June 4-June 10, 1999 page 5 Townshipsw eek =Record= Cover Sunshine Theatre is all about character-building DAVID ANDERSON/CORRESPONDENT #«ÉÉ1 ïM mm \ Greetings.Bill Jarand, Rose Highfield, Darken Bell, Arthur Kilkelly and Chrisopher Freeman in Sunshine Theatre Productions’ You Can't Take It With You, playing at the Knowlton Pub Playhouse June 9-20.By Sylvia Warden Knowlton With just five days left until her theatrical debut in Sunshine Theatre Productions’ You Can’t Take It With You, Rose Highfield is intent on not just acting her part, but becoming the character. That character is Penny Sycamore, the matriarch of the wacky yet sweet Sycamore family, in the Pulitzer Prizewinning play by Moss Hart and George S.Kaufman.A self-described perfectionist, Highfield, a Grade 2 teacher at Heroes’ Memorial Elementary School in Cowansville, says she is unsure where Penny begins and Rose ends.“So much of her character seems frighteningly like my own. She’s one of these people who takes up causes and takes up crafts. It just reminded me of myself.I’m a painter, a teacher, I have a greenhouse, it’s one sort of all-consuming interest at a time.” Highfield says teaching and acting don’t make for such strange bedfellows.“I’ve always said a good teacher is a ham actor and I just never took the opportunity to get involved in acting.” If teaching is Highfield’s dress rehearsal, You Can’t Take It With You is her curtain call on the Great White Way.After years of toying with the idea of getting involved in theatre, Highfield took Kate Wisdom, a founding partner in Sunshine Theatre Productions, up on her challenge to try out for a role.In essence, Highfield lives the meaning of the play: We have but one life to lead so live it to the fullest. The show’s director, Sunil Mahtani, puts it succinctly: “Don’t live in such a way that in 20 years you’re going to look back and regret what you’ve done because you haven’t taken the time for family or to do what you really want.” In that respect, each cast member is a Sycamore. All theatre is difficult but community theatre is especially demanding.Commitment, tenacity and a sense of humour are all needed to see a production through its run.As Mahtani prepares for his sophomore effort as Sunshine Theatre’s artistic director, the struggle is worth the sweat. Each member of the cast, 18 in all, playing 19 roles, has a full-time job and life outside the theatre. That’s in addition to the work each is putting into the show.Bill Jarand, who plays Tony Kirby, the romantic lead, is also the show’s set designer.Kate Wisdom is Mrs.Kirby onstage and the costume designer behind the scenes.Jarand welcomes the exhilaration performing brings. He says acting is about finding yourself in each role.“I think all characters are a piece of ourselves and we just bring that piece forward, examine it and then magnify it,” says Jarand.“So, if Tony is a romantic with a sense of adventure, it’s definitely part of me and I just have to emphasize it.” Jarand, who was last seen as Tito Mirelli in Sunshine Theatre’s debut, Lend Me A Tenor, has thoughts of turning professional.“Doesn’t everybody,” he says as a smile envelops his face.He auditioned for this summer’s Theatre Lac Brome season and has done some television work.“You’re an adult and you’re allowed to play, and in professional theatre, you get paid.” A veteran, Jarand possesses the calmness and quiet confidence that Highfield is in the process of developing.“For anyone who might have this concept of stage fright, I think a lot of that washes away because of the rehearsal process,” he says.“You have all these other people who are nervous or who are experienced and they bond together to create a safe environment.” Highfield got her first taste of performing for an audience during the ‘20 Years of Talented Townshippers’ show at Massey-Vanier High School last month. The cast performed a pivotal scene in the play.“The audience laughed and clapped,” says Highfield in a whisper.“It’s like I started to tingle and glow and almost shake inside. It was the audience’s reaction. It gave me such a charge. It really did, like ‘Wow this is really neat.’” Now, it’s feedback from those she shares the stage with and her director that keep her going through this last week of rehearsals.Mahtani has spent time with each actor, developing a vision of the characters.Wisdom says her character, Mrs.Kirby, is repressed.Highfield is less exact in her description of Penny but she has a definite sense of the woman, helping select her wardrobe.“Like Rose will say to me, T feel Pen-nyish with this or Penny wouldn’t like that,’” says Wisdom, who is charged with finding signature pieces for each character. No small feat. With 18 in the cast and almost half of them requiring three full costume changes, Wisdom has been busy sewing and buying.“I think I’ve been to every rummage sale in the village,” she says with a laugh.Wisdom smiles easily and is quick to chat.Whereas Highfield sees similarities between herself and Penny, Wisdom says she has had to really study herself to find Mrs.Kirby within her psyche.“It’s very hard to stop this smile,” she says as she raises her hands to her lips.“I have this wig I put on and I put on makeup and I wear this grey satin dress that’s really cold-looking.She looks dead by the time I got this clothing on.So then I did my lines in the mirror. Then I’m watching myself in the mirror and every time my muscles moved, I’d get them under control because staring at myself in the mirror I could tell when Mrs.Kirby was there and when it was me.” In a few days everyone else will get to see Mrs.Kirby and the rest of the cast in You Can’t Take It With You.Until then, Highfield is practicing her lines and, in the process, becoming Penny Sycamore.“It’s kind of crazy but I think I’m going to get a lot of satisfaction out of it.” • • • • • Sunshine Theatre Productions’ You Can’t Take It With You, by Moss Hart and PAGE 6 June 4-June 10, 1999 Townshipsw eek Country Teen displays talent beyond her years RECORD FILES **b :JiF Jessica Andrews might be only fifteen, but her credentials are impressive. She made her debut on the soundtrack to the Disney movie The Prince of Egypt. This year’s edition of The Brome County Agricultural Fair is full of promise for country music fans.On top of the usual attractions the fair will feature three good country shows.A Tribute to Garth Brooks “No Fences Garth Brooks,” Canadian Country Music Award Winner George Fox and country music entertainer, A.M.A.Award Winner, Paul Brandt will be showcased. The Garth Brooks Tribute and the George Fox show are included in the price of the admission on the fairgrounds while you can already buy your tickets for the Paul Brandt show by mail or phone.Money orders,Visa and Mastercard are accepted.Grandstand tickets, and general seating are $15 ( $12 before July 1) while standing room on the track is $20.Prices include G$T & PST but do not include entry to the fairgrounds. For reservation you can call (450) 242-3976 or tickets are also available at The Shack in Knowlton, F.G.Edwards, West Brome, Dépanneur Brome and the fairgrounds in Brome.Hats off to Brome Fair organizers for the excellent shows they’re getting for country fans around here and watch for our upcoming Paul Brandt contest. Now let’s talk about new albums and here’s my pick for this week: Jessica Andrews, Heart Shaped World, (Dream Works), This is one impressive debut album from a 15-year-old talent sure to climb the ladder of success in no time at all.Andrews already turned lots of heads when she debuted on The Prince of Egypt soundtrack as the only newcomer in a field that fea-tured big names such as Reba McEn-tire, Faith Hill, Vince Gill, Clint Black and Alison Krauss. Now that Andrews of Huntingdon, Tennessee has her own album, she should get a lot of at- tention from the industry as well as from the fans. She’s dynamic, self-assured, mature and has an incomparable vocal talent for her years.Byron Gallimore, who’s produced such country stars as Tim McGraw and Jo Dee Messina, has taken the young singer under his wing carefully selecting a dozen songs to showcase her range and diversity. The collection includes of course, her contribution to the Prince of Egypt soundtrack, “I Will Be There For You,” and the maturity of her interpretation shines throughout the album starting with the up beat rebel rouser “James Dean In Tennessee.” The message is very sober on the John Scott Sherill/ Cathy Majeski love song “The Riverside,” while there’s a wistful feel to “Unbreakable Heart.” After LeAnn Rimes and Amanda Wilkinson, this teenager proves time and again that artistic maturity can be obtained at a fairly young age.Her self-confidence along with her talent make her sound extremely convincing on anything she does.Set to a strong beat and strumming acoustic guitar,“Whatever” is a joyful declaration of independence as the young singer reproaches a friend who has the bad habit of making too many promises.Andrews sings about grabbing the opportunity and having the stamina to go for it when the chance presents itself. She also excels in the Delta-flavored “Hungry Love,” and is rather sassy on “Ruby Shoes.” On the beautiful and tender “I Do Now,” she’s all emotions and she will melt your heart in a jiffy.Watch out! You can’t ask for a better debut album and Jessica Andrews has everything it takes to become a superstar.Chely Wright, Single White Female, (MCA Nashville) This is Chely Wright’s fourth album and her best effort so far as she has reached a new emotional maturity that shines in her voice. The title cut, “Single White Female,” is currently working its way up the Billboard charts. This is an aggressive number as the singer gives notice that she will find a man and put an end to her single life.Wright is very tender on her rendition of “She Went Out For Cigarettes,” a song about a woman who has decided she’s had enough of a stale relationship. The emotion is genuine and Wright is very convincing on this number. This new album is co-produced by Tony Brown, Buddy Cannon and Norro Wilson and it seems like the combination of all that experience added, serves the young woman pretty well. The collection offers 10 songs and they’re all winners, no fillers on this album.Every number has been carefully selected for her. There’s a nice ballad with a lyrical twist on the self-penned “Picket Fences,” in which a woman is wondering about the fuss over having a husband, a house and 2.5 kids - at the same time you can feel her loneliness. There’s passion and more passion in “The Fire,” while she gives all she’s got vocally on “The Love That We Lost.” There’s also a few good up-tempo numbers such as “Some Kind of Something,” “Rubbin’ It In” and the title track. She has been working very hard in studio and it shows on this album. She has honed her craft as an interpreter and her efforts should have a direct impact on her success as a mainstream entertainer.Have a nice week and keep your country state of mind!
