Olivia Thirlby, best known for indies and comedies like “Juno,” has a calm yet confident presence as the rookie Judge Anderson, who happens to have been assigned to Dredd for training upon one particularly bloody day.Her psychic abilities make her an asset when things get especially chaotic, and her slightly ethereal nature provides a welcome complement to Dredd’s intense groundedness. She also serves as our emotional guide to a world that’s essentially emotionless, aside from fear.Dredd and Anderson respond to a gory triple homicide at the Peach Trees housing complex, a 200-story ghetto tower ruled from on high by the ruthless prostitute-turned-drug-lord Ma-Ma (Lena Headey, her beautiful features disfigured by a severe facial scar). When the judges take one of her lieutenants into custody as a suspect (Wood Harris, best known as Avon Barksdale from “The Wire”), Ma-Ma puts the whole place on lockdown and insists she’ll keep it that way until someone shoots the judges dead. Many of the residents are happy to do her bidding because: a) they’re deathly afraid of her, and b) she’s got them hooked on a powerful drug called Slo-Mo, which reduces the sensation of reality to 1 per cent of its usual speed. These moments make “Dredd 3D” stand out visually from so many other movies, whether they’re action flicks or drug films.Oversaturated and finely detailed, the Slo-Mo sequences are mesmerizing for their richly colored and radiantly sparkling beauty — and again, Travis doesn’t overdo them, which is key.Hardcore fans of the comic who hated the jokey 1995 “Judge Dredd,” starring Sylvester Stallone as the title character and featuring Rob Schneider, won’t just be relieved to see this incarnation. They’ll be downright giddy.“Dredd 3D,” a Lionsgate release, is rated R for strong bloody violence, language, drug use and some sexual content.Running time: 98 minutes.Three stars out of four.Motion Picture Association of America rating definition for R: Restricted.Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian.‘Perks of Being a Wallflower’ a thoughtful coming of age tale GOOGLE IMAGES Emma Watson plays a burlesque dancer in ‘The Perks of Being a Wallflower.” By Christy Lemire THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Football games and awkward dances, late-night gabfests at the local diner and tentative first kisses — they’re all there over the course of a school year in “The Perks of Being a Wallflower.” This coming-of-age drama, based on the bestselling young adult novel of the same name, may sound like total formula, right down to the rebellious thrill of experimenting with drugs and alcohol and the liberation of experiencing “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” But there’s also a darkness that follows its main character, even at his happiest, which keeps the film from turning completely safe and self-satisfied.“Perks” features a well-chosen cast, an eclectic music mix (David Bowie, New Order, Air Supply) and some moments of uncomfortable honesty as well as dreamlike wonder. And it’s anchored by strong performances on two ends of the acting spectrum: from Logan Lerman as Charlie, the high-school freshman of the film’s title whose reserved nature can’t hide his obvious intelligence and sweetness, and from Ezra Miller in a showy turn as Patrick, the quick-witted and gay senior-class clown who takes Patrick under his wing.(The role couldn’t be more different from Miller’s frightening work as the diabolical teen in “We Need to Talk about Kevin.”) The young woman who completes their little triangle of blissful misfits is f the perky but damaged Sam, played by “Harry Potter” star Emma Watson (without a trace of a British accent). Also a senior, Sam is Patrick’s stepsister and Charlie’s first serious crush.Maybe they invite Charlie into their inner sanctum a bit too quickly, but there’s an irreverent, playful energy to their antics and a subversive sense of humour that makes you not mind so much.Directed and written by “Perks” novelist Stephen Chbosky, the film follows these characters and their friends through all the rituals of a school year in suburban Pittsburgh. He features heavy use of voiceover early on, as Charlie narrates the letters he writes to a mysterious, unseen recipient, but there’s also great delicacy in the characters’ intimate interactions.Charlie is more unstable and unsure of himself than the average entering freshman following the suicide of his best friend. The death messed him up, and it marked him by association.Maybe Patrick and Sam recognize his outsider status in themselves; in no time, the three are inseparable. The film takes place in a hazy sort of late-80s, early-90s time frame — no one has a cellphone, and mix tapes are a crucial medium for expressing teen angst — which adds to its feeling of universality. The melancholy “Asleep” by The Smiths appears so prominently, it’s practically a character itself.Charlie is very much along for the ride with these crazy older kids, including Mae Whitman as the self-described Buddhist/punk rocker who thrusts her- self upon him and insists she’s his girlfriend. But memories haunt him of something ugly that happened in his childhood, until he finally unravels in a third-act scene that allows Lerman to bust out, show some range and reveal he can really, truly act.“The Perks of Being a Wallflower,” may not do anything groundbreaking, but it tells a familiar story in small, thoughtful ways.“The Perks of Being a Wallflower,” a Summit Entertainment release, is rated PG-13 for mature thematic material, drug and alcohol use, sexual content including references and a fight — all involving teens.103 minutes.Three stars out of four.Motion Picture Association of America rating definition for PG-13: Special parental guidance strongly suggested for children under 13.Some material may be inappropriate for young children. IALK newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com September 21 - September 27, 2012 Page 3 Little Big Town takes a giant step with new album Immmi I E BIG TONN Country Connection Jessie Aulis Many fans have been impatiently expecting this CD since “Pontoon” hit the radio this summer becoming one of the most popular songs during the hot season and the first No.1 For Little Big Town.Tornado is Little Big Town’s fifth album and the attention to the details and creativity for this new release is over the top. From beginning to end, this record offers class, talent and work perfectly done. There are no fillers, just great songs sure to touch your heart. This group can proclaim how they are self-made.In their case it is about the rewards you get when you work hard and the recognition they are finally getting today.Founded in 1998, the group has comprised the same four members since its debut: Karen Fairchild, Kimberly Schlapman, Jimi Westbrook, and Phillip Sweet. The group’s musical style relies mainly on four-part vocal harmonies, with all four members alternating as lead singers.Westbrook and Sweet also play rhythm guitar.Their brand of music is country mixed with a modern funky vibe and sweet melodies, which makes them truly unique.“Pavement Ends” will get you to clap your hands and stomp your feet. This number is about reflecting on how carefree life can sometimes be.Its upbeat sound and fierce singing makes it a very catchy tune.“Pontoon” is a true summer anthem, powerful enough to have you thinking of bikinis and barbecues during winter.Fairchild does a wonderful job, her singing is laid back and she sounds as if she has no care in the world. She makes motor boating sound irresistibly sexy and relaxing. It is important to know that Little Big Town have switched producers to Jay Joyce, who has produced the albums of Capitol label mate Eric Church.Their musical sound is a little different, a little more modern and the change has given their music a whole new freshness.Written by Liz Rose, Hillary Lindsey, and Lori Entertainment Briefs McKenna, the mandolin driven track “Sober” is a sweet ballad about being drunk on love.It might not be upbeat but it sure gets the attention.Kimberly Schlapman takes the lead on this number about wanting to be in love and remaining there. The harmonies provided by the four singers are wonderful.Still, each has his/her own distinctive sound that shines without overshadowing the other. While Phillip Sweet takes lead on “Front Porch Thing," the ladies are just as astounding on the hook. This is a wonderful banjo-led song about sitting on a front porch with an old guitar and relaxing. There’s “Your Side of the Bed,” a sad country ballad, a real masterpiece in itself and beautifully done as a duet and while the tempo is not the same on “Leavin’ In Your Eyes,” it might just be a continuation of the previous number. This song is a quiet ballad about one member of a couple confronting the other about the growing distance between them while the other hopes to rekindle the flame. Most of the numbers on this new album showcase the beauty in each of their individual voices and in their flawless harmonies. The title track, “Tornado," is all about taking a stand and rising up to your man’s surprise.Fairchild sounds very confident and in control here. And that dominant laugh echoing in the background is the highlight of this defiant number.“On Fire Tonight” is indeed a hot number. The girls lead on this track (with the guys adding edge here and there). Both ladies’ vocals blend perfectly together and if you aren’t careful you might end up unable to decide who is singing what part.“Can’t Go Back” is sultry and soulful and surely a fine showcase for the band’s signature harmonies. It offers pure, passionate and flawless singing from each member.Written by Hemby with Kate York and Israeli-born Rosi Golan, this song is another striking ballad. The bluesy rock inspired “Self Made” offers a live concert feel in the opening. This number is a bit over produced.Sometimes we lose the lyrics because of the music.Joyce should’ve kept with the rest of the album and continued with the less-is-more approach. The song is all about relying on your own efforts to achieve your dreams. The satisfaction of gaining success from hard work and determination is much greater. The album ends on a smoother and softer note.“Night Owl” is all about love; staying up waiting for the one you love to return.Their voices blend so well, it is truly beautiful. This new album is really powerful and filled with attitude.Tornado does compare to many of Nashville’s best country releases.Still, the way Little Big Town created this highly emotional album, which can bring your mood as high as they do low, deserves a mention. This record is a giant step for these pioneers of shared leads and incomparable harmonies.‘Rebelle’ shows paradoxes of child soldiers “Rebelle” (“War Witch”), which this week became Canada’s entry in the 2012 best foreign-language Oscar race, highlights a paradox not often seen in films about child soldiers: that while the young rebels are killing they may also going through some intense feelings of love.Kim Nguyen, the film’s Mon- treal-born writer-director, says it’s a duality he witnessed while shooting the harrowing drama last summer in Congo.Transsexuality a metaphor in Laurence Anyways’ In Quebec phenom filmmaker Xavier Dolan’s new film, “Laurence Anyways,” a teacher reveals to his girlfriend of two years that he wants to be a woman. But Dolan notes the drama, which won the best Canadian feature prize at the recent Toronto International Film Festival, represents all couples who struggle with changing identities in their relationship.“Transsexuality is a Cont’d on page 12 2012-2013 Guitarist Buddy Guy worried about the future of the blues, taking matters into own hands By Caryn Rousseau THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Ask Chicago guitar legend Buddy Guy about the future of the blues and he’ll give a depressing — but direct —answer.“It’s scary,” Guy said during an interview upstairs at his club.Buddy Guy’s Legends, in Chicago’s South Loop.“I’m still going to play my music because I love what I’m doing, but we need all the support we can to keep the blues alive.” After five decades in the business, Guy is doing what he can to make sure the genre — and his late contemporaries like Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf and Junior Wells — live on.Earlier this year Guy wrote his autobiography, “When I Left Home,” and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member is mentoring Massachusetts eighth-grader and blues guitarist Quinn Sullivan. And Guy will likely garner attention in December when he receives a 2012 Kennedy Center Honor.“He has expressed his fear that it may be all lost after he’s gone,” said Janice Monti, a sociology professor at Dominican University who studies blues music.“I think as he’s gotten older he’s incredibly aware of this mandate he received from Muddy and the Wolf to keep this all going.” Guy says blues music is ignored in an entertainment marketplace obsessed with young artists.“It’s a tough time for blues because if it was being played, other than satellite radio, on the peak hours, prime time, then somebody would know about it,” Guy said. That’s one of the reasons the 76-year-old Guy took on mentoring 13-year-old Sullivan, who he said plays “as well as Eric Clapton, me and B.B.King.How do you learn that at that age? That’s a natural.” Guy has Sullivan open for him on tour and record on his label.“If you don’t have role models the young people now will not learn how to play,” Guy said. The relationship is a boon for Sullivan, who said he most enjoys trading guitar licks with Guy.“I have a smile on my face every time I’m in his presence,” Sullivan said.“He’s a living legend.I couldn’t ask for more. It’s just a great thing that he’s helping me with my career.” SUMPSES OF THE PAST Armand Desrachers and Carmen Désiel Fonds.Sherbrooke blues clubs at night.Guy eventually earned a spot as a regular session musician at the city’s famed Chess Records and found a mentor in blues musician and producer Willie Dixon.Guy formed a band with Junior Wells and played with The Rolling Stones and the Grateful Dead.Guy developed his own recording career later, with music like the 1991 bestselling record, “Damn Right, I’ve Got the Blues.” Spreading the news of the blues was another reason Guy decided to team with author David Ritz to write his autobiography.“I just want a true story about some of the great people who didn’t write a book and left me with this history of information,” Guy said. The book details his childhood in Louisiana, his move to Chicago 55 years ago and his music career. He said he considers his performance for President Barack Obama at the White House in February with Stones singer Mick Jagger to be the professional pinnacle of his career.Guy successfully prodded the president to sing a few lines of “Sweet Home Chicago.” “To say you played the blues with the president sitting there smiling, that’s one you can’t forget,” Guy said.Besides the hall of fame, Guy earned many accolades later in his career: a half-dozen Grammy Awards, Billboard magazine’s Century Award and the Blues Foundation’s Keeping the Blues Alive Award. When he turned 75 in 2011, the city of Chicago renamed the stretch of Wabash Street in front of his club “Buddy Guy Way.” But it still weighs heavy on Guy that his contemporaries aren’t around to be honoured as well.“Every time I’m interviewed I give credit to those people but they should have got all the awards that I got and they didn’t get them because the blues wasn’t exposed and they were some unknowns,” Guy said.It could also explain why Guy still tours, playing internationally and as many as 16 shows a month.“I don’t know nothing else to do now," Guy said.“I’m enjoying it.I get tired, but you get tired if you’re working in the steel mills, so what’s to complain?” GOOGLE IMAGES f Buddy Guy is trying to save the blues.5 oAne/^J Ouy.1 800 567-AC DM Until there's a cure, there's us. TALK newsroom@shcrbrookerecord.com September 21 - September 27, 2012 Page 5 Canuck chanteuse Sarah McLachlan says she’s trying to write more positive songs By Nick Patch THE CANADIAN PRESS After releasing perhaps her saddest album yet, Sarah McLachlan says she’s trying to write more upbeat material. The three-time Grammy winner says she’s penned five songs for her next disc but plans to devote more time to new material beginning in late fall, with the tentative aim of releasing a new album in 2013.That release date might sound optimistic for the methodical McLachlan — but that’s right in line with the way she’s tried to view the world of late.“I’m really working on being more positive.” the friendly 44-year-old said in a recent interview from Vancouver, where she lives.“(I’m trying) to think about what it is you want in your life, and then putting it out there, and then trying to sort of not look back.“And that’s been tricky, because in my writing, that’s what I do.I look back.I reflect. And I’m really trying to be more forward-thinking in my writing.” McLachlan’s effort to let a little more light into her songwriting comes after arguably her bleakest album yet, 2010’s “Laws of Illusion.” That sad, lovelorn record was released two years after McLachlan split with drummer Ashwin Sood, her husband of 11 years with whom she shares two daughters. The album, which opened at No.2 on the Canadian chart, found McLachlan probing the remains of her relationship and trying to move forward."I went through some (crap),” she says now with a laugh as she casts her mind back to that period.“There was a lot of real heartfelt stuff on there. But you know, there is on every record. And I think they are all sort of postcards of where I am emotionally. And my outlook is really very positive, and I’m ever hopeful. So I’m really trying to figure out a way to interject more of that into the music.“I don't know if I’ll succeed.” And yet she knows that if she gets too upbeat, fans who flock to her fluttering vocals for a dose of harmonious heartbreak could be, well, heartbroken.“Yeah, like: ‘Oh my God, she’s gone on Prozac,”’ said McLachlan, who is scheduled to perform at Toronto's Massey Hall on Thursday alongside Toronto-bred rapper K’naan.“Believe me, there’s still going to be some good gut-wrenchers.Because that’s my happy place.” The “Building a Mystery” songwriter will be feted this weekend when she receives a star on the Canada’s Walk of Fame alongside fellow inductees Randy Bachman, former CFLer Russ Jackson and late funnyman Phil Hartman. When she heard about the plans, McLachlan had a typically Canadian reaction: modesty.“1 was honoured.A little embarrassed,” she said, chuckling.“I’m such a proud Canadian. So all these things, they’re pomp and circumstance but they’re very sweet and I love that I’m sharing the space with so many amazing Canadians.” And she concedes that such honours — even if she’s had a number of them over the years — are always thrilling.“I’m a very forward-thinking person -1 spend very little time thinking about what’s happened in the past,” she said.“When these kind of events occur, I’m often sitting there .listening to people rattle off all the things I’ve done and I’m like, ’Wow! I forgot about that.Yeah!’ “It’s kind of cool.I’ve had a 25-year career and it’s so far above and beyond exceeded any ideas that I ever had about GOOGLE IMAGES what Td achieve.” But while McLachlan eventually plans to show off her concrete star to her daughters, she won’t bring them along for the busy weekend of events.“I wouldn’t be able to .I would be too frantic,” she said.“I have a very hard time being mom and working me at the same time.“I’d end up in the fetal position,” she added, laughing.Jimmy Kimmel rolls out red carpet for Emmy Awards, plans prank for Sunday’s show By DerrikJ.Lang THE ASSOCIATED PRESS After rolling out the red carpet Wednesday morning in anticipation of Sunday’s Emmy ceremony, host Jimmy Kimmel warned he’s planning a prank on folks not watching the show.“I have an idea for a prank, and if it goes well, will be great,” the first-time Emmy host teased after ceremoniously unraveling the red carpet.“If it goes badly, it won’t be so great.I think it will go well.If you’re watching, you’ll be in on it.If you’re not, you might get caught up in the prank.” Kimmel, whose “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” received its first nomination for outstanding variety series this year, is looking forward to seeing what TV stars look like out of costume Sunday.“There’s certain shows you watch, like ‘Game of Thrones’ for instance, and you see these people in their medieval fantasy garb,” Kimmel said.“I don’t know what these people look like in real life.I’m kind of anxious about it.I want to see the kid who breast feeds his mother. That’s who I want to meet most of all.” For the fifth year, the show will be held at the Nokia Theatre in downtown Los Angeles. The massive red carpet -more like a red sidewalk, really — will canvass the entire plaza across the street from the Staples Center for Sunday’s TV extravaganza.“I think that you’re going to see a fresh point of view on the television industry, the year in television and some trends in television, which is going to be coming from Jimmy Kimmel,” said Emmy executive producer Don Mischer.“I think his point of view is unique and quite distinctive. There vyill be irreverence and humour - a lot of humour.” Kimmel said the most difficult thing about emceeing the 64th annual Prime- time Emmys is juggling hosting duties with his day job.“There’s a lot of work to be done,” Kimmel said.“I’ve been up very late working on this stuff. You have to write every presenter intro, and then the presenters change or the combinations change, and then you have to change those things. What I’m trying to say is this is a real pain.” Inside the Nokia Theatre, stagehands were hard at work on the sweeping art deco-style set.The stage has been accented with silver tiles and features a voluminous circular screen hanging above several curved walls that can double as screens.Place cards on the chairs in front of the stage’s glittery silver stairs illustrated that Tiny Fey, Clive Owen and “Modern Family” stars Ed O’Neil, Sofia Vergara and "fy Burrell will have the best Cont’d on page 12 Page 6 September 21 -
