tomatoes ripen on shoulder-high vines potted in old olive-oil containers; and loose, lacy, fruit-laden grapevines wind their way up wrought-iron staircases, preferring shade and the promise of homemade wine."If you don't have room, you make it,” counsels Giovanni Matera, whose own vegetable garden long ago outgrew the confines of his Millen Street back yard.Cucumber vines would take up too much room if left to trail along the ground. So Matera lets them amble up the fig tree in the middle of his back yard. So, too, with zucchini vines, whose flowers, dipped in batter and deep-fried, are family favourites.Along the chain-link fence grow spaghetti beans that will get more than a foot long, which Matera's wife, Anna Durante, blanches and then sautes briefly in olive oil with oregano, a drop of red-wine vinegar and a pinch of salt.Matera maximizes his tomato yield by growing a tall variety of San Marzano Italian plum tomato, which grows to 10 or 12 feet high tied to even taller stakes, as well as lower-growing varieties. They share space in the gardens he has carved out in the grassy laneway behind his house and in the vacant city-owned lot at the end of his street.“My wife says I give her too much work, but I just love being out here.It is my passion from April until November,” Matera says, stopping to snap a few flat beans for supper. He fertilizes with sheep manure every spring and waters profusely.Domenico Ciambella also douses his vegetable garden with a homemade “manure tea,” a thick, black blend of water and the manure he hauls home in his truck every few weeks from a friend’s rabbit farm in Saint-Isidore.Last year, one of his zucchinis grew to 1.3 metres long.Birds and squirrels are kept at bay by a series of bells, chimes and dangling aluminum pie plates.“If you have a back deck or a wire fence, you can grow a trellis of runner beans,” writes Carlotta Hacker inGardening with Gusto, a Canadian vegetable-gardening handbook. For beginners, she recommends scarlet runner beans, which grow quickly and bear prolific red flowers that attract hummingbirds before going on to produce delicious green beans.“Melons can be grown on a deck, climbing up the steps or planted in a tub in a sunny corner,” Hacker says.Marie Quinn, co-owner of La Ferme Quinn in Notre-Dame-de-l’kle-Perrot, says many fruits and vegetables benefit from the increased air that circulates around them when their vines are propped up.As a result, there's much less chance of the plant developing mould or fungus.Only heavy vegetables such as pumpkins and large zucchinis are too heavy to grow vertically, she says.Beans and peas are actually easier to harvest when grown vertically rather than horizontally.“You pick at your own height rather than at ground level,” she said.“It’s cleaner and tidier, too.” Children, especially, love harvesting beans from under and around a tepee fashioned of sticks or bamboo poles that’s overgrown with pole beans.“And a tomato that hasn’t touched the ground ripens very nicely and evenly,” Quinn says.“And it is out of reach of the slugs, which love the sweet taste of tomatoes." now I feel like a part of my body has been rejoined to the rest — I feel more complete.” Todd Adams, who plays Ted Dykstra, is also excited about this production.“This is my first time in the show,” he said.“1 saw it in Buffalo and I thought it was wonderful. It helps that Tom has done it for a long time. It’s a bit strange playing Ted Dykstra, especially with the original director, Andy McKim, directing this production. But I am not doing an impersonation -1 don’t have to be Ted.” Unlike Frey, Adams studied voice at college.A native of Galveston, Texas, he ended up doing a Master’s at the Juilliard School of Music in New York.Tlie show is unusual in that it combines classical music and comedy. It closes with the Bach D Minor Concerto, and includes bits of material that most students learn as they study the piano. The music is not exclusively classical however, and, as Frey points out, the piano is just the McGuffin’ — it’s really about trying to do things excellently. Two Pianos runs until Aug.26.For tickets or more information call (819) 842-2431.4 COURTESY PIGGERY THEATRE Theatre comes to life in Stanstead By Tricia Davidson Record Correspondent From scorching singing sets to dazzling dancing numbers, the Caribbean adaptation of the fairy tale The Little Mermaid comes to life in the musical theatre piece.Once On This Island at Haskell Opera House in Stanstead this weekend.Opening tonight at 7:30 p.m„ the production is based on the novel My Love, My Love by Rosa Guy, with musical numbers written by the Tony Award winning Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty.“There is very little dialogue, it’s mostly singing,” explained Betty Waters, Executive Producer of QNEK Productions, who produce the play.“It's colourful, and suited to all ages." and it paid.Octaves excellent.Bass too heavy in one place.Good style.Excellent performance.” Moving on: Toronto and beyond It was on to Toronto in 1939, for a BA.(Hon.Mus.) at the University of Toronto, and a portion of fame in the big city.Howard inaugurated a student recital series in 1940, and assumed a major role in the Hart House Glee Club, as performer and as accompanist to the choir and various soloists. In the latter role, one cannot imagine a more sympathetic support.A Varsity review of 1940 reads: “Howard Brown, the last on the program, was the really worthwhile musician of the evening. His accompaniments for B.J.proved, at times, more interesting than the singer.” After he completed his B.A.in 1943, the war intervened.Pte.Brown was stationed back in London, and seems to have contributed to the war effort mainly through concert-giving.While featured occasionally as soloist, he often shared the spotlight with Margaret Bach: “Piano Duo Delights in Concert for Troops” reads a Free Press headline.By the next year it was Cpl.Brown doing the entertaining. After the war he returned to Toronto to complete a Mus.Bach., and then proceeded to the Senior School of the Royal Conservatory. Here he studied with the formidable Lubka Kolessa, definitely one of the old school, who must be credited with creating the mature musician. In March of 1948, he performed the Liszt Totentanz with the Conservatory Symphony Orchestra. The Globe and Mail critic hailed his “high proficiency, brilliancy and clear-thinking".In a recital of Kolessa students a few months later.Brown’s playing of the Brahms B-flat Concerto was called “the most urbane, most polished, of the three student performances. There was a very smooth rapprochement in the brilliant playing of pupil and teacher”.After his graduation in 1949, Brown was appointed to the Halifax Conservatory of Music, and the next year moved to Mount Allison, first as head of the Piano Department, and from 1953 to 1967 as Chairman of the Music Department. His concert career reached a zenith early in this period - Chopin.Liszt, Beethoven, Ravel, Mendelssohn, Debussy. He worked extensively with soprano Audrey Farnell, playing with her before Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip in 1951.He also performed concertos with the Halifax Symphonette, the Halifax Symphony, and the New Brunswick Symphony.Additionally, he joined with Stanley Saunders and Rodney McLeod to form the Mount Allison University Trio.Arriving in the Townships Alas, Brown would suffer the fate of so many of our fine performers who find themselves called to fill the many gaps in our musical landscape — too many things to do.This was already a problem in his later years at Mount Allison, and certainly was the case when in 1967 he arrived at Bishop’s, to create the Department of Music, and provide a focus for musical life in the area.Howard discovered that Lennoxville was (as it remains) a curious town that really needs a Stephen' Leacock or Robertson Davies to do it justice. The cast of locals he would meet included the High School band teacher, the Gilbert and Sullivan Society, a brilliant musical amateur in poet Ralph Gustafson, a cultured priest from Sherbrooke, the odd musician from Bishop’s College School, enthusiastic local church musicians, an international concert pianist, and several members of Bishop’s own mildly-eccentric faculty.Over the years, this group of friends, colleagues, and fellow travellers gathered around him, and together they made music happen. On campus he found many interested colleagues - but to this day no one outside the music sphere really understands how such a small department COURTESY ANDREW MCDONALD As the years progressed, the opportunity to hear Brown's mastery on the piano became less frequent.can do such wonderful things.Making a Difference Although Music degrees had been given out by Bishop's for about 60 years, until 1945 there had never actually been a Music Professor on campus.Brown was the first, and only, one and he would devote his life to the students, and to the University.Brown designed the academic program and taught pretty well every course. He conducted musicians through masterpieces great and small. He faced large classes, filled with oversized members of the Gaiters football team, to whom he explained the intricacies of a Beethoven sonata, the wonders of a Bach cantata, or the thrill of a Verdi opera. For 16 years, he passed on his own love of music to all and sundry, with the hopes that for some, anyway, the seed would be planted. And it was, more often than he imagined. He succeeded in establishing a Music Minor, then a Music Major, and in the end he convinced a skeptical University that Music truly belongs with the Liberal Arts.Even after his retirement, Brown was made Professor Emeritus, and remained a central figure in the local musical world, whether from his generous support of the Music Department and of its students, from his faithful attendance at virtually all musical events in the region, or from his expertise and wisdom, called upon from time to time. His mere presence at a concert was enough to inspire the musicians and make them secure in the knowledge that a literate and supportive member was in the audience. On May 4 of this year Brown became Dr.Brown when Bishop’s bestowed upon him the degree of Doctor of Civil Law, publicly acknowledging his many achievements.Howard Brown passed away peacefully on July 11 in Sherbrooke. For the first time in its history, the Department of Music will not be welcoming back its founder, and Bishop's, Lennoxville and all of Canada will be a lesser place for this sad event.A memorial service will be held Sat urday Aug.11.2001, 2 p.m.at Plymouth Trinity United Church in Sherbrooke.- Submitted by Andrew McDonald TALK OF THE'EjpnshipS — ¦¦ —THE» .1 ______RECORD_________ August 10-August 16, 2001 page 5 Sounds to soothe the savage beast CD Reviews Aaliyah needs to ‘dust herself off and try again’ V i * $ Aayliyah Self-titled (Background Records) Perhaps one of the most popular and promising female artists to hit the R&B scene in recent years, it’s disappointing that Aaliyah's latest album fails to deliver even one potential hit in its 15 tracks. The singer/actress first tasted international stardom last summer with her motion picture debut, staring opposite Jet Li in Rome Must Die.Added to her growing resume was the subsequent hit single ‘Try Again’ on the picture’s featured soundtrack.Still, it was more thap that — other singles like 'Come Back in One Piece’ and Are You Feeling Me?’ reeked of a maturity that made her popular, and a youthful spark that made her famous. Now, however, the “wanna-be-diva” is all about attitude and not enough about quality — her singles are repetitive to the point that they’re boring (‘Rock the Boat’, ’More than a Woman’) and slow enough to put one to sleep ( T Care 4 U', ’Never No More’).I tried listening to it on a road trip with a coworker, at work and even in the secluded environment of my den — the results were the same: I could lock myself up in a box and listen to this album for all that mattered, it’s the album that should never see the light of day.-J.Z.Toya Self-titled (Arista Records) If you track music phenomena through the years, it’s painfully obvious that short-lived “crazes” can dominate the music industry at any given time.Last summer, it was the Brittney Spears/Christina Aguileira duo; before that, boy bands NSync and the Backstreet Boys owned concert and album sales world wide. Now, ever since J-Lo and Janet have re-emerged with new albums, artists such as Toya are jumping on the bandwagon with their own version of solo, soul female R&B.Check out this little rap from the track ‘Fiasco’: “1 was in love wit (not misspelled) him since I was 12.By 14 I was catchin’ hell.He was the star of the football team.Other girls wanted to fulfill his dreams.” Songs like this are, obviously, more prone to be heard on soundtracks for the American Pie’s and the Ten Things 1 Hate About You type flicks — not the diva dished out by the heavyweights in the class.Regardless, Toya tries, and she somewhat delivers with a better than average product. She is an imitator and not a competitor to the aformen-tioned already established female R&B stars.-A.M.Usher 8701 (Artista Records) While watching last year's summer hit movie She’s All That the other day, I quickly realized two things.First, not only should Usher never be allowed to act as a high-school DJ ever again, but he should also never be allowed to act in a movie ever again! Despite his lackluster acting skills, however, his latest album, 8701, is exactly what one would expect from the young rap artist. His distinction lies in mixing a jagged pop with a “made-for- tv” rap; although it has been done a thousand times over, Usher does it best.As for his audience, it’s clear that the dozen or so pictures of him with his shirt off in the album’s jacket is not geared toward a male audience between the ages of 18-24.Nevertheless, it’s not hard to recognize his developing stardom, musically that is.While the track ‘U Remind Me’ is a throwback to his prior hits, T Can’t Let U Go’ is a more diverse rap single, and ‘How Do I Say’ develops into a delicate ballad that would even make Brian McKnight blush.8701 is but a step in Usher’s climbing career, and is exactly what his audience would expect from him.-J.Z.Dave Navarro Trust No One (Capitol Records) Cacophonous sounds reminiscent of ‘90s alternative/grunge rock orally assail on Dave Navarro's first solo album.Upon first listening to the disc.it sounds familiar. The second and third time around, however, it becomes clear that Navarro, former guitarist for Jane's Addiction and Red Hot Chili Peppers, trusts the grunge sound.Highlighting the album, however, is Brendan O'Brien, who contributes on one track, while mixing the entire score.O’Brien is perhaps best known as the producer of several Stone Temple Pilots albums. His influence undoubtedly comes across both musically and vocally in Trust No One, as Navarro mirrors the popular alternative band. Most tracks on the album are moderate in tempo and obvious elements of grunge.‘Everything’ and ‘Not For Nothing’ are harder, louder tunes, with metal and techno-industrial tinges respectively.‘Venus In Furs’ is a mellow Lou Reed cover, and ‘Slow Motion Sickness’ ends the album on a pleasantly calm note.-T.D.Cooldown Amazonia (Spark Records) Cooldown heats it up with their recently released album ‘Amazonia’, a phenomenal compilation of electronic pop tracks amid a montage of cool techno-pop singles.Better described as Sneaker Pimps meets TLC, Cooldown is still unique in that it combines their mellow underground sounds with resounding rave mixes. If it can catch on — which is easier said than done in the hard-fought industry of electronic pop — Cooldown has all the tools to make a big name for themselves. The lyrics are catchy, the backbeats are inviting and the remixes on several tracks, including the title track Amazonia’, are spectacular.Cooldown — who are produced under the local Spark Records label — may not be a household name yet, but it will come as no surprise when their tracks are spinning soon in clubs and raves across the nation.-J.z.Arts & Crafts Show The Piggery's 18th annual show! One of the many featured artists over the weekend include Weedon’s own Jeannine Bourret, who said her painting are something that has come more naturally to her then anything else.“I have been painting for the last 30 years. My mother was an artist so it comes naturally,” said Bourret, who is best known for her acrylic on canvas work and her copper etchings.“1 have had my work exhibited in the Abbe of St.Paul and is now on show with Jeannine Blais in North Hatley, and have also taken orders for special projects, but I would much rather create sculptures on my own." Meanwhile, sculptor Léger Robert from Bishopton takes pride in the personal touch that he brings to every item.“I recently started a wooden duck out of sumac, and was very pleased with the results. The grain is really beautihil," he said.“I also do five-dimensional murals.” Robert’s work is unique by the variety of wood he uses.Prior to Dudswell, he has also recently had a showing at Uplands Museum in Lennoxville.Lynda Schneider-Granatstein, who is also a featured painter at this weekend’s symposium, is an accredited Canadian artist who has had her work displayed in 10 galleries across Canada. She also guest lectures at McGill and Concordia Universities.Through her presentations, Schneider-Granatstein tries to explain the psychology of the creativity behind her work.Through her education as a trained psychologist, her interest in the Freudian theory of id/ego/super ego has evolved into her work of today.“1 seem to thrive on the challenging pressure involved with being an artist," Schneider-Granatstein said.“A professional artist is disciplined and passionate about his or her work.My primary interest is in female nudes — in an introspective way.All the props I use are something related to my life; clothes that my Grandmother wore, flowers from family gardens, etc.I believe that we are the sum of our experiences." You’re an American star.People are comfortable with the way you talk and the way you look, and now you’re going to jolt them with something like this?’ And I said: Tm an actor first and as an actor I need to challenge myself and grow.I think 1 deserve to do this - so I’m doing it!’ “ Now that Captain Corelli’s Mandolin is arriving in North American theatres Aug.17, Cage is waiting to see whether the warnings were justified.“They may be right," he sighs.“It may be too alarming for people.I just don’t know." What Cage does know is that his gamble paid off in Britain, where the film version of Louis de Bernieres' 1994 novel opened in May.The book was already an enormous U.K.success, selling the equivalent of one copy for every 20 British households. The movie is a runaway hit there as well, outperforming every other Cage title released in Britain so far.Cage stresses that North America is a different market. But he can also console himself with the knowledge that this isn’t the first time he’s been accused of risking his career by changing his image. It happened five years ago when he decided to see if he could establish his credentials as an action hero by doing The Rock for blood-and-guts producer Jerry Bruckheimer. That gamble was a success. It’s 9:30 on a sunny California morning and Cage, one of the most thoughtful and introspective of actors, is sitting in a beach house overlooking the crashing foam of the Pacific and discussing his complicated attitude towards the profession of acting. In his silk shirt and trendy leather jeans, he looks like your typical laid-back Hollywood star, but he doesn’t sound like one as he ponders his onscreen presence - or possibly his lack of one.“I like all kinds of genres and all kinds of characters.I never want to be trapped in one type or one persona.Yet, the thing is there is a kind of magic to having a persona, and 1 never really had one.I always thought my image was that I didn’t have an image: that I was creating different characters, but that I was imageless." “I don’t want to become calcified in any form of filmmaking.I just want to stay free and in that way stay fresh as an actor.I see myself very much as a student of acting and I want to continue growing.Corelli was a chance for me to grow because I’d never done a character like that with an accent.I’d never been in that time period before.I’d never had to play an instrument. It was all pushing me a little further — and hopefully I would learn something." Director John Madden says one of the reasons Cage has so much power on the screen is his ability to convey “old-fashioned decency, dignity and a sense of honour." Cage's character of Captain Corelli, a conscripted officer in the Italian army oc- cupying this idyllic Greek island, forms one corner of the film’s love triangle.Another is provided by Penelope Cruz in the role of the strong-willed daughter of the village doctor -a young woman who initially resists him and then ends up loving him.The third corner is supplied by Christian Bale as the young fisherman and resistance fighter to whom she is engaged. The story unfolds against a background of true history, climaxing with the notorious massacre of the Italian army by invading German forces.Cage sees his character as “a bon vivant who’s not really interested in fighting or battles. His interests are music and wine and getting the most out of life, but the problem is he's a little bit ignorant. He’s naive and unaware, so when the tragedy happens and the Germans begin to massacre all the Italian soldiers on the island, it’s a wakeup call from hell for him." Cage knows he may get flak for speaking accented English in the film, but he says there are conventions which had to be observed when making an English-language film set in a place where the characters are speaking Greek, Italian and German. In the case of the character of Captain Corelli, he needed to sound different from the islanders - but had Cage spoken with his normal American accent or in a broken Italian accent, either approach would have stood out like a sore thumb.“We needed a very elegant European sound which is not the same sound as you get from an Italian-American speaking broken English or an immigrant Italian trying to speak English.” Cage also had to learn to play the mandolin, although he says he’s the most non-musical member of his family.“I learned it by rote - the four or five songs they wanted me to play.I did them over and over until I was so sick of them that after I finished the movie I put the mandolin down and never want to play it again!” Cinema 4204, boul, Bertrand-Fabi MOVie INFO S2I-9999 SHOWTIMES EFFECTIVE AUGUST 10 AUGUSTJ»_______________ IE JOURNAL 0 UN£ PRINCESSE (G) Daily 12,20 IS,25.IB 20.eiH,'I American Muscle.(N) 6:00 AM (X) Global Business People B House of Mouse ID Neverending Story f9 Body Tech 23 Caillou EB World at Large (Part 3 of 10) l l'l'l Seven Faces of Robert Lepage t«ÙI,'t CNN International I0LM Sea: The Last Frontier EE3 International Newsfirst Pet Friends t:1‘il Matin express i'u:i Cross Currents Qfl Dumb Bunnies rm Sportsdesk 6:30 AM (33 Animal Rescue GO Ron Hazelton's House Calls B House of Mouse ID Big Garage f9 Bunch of Munsch 23 Clifford the Big Red Dog EB That Money Show PT7T71 Travel Now (Part 2 of 2) Living Sea m News TV: French Canada ifm Gentle Doctor: Veterinary Medicine rTTTI Rainmakers II OZ) Anatole 7:00 AM B Movie * * * “Destry Rides Again” (1939, Western) A mild-mannered lawman catches the eye of a saloon girt.B (1:28) Infopublicité B (1:08) Arrest & Trial ® Cinéma "L'Homme orchestre" (1970, Comédie) 0) Suddenly Susan 23 Charlie Rose rm Movie * * » “Revenge" (1990, Drama) A former Navy pilot romances a killer's seductive wife.CNN Tonight ‘ Wild Discovery “Lords of the Lake" International Newsfirst _Llfe’s Moving Stories ______ Movie * * “A Glass of Rage" (1999, Drama) An erotic getaway turns into a psy-chosexual nightmare.QQ Great Books: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (33 Little Bear CS Today B Salut, bonjour!
