Les Trésors de la Grange is well known in the Eastern Townships as not only a tourist and cultural attraction, but also as a non-profit arts, crafts and antiques centre where artists from the region display and sell their work to the general public. Now, the newly-renovated 130-year-old barn will be the location for the latest exhibit of works by the students of Geraldine Gendron, one of whom is 12-year-old Nadia Beaulieu from Magog. The exhibit begins with a vernissage on Aug.15, and runs until the end of the month.Gendron has been the force behind many artists for the last 25 years, both locally and in the Montreal area.Teaching courses in schools and community centres six days per week, Gendron has seen a rise in popularity in oil painting, more than any other media.“Nadia has an inner talent that will take her far,” said Gendron.“Many adults attend my courses due to their desire to capture a lost dream, but someone like Nadia comes because she is responding to a passion deep within her.It is refreshing to see such talent at such a young age.” Beaulieu has been drawing since the age of seven. She worked with watercolours, and finally decided that oil painting was the best medium for her. When she gets older, Beaulieu said she would like to travel, and continue her studies in the art field.Gendron noted that Beaulieu’s attention to detail reaches far beyond her young years. It is what she feels is the key to making her paintings come to life.“Everyone tells me that I get my passion for drawing and painting from my grandfather,” said Beaulieu.“My parents have done a great deal to encourage me to work towards my goals as an artist.I find it is a great way to work out my frustrations and NANCY NOURSE/CORRESPONDENT Twelve-year-old.Nadia Beaulieu of Magog is stuffed with goat cheese and sun-dried tomatoes, which are just too good. They can serve as finger-food, as a pretty first course, or even as an accompaniment for almost any grilled dinner. If you will be making a lot of rolls (doubling or tripling the recipe) and want to keep the cost down, I suggest substituting cream cheese for the goat cheese. It is just as good, although it may sound a bit less fancy. One more important tip: Make sure the tomatoes are as ripe as can be, almost falling apart, or else they will not develop that deep, almost sweet flavour when slow-roasted (ps: we call them “sun-dried” for a better effect!).Ingredients (for approximately 10 rolls) 1 large eggplant 10 large ripe tomatoes (or 15 medium ones) 100 grams goat cheese salt, thyme, freshly-ground pepper 2 tbsp corn-on-the-cob, baked potatoes, salads, bread, dessert, or whatever your heart desires.Because some people are darned fussy about their beef, have toothpick-tags made to identify each piece of meat as it comes through the door. When the guests arrive, have one person in charge of looking after the beef and tagging it appropriately. If the beef is a burger, get it into the fridge. All other cuts artists By Debbie Tacium Ladry Record Correspondent André Lessard, president of the Symposium des Arts de Dudswell, has promised good weather for this weekend.“The weather hasn’t let us down yet,” he said, referring to the past three editions of the Symposium. But come rain or shine, 20 visual artists have confirmed their presence at the municipality’s community centre, located less than 30 minutes to the east of Sherbrooke on highway 112.The atmosphere promises to contain all the congeniality and hospitality of a local event, but the talent is far from being simply local."The artists come by invitation only.We have a selection committee, and since we avoid having two of the same type of artist, each one will be easily distinguishable,” said Lessard.Participating artists come from as far away as Quebec City and St-Hy-acinthe.Several of the younger artists have also won individual bursaries, such as Matthieu Binette, a sculptor from Sherbrooke. One of the noteworthy activities at the last Dudswell symposium is the chevalet musical, a sort of musical chairs in which eight artists, their names picked out of a hat, must begin a painting to a musical accompaniment. Each time the music stops, they must rotate to continue a colleague’s painting.Five rotations of six to seven minutes each are achieved, and a title is given to each painting, which is then auctioned off to the audience.Lessard remembers that last year’s chevalet was very popular with the symposium crowd.“Everyone was moving at the same time, following their favourite artist from painting to painting. It was a lot of fun to see people’s reactions.” Dudswell is doing its best to make art a reason to come and take a look around in a municipality whose anglophone history is apparent in its name and its architecture. The community centre offers a studio available year-round and its Musée Beauregard is renowned for its wood sculptures dating from 1930 to 1950.Over 25,000 visitors came to see them last year alone. As well, the new Quebec Central tourist train arrives at Rebecca Hall, allowing visitors to view an ancestral building from the 1880s.Other activities that Lessard believes distinguish this symposium are the public demonstrations on various subjects, such as composing a painting, drawing and decorative ducks. Each one is given by an artist, such as Fernand Gosselin of Beauport, who is reputed for his wooden duck creations. The demonstrations will be held at specified times during the weekend. The two anglophone participants also happen to be residents of Dudswell, although both are originally from Montreal.Gordon Pearson specializes in watercolours, while Stuart Main, who used to do newspaper illustration, uses oil as his medium.Their easels will be located outside of the community centre, as they often use landscapes as their study.Pearson often paints farming scenes and landscapes. He has lived in Dudswell for the past 30 years, and this is his third year at the symposium.“It’s a lot of fun.The organization makes a good effort.People do this for the joy of it.” The Symposium des Arts de Dudswell begins today at noon, and proposes a supper with the artists at 5 p.m.It continues the Saturday from 9 a.m.to 9 p.m., and Sunday from 9 a.m.to 5 p.m.For more information, call 819-887-6093.Global is proud to present Bonsai culture in Stanstead By Nancy Nourse Special to The Record Stanstead Ever wondered about the fascinating art form of bonsai trees — the history behind them and how they grow in such unique shapes?Well, this Friday and Saturday would be the perfect time for you to visit the Haskell Library in Stanstead for the fourth annual bonsai exposition.Hobbyists from the U.S.and Canada will be giving demonstrations and lectures on this ancient art form.“I have always been an avid nature lover. The word ‘bonsai’ actually means ‘tree in a pot’.This ancient Chinese art goes back many years.Originally it was only the rich people who could afford the constant care that they needed,” explained hobbyist Michel Villeneuve.“A bonsai tree can be almost any tree.A sequoia is the most commonly used, but most any seedling from a greenhouse such as a crab tree or juniper is also possible.” The legend behind the art tells of a Chinese priest who took a walk up into the mountains to meditate. One day in particular, he came back feeling more at peace than usual. He returned to the spot where he had been praying that day and found that it was surrounded by tiny trees.“This priest was so impressed with these little trees, believing that they were the cause of his renewed spirit, that he brought one down, planted it in a pot and started to care for it, regarding it as a treasure,” Villeneuve added.“Unbeknown to the priest, this phenomenon is not at all rare in higher elevations and regions such as the Arctic Circle, where the weather is particularly harsh and the land is rocky with little to nourish these trees.” The Japanese eventually took over the art which was quickly spread to America and Europe when WWII troops took samples home after the war. What was once only found in the homes of the rich and powerful, has now become an art form that anyone can learn. For the last seven years, Villeneuve and some of his fellow bonsai artists have traveled into Montreal to learn about the bonsai at the Botanical Gardens with his vast collection of more than 2,000 trees. Some of the collection from the Botanical Gardens will also be on display this Friday and Saturday at the Haskell Library.Lectures will be presented at 10 a.m.each day, with demonstrations at 2 p.m.The Saturday showing will be in conjunction with Derby Line Day.For more info, call 819-876-2471.1! - RECORD TALK - Movies CANWEST NEW SERVICE Pictured left to right: Daniel Letterle (Vlad) and director Todd Graf on the set of Camp, a movie about a group of misfits who come together and learn something about self worth.By Jamie Portman CanWest News Service Within the first 10 minutes of Todd Graffs Camp, an acne-ridden teenager named Michael shows up at his high school prom in drag - complete with high heels and fishnets. He’s not only thrown out of the dance, he gets beaten up by his classmates. Also Jenna, a plump sadsack whose jaw has been wired shut because her father is determined she lose weight. They’re misfits and outsiders. They also want to be performers. And that’s why they end up at Camp Ovation, a summer sanctuary for aspiring singers, dancers and actors. In the process, they not only hone their talents, they also discover something that has been denied them in the past — their sense of self worth. It’s no accident that a lot of the kids there are gay. That was always part of Todd Graffs intent in writing and directing Camp which has already opened in the U.S.to enthusiastic reviews and starts arriving in Canada on Aug.8.His film follows in the footsteps of Fame and A Chorus Line in documenting the hopes and disappointments of people yearning for a musical theatre career. But Camp ends up going further. As the Los Angeles tabloid, Entertainment Today, pointed out recently, “it ‘outs’ the relationship between the gay and musical theatre communities (and) openly embraces queer youth and their role in the theatre É” Graff figures he’s simply telling it as it is.“To say that theatre is a haven for gay people is a truism at this point,” Graff comments.“1 think that historically it has always been so and it’s still that way.” He’s not suggesting that the performing arts are exclusively gay, but he does believe that they offer homosexuals an outlet for self expression denied them in other areas of life.Veteran screenwriter Graff (Used People, Coyote Ugly) was not interested in delivering an R-rated movie. When he pitched his script to producers, he won their attention by telling them that it was “Fame goes to summer camp.” Where he was in danger of losing them was on issues of sexuality: he was proposing a PG-13 film in which most of the teenage males are gay; in fact one of Camp's ongoing comic riffs involves a handsome guitarplaying dude named Vlad who is something rare at Camp Ovation - “an honest-to-God straight boy.” Some executives were especially freaking out over a “lSyear-old drag queen” as a key character.“Do they need to be gay?” one producer asked plaintively, suggesting that the kids be “Trekkies" instead.“That kind of thing was what I was up against,” laughs Graff.“But this was the first movie I wanted to direct, so I really had to make sure it was the one I wanted it to be.” The seed was planted years ago when the young Todd Graff attended an actual summer camp in New York State called Stagedoor Manor. It became the real-life inspiration for the movie.“I was a camper there for three years and worked there for two years subsequently.I went there with Jennifer Jason Leigh.I was Robert Downey’s counsellor.Natalie Portman went there for five years.Mandy Moore went there. There’s a list as long as your arm: this is the first thing they ever did that let them know there was a world out there for them that they could be part of." What struck him about Stagedoor Manor was its openness and tolerance, its readiness to accept young people who were different, its determination to help each and every camper reach his or her artistic potential.“The camp is an amazing place. For the kids that go there, this is where they get off the bus and everything is in colour. This is where they can actually be who they are.Let them be freaks, let them be as out there as they need to be.Don’t try to be anything else.” To Graff this was something worth making a movie about. There are no big name stars in Camp.In fact, virtually all the youngsters came to it without professional experience but with a burning wish to perform.Graff says the very idea of using “real show business school actors” would be “horrifying.” He jokes that a brief 22-day shooting schedule would have left him no time to break the bad habits they had already learned. He wanted people who were fresh from day one, “so it seemed a much better strategy to use kids with absolutely no experience and no bad habits.” Eighteen-year-old Robin De Jesus, who plays the teenage drag queen, is typical of these choices. He came to Camp with more than 20 school musicals behind him and with a desire to make it professionally. He has no hesitation of spying that he related personally to the character of Michael.“I personally think almost any teenager on the face of the earth could relate to any role in the film,” says Dejesus, who grew up in Connecticut.“There’s always the feeling of being the outsider, especially at high school.” He has now come to the conclusion that there is no such thing as an in crowd.“Everyone is unique in their own way and the best thing is to accept yourself for who you are and hope that others can accept you when you’re different.” It’s not just the fact that he’s allowed to play a drag queen that stuns De Jesus, who says he’s always been more comfortable with his sexuality than with his appearance.“I mean just the fact that Todd could give a kid with acne a lead role in a movie — and with an afro and gay.I thought it was both the most ridiculous and most amazing thing on earth.” Graff, who is gay himself, is flattered to have his movie compared with Fame, which was inspired by New York’s High School Of The Performing Arts, but he says there are marked differences.“Ours has a much more casual, offhanded way of dealing with issues of sexuality. In Fame they have one gay guy and in the movie he kind of has to be in therapy and is a miserable, sad character. Then they cut him out of the TV show.It was important to me that my movie accurately reflect what I see as these kids' attitude towards sexuality and not an antiquated idea of what it is.” Ultimately, he says, sexuality is not the overriding concern of his movie.Rather, he argues that young people who are different — whether it’s a gay male teenager or the overweight schoolgirl or the kid with personality problems — need movies like Camp in order to feel normal.“I would be thrilled if some gay kid saw this movie and said: ‘Oh, I’m not alone. How great!’ I absolutely want that, and I invite it However, I think it also speaks to issues of togetherness that go beyond just being gay.’ ¦ THE, r Bestselling albums 1.Bad Boys II soundtrack, various (1) 2.Dutty Rock, Sean Paul, (2) 3.Fallen, Evanescence (5) 4.Strays, Jane’s Addiction (new) own, but here’s hoping for more groups like them.-T.D.'œncctoe JHRSKY FOUNTAINS OF WAYNE Welcome Interstate Managers (Virgin) These guys might be too smart for their own good.On one hand, they craft really brainy and attractive rock.' ' Bright Future in Sales" has a sharp guitar riff and the hooks people liked in The Odds (R.I.P.).On the other hand, there is a cleverness that might not be trustworthy: that is, you get the feeling that Fountains aren't telling you everything, the whole truth. The same song is a social comment on career pursuits that is just ambivalent enough to make you wonder if there's more they would like to say but don't.Its a compelling, dynamic and enigmatic CD.-CM WfxoMi Inhrsjau Managua PMD The Awakening (Boondox/Solid/Traffic/Fusion III) Like his landmark rap duo EPMD, Parrish Smith just won’t stay down. But the problem with half a duo is, it’s just that.In EPMD, Smith (or P, if you prefer) bounces off partner Erick Sermon with tag-team slickness. Here, his basso pro-fundo is appealing, but it sounds like it’s missing something. He comes up with some creative rhymes, but doesn’t have the versatility to make this more than a heads’ record - for EPMD fans looking for a fix.-CM.SOFTCANYON Broken Spirit, I Will Mend Your Wings (Alien8/Sonic Unyon) From the embers of Montreal indie-rock juggernaut Tricky Woo comes something strange. As its name suggests, Soft Canyon leaves behind its predecessor’s ballsy rock ’n roll that wooed critics and fans both here and stateside. It’s an odd choice, given the current chip value of straight-up rock revivalism.Yet band leader (and former Woo frontman) Andrew Dickson had a muse to follow. He and his new recruits have a, um, soft spot for the psychedelic grooves, jams and trippiness of the 1970s.Amazingly, in a mere 33 minutes, they turn out an epic-sounding album that conjures a variety of moods and sounds from the era, without getting lost in any one.Sometimes it's bluesy jam-rock, at others it’s Pink Floyd trippiness. In between, there is noodling, orchestration and a meticulous attention to detail. This is a self-indulgent project, but, refreshingly, it is the result of a clear, personal musical vision and not some sound-alike assembly line.-CM.REPCORDZ What if they held a revolution and nobody came?(Mayday Records/Union Label Group) You know the Ripcordz. They are from Montreal. They have rocked all over our great land for more than 20 '«H»! ' years. They bring you punk rock might, fury, fun and goodness all in one tidy little parcel. With over a dozen songs at under 40 minutes, you know the tight trio will thunder gleefully through numbers of unity like ‘X’ and ‘Door 9’.The excel with ‘Freedom Fried’ and ‘The Fence’, and are just plain good with ‘Girls In The Pit’.-T.D.KISS Symphony Alive IV (Sanctuary) In theory, Kiss with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra could be a lot of fun.In concert, maybe it was.On album, not much hap-pens.Throughout the record (Kiss’s fourth live album, hence the Alive IV) the band makes reference to history.Teaming with an orchestra may be part of the Kiss history but it certainly adds little but another name to the list of rock bands that have appeared with orchestras.Mostly, the band runs through its repertoire with the large ensemble sawing along.Once in a while, for “Shout It Out Loud,” there is a real depth of sound but the overall effect is underwhelming.-C.N.BRAD PAISLEY Mud on the Tires (Arista/BMG) It’s third time at bat for West Virginia native Brad Paisley and while he doesn’t quite knock it out of the park like your Tim McGraw, he hits the back wall hard. With his vocal, writing and guitar chops he remains a triple threat and a witty one at that. His moving cover of the traditional ‘Farther Along’ with Vince Gill would sound great on radio but won’t make it, although the Alison Krauss duet on ‘Whiskey Lullaby’ just may.Following ‘Celebrity,’ look for ‘Ain’t Nothin’ Like’ and the title song to make this one major hit album. This album is recommended for a drive out to the park with the top down on a sunny summer afternoon with this happy thing cranked up high.-CM.AMVEIV iTHF.| page 8 August 8-August 14, 2003 RECORD “=—~—=~ TALK Young actress excels at hard role CANWEST NEWS SERVICE Kate Hudson (left) and Naomi Watts star in Le Divorce.Watts plays Roxeanne, an expatriate American poet unhappy in Paris.y-".• : I « By Jamie Portman CanWest News Service It was a character that no major actress wanted to play. But casting it properly was crucial to making a sophisticated comedy-drama like Le Divorce work for audiences. So veteran director James Ivory was getting nervous about finding the right person to take on the role of Roxeanne, an expatriate American poet who at the start of the movie is pregnant, unhappy and living in Paris.“Nobody wanted to play Roxy,” Ivory says now.“I can’t tell you how many people I sent that script to.It was difficult to cast.” A disbelieving Ivory kept hearing back that the role was too weepy and that none of his prospective actresses wanted to spend most of the film looking pregnant. He couldn’t convince them there was much more to the character than that: Roxeanne is a gifted artist; she has just been deserted by her shallow upper-class French husband, and her powers of resilience in the face of adversity are being put to the test; in addition, she and her visiting American sister Isabel (Kate Hudson) become immersed in a conflict of cultures that pits them against Rox-eanne’s implacable in-laws.Salvation came when Ivory took a look at David Lynch’s dark and labyrinthine thriller, Mulholland Drive, and Naomi Watts’s stunning performance as one of Lynch’s emotionally frazzled heroines.“As soon as I saw Naomi, I thought: Here is someone with a tremendous emotional range, someone who could play a woman with true artistic sensibility.Naomi can portray a poet.” Then Kate Hudson, who had already been cast, threw her support behind Watts.“The casting of the sister was as important to me as playing my character,” Hudson says.“So Naomi was the person I said I really wanted to be in the movie." Still, thanks to his earlier disappointments, Ivory was prepared to hear the blond Australian beauty say no to his modestly budgeted project. After all, her career was skyrocketing. Thanks to Mul- holland Drive, Watts had been named Female Star of Tomorrow at the 2002 ShoWest convention and picked up several Best Actress Awards.DreamWorks Pictures had immediately cast her in The Ring, a horror thriller that was bound to raise her stock — and also her price — even higher in Tinseltown. But Watts said yes — without hesitation.Furthermore, she shares Ivory’s mystification over the refusal of so many actresses to accept the part.“That seems so weird to me,” she says incredulously.“It’s the type of role I yearn for.I heard also that the people he offered it to were worried about being pregnant for two-thirds of the movie or more. But it didn’t bother me.Not at all.” Watts could well be the busiest actress in Hollywood these days.Le Divorce begins arriving on Canadian film screens Friday, but by next winter she will have opened in at least six more movies, including a grim drug drama, 21 Grams, in which she costars with Sean Penn and Benicio Del Toro; the Australian western, Ned Kelly, opposite Heath Ledger; and the romantic comedy, I Heart Huckabees, with Jude Law and Dustin Hoffman. The films reflect Watts’s catholic tastes — she’s resolute about not being trapped in a rut — but of this lot, Le Divorce promises to be the most non-mainstream, coming as it does from producer Ismail Merchant and director Ivory, the filmmaking team that gave moviegoers Howard’s End and Remains of the Day.Watts sees it as “a comedy of manners about two different cultures” — which is one reason she wanted to do it.Compared with Hulk or Seabiscuit or The Ring, it is an exotic specimen.“I’d just come off doing The Ring, and it was a movie that was so plot-driven.And this movie was so little about plot and so much about people and their lives and how they affect each other. That’s what I like about it.” There were other attractions — including a solid ensemble cast featuring Hudson, Stockard Channing, Glenn Close, Sam Waterston and Leslie Caron. There was also the fact that this was a Merchant-Ivory project: When Watts looks back on their films she always remembers “how great the characters were and how wonderful the performances were.” Watts shared her interview time with her pregnant costar Hudson who believes the movie — which is based on a novel by Diane Johnson — has some important things to say about relationships. In the course of the movie, Hudson’s character becomes involved in an affair with a suave middle-aged Frenchman who also happens to be the uncle of Roxeanne’s estranged husband — a situation which contributes to the story’s complex emotional and cultural dynamic.Hudson sees the affair as “just the beginning of a long life lesson” for Isabel, a character she found endlessly fascinating to portray. But for both actresses, the icing on the cake was the relationship between the two sisters and the opportunity to work with each other.“We had this thing from the beginning which was that we wanted to make the movie together before we even knew each other, really," Hudson says.“I wanted her to be the sister, so I already had a bond that existed before I knew her." «RATES DES CARAÏBES (6) (Mol MAUVAIS GARÇONS B ( 13Y ?violence) Every day: 12:25,18:25 SEABISCUIT (G) (FV) Every day except ThU: 15:30,21:30TtlU: 15:30 LARA CROFT TOMB RAI0ER: LE BERCEAU DE LA VIE (G) (NadvcmmnM for young dvunn) Every day: 12:50,15:50, 18:50,21:50 SHOWTIMeS EFFECTIVE AUGUST 8TH TO AUGUST I4TH msidtd for young cMdrat) Every day: 12:30, LA GRANDE SEDUCTION (G) Every day: 12:35,15:35, ia35,21:35 JOHNNY ENGLISH (FV) (6) Every day: 160021:45 FREDDY VS JASON ( 13* horror 6 violence) (FV) Thu 1000 ESPIONS EN HERBE 30 FIN DU JEU SWAT.(FV) Every day: 12.45,1545, 1845,2145 UN VENDREDI 0INGUE, DINGUE, DIN6UG (G) Every day: 13:10, 16:10, 19:10,2140 LE MARIAGE ( 13») (coarse language) Everyday: 1300,1600, 1900,2145 6IGU (I3Y) (FV)Every day except Tiw 12.45,1845 Thu: 1245 (G) Evey day 12:20, 1420, 16:20, 1¥Britnf(kfffi»rVSJ/iS0M(FV} Thursday, August i4tti at 7;30 pj& LUUJiJLi.galaxycinemas.com NFO 8 2 TALK OF THEloWnshipS AUGUST 8-AUGUST 14, 2003 PAGE 9 Station Guide 6AM 6:30 7AM 7:30 8AM I 8:30 9AM 9:30 10AM 10:30 11AM 11:30 I'.’MlYA B News (CC) News (CC) Early Show Crossing Over Crossing Over Dr.Phil Price Is Right A (CC) IV] B News Today Live With Regis and Kelly Other Half IH-lùH B CBC News: Morning (CC) Cyberchase Arthur Clifford-Red Dragon Tales Rolie Polie Olie (:16) Little Bear (:15) Save-Urns!
