how systems can oppress people, even educational systems, even well-intended systems, like a democracy,” said Harries.“If you’re totally faithful to that system you can ignore the human element.I think it’s a play that’s deeply humane in that way; it really asks us to look at the capabilities of every individual and never discount somebody as ‘they’re low class or they’re just a flaw.’ I think ThMtre FRIDAY $3.50 MATINEES TUES & WED.$4.50 ENGLISH PATIENT Fri., Sat., Sun., Mon., Tues., Wed., Thurs.6:20 p.m.| For info: 263-5900 - ¦ ¦ - 'v-: | it’s the humanitarianism of the play that really appeals to me and 1 think it’s something that can speak to any audience but particularly the university audience where people are being evaluated all the time by society.” Sabrina Marzari, a second-year German major and drama minor student who plays the part of Governor Arthur Philips, had to overcome the challenge of gender reversal with her role.“I hope I do it justice,” said the petite Marzari.“My character is very philosophical. He likes to lecture a lot and 1 despise philosophy.I’ve got this whole scene where he’s going on about Socrates and Plato; 1 had to research him a lot.” Caitland Ellis, an English major and drama minor, plays the part of a prostitute convict named Duckling.“My character is extremely complex.1 wasn’t typecast at all,” Ellis declared.“A hard thing was the fact that she is a whore; I use sexual implications, that’s my tool. That was a hard thing for me to get used to.” The actors seem to agree their vision of the play’s theme — that education is the key to all civilization and not the brutality Australia’s convict-settlers underwent — is a correct one. However, Marc Edmunds, who portrays the play’s lone aboriginal character, said Australia would not be able to boast its current strengths if its history had been different.“Part of historical Australia is that it was a penal colony”, said Edmunds, originally from Namibia.“I think Australia would be different today if they had taken on this (educational) mentality.Whether it would have succeeded or not, I don’t know. The mentality that was used, the brutal force and the absolute extermination of the aboriginal population that took place, it was genocide gone wild.I don’t know that it would be weaker, (perhaps) strong in different ways.” Edmunds said his character wears a tuxedo throughout the play and provides the audience with a historical perspective.“The idea is that Aboriginal Australians were living very quiet lives without the influence of so-called civilization and they didn’t need all the intrusion from the so-called white civilizers who were supposed to be bringing them culture and civilization,” said Edmunds.“But the settlers themselves were actually more barbaric, uncivilized and savage.Wearing a tux is symbolic of the fact that I’m more sophisticated than they are since they all wear rags because PERRY BEATON Caitland Ellis and Drew Aaslepp are featured in Timberlake Wertenbaker's Our Country’s Good, a play about Australia's first settlers and their quest for civilization.they’re criminals and marine officers. If you listen to what I have to say and if you see me in context with the rest of the play you can see that it’s not just a superficial ‘stick-a-badge-on-me type of deal”, I think it has merit.” The actors enthusiastically described the effects the play has had on their approach to theatre.“I have gone beyond limits that I’ve had for myself where I’d go ‘Oh I couldn’t do that’,” said Ellis.“I didn’t think that I could cry and actually feel exactly what my character was feeling.” “In essence the play portrays a great variety of characters and people who in- habited Australia at the time,” added Edmunds.“I think what the playwright is trying to say, or the way we’ve interpreted it, is fairly liberal in a sense and advocates education as opposed to hanging and flogging. At the same time it doesn’t pretend that the white settlers were the only important people in Australia." April 4-10, 1997 page 3 Townships w eek THE' Talk of the Townships The strangest thing has been happening lately My three year-old son suddenly insists on dressing himself and getting his own breakfast in the morning. He doesn’t resist as much when it’s time to get ready for daycare and even puts on his own snowsuit when it’s time to leave. He’s become incredibly verbal, able to tell me what’s wrong, what he’d like to do, and exactly how his day went. But that’s not what’s strange. No, the strange thing is the way I seem to mourn his lack of dependence upon me.That’s right. The same mother who, six months ago, whined to her son, “Come on, you can put your underwear on by yourself, can’t you?” is now hovering over her son like a vulture, just waiting to swoop down and help him with something.I hover over him while he’s dressing himself, wringing my hands in anticipation of the moment when I’ll have to help him with the zipper on his pants. And if he manages to do it all alone, I feel gypped and proud all at the same time I praise my kids when they make their beds, but as soon as they leave the room I spend a few minutes straightening, fluffing, and creasing the sheets and comforters - not so much because the bed needs it, ________ but because I need it.Go figure.I just can’t get used to it.It’s like a strange episode of The Twilight Zone when I see my kids picking up their toys without being asked, or making their beds because they “felt like it” or playing together nicely without having to intervene and settle a single argument. My five year-old daughter has been independent for a long time now, but 1 wasn’t prepared for my son to become self-sufficient so suddenly.1 swear, one day he was throwing a tantrum when it was time to go to bed.The next day he was calmly picking out a bedtime book and climbing under the sheets without my having to say a single word.LINDA’S PLAYGROUND Linda Galeazzi Beware of charismatic cult leaders “La foi consiste à croire ce que la raison ne croit pas.” Voltaire WHO’S WHO At this writing, the news is of a ‘cult of computer pro- - grammers’ committing mass ritual suicide near San Diego.Last week’s news was of the Order of the Solar Temple doing much the same at St.Casimir, Quebec. Most of us are dumbfounded. But it’s not that unusual, given a time of rapid, concentrated change that leaves people disoriented, alienated, and isolated. If a charismatic leader appears with a powerful millenarian ideology, a whole nation can destroy itself as happened to the Xhosa of South Africa in 1856-57.The Xhosa culture and economy was built on cattle.Favourite animals were treated as pets and were trained to be ridden into battle.Their proudest proverb was “Cattle are the race, they being dead, the race dies.” But in 1856 a minor seer named Mhalikaza began preaching that the Xhosa must slaughter all their cattle, stop cultivating the land, destroy all food stores, and then the dead would return to life. The whites would be driven from South Africa, new herds of cattle would appear, and the Xhosa would flourish once more. The people believed, did as instructed, and starved by tens of thousands.Between January and December of 1857, the population fell from 105,000 to 37,500 and has never recovered.Almost exactly the same tragedy befell the Indians of the northern plains Tadeusz Letarte Wow.Wonderful.Great.So why do I feel so sad?The feeling that I’m not needed as much as before has slowly subsided. After all, I tell myself that I still do a lot of things for him _______ that I used to, and he’s not at the point yet where he’s pulling away and cringing when I show him some affection.I can’t even contemplate the day when that happens. In the meantime, I’m dealing with his newfound independence better than I thought I would.Okay, I still hover over him; he still swats me away like an annoying fly every once in a while.I still have my hands ready to help when he’s doing some task on his own.He still responds with a cry of “I can do it, I can do it, I can do it!” But I’m proud to say that I’m learning to resist the urge to fix things when he does something less than perfectly. For example, my son got ready for a walk the other day with absolutely no help from me.Proud as a peacock and with an exclamation of “Look, Mom, I dressed myself!” he came outside with his t-shirt on inside-out, his coat on upside down, and his boots untied. My initial reaction was to undress and redress him, but I didn’t.I helped him put his jacket on properly - after all, it was nippy out - but I resisted the urge to completely undo everything he’d done just so I could make myself feel better. And later, when a friend came over and commented on the fact that my son’s shirt was inside out, I indignantly commented that he’d gotten dressed all by himself and that it didn’t matter if it wasn’t quite right. And I’m finally learning to take my own advice.after 1890 when Wovoka, the Paiute Messiah, claiming to be Christ reborn on earth, created the Ghost Dance religion. If the people danced the Ghost Dance, they’d rise up into the skies and remain suspended there while a new earth appeared below with great herds of wild horses and buffalo. Then they would be set down amid their risen ancestors and drive the whites from their territory.Ghost shirts with magic markings would render the Bluecoats’ bullets harmless.Same with the MajiMaji who rose against their German masters in Tanganyika when their prophet Kinjikitile assured them his charms turned bullets to water.Same with the Pai Maire in New Zealand, Burma, Java, India, and Tanzania when prophets appeared to urge rebellion against colonial might. And it happened right here in the Townships in the 1840s when Rev.William Miller preached the End of the World and persuaded thousands of Townshippers to neglect their farms, close businesses, and give away all they had. When nothing happened, they were in very real difficulties, but remained faithful enough to organize themselves into the Advent Christian Church and the Seventh Day Adventists.A splinter group of Adventists became followers of David Koresh near Waco, Texas, and everyone knows what happened there in 1993.Given enough stress and a charismatic leader, we could all follow him over the cliff.Avoid crowds! Saturday Playing live is what Big Sugar is all about im mm j Hot Chicago blues By Paul Cherry Sherbrooke Some would travel the road to hell for rock & roll but if that means staying at flea bag motels along the way, leave Big Sugar’s Gordie Johnson out.Johnson is the frontman of the Canadian band which rolls into Sherbrooke on Saturday at the Granada Theatre. The show is just one of many for the band that never seems to stop touring.Big Sugar has been playing every nook and cranny of Canada since last summer and after they cover the Great White North there are also plans in the works for a tour of the US and England. But forget about images of the up and coming band travelling cross-country in a beat up station wagon.“We’ve always been able to live comfortably through touring” said Johnson.“1 wouldn’t do it if we couldn’t.Even when I was organizing our tour dates myself, I’d set up the show and if we found out we had to stay in a crappy hotel room we’d get in our car and leave.” Johnson said lie’s committed to his music but that there has to be a little give and take involved.“I wouldn’t go through that for anybody,” he said.“We’re trying to make our living and when you’re treated Hot Chicago band Mississippi Heat will bring their own brand of blues to the Cafe' du Palais in downtown Sherbrooke Wednesday, April 9, at 10 p.m.Formed in 1992 by musician Pierre Larocque, the group brings 140 collective years of experience to their performances and more than 100 recordings.Aside from having a solid international reputation, Mississippi Heat has toured Quebec extensively and performed at the Montreal Jazz Festival. The group is coming to the Townships to promote its third album, Thunder In My Heart.Tickets for this crème de la crème of blues acts cost $8 and will be available at the door on the night of the performance.Big Sugar was recently nominated for a Juno award but walked away empty-handed.“It’s flattering but awards like that don’t really matter. If they gave out cars, then I would concern myself with whether we won or not" says the band’s frontman Gordie Johnson.right, you reward the people organizing the show by playing better music for them.” When asked how much longer he expects the band will be touring, Johnson lowered his voice a few octaves and said: “a long time” but he also said playing live is what Big Sugar is all about.“That’s what we do.Being in the studio and making albums is what we do to perpetuate the other part of it all which is touring,” he said.Johnson has been playing dates since the late 80s when Big Sugar, or a variation of it, backed up Molly Johnson (who was later the lead singer of the Infidels and no relation to Gordie) on Toronto’s Queen Street.Since then, Johnson and Kelly Hoppe, who plays a variety of instruments on Hemivision, have used different combinations of musicians on bass and drums for three different albums and an E.P.For Hemivision, the line up includes drummer Paul Brennan who has played for the Odds and Mae Moore’s band and bassist Gary Lowe. The new additions lend a different sound to Hemivision that catches anyone familiar with Big Sugar’s previous efforts off guard. The first single “Digging a Hole” has been getting steady airplay on rock oriented radio and the band was nominated for a Juno but walked away from the awards show empty-handed, not a big deal for Johnson.“It’s flattering but awards like that don’t really matter for anything. If you’re in a category with someone like Shania Twain you know who’s going to win,” he said.“If they started to give out cars with those awards, that’s when I might start concerning myself with whether we win one or not.” Five-Hundred Pounds, their previous album now sounds light.Hemivision takes one step harder from the blues and even deviates into ska with newcomer Lowe laying down a solid reggae foundation on a few songs.Despite the line up changes Johnson said it causes no problem when getting ready to record.“By the time I’m ready to record, I’ve got the album written in my head,” he said.“I’m not into that flaky, experimental stuff where you waste a lot of studio time and waste the record company’s money.” Hemivision moves the band further from its blues roots and closer into the pool of young bands like Live or Bush X.Johnson said there was never a conscious decision made to give Big Sugar a harder edge.“It’s not as if the band was like Rip Van Winkle and suddenly woke up headed into the studio with a revelation,” he said.“I think our sound has evolved. We change members or maybe I’ll blow an amp and switch to another sound. But we’ve never actually said ‘let’s change our sound'.” Johnson also resents having labels stuck on the band that could peg it in the future.“We don’t consider ourselves a blues band,” he said.“Tie same way we don’t consider ourselves a reggae band even though Gary will slip in some reggae bass lines. We really don’t like defining ourselves along those lines.I really just like writing songs.” When Johnson talks, it’s in long drawn out sentences that give you the impression he is from someplace along the Mississippi and not Windsor, Ontario where he spent his adolescence being weaned on hard rock.“If you’re from that area, most of the music you heard when you were growing up was hard rock in your car.I grew out of that and started listening to acoustic blues and the Yardbirds.” Johnson’s interests are so broad as to include Charlie Parker and Hank Williams as influences. He was even spotted at a recent Kiss concert sporting Ace Frehley makeup. While he might occasionally enjoy playing the part of someone else, Johnson’s songs are deeply personal with no role playing involved.“All of them are from personal experience.I’m not an actor.I can’t put myself in someone else’s life.” Big Sugar plays the Granada Theatre in downtown Sherbrooke on Saturday, with opening acts Rusty and Sandbox.Tickets cost $15.50, available at the door and by calling (819) 820-1000. April 4-10, 1997 page 5 atk 9 «r, * au.» Townshipsw eek By Cathy Watson Record Correspondent Drummondville I refused to sit at home behind the curtains and slowly go nuts!” Sue Hoegg explained the impetus that led to her most recent photo exhibit in Drummondville. The Nova Scotia native, who has wholeheartedly adopted the city as her home, mounted a 25-photo exhibit, Drummondville: Treasures In A Plain Brown Wrapper, at the Centre d’information Côme St-Germain through March.Depicting everyday life in Drummondville, Hoegg hopes the exhibit will travel and introduce the city and Quebecers to people elsewhere in Canada and in other countries. But what may become an ambassador for Drummondville and the province began as an effort on Hoegg’s part to fulfill an emotional need.“In April last year I didn't have a job. Finally got the baby in school and 1 needed to have something to do.And 1 had this little geographic problem,” said the mother of three with a smile.Over the past 20 years, Hoegg has lived in seven cities in four provinces. She said the relocation to Drummondville was a particularly difficult one to make.“1 didn’t speak any French when I came here.I really felt quite lost and was becoming disoriented and confused,” she remembered.“I had to figure out where the heck I was exactly." Hoegg said she would mistake the route from her house to the pharmacy with the one she used to take from her previous home in Ste.Foy.She began walking around the city to become familiar with her new surroundings, and as she walked, the more she saw, the more she liked.“It’s a common, ordinary, blue-collar, brown lunchbag town, but it’s not a dull existence," said the expressive photographer.“It has its own synchronized swimming team, its own symphony orchestra, its own art gallery, even a school of watercolor. It has everything, not just to live, but everything to live well.” Drummondville became a place Hoegg was proud to call home and she wanted to share what she saw with others.“I answered my own personal problem, but I had a secondary problem in that my friends and family wouldn’t come visit me in Quebec,” she said.“There has been sufficient political upset over the past number of years, plus the language barrier.I wanted my friends to see that I was alright.” So, after speaking with other Drum-mondvillois, Hoegg began her photo project without sponsors or funding.“I squeezed film money out of my grocery budget," she said.CATHY WATSON Photographer Sue Hoegg has set her sights on the world for her latest exhibit on Drummondville social life.Hoegg was interested in people’s visual impressions of Drummondville. She would ask everyone she met to tell her what came to their minds when they thought of Drummondville. She then used their answers to help her decide which scenes to photograph. The local farmer’s market and the windows at St.Frédéric church are a few of these mental images seen through Hoegg’s lens. But what originally began as a Tittle book’ on Drummondville took on a wider scope the more she worked on it.Hoegg said not only did her own family and friends lack information about Quebec, she felt most of the outside world did.“There is a real information vacuum concerning Quebec,” said Hoegg, pointing to Toronto newspapers as an example.“There will be very polished columns on Quebec politics, but our society does not make the newspapers.People don’t know who we are and the media don’t present them with any information.” She decided she could help answer the question 'Who are these people in Quebec?’ with a traveling exhibit of photos depicting Quebec social life.Once she had several photos and her project was shaping up nicely, it was suggested she seek funding from Drum-mondville’s Corporation des rues principales and local MNA Normand Jutras. The Corporation became her official sponsor, however it had no money to contribute.Jutras obliged her request by obtaining funding from the Canadian Intergovernmental Affairs office.“I found the government was very sensitive to the issue that their society was being hidden by their politics,” Hoegg said.Hoegg began an interest in photography at 14 years of age.Since then, her work has been featured in exhibits, won contests and even been used in a book.Although she is formally educated as an agricultural scientist, Hoegg has always had a love of art.“I love visual imagery,” she said.“I read a lot of art books.I’m a great fan of Freeman Patterson and Sherman Hines.I’ve been studying their books for years.” Hoegg’s artistic side comes through in most photos, however shots such as the one she calls Fractals reveals her scientific training in observation. She photographed the Curé Marchand bridge over the rocky St.Francis shore, juxtaposing the geometric shapes evident in both manmade and natural surfaces.“I’m self-taught, but mainly in composition,” she said.“I know I’m technically weak.” For the exhibit, she made sure to be exacting about the composition of each photo. She also insisted on natural light and spent months on a couple of shots, including The Guardian Angel, because she wanted to have exactly the “right” lighting. She said due to the position of the angel statue, she only had “a 10-minute window” of sunlight for the shot.Hoegg said her project is far from finished.“I’m still trying to get it off the ground,” said Hoegg, who plans to approach the federal government for funding to cover such necessities as frames. The frames she used for the Drummondville show were on loan from the city’s Centre Culturel. She would like the exhibit to first tour the province to get feedback from Quebecers before being shown in the rest of the country. Also, by making connections with people at Drum-mondville’s annual international folklore festival, Hoegg plans to send the show to other parts of the world. And what is Hoegg’s own answer to outsiders who ask ‘Who are these people in Quebec?’ “You'll find that they look a lot like you, but with some differences,” she said.“You won’t find a pétanques match in Hamilton, Ontario, or a white-shirted waiter taking his ease in a café doorway down in Toronto.” However, people will be able to see those things when Hoegg takes her vision of Drummondville and Quebec to the rest of the world.Cover ORIGINAL MICROFILMED AT VARYING INTENSITIES BECAUSE THE TEXT IS PRINTED ON GREYISH OR COLOUR BACKGROUND. page 6 April 4-10, 1997 Townshipsw eek Country THEI ‘Comfort Tour’ to feature four major artists With a little bit of luck, the Country Comfort tour set-up for 1997 might come to a place near us," I wrote in January.Lady Luck must be on our side since the tour will be stopping at the Champlain Valley Fair in Essex Junction, Vermont, on Tuesday August 26.1997.The Country Comfort concert features four major high-energy country music artists in one spectacular show - legendary Hank Williams, Jr.country music and movie star Travis Tritt, perennial fiddler favorite Charlie Daniels, and country newcomer JoDee Messina.Hank Williams Jr., performed his first concert at the tender age of eight, recorded his first song at 14 and scored his first major country song at 16.Nothing was easy for Williams facing the fact that he was riding the coattails of his legendary father. His desire to do things on his own turned him into some kind of a rebel when he recorded the album Hank Williams & Friends. The album’s rock edges alienated Williams from the Nashville establishment and from his longtime record company, MGM Records. The New South, Williams’ first album on Curb/Warner was the beginning of an association that would last until 1992.Other great albums such as Family Tradition, Whiskey Bent, and Hellhound topped 500,000 in sales within a year.Thirty years after his birth on May 26, 1949, in Shreveport, Louisiana the rebel had succeeded in forging his own identity. He knew that fans were there to see him, not a replica of his famous father. Many hit albums would follow -Habits Old and New, Rowdy, The Pressure Is On, High Notes, and Born To Boogie.Eventually, the country music industry began to come around.Williams would start receiving the honors and awards he deserved.Williams’ music was introduced to the mainstream audience in a unique way when “All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight” became the theme song for Monday Night Football on ABC-TV.The “Young Country” singer is set to entertain the Champlain Valley Fair’s crowd.Travis Tritt burst on the country music scene at the end of 1989 with a catchy first single titled “Country Club”.This song would become a new anthem for the working-class man.For women, he became the latest, long-haired, sexy-looking country idol.Born February 9, 1963, in Marietta, Georgia, Tritt grew-up on the family’s farm and had dreams of pursuing a musical career. He was already writing songs when he was barely 14 Since his first hit, Tritt has been piling the honors and accolades from both fans and the country music industry.Songs such as “Here’s a Quarter (Call Someone Who Cares)”, “Anymore”, “Bible Belt” and many more brought his fans unconditional love.A versatile singer, Tritt can belt out a country anthem, then throttle back for an emotional ballad. The singer is mindful of the roots of country music and the traditional sound, but just like one of his biggest influences (Hank Williams Jr.,) Tritt can be a rebel.STILL GOING STRONG Charlie Daniels is among a few recording artists whose careers stretch back into the sixties yet are still putting out contemporary material in the midnineties.Daniels remains pretty much the same, a renegade southern rocker who blends boogie and traditional country fiddle-playing with lyrics that are often patriotic and humorous.“The Devil Went Down To Georgia” is his signature song and is considered a classic with country music fans.JoDee Messina is a new comer who has a lot to offer and her charisma and enthusiasm shine forth in concert.By the time she was 16, she was already performing with her own band.Messina is also a gifted songwriter.Best known for her hit “Heads Carolina, Tails California” Messina sings about freedom, passion, love, and adventure.A concert featuring such a lineup can only be called a major country event that you don’t want to miss. Two components of the show worth the price of admission are state-of-the-art high-tech interactive pavilions and country lifestyle attractions.Included are country music exhibits and artifacts, country-oriented computer games, a motor sports pavilion with NASCAR and NHRA cars, a trading post filled with Fruit of the Loom artist merchandise and specialty products. The Country Comfort Experience is free and will open to the general public-several hours prior to the concert and will be located in a separate area east of the Coca Cola Grandstand. The concert will begin at 6.30 p.m.You can buy your concert tickets by reserving at (802) 863-5966.Have a nice week and start getting ready for all those fairs.Keep your country state of mind.Country Connection Jessie Aulis The legendary Hank Williams, Jr., country newcomer JoDee Messina, country music and movie star Travis Tritt, perennial fiddler favorite Charlie Daniels offer up some country comfort.¦ Country Collectible No.8 Marty Stuart is a unique showman. His music comes from somewhere on the dangerous edge of country, from bluegrass, rockabilly and honky-tonk styles. From playing his first guitar at age four, Stuart has worked hard to blend musical elements while mixing in his own talents as a songwriter and musician. The hit that best describes him is "Hillbilly
