The new additions cap off last year’s successful ski season, which saw Sutton as the first local mountain to open all of its trails. The feat was accomplished by the first week of December. The good business continued with 12.5 per cent more season passes being sold, and an overall increase of 22 per cent more visitors over the past year.“There’s been a major increase in the number of skiers and boarders,” Tremblay continued.“In particular, there’s been a resurgence of interest in skiing, which has suffered from fads.” The new buildings aim for a more modern, cutting-edge feel, and will hopefully heighten the profile of the mountain.According to Tremblay, the Sports Expert boutique will be decked out with abundant video screens on which will be broadcast a variety of instructional and promotional videos.Raymond Héroux, a manager of vari- ous Sports Experts stores, and one of the founders of the successful chain, says: “We lacked space in the Sutton locale. The expansion allows us to bring in more models of skis and snowboards and to have a larger rental shop. With Tremblant, we’re now the best-equipped ski shop in Quebec.“This is a major expansion.A lot of the space was 20 years old, and not up to the standards of a quality ski resort.” He mentioned that the construction itself was quick and efficient, having started only at the end of July.Asked about the good business that Sutton has been doing, Héroux pointed to a number of factors that have come together at the same time.“Ski hills in Quebec benefited from the strategy of Bromont owner (and president of the Quebec Ski-Centres Association) Charles Desourdy.” Package deals and deals for groups also restimulated interest in skiing. The strategy was copied by Orford and other mountains, but the result was that everyone benefited.“Sutton never reduced its prices, but extended the age for student passes. There’s also been a general return to skiing.Baby-boomers have come back, with their pockets fuller and more time on their hands. The opening of the new facilities will take place at the end of October.Knowlton Academy kids to run for cancer research By Alex Hackett Record Correspondent The future marathon-runners of Knowlton Academy are getting ready for this year’s Terry Fox run, to take place on Sept.25 at 12:45 p.m.The 350 students of the Academy have come to be pretty enthusiastic about the annual event.Last year, they raised $6,700, which placed them fourth in the province in terms of funds collected.Traditionally they place in the province’s top five per cent. After cruising through Benoit and Lansdowne Streets, the kids will pass the marina to eventually end up back at school around 2 p.m.The total distance covered will amount to 1.8 kilometres.Every year, the students have a motivational assembly during which pledge sheets are handed out. They are then urged to fan out across the region to garner what donations they can.Principal Peggy McCourt, though new to the school, said “This is an extremely supportive community.I’ve been impressed at what I’ve seen so far.The parents come in and give it their full support.“It’s a tradition that the school runs, and as a new administrator I’m very pleased to find that the school has decided to instill in the kids the values of perseverance and helping others.” Physical education teacher John Parry, who has been largely responsible for organizing the event, concurs.See Run, Page 8 ESSAÎM ¦'V' Always at your service Pierre Marziali Pharmacist Hours: Mon.-Wed.9-8 p.m.Thurs.& Fri.9-9 p.m.Sat.9 - 6 p.m.408 South St., 2003 Brome County N Brigham woman wins annual BMP car draw Brigham’s Monique Daigneault has become the 10th person to win $25,000 towards the purchase of a new car, thanks to the BMP Foundation’s annual draw.Daigneault’s name was drawn Friday at a special ceremony in the hospital lobby.Micheline Desourdy, winner of last year’s grand prize, drew the winning ticket from a barrel of 27,150 entries.“This year we sold 5,000 tickets more than ever before,” noted Winston Bresee, chairman of the car draw.“For our 10th year, Pierre Déragon suggested we do something special. So we decided to print more tickets.” Bresee noted the efforts of a team of volunteers, many of whom worked three or four days a week selling tickets across Brome-Missisquoi.They camped out in front of stores, or showed up at almost every public event in the area this summer. If you didn’t buy a ticket, it’s not because you didn’t have the chance.Daigneault and the folks at the BMP aren’t the only ones smiling: Bedford’s Loan Meunier, Cowans-ville’s Pat Johnson, Abercorn’s Stanley Howell, Brigham’s Nicole Robichaud and Lucille Carrier of East Farnham also won $1,000 each, to spend as they please. But the real winner is of course the Brome-Missisquoi Perkins Hospital.Proceeds from the draw will be used for the purchase of a new electrocardiogram treadmill for the electrophysiology department of the hospital. One day you might find yourself puffing away on that treadmill. If you bought a ticket you helped pay for it.If not, chances are they’ll let you use it anyway.Just how much the 2003 edition raised for the hospital hasn’t been fi- nalized yet.Still, over the last nine years the car draw has collected $460,000 for the BMP Foundation, or an average of a little over $50,000 a year.So with the extra tickets you can guess this year’s total will be higher than ever.Meanwhile, Daigneault will be off shopping for a new car. With her $25,000 she either gets a new car for free, or use the money to buy something a little fancier by putting up a bit of cash. She can choose from one of five Cowansville car dealers: Rocheleau (GM), Bessette (Chrysler), Cowansville Toyota, Déragon Ford/Lincoln or Déragon Honda.Unless she already had her mind made up, it won’t be an easy choice. But it’s not everyday that you get to go car shopping with 25 grand in your pocket. As for the rest of us, we’ll just have to wait until next year.MAURICE CROSSFIELD Micheline Desourdy (left), winner of last year's grand prize, draws the winning ticket for the BMP’s 10th annual car draw.Under The Hood Tournée des 20 a success Wednesday, September 24, 2003 page 5 Craft show raises By Alex Hackett Record Correspondent Local artists and artisans opened their doors to the public this past weekend as part of the eighth annual Tournée des 20.Visitors came from the Montreal, Granby and Sherbrooke areas — the occasional Vermonter was also spotted — to view the work of a select group of 20 artists from the Dunham area.Towns on the map of this year's Tournée include Mystic, Frelighsburg, Pigeon Hill, St-Ar-mand and Dunham itself.Billed as a “Studio tour in Quebec’s wine region”, the Tournée des 20 continues through the weekends of Sept.27 and 28 to Oct.12 and 13.“The tour’s increased every year — it’s incredible,” said Linda Hobley, a painter of oil-based nature studies.“I had a bout 200 people come by in the first year, but now I get about 700.” The tour showcases a wide variety of artistic production, from painting and woodwork, to leatherwork and pottery, to sculpture, textiles and stained glass.Rejecting the notion of a kind of parochial tour whose artist’s themes are stuck solely in the bucolic, Hobley said: “The quality of the work is extremely high and very professional. Some of these artists have been supporting themselves for years.People are never disappointed when they come away.” Asked about the relevance of the festival to the local artists, she continued: “It’s an opportunity for people to come in to the studio and see the artist’s work. It’s very personal. It’s not so much about the buying but about the visibility.“Even if people don’t buy, they see what it’s like to be an artist. They comment and look around, and that’s very rewarding.” The tour takes place in what is already a season littered with festivals.Naomi Pearl, a maker of Asian-in- DAVID self-evident.“It’s a beautiful time of year. What with the fall colours, it can make for a multi-purpose visit. There are many other things to do around the Townships right now.” She received about 150 visitors to her studio this past weekend.Of the 20 artists, three are guest artists from Montreal. These include Rosie Godbout (wearable art), Elisabeth Wannaz (hats) and Jean-Marc Plumauzille (painting and illustration). In addition to the regular showcasing, there is an exhibit entitled “Nature and Creation” at the Domaine des Côtes D’Ardoise winery, a collection of 40 sculptures from over 15 artists. For more information on the Tournée des 20, visit www.art-t20.qc.ca.16,500 for BMP Organizers of the fourth annual Cowansville Craft Show presented the Brome-Missisquoi Perkins Hospital Foundation with a cheque for $6,500 last week. The money was raised through the profits from the craft show.Alan Webb, one of the show’s organizers, said $3,500 of the total was collected from the profits for table rentals, food sales and drawings for items donated by the artisans.Meanwhile, SOS Harley, which offers rides on their expensive Harley Davidson motorcycles for charity, raised $3,000.“We’d really like to thank everyone who donated their time and effort,” Webb said.“If we’re up to it next year we’ll be doing it again.” Meetings for TBL candidates The Board of the Chamber of Commerce has decided to call for two public meetings during which candidates for the next municipal elections will be asked to express themselves on questions the Chamber considers key for the future development of the Town of Brome Lake.In addition, during these two sessions the public will have an opportunity to ask pertinent questions to the candidates and understand their vision. The first session will be held on Oct.14 in the gymnasium at Knowlton Academy, at 7 p.m., and all the candidates that have decided to run for Mayor will be invited to attend. The candidates running for a Council seat will be invited to express their visions and opinions the following week, on Oct.21, at the same time and place.Welcome break from routine Laser Hair Removal Run: Cont’d from Page 1 “It was shortly after Terry’s walk that they started to run.At first there was very little interest in the community or school to do it.I took it to the town and they said ‘Well, if we’re goint to raise money, we might as well do it for ourselves or for the school. But eventually they caught on,” he said.“Knowlton has since changed quite a bit. There’s been an influx of newcomers. And it’s so obvious that this is a good cause. The last few years we’ve had very successful runs.” The students also welcome the break in daily routine.D€NIS PARADIS, M.P.Brome-Missisquoi 21 Main St.Bedford (Québec) J0J relevance of the run, the positive symbolism of it.“It’s about support and involvement. That’s what it’s all about—to condition the community to be more receptive to the needs of the community.” The
