allowed to deteriorate Organ: Cont’d from Page 1 The “pearl in the crown” was the purchase of an organ from Casavant Frères of Saint-Hyacinthe, number 611, for $2,350.“It is a small organ, but fitted the need for a small parish,” says Baker. The organ served the parish until the 1980s, when the instrument began to deteriorate.Organ maintenance was neglected after the parish purchased a small electronic organ, far inferior in sound quality to the Casavant on the upper balcony, but more economical for a rural parish.Past repairs performed by Mariste Brother Aurèle Laramée slowed but did not stop the deterioration, which could have only been reversed by expensive and professional servicing. As the pipe organ fell into disuse, its deterioration proceeded unchecked.Yet the unit, located on the upper balcony, was never removed. In 2000, the church formed a committee to look into restoration of the organ.Baker credits Father André Vincent and volunteer Marc Fontaine, who performed some vital repairs to get the instrument partially playable again, with energizing the project.Baker says the committee was able to reduce the cost of the restoration by recruiting local volunteers willing to provide some of the manual labour, and by-scaling back expectations.“ We could have increased the number of ranks, but that proved too costly,” she notes, adding major restoration work will be performed by the firm Laliberté.Baker, a pianist who is now learning to play organ, gave a demonstration of the sound produced by the powerful instrument. When the electric blower is turned on, the keyboardist seated at the balcony console hears a hiss of air escaping from the leaking valves that open and close each pipe. The individual pipes from each of the 11 “ranks” must be removed and cleaned of the debris that has settled in them after decades of disuse.Leak- ing seals must also be fixed, and a host of other critical repairs will have to be completed before the instrument recaptures its former voice.Despite the neglect, some ranks still function, but the 30-note pedal rank that provides the deep bass tones is currently unplayable. When completed, the instrument will be used not only for services, but to provide public concerts.Baker says plans are already underway for courses to train local organists, as well as an introductory course for children so that they can experience first hand live music from “the king of instruments.” If the volunteers succeed, Casavant #611 should be restored to its former glory by fall.In the meantime, the restoration committee is investigating grants and launching a major capital campaign to bring this remarkable community asset back to life. Those interested in making a tax-deductible donation to help restore the organ may contact Monique Baker at 450-248-7127.CAROLINE KEHNE/CORRESPONDENT UppBttg * * ?* » 4 If all goes according to plans, Casavant #611 should be restored to its former glory by fall.CHANCES ARE THERE'S Bedford. The session is open to all area women who would like to improve their English reading, writing or math skills.YLC will also hold a session in Man-sonville on Monday, March 24 at the Potton Learning Centre, located in Man-sonville Elementary School. Both information sessions are free of charge.YLC Co-ordinator Wendy Seys told The Record these sessions are part of the organization’s overall goal of increasing its outreach efforts to potential tutors and adult students in the Bedford, Mansonville and Waterloo areas.“For those of us who read and write, we can hardly imagine a world where the letters truly appear as hieroglyph- ics,” said YLC President Joan Tannen-baum.“Where we have to feign comprehension because everyone else can read the notice posted.Where we don’t know where to go because we can’t read the street signs.Where we can’t help our children with their homework because we can’t read the instructions.“We are hoping to make as many people as possible aware of the Council’s existence, and enroll as many students and tutors as we can.” The YLC is a non-profit organization that helps English-speaking adults in Brome-Missisquoi communities improve their literacy, mat, and life skills.Students are individually paired with trained tutors who volunteer their time and expertise.Seys calls literacy “a fundamental right,” and points out that maintaining good literacy and learning skills are important at any stage in life.“Studies show that literacy skills are like muscles: The more you use them, the stronger they become. And in order to maintain good literacy skills, you have to use them regularly. It’s the ‘use it or lose it’ principle," she concluded. The YLC is looking for volunteers from the Waterloo area who would like to be tutors.Training is provided at no charge to the volunteer. The Avante Women’s Centre is located at the Le R.O.C.building, 52 Dupont St., Bedford. For more information, call 450-263-7503, or the YLC (toll free) at This is generally followed by hypothermia, you salivate more than usual, your blood flow gets out of order, and your pupils get dilated.3) Fainting: This phase is usually rare. All symptoms get worse. You lose your concentration, you can get headaches, and hypoglycaemia can cause you to faint.Remedies - Drive on highways rather than on little winding roads.- Always look outside the vehicle.• Stop frequently and take walks.• Do not leave with an empty stomach to avoid hypoglycaemia.- You can try lying down and not moving your head if symptoms are getting worse. There are some medications that can limit motion sickness but these medications are only preventive.Have a nice drive! définition du phénomène terroriste. Walk-a-thon fundraiser for C&C Foundation By Caroline Kehne Record Correspondent Cowansville alunteers will sponsor a walk-a-thon on June 1 to raise money for the Eastern Townships chapter of the Chrons and Colitis Foundation of Canada.Organizer Gayl Rhicard says that registration will begin at noon at the Cow- Vs V Ea ansville Royal Canadian Legion located at 120 Davignon Street. The 2.5-km walk, which begins and ends at the Legion, will officially begin at 1 p.m.There will also be entertainment for children, including a magician, face painting, a barbecue and door prizes. For more information, call Gayl Rhicard at 450-248-3456.
