By Caroline Kehne Record Correspondent Knowlton Auditions for Sunshine Theatre’s production of Oliver! will take place April 26, noon at Knowlton Academy. No prior stage or musical experience is required.“We’re always looking for new people we haven’t seen in past productions. And for kids, lots of kids,” says director Doug Hooper.Sunshine Theatre has recruited artist Peter Raymond, who also painted the canvas used in Sunshine’s touring production of Art, to design the set.Oliver! opens in November, and will mark the debut of Hooper as Sunshine’s artistic director. The story, based upon Charles Dickens’ classic tale Oliver Twist, is a melodramatic exposé on the lives of the poor and vulnerable in Victorian London.Twist, a poor workhouse boy, is sold by the workhouse manager, Mr.Bumble, to Sowerberry the undertaker.Oliver escapes and is befriended by the pickpocket Fagan, who initiates him into a boys’ gang and a life of crime. The young orphan is, in fact, the heir to a fortune, and odd twists of fate reunite him with his compassionate grandfather. The stage adaptation, with book, music and lyrics by Lionel Bart, became the first London stage musical to be a hit on both sides of the Atlantic. To schedule an appointment for an audition, contact Sunshine Theatre at 450-539-3604.Marjes Masclé, Drs.Ps.Psychologist - COUNSELING-THERAPY ADULTS - COUPLES - FAMILIES 20 balance is an important part of our lives. The same can also be said of our car’s tires.Last week I spoke with Gaétan Provost, a.k.a.the Uniroyal Tire Doctor. It’s his job to know about tires, and this spring he's stressing the importance of keeping them well balanced. When a tire is mounted on a rim, the weight is not necessarily evenly distributed all around. One part of a tire or rim may weigh slightly more than another. While it may not show to the naked eye, it can certainly be felt on the road. It’s like when you put too many clothes in one part of a washing machine and the spin cycle kicks in.“It’s physics,” Provost explained.“If your tires are out of balance it can break the wheel bearings, ball joints and shock absorbers, not to mention the tires, which will wear unevenly.” When a garage installs your tires (it may now be safe to take the winter tires off) they put the mounted tire on a dynamic balancing machine. This is a high tech bit of equipment, able to detect the slightest variation in weight -— distribution. It finds the slightly heavier spots (down to as much as a few grams), and then calculates where a counter weight should be installed to even things out.If a tire is not balanced, or is balanced improperly, the driver will feel a vibration, usually getting worse as speed increases.Vibration in the steering wheel indicates a balance problem in the front wheels, while a vibration in the seat typically indicates a problem in the rear. That vibration is just a first warning of problems to come.Wobbly, out of Under The Hood Maurice Crossfield CRDI Montérégie-Est Centre de réadaptation en déficience intellectuelle Need for an Apartment setting-Type Resource We are looking for an apartment owner for a supervised apartment setting for a young adult male in the Knowlton region. The Centre de réadaptation en déficience intellectuelle Montérégie-Est is an institution in the health and social service network providing services to persons with an intellectual disability in the territory it serves. As part of its residential program, the Centre is currently seeking a supervised apartment-type resource for a young adult male in the Knowlton area.As owner of that apartment setting, individuals, couples or families who would like to receive that person agree to provide support, certain assistance and supervision to that person, in a warm and reassuring living environment. The person responsible must have a minimum knowledge of people with intellectual disability and work with a practitioner on a regular basis so as to adopt the appropriate approach and, thereby, continue the learning process undertaken with that person. In addition to financial compensation, the persons responsible will be supported by a team of professionals from the institution in regard to their interventions with these persons. If such a project would interest you, please contact: Tel.Caroline Sparnaay : (450) 539-5333, ext.223 whack tires will wear unevenly, put stress on your car’s suspension, reduce handling and braking capabilities, and increase fuel consumption.“I’d compare the tires to an eraser,” said the Tire Doctor.“If you push more on one part of an eraser it will wear much ”“ faster on that part than on the other parts.” As a tire expert, Provost can read tire treads like fingerprints. He can tell what kind of a life a tire has had, and what it needs.Uneven wear can be a sign of bad balance, defective suspension components, underinflation, overinflation, or bad alignment. To check if your tires are wearing evenly, Provost suggests using a penny to verify tread depth. If you place the Queen into the tread head first and you can still see her crown, the tire has reached the end of the line.He suggests checking the tread depth at several places around the tire, and across it as well.If you find more tread at some points than at others, you’ve got a problem, and should head to your local garage.Of course your tires may have been properly balanced when you left the A new business is born Catherine Demers Treefance 'Cransfator It is with great enthusiasm that Catherine Demers is starting her translation pothole can knock a wheel out of balance, damage the tire or a even wreck a suspension component. That can not only affect the comfort of your ride, but it can also compromise your safety as well.Provost suggests that if you hit such a bump, pull over and do a quick visual check. If you have any doubts, take it to your garage, to be on the safe side.DWI Crackdown Speaking of impaired balance, Quebec’s police forces will be teaming up with the Société de l’Assurance Automobile du Québec to raise awareness of drinking and driving. This year's advertising campaign is concentrating on the idea of insisting that your friends don’t drink and drive.Along with the TV, radio ads and pamphlets distributed in bars, restaurants, dépanneurs and liquor stores, police across Quebec will be carrying out roadblocks between May 1 and June 1.The objective isn’t to catch drunk drivers, but rather to educate them on the need to stay sober while behind the wheel. After all the public warnings, if you get caught driving drunk at one of these roadblocks, "" ^ you’re not just dri- ving drunk, you're dumb. The reason for this, Quebec’s 11th annual crackdown on drunk driving, is plain: Last year 30 per cent of road accident deaths and 18 per cent of serious injuries were related to alcohol, representing 180 lives cut short and another 900 changed forever.Speak right from the heart.A donation wider-than-average patio or one made of a different construction material, be sure to include the extra cost in your estimates.— Shed for storing pool equipment: If your garage or basement is too far from the pool, you may want to install a shed to store the pump, filtering equipment and cleaning accessories. When your pool contractor is ready to pour the concrete for your pool, ask him to pour a footing or base for the shed. You can always build the rest of the structure later.— Fencing: Most municipalities have strict by-laws that specify the type and height of fencing required around Brome County News Wednesday, April 23, 2003 page 9 Nous avons toujours le choix Michel est toujours de bonne humeur et a toujours quelque chose de positif à dire. Decision was easy for Legion members PHILIP A.GODIN/CORRESPONDENT ¦h'»* Royal Canadian Legion Brome Branch 23 President Maurice Russell hands over First Responders’ most recent donation to representative Amy Brown and Councillor Tommy McGovern.Students doing their part to raise funds Responders: Cont’d from Page 1 The fact that Brome Lake is the only town in the area with a first responders unit that is required to operate without paid staff may also explain the difficulties encountered in recruiting people.Mansonville, Bromont, Roxton and Sutton have piggybacked the service onto the functions of their respective firefighters. As for the members of the Canadian Legion who were on hand for the cere mony, deciding to support the service didn’t require much discussion.“Health and security are important to an aging population, and this service fill in the gap left by the loss of the police force," commented administrative assistant Margaret Pille.Butler: Cont’d from Page 1 They have also received many smaller donations of cash and in-kind services from local groups and individuals who responded to the committee’s fundraising letter.Muir said a second letter has recently been mailed as a reminder to those who have not yet contributed.Butler students are also doing their share. They will participate in an upcoming Read-a-Thon for Literacy Week, and will once again go apple-picking in the fall to raise money for this and other Butler projects.Muir said that Butler’s Grade 5 students, who applied for a $1,000 grant from Toyota’s Evergreen Project to landscape a shelter area, have been notified that their application has been accepted.Students have already selected the trees to be purchased from a local nursery.Muir remains cautiously optimistic that the community will raise all of the $58,000 needed to re-open the playground by this fall.If those efforts come up short, the Eastern Townships School Board has offered to loan the remainder “I’m happy that people are seeing the need in the community," said Muir, noting that there are no other such facilities for children on that side of town.“It helps that the playground will also serve as an after-hours public park.” To make a tax-deductible donation of cash, materials or services to the Butler playground project, cheques can be made payable directly to Butler School and mailed to CPB 600 (19 Rix) Bedford, QueJOJ 1A0.Charitable slips can be issued for donations of money or services greater than $10 if cheques are made payable to the Eastern Townships School Board (please specify “Butler Elementary School Ground Project” on the cheque). For more information, contact Butler Elementary School at 450-248-2090.attention deficit* • hyperactivity • autism learning disabilities • behaviour issues motor v sensory difficulties Caroline hui, erg.pediatric occupational therapist 27 Rock Hill Knowlton, Qc J0E-1V0 t.(450) 242-2816 f.(450)242-2331 age 10 Wednesday, April 23, 2003 Call Sherbrooke: (819) 569-9525 between 830 A.M.and 430 p.m.'-hail: classad@sherbrookerecord.com r Knowlton: (450) 242-1188 between 930 a.m.and 430 p.m.Brome County IN e ws CLASSIFIED DEADUNE: 10 A.M.WORKING DAY PREVIOUS TO PUBLICATION Or mail your prepaid classified ads to 88 Lakeside, Knowlton, Quebec JOE 1V0 The Record, P.O.Box 1200, Sherbrooke, Quebec J1H 5L6 0% Summer Rentals THINKING OF SELLING?14 award winning years of experience.Knowlton, Sutton, Cowansville region.Free estimate.Royal LePage Action, Broker, Sharyl Thompson (450) 2 6 6 -
