indeed, Uma Thurman is on the cover — and so is 8 Heads In A Duffel Bag, which they sort of like.So is Mogambo, a 1953 John Ford movie with Clark Gable and Grace Kelly.Mogambo is under the “Dubbed” section: an adulterous affair between Gable and Kelly was too much for Spanish censors, so they demanded new dialogue be dubbed in to make it seem that the characters were committing incest instead. The book comes with a gold mine of trivia (the F-word is used 246 times in Goodfellas), bits of dialogue, and fascinating miscellany (the Top-10 documentaries to feature Josip Brosz Tito, for instance, including the unforgettable 1958 entry, Seventh Congress of The Communist Union of Yugoslavia.) The new edition of the Rough Guide is an updated version that includes new genres (cars, nuns.Nazis), new trivia, and more entries in one of its intriguing features, celebrity picks of favourite cult films. You may not be able to live without it.The Official Razzie Movie Guide, by John Wilson, Warner Books, $19.95; The Rough Guide to Cult Movies, by Paul Simpson, Rough Guides, $18.99.—Can West News Service Music | Jan.28 Friday, 8 p.m., Bandeen Hall in Lennoxville, Cheryl Stroud, piano.Works by scarlatti, Beethoven, Chopin, Rachmaninoff, and GinasteraAdmis-sion: $15 adult., $10 senior, $7 students.Jan.29 DANCE at the Army Navy Air Force Unit 318, 300 St-Francis St., Lennoxville on Saturday, from 9 p.m.to 1 a.m.Music by Steve Aulis.Everyone Welcome! Cube’s casting in the new XXX sequel touched off an Internet storm from fans of the original film and its gravel-voiced star, Vin Diesel.“Ice Cube will ruin the franchise,” one fervent Diesel admirer complained. But, other moviegoers came to Cube’s defence, saying he would be an improvement on the original XXX which was “the stupidest movie ever with oiie of the worst actors ever.” Cube says the new film, which opens in late spring, is not a reworking of what Diesel did.He plays a totally new character, special agent Darius Stone, who becomes enmeshed in a high-stakes Washington power struggle. His costars are Samuel L.Jackson and Willem Dafoe, and the director is Lee Tamahori of Die Another Day fame.“I’m happy with it,” Cube says.“I play a new agent.I’m not trying to be the same guys. It’s a whole other assignment that’s needed and they need a whole other guy to do it.” —Can West News Service
