March 5-March 11, 1999 page 3 wwnshipsw eek " — «THE— » N — RECORD Talk of The Townships Double feature at the Haskell library Seeing Through the Garbage Saturday afternoon, Feb.27 at 3 p.m.- The Haskell Free Library, Derby Line, Vt., and Stanstead, Que., invites adults and teens to a unique double feature - Luke Thompson’s Litter-a-Tour and Bread & Puppet’s Cantastoria; Life, 1,2,3.Born in Charleston, Vt., a graduate of Lake Region High School, Luke Thompson is a young multi-media artist who created Litter-a-Tour after touring for several months with the University of Vt.debating team.They debated 500 schools and came in third in the nation! What exactly is Litter-a-Tour?Technically, Litter-a-tour is a performance of Luke’s thesis, first presented in 1996, when he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from The University of Vt.But no graduate thesis in studio art has ever looked quite like this one.About the size of a large steamer trunk, Litter-a-tour (also called The Book) is a 45-minute, often funny, devastating monologue exploring Luke’s revelations from the dump.If this sounds confusing it is because this is a show that defies description.Luke designed The Book (taller than he is at 6-foot-four) to challenge our assumptions to make us take a second look at things we normally take for granted.“I want to help people draw some conclusions about the environment we live in,” says Luke.“At the same time I hope to spark a positive note that will resonate in the future by offering a way of thinking about our environment that can help people really see through the garbage - to overcome it by seeing through it.” Luke has performed Litter-a-Tour at sBread & Puppet, for a Burlington television station, Flashpoint, and at various local community events.This is the first time he will perform with a French translator! For our second feature and with the help of ten local young performers, Bread & Puppet’s Maria Schumann and Lila Winstead will present Caotas-toria: Life, 1,2,3 an old form of theater using a narrator, a chorus and a sheet of cloth to tell a story.They will also perform a mystery puppet show exploring the afternoon’s theme - seeing through and overcoming the garbage.Recommended for adults, teens and children over ten, there is no charge for admission.Plan to come early as seating is limited.There will be semi-simultaneous translation into French.Call 873-3022 or 876-2471 and ask for Miriam or Marie-France for more information.Two new exhibits in Sutton ArtsSutton hosts Montreal artists in March ArtsSutton will host an exhibition by two Montreal artists throughout the month of March.Accueil Bonneau choir in E.T.The choir of the Accueil Bonneau will be in Sherbrooke raising funds for La Chaudronée.This choir is made up of homeless men who were living on the streets of Montreal and who came to l’Accueil Bonneau for meals and occasional shelter.They became much better known when they went to Paris last fall as an inspiration to ‘les clochards’ of that city.La Chaudronée is a low cost restaurant offering meals to Sherbrooke to people who couldn’t otherwise afford to eat out.In the process, jobs are created, as well as opportunities for volunteers.This benefit concert will be held at St.Patrick’s church on the corner of King and Gordon Streets at 8 p.m.Cost is $10.Sculptor/ceramist Naomi Pearl will display her works in clay, metal and glazes.Jackie Cytrynbaum, photographer, will present her recent black and white images.Their works will be on display from March 6 to March 28.The public is invited to attend the opening on Saturday, March 6 at 2 p.m.ArtsSutton will host a photography exhibition from April 3 to April 25.Joyce Rapoport will display recentpho-tographic works.Photographer billiewayne will display pictures from a series of 36 photographs entitled “extracts of SilverBlue”.This series was funded by a grant from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec.The public is invited to his opening on April 3 at 2 p.m.ArtsSutton is located at 7 Academy Street in Sutton.Gallery hours are Thursday, Friday and Sunday 1 p.m.to 5 p.m.and Saturday from 10 a.m.to 12 noon and from 1 p.m.to 5 p.m.For information about classes or upcoming exhibits, telephone (450) 538-2563.Grenadine features 20 Canadian bands Five Townships tunes included on CD By Matthew Shepherd Record Correspondent Lennoxville After two years, two releases and a new name, Grenadine Records is rolling with a new CD.^The brainchild of Bishop’s student Eric Lapointe and former student Alex Megelas, Grenadine is a streamlined version of the duo’s first label, Bittersweet Records.Syrup & Gasoline, Grenadine’s first disc, is a compilation of 20 independent Canadian bands, including five from the Eastern Townships.“We wanted to show our commitment to where we started,” says Lapointe.“I’m a Townshipper at heart, and there’s tons of talent out here.” The Townships bands are Lowbrow (from Knowlton), Jalo-Pea (from Granby), and Les Thanatologues, Les Sequelles, and Les Macchabees, all from Sherbrooke.The disc is the result of two years of effort, starting with Lapointe and Megelas’ original plans of creating a seven-inch compilation single.“The seven-inch was scrapped,” Lapointe explains, “so we decided to do an actual CD.” The jump from a four-song seven-inch to a twenty-song disc added some complications, but filling the roster wasn’t difficult.“One of the bands on the seven-inch wasn’t able to do it, but there were so many other bands willing to be on it that we decided to make a CD.” Now that the CD has finally been pressed and is ready to hit the shelves, Lapointe and Megelas are euphoric.“It’s amazing to finally see it in one piece,” Lapointe laughs.“I’ve seen all the elements before, but there’s nothing that measures up to this.” Megelas and Lapointe are no strangers to the music industry -
