Page 12 Wednesday, April 25, 2012 ne\vsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record I’ve told Dear Annie: My sister owns seven cats, three dogs, two turtles and a lizard. They are overrunning her house. There are random bits of garbage all over the floor, along with used dishes — both human and pet. When the dogs do their business in the house, she lets it stay there for hours while she gets other work done. The last time I was there, I wiped some food off of the wall, and she said 1 was being rude. Two months ago, one of her dogs died.A week later, she bought a new one for $750.1 happen to know she now has less than $100 in her bank account. And I worry she might lose her job.Her co-workers have complained that her clothing is sloppy and covered in dog hair.I’ve told her many times that she has too many pets. She replies that it’s not my business and storms off.I suggested she give me one of her dogs or cats, and she told me she would simply buy more.I believe her.How can I make her see the light?— Concerned Sister Dear Concerned: To some extent, your sister is right: This isn’t your business.A messy home and dog-haired clothing may not be your preference, but they aren’t necessarily a health risk. She is depleting her bank balance in order to purchase animals, but then, some people do that with shoes. There can be a fine line between eccentric behavior that is within acceptable boundaries and behavior that indicates mental illness. We don’t think your sister has crossed that line, but she bears watching. So stop criticiz-ing her choices, but keep an eye on whether her appearance and the condition of her house substantially deteriorate, whether she goes into debt and whether the animals are well treated. And let her know you will be a sympathetic shoulder if she ever needs help managing.Dear Annie: Our neighbor, “Harvey,” her many times that she has too many pets is a homosexual and fre-quently has various men UUC ® stay at his house overnight — sometimes more than one at a time. Here’s the problem: We have an 11-year-old son, and though Harvey is nice to him and a good neighbor to us, should we keep our son from any association with Harvey? My husband doesn’t seem to think there’s any problem, but one can never be too safe when it comes to protecting your children.— Sleepless in Seattle Dear Seattle: Harvey should be treated no differently than any adult neighbor who has frequent overnight guests, male or female, presumably for intimate purposes. You wouldn’t want his casual promiscuity (if that’s what it is) to be something your son emulates in his own life, but we assume you would discuss such things with your child as a normal part of transmitting your values and morals. It has nothing to do with Harvey’s sexual orientation, nor does it make him a greater risk to your son’s welfare. And if your real worry is whether association with Harvey will make your son gay, the answer is no.Dear Annie: This is for “Not a Mommy,” the woman who doesn’t care to hold someone’s infant.I, too, am not fond of babies (except for my grandchildren), but I have found myself in the same awkward situation when an employee brings her baby to visit the office. Two tips that work for me: Never go alone into the room where the baby is on display. And don’t put yourself in the front tier.Touch the baby so the parent doesn’t think you are a complete ogre, but when asked, “Don’t you want to hold him?” reply, “Oh, let So-and-So.I can see that she’s dying to.” Then quietly make your exit.— Chris from Maine Dear Chris: Good advice for the baby-averse.Thanks.Dear Annie: I read the letter from Mailbox New York Where It s 20 Degrees Outside.” He said his wife has hot flashes and wants to set the thermostat down, but he likes it at 74 so he can run around in his underwear. She's ready to move out.He thinks she’s being selfish. We also are from upstate New York, and 1 think he is the selfish one.He can dress in layers, put on a sweater or buy himself a parka. On the other hand, there is just so much that she can take off.Yes, he may pay the bills, but I wonder who cooks, cleans, does the laundry, shops and cares for the children.— Long-Time Reader, First-Time Responder Dear Long-Time Reader: That letter made a lot of readers “hot” under the collar.Read on for more: From Wisconsin: Tell him to turn the heat down and put the money he saves toward those mortgage payments he is so smug about.Better yet, donate it to a charity that helps cover energy bills for those who aren’t able to pay them.Boston: I have never in my long life said this to anyone, but what a jerk! My husband and I have had this same problem. Our thermostat is set at 69.He wears sweats and warm slippers, and 1 wear T-shirts.This is not about who pays the mortgage, but about your attitude toward your partner.Indiana: No one needs to suffer from hot flashes. As soon as my doctor prescribed an antidepressant, it was like someone flipped a switch.Chicago: As a woman in her eighth year of hot flashes and night sweats, I have learned some coping skills. Many women cannot take hormone replacement.I have found some relief in yoga, breathing techniques and mindful meditation.I suggest the wife find a room she can call her own and keep it at a temperature that is comfortable for her. This time is a natural progression in women’s lives and should be em- braced.I hope her journey is a short one.California: Thirty years ago, due to surgery, I had hot flashes. An acquaintance told me her ob-gyn recommended vitamin E.It worked! It took six weeks to kick in, but, oh, the relief! Georgia: I urge you to exercise extreme caution in recommending natural remedies for hot flashes. These treatments are unregulated and can contain a variety of harmful substances, and they don’t have to have any of these on their labels.People should be very careful. For further information, contact the Centers for Disease Control toxicology division in Atlanta.Upstate New York: What an inconsiderate husband. It’s his choice to wear nothing around the house, so he should be willing to suffer the consequences. We keep our house at 65 degrees.Sweaters and slippers are comfortable and healthier than 74 degrees. We sleep well and even better when I get the gas bill.Last time I checked, it was “our” house, not “my” house.California: I have had brief hot flashes since 2008.They only seem to last forever.I have a hand fan by my bed and recliner, and I carry a folding one in my purse. In the winter, I step outside for a few minutes.1 take care of myself without inconveniencing anyone else, but 1 will be glad when they are over.Florida: I’ve been in that gentleman’s shoes for a number of years and had the same complaint.Six months ago, however, I suffered male hot flashes as a result of a hormone imbalance.Having been on the other side, I can tell him that it is a very unpleasant experw ence and one over which you have no control.Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column.Mansonville Golden Age Club news April 10 - We had dinner at the Reilly House and much to my delight, we had Aggie s special - macaroni and cheese! They served ham with it and we also had a tossed salad, tea and coffee, and a fruit pie for dessert.Yummy!
