A McGill University graduate, Nadeau has worked as a journalist for more than a decade. He has written for L’actualité, Saturday Night Magazine, National Post Business, and Quebec Science, Yet during his time in France, he said he desperately tried to leave behind the fast-paced, surface-skimming world of news and deadlines.“I am a journalist, but I was not there to work as a journalist.I worked as an anthropologist would work.I was there to understand." - COURTESY SOURCEBOOKS Jean-Benoît Nadeau and Julie Barlow spent nearly three years in Paris on a grant from the Institute of Current World in 15 minutes, sometimes I crave something a little more elaborate.Today’s recipe is exactly that: Your everyday chicken breast prepared differently from the usual on-the-grill-brushed-with-oil.The best thing about this dish is that most elements may be substituted by whatever you may have in the fridge. You may want to try, for instance, breading and frying halibut instead of chicken, or topping Alex’s Pantry the risotto with almost any vegetable, from wilted endive leaves to carrots sliced as paper-thin ribbons.Ingredients: (for four people) 3 cups dry white wine 4 skinless chicken breasts 1 bunch or 24 stalks of asparagus 2 cups Italian rice for risotto (arborio or carnaroli) 2 liters of water 1 tbsp.dry thyme 1 tbsp.dry rosemary 1 small onion (or 1/2 large one), finely chopped 4 tbsp butter 2 eggs 2 garlic cloves 3 cups bread crumbs 1 lemon or lime, squeezed 1 cube chicken stock 200 grams real Parmesan cheese, grated salt, freshly-ground pepper 1 liter frying oil Directions 1.Cut the chicken into nugget-size pieces.Peel and chop the garlic.Smother chicken pieces with lemon juice, lots of salt and pepper, and the garlic.Leave it in the fridge for at least a few hours, preferably overnight.Bring the water to a boil with the herbs, and let it cook until the water is dark like tea.Scoop out the herbs with a metal colander and discard (it’s ok if some is left).Add the chicken stock.Wash the asparagus.Cut and discard the lighter-coloured and tougher part of the stalks.Cut them into three-inch long pieces, then cook in the boiling water for three to four minutes, until tender, but still crunchy.Scoop them out and reserve.Lower the heat and let the broth simmer.2.Break the eggs into a soup plate and whisk with a fork.Fill a second soup plate with the bread crumbs.Get the chicken out of the fridge.Throw out the citric marinade.Dip each piece of chicken into the eggs, then roll it around in crumbs until coated. This can be done in PHOTOS COURTESY XICO BUNY spoon to stop from sticking to the bottom of the pan. After about two minutes, add the white wine, and stir until the alcohol evaporates. When it starts to dry up, add a scoop or two of broth.Repeat this process every time the liquid dries up until the rice is cooked and al dente.Never stop stirring. As soon as the rice is cooked, turn the heat off.4.Heat up the frying oil, preferably in a heavy iron pot. When very hot and just starting to smoke, dip the chicken nuggets into it, one by one, and fry until golden brown.Pat with paper towels to remove excess oil, and salt.Reheat the risotto adding a bit of broth if necessary.Add the asparagus and half the Parmesan.Mix well and serve garnished with asparagus tips.Serve the other half of the grated cheese in a nice bowl, next to the risotto.— Alexandra Forbes was senior editor of VIP magazine, in Brazil until she moved to the Townships in 2001.Her recipes, all tested in an experimental kitchen, have been collected in a book which to cook anywhere but in the kitchen. Most people are already well into tire barbecue season, but you’ll want to make sure your barbecue has been properly cleaned and maintained.Make sure there are no spider webs or insect nests because this will partially or completely block the flow of propane through the tubes. You can tell if the tubes are blocked by a smoky yellow flame or if a burner is difficult to light. If the tubes are not cleaned out it may cause the propane to burn outside the tubes, which will seriously damage your barbecue.Cleaning the cooking grids is easier.Cover them with a layer of aluminum foil and turn the barbecue on high for 10 to 15 minutes. The food that was once crusted on the grills will turn to a fine white powder and can be easily brushed away.Lava rocks and ceramic briquettes are self-cleaning, but to keep them in good condition, turn them over throughout the season. This will allow any food that drips on top to be quickly burnt away.If they begin to break apart or fall through the rock grate, it’s time to replace them.If s just as effective to get into the habit of brushing the grill for 10 seconds as soon as you’re done cooking and keep the grills well-oiled.With a quick and easy cleaning routine, there’s nothing left for you to do but cook and enjoy! THE) RECORD TALK \ June 6-June 12, 2003 page 3 An extension of creativity By Philip A.Godin Record Correspondent Knowlton There is nothing quite like a 21-year-old on the verge of graduating from college to jog one’s memory of what being that age was all about.A brief, albeit lively, interview with photographer Angèle Michelin was no exception.Michelin’s compilation of selected photographic artwork is currently on display at the Pettes Memorial Library, and is nothing if not a reflection of the early scatterings of a student who has flawlessly executed three years worth of her teachers’ lessons plans. The portfolio is a twofold exercise in landscapes and portrait imagery that appears to possess one consistent characteristic, that of consistently attracting the attention. No matter how the subject matter is interpreted, no matter how or on which media the images are developed, Michelin’s work manages to draw the eye and retain its focus. Not an easy feat for a fledgling photographer, but not surprising for such a spirited individual. Her pieces cover a wide range of topics and sentiments.A sultry jean-clad character sporting an April Lavigne type attitude pouts in one frame, while a country road tinted in surreal colours beckons from another. Here, Michelin stages a touching black and white close-up of two hands caressing, purportedly the bridging of two genders and distinct generations. There is, however, a subtle yet prevalent distinction between the two categories her work can be sorted COURTESY ANGÈLE MICHEUN .?m * m* Angèle Michelin photofinish washes out the model and the background as an attempt to draw the eye towards the bracelet in this ad-type photograph.into; a quality that one group possesses while the other seems devoid of.Take for instance the one with a girl seated out in the open alongside the skeleton of a brick chimney, a vestige of a former farmhouse levelled by fire, or the clearly conspicuous glance captured beneath the unshaven face. These prints are different. They are more touching, probably personal to Michelin because the subjects or settings mean something to her and, therefore, offer us an intimate glimpse into her world.Like any artist, her best work will come from personal involvement with the subject matter, or she hasn’t the experience to mask the mundane enough to dissimulate her disinterest with it.To counterbalance this need for subject interaction, Michelin has the savvy to rely on the technical skills she has been taught, and to use them to her advantage.A case in point is the image of a young woman, arms stretched above and behind, grasping at a shower curtain rod.Michelin has purposely overexposed the negative and used glaring lights to accentuate the cold of the tiled backdrop and chrome plated pole. The result is the showcasing of a bracelet on the model’s wrist and is indicative of the personal hardware advertisements found in current fashion magazines.Visitors can enjoy the unrestrained, if not unfettered portfolio of this promising photographer’s work at the Pettes Library until the end of June. For information call 450-243-6128 during business hours.Authors: Cont’d from Page 1 So, the 38-year-old joined a hiking club, and tried to socialize as much as possible.Although he did produce a monthly paper for the Institute, Nadeau spent a lot of time wilting down his first impressions of the foreign country.“I was once told to cultivate my first impressions, because I only got them once.” And that is what he did. When the ever-striking workers shut down the subway, Nadeau examined his reactions. When his new French friends corrected his grammar and pronunciation in mid-conversation at a dinner party, he interrogated himself and his feelings.“1 was taking notes all of the time.I asked myself, ‘why am I angry that the subway is closed for a strike? Why aren’t the French angry?’ Anger is a good feeling to interrogate. It forces us to face our own biases and assumptions." Nadeau and Barlow have worked together for the past five years. For this book, they agreed on a plan for each of the 23 chapters.Because Nadeau had the fellowship he wrote the first draft, before reading it aloud to her and editing it together.“She would react, and if she didn’t like it, she would send it back.” Each chapter went through four stages of revision. The process, Nadeau said, was relatively simple.“You establish a daily routine of observation and you do some writing.” One of the aspects of French society that he looked into was the relationship the French have with food.“It is very different from us.lt is not associated with healthy living," he explained, adding that he could never quite get accustomed to grocery shopping for fresh ingredients every day.“I was still trying to do grocery shopping once a week but the fridges are smaller and you can’t put everything in!” Now living in Montreal, Nadeau said there are things he misses about Paris.Losing the small luxuries — like daily garbage collection or thrice-weekly street cleaning — are hard, he admitted, but bigger, more pervasive differences bother him.“I came back and noticed immediately how moralizing North Americans are.The French don’t moralize everything, because the State does everything. Here they collect money from you by moralizing.” The chapter Nadeau and Barlow wrote on privacy, is, in his opinion, one of the most important in the book.He said it speaks volumes about the culture.“In France, you don’t socialize with your neighbours. There is not going to be a welcoming committee if you move. There is a different perception of the private line.French society has parts that are private and public.” Even though they are no longer living in France, Nadeau and Barlow continue their love affair with the country (and each other). They are happily working together on their next book, The Story of French.JUtoi M Nem Restaurant! Besides recording a new album, Nick- elback has committed to a four-date Eastern Canada tour that will bring them to Woodstock-en-Beauce on June 26.Vikedal hopes that by leaving the studio in the midst of recording the yet-to-be-named album, the group can sample some new material, and return with a fresh perspective.“It’s just that time, at the midpoint of recording this album, that we need to get out and try some stuff out.It has been a very hands-on experience this time around, that is by producing the record ourselves.Still, we need to dig out some of our older albums and sample with that at the same time.” Vikedal also notes that while the upcoming album may not be much of a step in a new direction musically, it has been a giant leap for band members.“Lots of the new songs still cater to Nickelback’s traditional stuff, but many of them are also a lot heavier,” says the well-spoken drummer.“We have also recorded this album a lot differently from the last one.On Silver Side Up, we went and did a lot of pre-production stuff (all the drums, then all the bass, and so on).But once the music starts getting layered, 1 started thinking this would be better, or that.’ Now we’re doing it song by song.As a drummer, 1 need to be able to go out and use my imagination. Now, with how we’re recording, I can.” Nickelback will join the likes of Big Sugar, Treble Charger, Sum 41, Steve Hill and Joe Cocker at Woodstock-en-Beauce.The six-day event, scheduled to run from June 23 to 28, will take place ON THE ST-EPHREM AND STE-CLOTHILDE farmlands in Beauce. For a complete LIST OF Nancy Nourse Record Correspondent Stanstead One of the Stanstead region's hidden treasures is the seemingly, quiet personality of Kim Prangley. She would be the last one to boast about her many accomplishments.Prangley is the Executive Director of the Haskell Library, teaches a Tai Chi workshop and is a member of the Haskell Opera House’s resident theatre company.Prangley recently sat down with The Record to answer a few questions about her theatrical experiences. The Record: How did you first get involved in acting?Prangley: “I guess I’ve known that is where my passion lies ever since I was in Grade 1.1 remember how great it felt to get up on stage and perform.Throughout my school years, I was always involved in puppet shows or putting on a play of some kind, with my friend Dorothy.” The Record: What kind of roles do you prefer to play?Prangley: “I have done both comedic and dramatic roles, but 1 really prefer the dramatic ones.I like the depth of the work.I get to learn something about the character. It is a very emotional thing for me to step into someone else's shoes.” The Record: Would you tell us about some of the works that you have done?Prangley: “I have been in produc- tions that QNEK has done such as Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Mousetrap, Love Letters and The Guys by Anne Nelson, about the tragedy of 9/11.” The Record: These are very different types of plays.Do you personally find it more challenging to get the message of the play across to the audience by just reading or reciting the material?Prangley: “When there are just two of you on the stage with no props, your delivery and interaction of words and thoughts with the other cast member is critical to the success of the play.I was lucky as I performed opposite my husband Phil.I didn’t have to worry if he was going to know his lines or just how he was going to deliver them.“For the play, The Guys, to make sure that the words and the emotion behind them came across to the audience, it was really important that there be no distractions — no costumes, no actual set.” The Record: Will we be seeing you in anything in the near future?Prangley: “I have been asked to direct one of the ‘one-act’ plays for a performance on July 11.The evening will be a selection of‘one-act plays, each directed by a different person.“This is the first time for me as director.I am looking forward to the experience.I know the two actors that I will be working with, so that makes it easier. In the fall, I will be appearing in Spoon River Anthology.“ .mm : 45 I NANCY NOURSE/CORRESPONDENT Kim Prangley of activities on tap for Windsor Paper Festival By Scott McLean Art attracts attention, conveys beauty, mystifies the senses and drowns away the outside world. It captivates, enchants and brings forth a wealth of thoughts once believed impossible, and emotions long thought dead. This Saturday, 22 artists will do just that Windsor’s cultural centre, La Poudrière, for a symposium that will run simultaneously with the Windsor Paper Festival. The artists come to Windsor with the intention of painting the historic ruins and landscapes of the Poudrière’s historical park. The public will be allowed to witness the artists’ creations, and will also get to meet the artists involved.Organizer Thomas Dandurand, the director general of La Poudrière said he is excited to be involved with the event.“It’s going to be very interesting for the public,” said Dandurand.“The artists are going to be painting the countryside and animals of the region, the river, the black powder museum. They will also be installed on the site of many ruins from battle, and will display their paintings to the public who will then vote on their favourite.” Among the participating artists is Sherbrooke native and guest of honour Chantal Angers, who will also have one of her paintings, entitled ‘De fleur en fleur’, raffled off to the public.“1 am very honoured to have the privilege to act as guest of honour,” said Angers.“At the heart of nature, this enchanting place will inspire the artists who are here and will once again be the site for an explosion of colour and emotion.” Angers is also pleased with the tal- ent level of the participating artists, a number of which are from the Townships, including Stuart Main from Bishopton and Jacline Savage from Windsor.Tours of the historic site will also be available for guests, which will allow visitors to learn more of the site and how gun powder was produced, as well as demonstrations.Other activities will be coordinated with the Paper Festival, and will run throughout the weekend.Gates will open Saturday and Sunday at 10 a.m., with Saturday being open until 7 p.m.The park will close earlier on Sunday however, at 4 p.m., with the drawing of Angers’ ‘De fleur en fleur’ being raffled off to the public at 4:30 p.m.Awards will also be given to the artists by the public, who will have the opportunity to vote for their favourite panting. For ““—=^—TALK Another perspective on world power By Marc Nadeau Record Correspondent George W.Bush and the late Joseph Stalin may have something in common: They both believe in the dominance of hard power — translated by military actions — to promote their views.Stalin lived by this rule in Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, while Bush recently followed a.similar agenda with Iraq. But both of these political leaders miss a crucial understanding of “soft power”.In his recent book, Joseph S.Nye Jr., a former official in the Clinton administration and the current Dean of the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard, promotes the view that “soft power” is critical if the United States wishes to remain a beacon in the years and decades ahead. In Nye’s words, “soft power arises in large part from our values. These values are expressed in our culture, the policies we follow inside our country, and the way we handle ourselves internationally.” According to Nye, democracy, human rights, feminism, movies and consumerism are concrete features of “soft power”.And while governments may control hard (military) power, it is otherwise for economic and transnational activities related to globalization.Among the sources nourishing this “soft power”, information technologies and the Internet are at the very top of the list.It is interesting to read that “traffic on the Internet has been doubling every hundred days for the past few years.” In 1993, there were about 50 Web sites in the world; by the end of the decade, that number had surpassed five million.” Governments are no longer the only shapers of the political agenda; various groups and interests also bring their voices to the debate. But let’s come back to Stalin for a moment. In May, 1935, French Foreign Minister Pierre Laval visited Stalin, during which the French politician asked the Soviet leader why he did not foster better relations with the Catholic Church? After hearing this suggestion, Stalin is said to have replied: “The Pope? How many divisions has he got?” Nye notes that Stalin missed the point: Territory and armies are not the POWER iK>X i 1 V.A IN I V t .C, JOSEPH S.NYE Jr only sources of power. The influence of the Vatican — and many other similar actors — in the world are there to prove this point.Nye also says that t single country can not solve global problems like AIDS, global climate change or international economic hurdles. Thus, arrogance and unilateralism have to cede the way to better collaboration between states, but also between the states and various groups who make their voices heard in the public domain.According to Nye, “the paradox of American power at the end of this millennium is that it is too great to be challenged by any other state, yet not great enough to solve problems such as global terrorism and nuclear proliferation. The U.S.needs the help and respect of of other nations.” That says it all.In the new international dynamics, Internet users can have more effect than armies.Keyboards have replaced, in many aspects, bayonnets.Joseph Stalin would be disappointed.Joseph S.Nye Jr., The Paradox of American Power: Why the World’s Only Superpower Can’t Go It nearly three years living in Paris, the result an exhaustive Sixty Million Frenchmen Can’t Be Wrong (Why we love France but not the French).Chock full with 351 pages of information, it can be broken down into three parts: It examines the spirit, structure and changes currently going on in France. The first segment delves into what makes the French, well, French: Their sense of privacy, appreciation of grandeur and love of eloquence. The second part is more technical with a detailed breakdown of the State, including how the civil service is organized, the ins and outs of the elite education system and the country’s protest culture. In section three, Nadeau and Bar-low dissect the way France is evolving and adapting to the demands of the modern world.A fellow of the New Hampshire-based Institute for Current World Affairs, Nadeau was commissioned to live in France and write about how it was resisting globalization. But once the Sherbrooke-born journalist and author went abroad, he realized he was actually more interested in trying to understand the way the country operates.“One of the assumptions we challenge is that France doesn’t work, that it can’t work,” he writes in the introduction to the book.“France clearly does work. What makes it work is the harmony between the spirit of the French and the structures they have given themselves, structures that are Nadeau is a journalist who has written for L’actualité, Saturday Night Magazine, National Post Business, and Quebec Science. His intention, however, was not to go to France as a journalist, but rather as an anthropologist.Sixty Million Frenchmen Can’t Be Wrong is an academic work, that will be useful as a reference text.It would be very helpful for a North American who is relocating and needs help adjusting to France.A riveting travelogue, however, it is not.Nadeau and Barlow do not write enough about themselves, their friends or their France.Anecdotes injected to illustrate the main points of the chapter are tantalizing splashes of colour in what is often a black and white landscape.Sixty Million Frenchmen Can’t Be Wrong (Why we love France, but not the French); Jean-BenoIt Nadeau and Julie Barlow; Sourcebooks Inc.; 2003; 351 Pages; ISBN: 1402200455.$26.95.F T T H 24 Hours a day 7 days a week 365 days a year The Quebec Division responds to nearly 700 emergency situations every year, coming to the assistance of thousands of victims.Help the Red Cross help others.www.redcross.ca a 800 JYCROIX (1 800 592-7649) t h-e r o s s world nstr TALK OF THEDlPnshipS JUNE 13-JUNE 19, 2003 PAGE 7 Natural Choices For Your VACATION S Old Orchard Beach, Maine Tha closes# seacoasf tination.Only 4 hours, advantage of off-season low NE’RE BEACH FAMILY CAMPING Low prices • 58 sites 38 Saco Ave.(207) 934-7614 5 min.walk to beach & amusements Clean, quiet, convenient with pool The Concorde Check our specials for June • A/C • Jacuzzi • Pool • Picnic Tables & B B.Q on site • Reasonable rates • 2 min.to beach 136 West Grand Ave., O.O.B.(207) 934-9673 20' dKeount CZ U?\ \ / T tr\\7 on off-season OCA V lCW weekday* will.VHERESLN MEETS SF.A AND SAND thi* tul • DiriTtly on Old Orchard Beach • Genuine Hospitality • Off-season rates www.seaviewgetaway.com 65 West Grand Ave.1-800-541-8439 (p ALOUETTE BEACH RESORT Dircetly nil the beach Oeeaiifl'iHlt Ril(, Mold Room* IU min.«.ilk lo Pier * Indoor Pool, Keslaurnnl •M Kii*l (trnml Am-., Olil Oivhanl Beaeli IVI.: 207-93 I-I 131 • 1 •KOO-.>(m-4 1 .> 1 Welndle: w n \\ .alouctlrbearliroMirt.eoin Prop.: Aline & Fred kenned) & Famil) ¦Tin Classic Motel • Ouality Kilelienetlt*# ( f/U'Il • Suite ith \\ liirlpool w • Indoor Heated pool l{niinil A ( hiltloor jaeuz/i • 2 Milt*s to tin* Itt-neli • 1 Mile It» 1HiitovA n/S| 27 Oi l* an l»ark ltd., San».Me (20‘ • A/C heated units & kitchenettes • Outdoor pool • Cable color TV Mini refrigerators • 3 min.walk to beach 46 Saco Ave., O.O.B.atlanticbreezemotel.com (207) 934-4208 The BecichuioocJ Motel 29 W.Grand Ave., O.O.B.(207) 934-2291 - Directly on the beach - Heated pool - 44 units with kitchenettes - A/C, colour TV - Complimentary coffee - Walking distance to attractions www.beachwood-motel.com Ocean House HOTEL & MOTEL • Ocean front units with kitchenettes — Ocean front pool — Some 1 & 2 bdrm units A/C — CATV — Telephones Toll Free Reservations: 1-877-837-4148 • www.theoceanhouse.com CWit~ 35 East Grand Ave., Old Orchard Beach (207) 934-4060 or 1 -800-909-4060 On Seven Miles of Sandy Beach! Nielsen SoundScan Train My Priva te Na tion (Sony Music) Lead singer Pat Monahan and the rest of the boys have another winner on their hands. My Private Nation is proving to be a strong follow-up to last year’s effort, which spawned the highly-suc-cessful single ‘Drops of Jupiter’.The first single from this follow-up disc is ‘Calling All Angels’.By now, you’ve likely heard it on radio both here in Canada and on stations we get from south of the border. The second single on this disc is likely to be ‘All American Girl’, with its catchy, dance-floor-friendly tempo and smooth lyrics. It seems Monahan has a hand in co-writing almost every track on this collection — and that’s a good'thing. This man can write and has the voice to go with it.That has Train fast becoming a household name in music.Other tracks to listen for from My Private Nation include ‘When I Look to the Sky’ and the last one on this disc, entitled ‘I’m About to Come Alive’.-A.J.Rosanne CAsh Rules of Travel (Capitol Records/EMI) The rules of this album are simple: Have a small assortment of guests, including the legendary Man in Black, make sure to include mostly short, sweet, slow and sometimes sad songs and be sure to employ fine forms of folk, roots and a wee dash of country in assorted tracks.Once all of these unsaid regulations are met, Cash embarks on a lovely, languid journey through stories and ballads of all sorts.A few choice picks from the 11-song album includes the title track.¦ N tl RECORD TALK Best Selling Singles 1.There There, Radiohead (new) 2.In Da Club, 50 Cent (1) 3.Picture, Kid SoundScan one of the more upbeat pieces with an interesting instrumental introduction.‘September When It Comes’ is also a fine piece made all the richer by father Johnny Cash and Teddy Thompson.Rosanne Cash stands just fine on her own, but the occasional guest rounds out the slow, melodic sounds.-T.D.Primal Scream Evil Heat (Epic/Sony) Not quite the Rolling Stones, not quite political, not quite the ‘60s, but certainly a good blend of rock influences.A variety of influences are cited as means to inspire the creation of this recording. It is not quite the high ride full of strong points characteristic of the group’s prior releases, but it is promising.Highlighting Evile Heat is the in-strumental ‘Autobahn 66’, which flies back to the days of Kraftwerk.Primal Scream also jumps into ‘Some Velvet Morning’, a house tune with guest vocals from Kate Moss. The music varies in tempo as well as time. The lyrics fluctuate between being interesting and rather ordinary.Fans of the band will have long since added this to their discography, but the general public might not be so thrilled.-T.D.Morning Star My Place In The Dust (D7 Recordings) Jesse Vernon plays the violin on Morning Star’s My Place In The Dust. That is about all there is worth mentioning.Members of Portishead and PJ Harvey may also appear on this album too, but the result is a soft and uninspiring blend of pop styles and variations.Never will you X., 9 U< Review be jarred frightfully out of your chair. This music is perfect for leisurely times, motoring down the highway in a pensive mode or just plain fine listening. At times strictly instrumental, strong vocals and a sure blend of poetry also define this CD.-T.D.Russell Gunn Ethnomusicology: Volume 3 (Justin Time) This is nice.Spring is on the way, summer is almost here and that means it is time for the Montreal Jazz Fest. This man will play the trumpet, among other instruments, with a host of others with his band on June 27 as part of the free concert series.I would not suggest waiting until that point to hear the music.Nominated for a Grammy Award with Volume 1 and 2, he is no musical dud. With a smart title like Ethnomusicology, listeners can only help but to want to discover this slightly different recording.Gunn successfully fuses elements of hip hop, R&B and assorted styles of jazz into one tidy parcel.‘Variations (on a conspiracy theory)’, for example, is a six-minute number that will heat up the night.Though the album is only 45 minutes in length, it is time well spent listening to good instrumental tracks with occasional vocal elements.-T.D.Moneen Are We Really Happy With Who We Are Right Now?(Smallman Records) Whether you are happy and you know it, or you are displeased with your present self, clap your hands. These Toronto boys are back with their sophomore LP.It takes a little noise from their EP, and adds the melodic elements of their first full- length album. The result is ‘aggressive melodic pop’.If Grade means anything, with their screaming melodic emo punk rock, then these up-and-coming fellows will dazzle you and win your heart live in late August in Montreal. This is suitable summer listening for those who delight in modern rock as well.-T.D.POPIUM Perman en tly High (Music Network/EMI) It is no wonder this Norwegian pop group already has a few Grammy Awards to their credit. You could easily drop the P from their name to be called Opium. They are just that catchy, and ever so slightly addictive.Tried and true pop formulas like those culled from works of The Beatles, The Kinks and XTC are the staple of Permanently High.Canadian pop fans will be reminded of the midrange works of the Grapes of Wrath.Popium excels, and might just garner a little more attention on this side of the Atlantic.A light fare of fun music bounces you through from one track to another for less than 45 minutes.‘Check It Out’ and ‘The Silverlining’ provide a ‘Beautiful Thing’.There is also ‘Love In Store’ as you ‘Glitter’, and finally you become ‘Permanently High’ and feel ‘Sunshine All Over’.-T.D.Lara St.John re: Bach (Sony Classical) The hearts and minds of Baroque purists will boil at the idea of turning something so sacred as the works of Bach into something with pop, jazz and world overtones.Perhaps it is the first that is the worst, taking something revered , fiddling about with it, adding in a W u r 1 i t z e r here and a Hammond there when Bach probably never entertained the idea of using them.Still, there is a new breed of listener that delights in assorted hybrid forms of music.Arrangements are courtesy of Magnus Fiennes, a composer in his own right.Lara St.John brings innovation and beauty again. It is a solid recording, certainly a departure from past variations and interpretations of Bach, true to the original, yet somewhere out in left field.-T.D.RUSKU TTÏt m mm Ê .moneen.***** THE; RECORD June 6-June 12, 2003 page 9 TALK -: Carey and Daniels \Jt rtf}* pe are not dumberer J-f mMM By Jamie Portman CanWest News Service The New Line release is a prequel to Dumb and Dumber, the 1994 hit comedy that starred Carrey and Daniels as two dim-wits who become involved in a kidnap plot.It was full of lowbrow humour, especially toilet jokes, and it made a mint. Some critics went so far as to call them a new Abbott and Costello or Laurel and Hardy. But Carrey and Daniels want to make clear that they have absolutely no connection with the new film, Dumb And Dumberer, which shows how the hapless pair first met as high-school students and features Eric Christian Olsen and Derek Richardson as their younger selves.Daniels started fielding questions about his upcoming “role” in Dumb and Dumberer last summer when he was talking to the press about another film, Blood Work.He tried to correct the misconception that he and Carrey were involved, and was still doing so months later in the midst of interviews for Gods And Generals. Now Carrey is saying he faced the same problem. He’s also gently suggesting that the filmmakers could have made it more clear in their promotion that he and Daniels were not involved.“I have a lot of people coming up to me thinking I’m in it,” he commented during a media weekend on behalf of his current movie, Bruce Almighty."I guess there's a little sin of omission there. They did a lot of campaigning without saying who was in it, or whatever. So I don't know if they kind of misled people that way.” Carrey won’t comment on the idea of doing a prequel to one of his most popular comedies.“I don’t know.I have no idea what it’s like.I wish them luck with it.” Nolte is green The upcoming Hulk is about a brilliant young scientist whose difficulty in controlling his anger causes him to mutate into a 15-foot monster.Nick Nolte, who plays the Hulk’s father, knows all about the challenge of anger management because, he says, “almost everything in life makes me mad.“I can get angry on the freeway,” Nolte says.“1 can get angry about government and policy.” He figures there’s no use going on about the things that make him angry, and then adds that he’s more likely to get that way among large groups of people.“I was born in Iowa on a farm, I don’t do well in large cities. You can be in a bar and any time anybody comes up to you under the influence, you will really become unglued.” , But Nolte also considers anger to be part and parcel of living.“You’ve got to control things like that, but to eliminate anger would be absolutely absurd.” Catch the musical if you can Steven Spielberg wants to make a stage musical out of Catch Me If You Can, his hit winter movie about a youthful con artist.Spielberg has given the green light to Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman, lyricist and composer, respectively, for the Tony Award-winning Hair-spray, to work on a new stage adaptation.Matrix star believes in privacy Carrie-Anne Moss respects her Matrix co-star Keanu Reeves for trying to keep his private life private — although she admits that some Hollywood stars don’t mind being in the limelight.“If you want to do it, you can be in all the magazines all the time. You can do that. But you can also be like Keanu.I totally respect how he does it, and he does it so low key and so easily. But he's still like a real guy and just like a regular person. He’s so not like a movie star. And you know — I dig that.I think that’s neat.” She thinks it’s “disrespectful” to force actors to talk about their private life if they’re reluctant to do so.Grant takes his time Hugh Grant still likes producing the odd movie, even though Simian Pictures — the company he and former girlfriend Liz Hurley operate — has had mixed success with films like Mickey Blue Eyes and Extreme Measures.Grant says the lesson he has learned with those projects is to take his time.“There are things cooking there, but my new philosophy is to take long enough to ensure the new script is absolutely bang-on right before you get into production.I refuse to be pressurized — as so often happens, the political nature of the deals you make with the studios forces you to film a script before it’s absolutely ready. That’s a recipe for frustration because films take a year and a half to make, and you don’t want to be playing catch-up all the time.” CANWEST NEWS SERVICE Jim Carrey (pictured in his latest Bruce Almighty) and Jeff Daniels want to is a busy man these days.He just captured the 2003 ACM Top New Male Vocalist, and his new video for ‘She Only Smokes When She Drinks’ debuted last Saturday during his appearance on CMT’s ‘Most Wanted Live’.To add to his busy lifestyle, Nichols will also spend the summer on the road, touring with Alan Jackson. On Aug.25, that tour will take him to the Champlain Valley Fair in Essex Junction, Vt.a great opportunity for country fans on both sides of the border to take in one of country music’s best young artists.Nichols, an Arkansas native, is already well-known for songs like ‘The Impossible’, a beautiful, well-written ode to our inner strength, and ‘Bro-kenheartsville’, which is as country as you can get.His current hit is the cleverly written ‘She Only Smokes When She Drinks’, which will likely be another number one for the young singer. There’s no compromise with this country newcomer — it is country all the way.Just like the artists he credits as inspiration (Haggard, Jones, Jennings), he remains true to himself. From toe-tapers to haunting love ballads, Nichols has a wide selection of pure country material that he often writes himself. When you hear this amazingly rich and mature baritone, you can’t help but think that Nichols was destined to become a singer. But the truth is that Nichols was actually raised with an older brother and younger sister in a medium-sized town Arkansas by a father who was a truck driver.Nichols was first exposed to music by his father, who played bass and performed a couple of local gigs as part of a country music outfit In high school, while the other kids were into AC/DC and Motley Crüe, Nichols started listening to Randy Travis, George Strait and Alan Jackson.Following tradition, Nichols secured a record deal on Intersound Records when he was just 19 years old, and before the label folded he recorded his first self-titled album. After the label shut down, Nichols did anything to make ends meet.He moved furniture, installed cable TV systems until finally he got to meet guitarist/producer Brent Rowan through his friend Brian Spradlin. When Rowan finally listened to some of Nichols material, he called the next day wanting to meet the young singer for himself. They both agreed that they wanted to turn in a record where there would be no compromises — an album that would eventually be filled with hits.Judging by the response to Nichols’ debut album on Universal South, he just might be the next George Strait. He has managed to make an album of classic traditional country music that still sounds fresh. For country music fans, Aug.25 is the perfect opportunity to see a great show with two of the most talented traditional country singer performing in a very modern way.The show-begins at 7 p.m.Tickets are already on sale, for $38.50, $36.50 and $31.50 plus service charges. To reserve, visit www.flynncenter.org/CVF/jackson.html, or call the Flynn Regional Box Office at 802-863-5966.COURTESY JOENICHOLS.COM Country crooner Joe
