albeit gentle conflict - between Muslim and Christian neighbours.I’m not so sure about that either. The show seems to bend over backwards Oscar By Jay Stone Postmedia News This year’s Academy Awards have an old-fashioned feel, and one reason is that, of the nine nominees for best movie, only one is set entirely in the present day: The Descendants, a contemporary drama, to be sure, but hardly at the cutting edge of modern thought, just look at George Clooney’s wardrobe.Another of the films, Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris, begins today, but it soon hearkens back to another era. It’s about a Hollywood screenwriter named Gil, played by Owen Wilson, who finds a magic portal back to the 1920s in France, when Ernest Hemingway and F.Scott Fitzgerald sat around bistros and Gertrude Stein held salons of the famous and creative. The film is bathed in the glow of nostalgia for the Belle Epoque, an implicit rejection of the shallow culture of Gil’s fiancee and her right-wing parents - and of the shallow Hollywood movies that to show all the characters as “just regular people” who do gosh-darn crazy things, and maybe that’s what irks me after watching the last two episodes. In spite of what it deals with, the characters are generic sitcom types in spite of what they wear. The action takes place in the fictional town of Mercy, Saskatchewan and the premise is that construction contractor Yasir Hamoudi (played by Carlo Rota, an actor with real presence who is now off Gil writes - and an embrace of an earlier, more golden age.Gil even runs into Luis Bunuel and suggests the plot of a movie: a dinner party where guests can’t leave.A few decades later, Bunuel was to make The Exterminating Angel. It’s an idealized past, the opposite of the fraught, if softened, vision of history you see in other nominated films, such as War Horse (brutality and slaughter in the First World War), The Tree of Life (the failed dreams of the middle class in 1950s Texas) or The Help (the bad days of segregation and racism in the American South in the 1960s).The world is warmer when we’re at the movies. The two most nominated films, Hugo and The Artist, are very much about that.Like the time-travel sequences in Midnight in Paris, they take place at the time when modern culture was being born.Hugo is set in the 1930s, but its mystery revolves around the French Filmmaker Georges Melies, who helped invent cinema itself at the turn of the the show) works a deal with the local church so that they can share space as a mosque, and so that Hamoudi can get free office space. His wife Sarah Cunningham (played by Sheila McCarthy who must get more gigs in Canadian TV and movies than I’ve had hot meals) is a convert to Islam and struggles to deal with both the religion and her job as the mayor’s PR assistant. The romance interest is between their daughter who is the local doctor, Rayyan (Sitara Hewitt) 20th century.Buried inside a Dickensian story about an orphan and a lost locket, Hugo comes alive when it pays tribute to Melies, recreating some of his classic sequences, most memorably, his 1902 film A Trip to the Moon.Director Martin Scorsese, a dedicated film historian, takes special delight in showing the joy and magic of early filmmaking, the “special effects” that were dreamt up by innovators like Melies to baffle and entertain audiences. They’re still more than charming: A montage of Melies films at the end of Hugo is a brilliant record of innovation.Another sequence - Harold Lloyd dangling from a clock in the 1923 silent Safety Last! - transports the movie’s young heroes into the world of cinema and reminds us of the genius that was once commonplace. The Artist takes place in the 1920s, just as the silent movie era was being overtaken by the talkies. It is a more explicit tribute, if only because it takes on the form it is honouring: a silent movie, and the newly hired young liberal imam, Amar Rashid (Zaib Shaikh) whose wealthy parents want him to quit this crazy religion business and go back to being a lawyer. There are plenty of other characters that I could describe, from the bigoted radio DJ to the Nigerian restaurant owner, who always has a sarcastic retort for her customers, but there isn’t enough space, and you would probably recognize most of them as stock characters from over 50 other sitcoms. The sixth season begins with Rayyan and Amar coming back to Mercy from their honeymoon to find out that Yasir is staying in Lebanon permanently and divorcing his wife of 31 years, Sarah. So now the local minister is trying to get Sarah to convert back to Christianity and Sarah has to adjust to being single again.and so it goes. You can see why the show is in its last season. They’ve simply run out of story and with actor Carlo Rota, leaving the show, a single Sarah is about all the story that they’re going to get.Monday’s night episode with the new imam and the new minister trying to prove who could fast the longest was just ridiculous and not funny at all.You could have been watching Corner Gas, another snoozer. While I applaud the idea of Canadian comedies reflecting what’s going on in our country, different ethnic and religious groups trying to get by with conflicting customs and beliefs, if a show is poorly written and directed, the theme can’t save it.Upcoming highlights: HBO premieres a new series starring Dustin Hoffman, Luck, Saturday at 9 p.m.Happy watching! in black and white, shot with an aspect ratio (the screen size) that is almost square.Director Michel Hazanavicius even sped up the film a little to replicate the look of silent movies. There’s a sense of loss, as we see the charming silent-film star George Valentin (played by Jean Dujardin) losing his career to talking pictures, but the plot is almost secondary: The very fact of the movie itself, its lovable stars (including Uggie the dog) and simple, strong storytelling, is proof of what was lost. Some people say The Artist is just a gimmick run amok, but people who love it are responding to its purity.Any feeling of self-congratulation (“look at me.I’m enjoying a silent film”) is soon replaced by the sheer joy of the enterprise. One of the revelations to a modern audience is how much can be told silently: Dujardin is nominated as best actor for his performance as the casually charming Valentin, whose career ConTd on page 4 When silence is golden: nominations take us back to an earlier era TALK newsroom@sherbrookcrecord.com January 27 - February 2, 2012 Page 3 A voice that’s country to the core Kellie Pickier is honest, true to herself Country Connection Jessie Aulis Kellie Pickler’s latest studio album, 100 Proof, is nothing short of out of this world. The new collection is a great mix of traditions and contemporary, beautifully produced and delivered. On this third release, we discover that Kellie Pickier has matured a lot and is in total command of her artistry.Often, because of her bubbly personality, her contagious laugh and her undeniable charm fans tend to forget that Pickier can deliver some very memorable performances and make you cry.Pickler’s first two albums established her as both a singer and as a songwriter but the top-ten hit “Best Days of Your Life,” co-written with Taylor Swift is what really got her the attention of everyone. Each album showed growth, not only as an artist but also in her personal life.If you ever have a chance to see her in concert, you will notice that she is true to herself. She is a real honest country girl, raised on country classics, living a country lifestyle. This new album takes you through what has been and is her story. She effortlessly sings straight from her heart in a way that could only be innate. The first thing you notice when you listen to this new album is most likely how Pickier has a real country voice. She’s got a genuine love for classic country music and you can hear it.In countless interviews, she’s mentioned her avid listening to traditional country artists such as Tammy Wynette, Dolly Parton, and Loretta Lynn and you can hear everyone of these great singers in Pickler’s voice. One thing that really separates her from the rest of the girl singers is her devotion to telling a real story. She has lived what she sings about. The romping stomping lead single “Tough” is a tough chick anthem in which Pickier explains that the harshness of life has made her tough. And yet despite her toughness Jesus still loves her.The video for the lead single, “Tough,” draws from the singer’s real-life childhood relationship with her father.About this touching music video for “Tough,” the petite singer said in many interviews, “There was so much healing in shooting this one.” That song was penned for Pickier by acclaimed songwriter Leslie Satcher.“Stop Cheating on Me" is hauntingly beautiful.“Where’s Tammy Wynette" and “Unlock That Honky Tonk” are homegrown, stripped and have unmistakably country instrumentation.“Mother’s Day," written by Pickier and her new hubby Kyle Jacobs, is not a sugarcoated syrupy number. It tells the story of a girl dreaming of what she would do on Mother’s Day if she ever had a mom.Dean Dillon, Marty Dodson and Pickier contributed “Long as 1 Never See You Again." With a backing full of fiddles and steel over a heart-wrenching set of lyrics, this old-fashion sounding waltz is the kind of song that George Strait would die for.Another Dillon/Dodson/Pickler composition is the tearful and beautiful piano ballad, “The Letter (To Daddy)." You can easily imagine Pickier writing this letter to her dad.“Turn On The Radio and Dance” has a nostalgic feel, and the title is a good indication of what the song is all about.Produced by Frank Liddell (Miranda Lambert, Lee Ann Womack) and Luke Wooten, 100 Proof features a very earthy quality with a less-is-more approach from Cont’d on page 4 I < m Æ m / : fi ' Il./ ; 1 i / li n i Wm* if,/ «4 ,w - nflHH -, mmm mm AY A OMAC ^^^¦MARTINEZ Ik^ÜÉiK-i/ COHEN FRIDAY, FRIDAY, MONDAY.JANUARY 27", B PM FEBRUARY 3'°, 8 PM FEBRUARY A11,8 PM FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 3®, 8 PM Mexico - Latin-American songs with a jazzy touch.FRANCE - Today’s Piaf.Intense, generous and with a powerful voice.Songs in French, English and Spanish.81?822-V692 • WWW.CENTENNIALTHEATRE.CA Recent addition to the program ap pncrro/i9/BNA ^cSS èpiipB i*i sær Page 4 January 27 - February 2, 2012 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com TALK Paris hiatus GOOGLE1MAGES Maykel Stone of Rein de 9.¦ XM L.Outside the Box Kelly McDevitt A few days after New Year’s, I packed a bag, boarded a plane and landed in Paris. No, not for some whirlwind romance (alas!).Nor was it a vacation in the relax-all-day, do-what-you-want, see-the-sights kind of way, although there were sights and I saw ’em.Instead I landed in Paris with 12 very heavy novels in my bag.Nine of them were mine, the other three were for classmates because that’s why I was there: school.See, I signed up for an exchange seminar - one week in Paris with four other Montrealers, three teachers and six students from a Parisian university. In the spring, the Parisian teachers and students will come to Montreal for another round of intense intellectual discussions on another set of heavy books. It was a wonderful experience.I met lovely, intelligent people who took us under their wings - showing us the city, taking us to their favourite restaurants and bookstores, talking about literature, politics, art, music, moviefc and everything else young intellectual types are supposed to talk about.1 practiced my French, ate in a four-hundred-year-old restaurant where the Musketeers used to eat, stood in front of the Van Gogh painting I copied in high school, saw a brothel Toulouse Lautrec used to frequent with his Bohemian buddies, and ate a delicious meal in the largest mosque in France. So you’ll forgive me, dear readers, that with all the hustle and bustle of the seminars, reading, sightseeing, galleries, museums and restaurants (not to mention missing my flight) I haven’t had much time for web series. Now I’m back, with a much better understanding of French culture and of the people who live there. So I thought this week we’d go French. After all, one of the great things about web series is that they can reach out across international borders.(Coincidentally, my class was on border literatures.) First, for a little geeky comedy, I recommend the website www.frenchn-erd.com.There, in addition to podcasts, video blogs, music and fan art, you’ll find a number of nerd-themed comedy web series. Most of them are silly sketch comedy (1 admit I don’t always get the humour) but I like the site’s frontrunning show Le Visiteur du Futur. It follows an intrepid time traveller who warns Parisian youth about how to prevent the apocalypse. It’s silly, but good for a few laughs.Next up is Nothing New (Rein de 9), a series set in Strasbourg that follows the personal lives of a group of young friends. This semi-autobiographical series begins with the breakup of Maykel and Johannes.Maykel has a hard time adjusting to the spilt until his friends Margaret, Esther and Greg get involved - then things seem to get even more complicated. The production quality is very low in the first few episodes (you can hear the cameraman working the zoom on the camera), but it gets much better as the season progresses. You can watch all three seasons at http://riende9.com.Finally, there’s Armorik Sanguine, a dark, edgy drama in the style of Britain’s successful TV series Skins. After the death of his parents, Ulysse moves from Paris to a house he inherits in Brittany. There he meets Alexis by chance and falls in with his group of friends, whose pastimes mostly include drugs, alcohol and dance music. When a party at his house suddenly goes wrong, Ulysse and his friends find themselves covering up a terrible secret. If you like dubstep and British indie rock, the soundtrack alone makes this series worth watching.I highly recommend watching it at http://www.armoriksanguine.com.Readers be warned, the English subtitles for each of these series are mediocre at best.Keep your ears peeled and practice your French to fully appreciate them.Country Connection Cont’d from page 3 instrumentation to production.Pickier has finally found where she belongs and in finding herself, the singer lets her country roots thrive, letting us know that her boots are firmly placed on country soil. One listen to 100 Proof, will transport the fans through generations and decades of great country music. The young woman brings back the twang of the steel guitar in a classic way, with long instrumentals of plucky guitar playing and drawling vocals. It makes you feel like you are sitting in a smoky honky tonk listening to true talent, a country girl, on a small stage, pouring her heart out and sincerely telling her story. This artist may not possess the vocal range of Carrie Underwood but who cares?Much like Tammy and Loretta, the tear in her voice is hard to miss. What she sings is a lot more convincing and to most people the emotion means a lot more. The return of mournful steel guitar, crying fiddles and a voice that’s country to the core is a refreshing change from the recent stream of rock-infused country.Kellie Pickier, you have all the attention! Go ahead and sing — the world is listening to you! This album is a masterpiece of beauty and honesty, a gem to keep forever.Oscar nominations Cont’d from page 2 collapses, leaving him without work, money, or even white tie and tails.Likewise, Berenice Bejo is nominated as best supporting actress for her role as the ingenue who loves Valentin, even as her rising career eclipses his.A scene where she sneaks into his dressing room, puts her arm through the sleeve of his jacket and wraps it around herself is a beautiful example of how eloquently a wordless performance can tell a story.Oddly, another silent performance in another movie is also up for an Oscar: Max von Sydow’s turn as the mysterious old man known only as The Renter in Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close. The Renter is recruited by young Oskar (a discovery named Thomas Horn), whose father has died in the 9/11 disaster and who is trying to trace the meaning of a key he has found among the dead man’s effects. The lock that it opens, he feels, might be a final message horn his father.Oskar is at once chatty, emotionally unstable, brilliant, quirky, irritating and heartbroken (the character also has Asperger’s syndrome), and von Sydow plays against this with a quieter sort of devastation. We’re meant to understand that he had his own 9/11 moment - the Second World War bombing of Dresden - and that, ever since, he speaks only by writing things on a pad of paper. It’s the equivalent of the intertitles of a silent movie like The Artist.Von Sydow's silence also evokes an emotional richness - people who don’t talk somehow seem deeper - and he manages, with just the shifting of a brow or a quarter-smile, to suggest everything from tragedy to puckishness. In a scene where Oskar wants him to fill out an information form about his life (Oskar is a compulsive list-keeper).The Renter regards the paper with a mixture of curiosity and disbelief that no words could have replaced.Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close is too emotionally manipulative to work, but its instinct - to simplify global disaster, to find meaning in it - is a common theme. If movies are our dreams, we’re longing to step through Woody Allen’s magic doors and go back to a golden, and less noisy, past. The revelation is more than a little troubling: his first thought is that the forensics lab might have screwed up the DNA results.Or perhaps the detectives handling the case had cross-contaminated it with evidence from another case.Either way, if the discrepancy can’t be explained it will cast doubts on hundreds of other cases, opening the way for defense lawyers to overturn convictions and have their clients — many of whom may be guilty — walk free.Bosch is pondering how to handle the issue when another case falls in his lap.George Irving, lawyer and son of an influential city councilor — an ex-cop himself — has just been found dead at the foot of a high-rise hotel, the Chateau Marmont, a favoured haunt of the rich and famous. Was Irving a “drop” (the term refers to jaded police jargon for jumpers) or was he pushed? The father, a city councilman and lifelong adversary of Bosch’s, has put pressure on the chief of police to assign Harry Bosch to the case.Although they can’t stand one another, the councillor is convinced that only Bosch will get to the bottom of things and tell him the truth. It’s not an assignment Bosch can pass on: the councillor has substantial influence, the power to block crucial police budget appropriations, and a well-known hostility toward the department. He’s also running for re-election.Although the two cases are very different, they share a common feature: nothing adds up.The victim in the cold case rape-and-murder was a young woman, yet Clayton Pell is known to be gay; and bruises found on George Irving’s body suggest he was assaulted by someone trained in police choke-hold techniques prior to his death, techniques that had been abandoned many years earlier. Was an officer involved? As Bosch threads his way carefully between the two cases he encounters a psychologist treating Pell at a halfway house who is convinced that Pell cannot be the rapist in the cold case, and when Bosch looks into George Irving’s death, he learns that Irving’s son had returned from university in San Francisco to be with his bereaved family on an airline ticket purchased before his father's death, and paid for by his father. To add to his problems Bosch is troubled by media leaks that threaten to compromise his case and seem to be coming from inside the force. But the councilman had been right about one thing: nothing will deter Bosch from getting to the bottom of things. And so Bosch tangles with his adversaries, both past and present, as he moves inexorably closer to the truth.A compelling tale that will engage renders Tight, layered plotting and a compelling narrative are hallmarks of Michael Connelly’s work, whose novels dominate West Coast crime fiction. But in The Drop the reader is also treated to an engaging sub-plot involving Bosch’s teenage daughter and his concern for her happiness following the death of his late wife.Equally intriguing are the per- jU.lf ( $ t » « * * t u * « vW#* », w.m®tM iwmi.sonal relationships that constantly promise romance tor the detective, but which seem ultimately to be doomed.A knight-errant from another era, Bosch's unwavering sense of personal values seems always to get in the way of his own happiness.77ie Drop is a true tour de force, then, grounded in the complex realities of the world, but wrapped around an inventive, compelling tale that will engage readers on many levels. For more on Michael Connelly’s novels go to www.michaelconnelly.com.Jim Napier can be reached at jnapier@deadlydiversions.com See ysur Bill Brew \ Development " and Peace 1 888 234-8533 www.devp.0r9 CINEPLEX C3AL./VXY Sherbrooke Cinemas 4204.boul, Bertrand-Fabi BUY TICKETS NOW ON CINEPLEX.COM digm ,¦ « 5H0WTIM65 €FF€CTIV€ JANUARY 27 TO FEBRUARY 2 2012 l€S AVENTURÉS D€ TINTIN 3D (G) FRHHUR5 1:05, 3:35, 7:05, 9:35 ALVIN €T LES CHIPMUNKS 165 NAUFRAGÉS (G) FRI-SAT,MON-WED 12:50, 3:20, 6:50; Peele is African-American.Together, they hope to cast new light on the absurdity of “just getting along.” Peele brings a talent for mimicry to Key & Peele: His MADtv impersonations included dead-on impressions of Montel Williams, Morgan Freeman, Forest Whitaker, Flavor Flav, James Brown, Ja Rule - and, in the interests of ethnic diversity, original American Idol finalist, Justin Guarini. In 2008, Peele was nominated for an Emmy for the song parody, Sad Fifty Cent, a music-video riff on 50 Cent’s falling out with Kanye West.“We’ve done the president thing,” Key noted earlier this month, in Los Angeles.EVERETT COLLECTION Keegan-Michael Key 1114» “We elected that guy. He’s half-white.Maybe America’s ready for this, too. That’s our hope. We’ll see.” The point of Key & Peele, Peele said, is that “people” are people, too.African-Americans can be just as much geeks and fanboys as Caucasians who still live at home.“Obama was the best thing for black nerds everywhere,” Peele said.“Finally, we had a role model.” “Exactly,” Key chimed in.“It’s OK for black people to walk down the street saying, ‘Yeah! Star Trek!’" “Before Obama,” Peele added sadly, “we basically had Urkel.” So, basically, Key continued, “we had a cartoon as a role model.” And don’t get them started on “Lamar” in Revenge of the Nerds.“Part of this is that we live in this world where we’ve grown up identifying ourselves as African-Americans,” Peele said, serious for a moment.“In this sketch show, part of the sketch is going to be pushing the boundaries of sketch. You have to have a new voice. You have to be saying something new. That was our cue to say, look, man, we have this thing in common, which is being bira-cial, and we can examine stereotypes.Or lack of stereotypes.Whatever fits.” Key & Peele is a bit of a cheat, Key said, “a way to be able to do a show that two other fellas couldn’t pull off.” Key and Peele are both biracial.“Black dads, white mothers,” Key said.“My father grew up in Salt Lake, Utah, with the 12 other black people. And my mother was from a little town in northern Illinois. They met in Detroit. That was rough for my dad, because it’s just the blackest city in the world. So that’s my background.” Key sees Key & Peele as being part of an extended campaign against bullying.“I will say this, and I love this about my partner,” Key said.“We both hate bullying. We hate people being mean in EVERETT COLLECnON Jordan Peele comedy for no reason.Everything we do, we always grind, grind, grind on the frame of a scene to try to figure out how to make it funny. We want to appeal to everything, whether you’re from Iceland or Indonesia, and then we’ll put whatever the filter is on top.I’ve never understood why you would want to be offensive for no reason.I never understood the comedian who goes, ‘If you don’t get it, whatever.’ No, that’s not it.Maybe you’re not funny.” Key & Peele premieres Tuesday, Jan.31 on The Comedy Network at 10:30 p.m.WEEKDAY MORNING Bell Star 10:30 11 AM CNN IDISC HIST RDI SHOW SLICE SPIKE TLC TSN YOUTH 500 500 520 505 522 126 616 601 628 521 WCAX O - .News j CBS This Morning Rachael Ray Dr.Phil The Price Is Right WPTZ O - - Newschannel 5 Today at 6AM Today Live!
