Your Weekly Guide to Townships Culture The Record August 10 - August 16,2012 ¦ RURART creates contemporary dance in Promises to be a bountiful experience BARBARA LAVOIE Left to right, Amelie L Choquette, Linnea Gwiazda, Michaela Gerussi and Levana Prud’Homme (missing Carolann Shea)RURART strike a silhouette pose in the frame of the bam door where part of RURART takes place on La Généreuse farm in Cookshire-Eaton.By Barbara Lavoie Take five young talented contemporary dancers, house them together in a collective live, work, play space in a rural natural environment for a week, feed them from one of the area’s first organic farms, offer them an opportunity to interact with farm and domestic animals and a few eclectic neighbours who play music, and what do you get?A bountiful experience and the debut of RURART danse contemporaine en milieu rural this weekend, Saturday evening at 7 p.m., Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.at La Généreuse Fruits and Vegetables, 540 Labonté Road in Cookshire-Eaton.Amélie L Choquette was born 27 years ago on the organic farm her parents, Francine Lemay, who is still very much part of the activities on the farm, and the late Gaétan Choquette, founded in 1980.Following her graduation three months ago from Montreal’s Concordia University, Choquette earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a double major, contemporary dance and painting and drawing, she began fulfilling a recurring dream - to return to her birthplace and begin her career in the arts.“I wanted to return to the farm to share the arts with the nature I grew up in,” said Choquette, during an interview at a picnic table in the orchard in the company of her friends and dance collaborators, and husband.“So I asked my friends to join my husband and I here for nine days to see what might evolve in the way of artistic project,” she said.“I hoped for a bit of thinking outside the box, a return to authenticity.” The barn plays an integral role The farm’s barn, a classic century-old or more barn, plays a key role in setting the stage for what Choquette envisions for the property.While the upper level of the old barn offers the perfect performance space, the lower level is fully equipped with a functional kitchen, bedrooms and a well-lit studio with inside access to the upstairs.A wild flower and annual garden skirts the barn that is situated well away from the main homestead where her parents still live.What once was the farm’s retail store now serves as a reception room and has the potential to be both a box office and a café, a project Choquette’s husband, Bernard Boutin, 25, is interested in developing.A chicken coop, yes with real live chickens, and an old apple orchard with several picnic tables is not far away.“We’ve been spending most of our time around this (picnic) table, either eating, relaxing or planning the project,” said Choquette.Several small cottages, located behind the barn along a path that makes them almost out-of-sight on the property thanks to trees and foliage, offer renters an opportunity to live on a farm for a week, month or even a year.Particularly excited about a new tenant that will soon be arriving with her horse to stay for a couple of years, Choquette finds this aspect of “sharing with others ” part of the appeal of being back on her farm.In addition, she acknowledged the vibrant and supportive arts community found in the urban setting of Lennoxville, and hoped bringing some of that enthusiasm to the rural environment would also be part of the process.“It is something new for here (the country),” she added.A bountiful experience A little translation from French to English and you discover RURART embraces the meaning found in the farm’s name - La Généreuse.“Translated into English, the name becomes.The Bountiful,” said Levana Prud’Homme, 24, from Montreal.The five dance collaborators, Choquette, Linnea Gwiazda, 21, Michaela Gerussi, 22, Prud’Homme and Carolann Shea, 23, who was absent for the photo but will part of the weekend’s installation, have worked together in the past.“Last year we worked together and created something for the 2011 Montreal Fringe Festival,” said Gerussi.Choquette explained all five women appreciated Concordia University’s contemporary dance program and its “emphasis on creativity rather than performance." They agreed the process a rural setting they learned at school has greatly contributed to the process they used to create RURART as a collective living, working and playing project.“This is our first edition of RURART, but we all see it as just the beginning of something much bigger and much more long term,” Choquette said.They see RURART evolving into a multi-disciplinary event with potential for sculpture, visual arts and, of course, more dance workshops, classes and performances involving more than just the five of them.“We will be incorporating the natural soundscape into this weekend’s performance,” said Gwiazda, adding, “If a bird, a tractor, a dog or a bug enters into the space, it will become part of it.” Without giving too much detail about the event, Gerussi described how “the project will engage the public” and stimulate “all the senses.it’s a 360 degree experience.” She added, “It’s been a bit daunting (the collective process) but very inspiring.It’s been something that has been stewing in the pot for awhile.” Prud’Homme described similar kinds of projects, arts set in a rural milieu, in other parts of Canada and the US, but they have not modelled RURART after any one in particular.Even the Montreal dance community, as large and vibrant as it is, “has nothing in the country.” “I’m really excited to follow through with this project and I want to thank Amélie for all the work she has put into it,” added Prud’Homme.“It has been wonderful working together.” RURART danse contemporaire en milieu rural, the debut event is truly a collaborative enterprise, music, guitar and percussion, will be provided a couple of the cottage tenants.Light refreshments will be available thanks to Boutin.Arrive for 7 p.m.for the Saturday event, and for 2:30 p.m.on Sunday afternoon.The adventure’s starting point is the bam.Tickets are not being sold, but financial donations, entirely voluntary, are welcome.Plan for an experience of between one and two hours in the form setting, followed by some open discussion between the artists, musicians and au- Cont’d on page 8 Page 2 August 10 - August 16, 2012 TV Listings TALK The scholars strike back Good Reads /' 'V V' Patrick Lacroix Michael Ignatieff is first and foremost an academic, and it is perhaps best to judge his contribution to public discourse on this basis.Setting aside his politics for the moment, his merits as a scholar have been widely acknowledged by his peers, and while it may be best to spare oneself his most theoretical works, the others are by contrast highly accessible.Such is the case with his official, authorised biography of Isaiah Berlin.Ignatieff, who at Harvard earned a doctoral degree in history, is at his best with this fluid tale of Berlin’s personal journey, balancing the man’s professional life, personality, and place in the world.While Berlin made a name for himself as a professor and public intellectual and never sought adventure for himself, one could hardly find such an active participant in so many world events without falling into fiction.Born under the old Russian Empire, Berlin was a first-hand witness, in Pet-rograd, to the Russian revolutions of 1917, which left a profound impression on the boy.Following studies in Depression-era England, he served as a war propagandist in the United States, then a neutral country.He continued serving as a diplomatic attache in wartime Washington but resisted the call to serve the new state of Israel.Meanwhile, a post-war battle between Marxist and Liberal scholars followed the battle for military victory.Berlin counted himself among the latter and devoted the rest of his high-profile career, through the entirety of the Cold War, to the philosophical defence of freedom.Ignatieff s Isaiah Berlin: A Life is not a dull recitation of philosophy or politics; it is the remarkably interesting story of one man who found himself immersed in a number of world-changing events, sometimes in spite of himself, over the course of nine decades.In truth Berlin could not have selected a better biographer.In Ignatieff he found a fellow son of Eastern European émigrés, a promis- ing academic as he himself once was, and a talented writer.Much as Berlin was never far removed from the realm of politics, so it is with Ignatieff, from his work on human rights to his ill-fated jump into elective politics, which, incidentally, offered strong echoes of Berlin’s political creed.Berlin died in 1997 and the book, begun as a series of conversations with Ignatieff, appeared the following year.Ignatieff, like Berlin before him, has been confronted with very treacherous situations, through the years; if their adventures leave readers desiring more, it may do to turn to fellow historian Dotsy Lamb, a creation of novelist Maria Hudgins.Dotsy Lamb represents the historical profession about as accurately as Indiana Jones does archaeology, but that is precisely the fun of these mysteries.In Death of an Obnoxious Tourist, she enlists her research and analytical skills to resolve a gruesome murder in the midst of a group of American travellers in Italy.This short book is staged much like a murder-mystery event, where readers are invited to play along but must rely on the investigator’s expertise.The eighth and final session of the TD Summer Reading Club will take place next Wednesday.Staff and volunteers hope to see a numerous turnout for this farewell, as many children will then be off to school.Throughout the summer there has been talk of imaginary animals, and thus it is fitting that the library should now offer The Complete Tales of Beatrix Potter, a hardcover volume of twenty-three stories that are enlivened by the author’s original sketches and watercolours.Long before the mischievous Bugs Bunny, there was a mischievous Peter Rabbit who, in the first of Potter’s books, strayed into Mr.McGregor’s garden.There he narrowly evaded the fate of his father who, as his mother casually remarked, “had an accident there;
