Investigators involved in Operation Hammer - the police taskforce established last October to investigate corruption in the construction industry -are looking in to a series of suspicious fires that have taken place in the Eastern Townships over the last couple of months. To date, investigators have linked fires at Maisons Orford on April 7, Groupe Anctil in Granby on April 15, MTQ.Magog on April 21, Matériaux J.Anctil in Saint-Denis-de-Brompton on April 25, and Roger Dion & Fils on May 15.All five incidents involved construction companies and targeted agricultural drains and culverts (a device generally used to channel water under roads). The similarity in the events has led investigators to believe that the same people are behind all of the fires. While a link has only been established in the five fires.Sûreté du Quebec spokesperson Gregory Gomez del Prado admitted in an interview with The Record that connections could potentially be established with other recent fires in the region. He would not divulge any details regarding the ongoing investigation or even how many officers were currently involved. The taskforce is asking citizens with any information regarding the incidents to call their toll-free number at 1-888-444-1701.dmccooeye@sherbrookerecord.com A very hungry caterpillar Mermaid Theatre visits Lennoxville Nova Scotia's Mermaid Theatre brought its 85th anniversary, CHARLES CATCHPAUGH iw.¦ % Joyce Broadbent (l to r), Irene Knowlton, .Jean Lee, Allen Law, William Trew and Lloyd Styan, pictured with Rev.Moffat.Sunday June 6 was a very special day for members of Saint Paul’s United Church in Magog.A morning service commemorated this denomination’s 85th anniversary in Canada, which was created following amalgamation of three prominent persuasions (Congregationalist, Methodist, Presbyterian).By coincidence, the 11 am, Sunday morning time of worship also had an attendance of eight-five parishioners, taking part in this history-making service.Sunday's time of worship also coincided with a celebration to mark the opening of Saint Paul’s Church, then a new place of worship in Magog in 1925.Michael McLauchlan, grandson of the late Rev.McLauchlan, first minister at Saint Paul’s Church, was on hand to represent his family. The Rev.Dr.R.Deane Moffat led his congregation in a most impressive commemorative service. The time of worship was followed by a luncheon in the McLauchlan Hall, also named after Rev.McLauchlan.Memorabilia was displayed for this occasion in the church and hall, making it a most significant reflection of the parish’s colourful eighty-five years. The service and socializing afterwards saw parishioners trading pleasant recollections of the past.Fortunately, there were six seniors above age of 85 taking part in the service. These elderly parishioners presided in the cutting of a commemorative cake.- Charles Catchpaugh Security guard opens MacKenzie bridge The Transport Ministry is announcing that it will
