Glenn Roy, Diana Fajrajsl, Brett Watson, Rob Torr and Greg Kramer in Loot.deliciously dark.STUDIO TOUR The thieves plan to bury their cash and mummy’s coffin naturally suggests itself.Since there isn’t enough room for both body and money, the loot wins out and mum heads for the closet, upside-down.Along comes Truscott, intent on arresting his suspects, as well as catching an elusive killer nurse who has thus far escaped prosecution for 13 murders.Diana Fajrajsl has the plum role as nurse Fay, a devoutly Catholic murderer whose conscience does not seem to be perturbed in the least by her criminal activities.Fajrajsl, fresh from her triumph directing the “babe” play, “Always .Patsy Cline,” is enthusiastic about her part.“She is one of my favourite characters (in her repertory). She’s an instigator, she July 17 - 25,1999, 10 am - 5 pm 39 artists in the Sutton, Mansonviile and Knowlton area, invite you to come and visit their studios, see demonstrations and talk about their art.Flyers with map available at: Sutton Tourist Bureau, TownHall, 1-800-565-8455 Reilly House, Mansonviile, Knowlton Tourist Bureau, Brome County Historical Museum, Knowlton Info Touristique, Exit 68, autoroute 10 Centre Info-Arts Bell, Place des arts The Gazette, 250 St-Antoine W.Montreal www.acbm.qc.ca/tour-des-arts doesn’t just let things happen to her.Orton wrote a strong female character years before 1971 when the Woman’s Movement started.” Fajrajsl admitted it was difficult to find a sympathetic side to Fay.“I look for that in the sociological situation.Back then, the only way for women to get any real money was from men,” she said.In the pre-Women’s Lib context, Fay couldn’t attain her financial goals through business; marriage was the only way she had to get rich.(Well, widowhood mostly!) The energy level is very intense during this play and the dialogue is delivered at a breathtaking pace. The cast uses British accents and only two of the actors are actually British (Emma Stevens and Greg Kramer).Fajrajsl said this was “mentally demanding, not physically demanding. But my mouth has to be awake! And I need lots of energy.” EXHIBITION ¦muq >ARTi NERS TW.450-5384758/6765 "MOCADOft LANE” 17 PRINCIPALE N.SUTTON,QUE.10 AM - 7 PM 10 AM-5 PM Thnrvto Saturday Sunday t* Wednesday The four male actors share a mutual love of the script.Greg Kramer, who plays the insufferable Inspector Truscott, said he truly wanted to do this play.“I really wanted to do it.It’s what drew me out here,” he said.“Although it was written 30 years ago, it’s still very apt and not dated.I love the language in it.I think Orton has now achieved a level of respectability as a sort of a ‘cheeky bugger’ that would have made theatre lac brome him roll over in his grave back then!” “Loot doesn’t get done very often. This was a good opportunity to do it,’ said Brett Watson, who plays the lovestruck Dennis, an undertaker’s assistant and thief.“It’s kind of fun doing it for summer theatre, where they usually like to do a mystery. This is a send-up of a murder mystery. And it’s about fighting authority and questioning authority.” Rob Torr, who plays Hal, the truthful but disrespectful son, points out that “although Loot is shocking now, it is not as shocking as it was then. And it’s actually not that far from reality.I think if audiences are shocked a bit it’s good because it makes you think about the reality we are living.” Glenn Roy rounds out the males as the grieving and horrified widower McCleavy.Roy said he was initially concerned about playing a character much older than himself.“Of course, the other guys all see me as much older than they are anyway! They all pick on me,” he joked. The men are enjoying being in picturesque Knowlton and acting in the true repertory fashion. The schedule is anything but dull and their roles as musicians in Patsy Cline and actors in a deliciously black comedy gives them a chance to display their range.Director Nicholas Pynes is remaining true to his vow to deliver theatre that does not simply echo television sitcoms.Loot is a daring choice and it is definitely to Pynes’s credit that he took a chance on intelligent comedy, however shocking and dark the material. Restaurant Mocador is a recent addition to the Sutton arts scene.Galerie Partenaires opened its doors in June and is the creation of artists George Constantin, John Quesnel, Michel Lafond, Micheline Sansregret and silent partner Lyndon Gilker.John Quesnel, a painter of miniature oils, is a native of Montreal and a resident of Sutton for 12 years.Painter George Constantin, a watercolorist and creator of colorful shadow boxes from recycled materials and dried plants has been a full-time resident of Sutton for over two years.Oil and watercolor painter Micheline Sansregret and oil painter Michel Lafond are weekenders who permanently reside in Pier refonds.Although the gallery only recently opened its doors, John Quesnel said that the artists’ partnership has been around for over three.“The idea was to share all costs,” said Quesnel, speaking from the gallery that displays the works of the four artists.“We’re having fun,” adds Michel Lafond.“The whole idea is to have fun as well as to have a place to work.” As well as sharing a gallery, the four partners share a similar background: Quesnel, Lafond, and Sansregret all worked as professional graphic artists, while Constantin worked as a set designer.John Quesnel apprenticed as a colour etcher, working in graphic and fine arts for Rapid, Grip and Batten Ltd.where many artists, including Thompson, Lis-mer, Macdonald and Champagne began their careers. His work currently focuses on oil miniatures, painting portraits, landscapes from eastern U.S.and Canada.Partner Micheline Sansregret said that drawing has been her lifelong passion. She studied with painter Andrei Zadorozny, a student of Lismer. She has also studied at the École de peinture du Québec and the Saidye Bronfman Center in Montréal.Michel Lafond, who describes himself as primarily self-taught, discovered painting at the age of 18 and has worked in oil, watercolours, charcoal and other media. His works have been exhibited at the Complex page 5 Montreal artists take to the country JK 1 City co-op exhibit in Knowlton By Tanya Tkach Record Correspondent Knowlton Campagn’art, an eclectic mix of six professional artists from Montreal, are exhibiting their original art works for the first time in the Eastern Townships at Knowlton’s Brome County Historical Museum through July 18.The artists, who usually have annual open houses at their co-op on St.Ambroise Street in Montreal, decided to present their works in Knowlton, said organizer and part-time Knowlton resident Louise Charest-Malepart.“We’ve come here because we think it’s the best place in the Eastern Townships,” she said.Charest-Malepart said she met Raymonde Racine, the sculptor who formed the co-op, 20 years ago while doing sculpture in Montreal.“The five of us met through artistic circles,” said Charest-Malepart, who combines her organizational skills with making pottery. If sales and reviews are favourable, the group plans to return annually.Racine, 77, has been creating sculptures since ‘73 when she started her courses at the Visual Arts Centre in Montreal.“I work very slowly and by my instincts. It’s like a newborn for me - I I Show organizer and part-time Knowlton resident Louise Charest-Malepart.JOY YOKOYAMA have a feeling and it starts. Then it’s the stoneware and the preparation of copper, manganese and cobalt which is my technique,” said Racine, who planned to retire the previous year, but just completed her recent pieces last week.“They pushed me to finish for this exhibit. It’s good to have something to do,” added Racine, who founded one of the first co-ops in Montreal at the corner of Sherbrooke and Atwater Streets in the late 70s, one that had a long and established list of followers.Marilyn Mel-nick, representing her husband, jeweller Leo Beinglas, was eager to discuss his recent collection.“Usually he works in gold, platinum and precious stones, but these sterling silver pieces are made from a lost wax process,” she said.“He can only make three or four and then has to start again. They’re whimsical, using many different elements such as the ‘om’ sign, or the TANYA TKACH/CORRESPONDENT elephant idol ffom India.” Professional and well-known ceramist Gary Merkel, whose pieces are exhibited in galleries around the world and whose works are published in magazines, joined forces with Racine seven years ago while searching for a new studio after relocating to Montreal from British Columbia.“I love my life, I love ceramics and doing it,” said Merkel, whose love of shaping things originated while in high school.“I’ve also studied with Mr.Weber at Confederation College in Thunder Bay, took courses at the University of Regina, and Emily Carr and did workshops in New York City,” said Merkel, who developed his love of bright colours and whimsical style while learning the ‘funk tradition’ in Vancouver. In his designs, Merkel juxtaposes organic nature with man-made designs - the voluptuous, round and soft versus the hard steel with straight edges - as illustrated in his teapots.“They can be used, they’re totally glazed and they hold tea. Some of them pour well, they’re theatrical,” he said. The creation of Merkels pieces involve an extremely long process with three firings: The first is the bisque process which removes the water, then there’s the glaze firing and the last process involves gold and platinum finishes. Each firing takes up to 12 hours and then an additional 24 hours for the cooling process.“I have about a 20 per cent loss in the work I do.Clay needs time and it will let you know if you’re pushing it,” said Merkel, who prefers working in porcelain which involves an even longer process. He described porcelain as a very fine and dense clay subject to warping and cracking - very temperamental.“One of my porcelain pieces that took two months alone to dry is in the permanent collection at the Art Gallery of Victoria. It took me one half-hour each week to dry it and then I’d cover it,” he recalled. The most recent artist at the co-op is Bev Lev, a former social worker, who joined the group two years ago while studying ceramics during a sabbatical.“I’ve been wanting to do this for a number of years, but fell into social work needing to make a living,” said Lev, who studied visual arts in Ottawa 20 years ago.Lev, modest about her talent and surprised at the sale of four of her initial pieces during their annual open house last Christmas, decided to continue her new-found career. She’s pleased with ceramics, stressing the need to be focused and equating the art form with lessons and tests in each individual’s life.Lev said the major hurdle is the test between your will and creativity: “You’re better off being open to letting nature takes its course and whatever happens, happens.” Ceramic underglazed bowl by Bev Lev.TANYA TKACH/CORRESPONDENT ‘Funky’ teapot by Gary Merkel. Dunn on Thursday, Sept.2 and the queen of country music, Reba McEn-tire, is scheduled to make her third appearance at the fair on Sunday, Sept.5 with comedian Dick Hardwick as an opening act. Here’s my pick of new albums for this week: Steve Wariner: Two Teardrops (Capitol) Wariner never really achieved mainstream success but still had a satisfying and stable career, developing a reputation as a guitar player.Suddenly last year things turned around when his song “Holes in the Floor of Heaven,” reached the top of the country charts. The song earned him many awards as well as new recognition from country music fans.Following up on this success was no easy task and common sense would say that he should probably have led off this new album with a different type of song, one that wouldn’t draw comparisons.Instead Wariner trusted his instincts as he made “Two Teardrops,” not just the first single, but the title cut as well.It was the right move for the singer. The ballad about life tackles a different subject than “Holes in the Floor of Heaven,” but it draws a similar emotional response and it made it to number one in no time. The honors and recognition he received for this song of the year(1998) destroyed the wall between Wariner, the fans and radioland.Listening to the album you soon realize that Wariner’s talent doesn’t stop with the first ballad. He wrote or co-wrote all but one of the album’s generous 15 songs. It kicks off with the rockin’ “Hands of Time,” before sampling multi-flavoured country music such as traditional , R8iB, folk and pop.“Talk To Her Heart,” is a piece of advice to men co-written with country great “Whisperin’ ” Bill Anderson and Jim Weatherly on which Bryan White joins him.His great talent as a guitarist is well featured on the instrumental “The Harry Shuffle” while the second single “I’m Already Taken” is a sweet and tender number.“Cry No More” explores the pop side of country music and Wariner’s 15-year-old son, Ryan, collaborates some great guitar licks to “So Much.” Following in his father’s footsteps, he shows a lot of potential. The recording was done with a relaxed approach which gives the album a nice feel, not too slick.Steve Wariner finally has his place in the sun.Roy Rogers: Happy Trails: The Roy Rogers Collection (1937-1990) (Rhino) No doubt this boxed set is a great collector’s item and represents an honor that should have been given before Roy Rogers passed away last year at the age of 86.This collection is a reminder that Rogers was a successful singer long before he became the great movie cowboy that people loved. The legacy of popular cowboy music he left is huge including what he did as a solo singer, in tandem with his wife, Dale Evans and as a founding member of the Sons of the Pioneers. This three-disc, 94-track collection offers all of Rogers’ best-known songs even some of his early work with the Sons such as “My Saddle Pals and I,” “Blue Shadows on the Trail" and “Stampede.” There are also examples of his early COURTESY CAPITOL Steve Wariner has made a name for himself as a guitar player.70s comeback on the country charts with “Lovenworth” and “Hoppy, Gene and Me,” a salute to fellow range riders Hopalong Cassidy and Gene Autry. His latest material comes from a 1990 tribute done in Nashville. The album also features unreleased material, including a different take of “Happy Trails” with Dale Evans as his partner. Some tunes have also been taken from his popular radio show for the great pleasure of those who remember it.The archivists at Rhino have done a wonderful job with this package adding a full-color booklet of more than 60 pages of information on the songs, a complete list of his films, many photos and essays on Rogers and his work. The booklet is packed with information on the 450 or so items such as toys, clothes and other things that were sold under his name, which are now highly collectible. There is a gold mine of information on the legendary cowboy and his body of work which is appreciable for the diehard fan who might have missed something. This boxed set should be regarded as a treasure and a legacy from the man whose name is familiar to even those who are not country fans.A must for collectors and a very nice idea for a gift.Have a nice week and happy trails to you until we meet again!
