Toipmhifisw e e k Cover July 4-10, 1997 page 5 Piggery play has a few surprises up its sleeve Sylvia: More than male mid-life mayhem PERRY BEATON/SPECIAL TO THE RECORD Greg (Peter Smith) tries to comfort a pained Sylvia (Kristen Thomson) after having the dog fixed, while his wife Kate (Margot Dionne) demands his attention.o ¦ ' By Kathy Mercier Record Correspondent Ste-Catheri n e-d e-Hatley Typical stories of male mid-life crises usually involve hot little sports cars and luscious young women.Sylvia, the season-opener at The Piggery Theatre, adds a few new twists to those oft-heard tales.A.R.Gurney’s play, directed by Greg Tuck, replaces the fast car and young woman with a lab-poodle cross. However, the pooch is in fact played by a woman.Montreal actor Peter Smith, who performed at The Piggery last year in Dead Together, plays the middle-aged Greg, who is finding his career less fulfilling than it used to be.His wife Kate (Margot Dionne) is enjoying a budding career after raising the kids.During a regular escape from the office to the park, Greg picks up a frisky little lost mutt named Sylvia (Kristen Thomson), who soon becomes a point of conflict between the couple.Smith said the play is about much more than a man facing mid-life doldrums.“It’s more interesting than that. It’s about developing a relationship,” he said.“The idea of a mid-life crisis is like a hook-in for people. It’s not just about me, but about everyone trying to adjust to each other. It’s about expectations and how we react to things that happen out of sync, about doing things you wouldn’t usually do.” Dog is Like a Child Any pooch owner knows that a dog is like having a child and Kate believes she doesn’t have the time or energy to devote to a new pet.“It’s a life change having a dog,” said Smith.“They are at a point of their life where they are supposed to be going to things like dinner parties.” Toronto actress Thomson, a National Theatre School graduate last seen at The Piggery in 1993s Lend Me a Tenor, said the friction between Sylvia and Kate comes from the latter’s perception of her life.“I think she has a different image of how her life should be - more glamorous. She doesn’t want the responsibility of a dog,” said Thomson.Smith said Kate is simply reacting to a very rude interruption in the couple’s life.“It’s a mystery to her why Greg needs a dog,” he said.“Actually, Kate is the voice of reason.” Preparing for her physically challenging title role, Thomson spent the first week of rehearsals exploring the ‘dogness’ of her character.“We had to make decisions on how much I would be behaving like a dog,” she said.“The first week I played a lot of doggie stuff.” Once she established the gestures and vocabulary of Sylvia, the exaggerated dog movements were toned down. The dog-human character that evolved added to the pet-friend-mistress quality in the relationship between Sylvia and Greg, making for a few strange moments in the play.“It’s the strange parts that gives this play its heart and comedy,” Thomson added.“When Sylvia goes in heat for the first time, Greg is jealous that she is after another dog, and he has her spayed. The operation is a watershed in his relationship with his wife (who is facing a job opportunity in Eng- land).” Sylvia can’t go to England without being quarantined for six months, and Greg feels guilty about having his dog fixed.“Out of this ridiculous situation, he and his wife are at a difficult juncture,” said Thomson.Greg must choose between his dog or his wife. Also starring Ian Watson in a trio of roles, Sylvia promises thoughtful insight on how people deal with changes in their relationships and their lives, all the while providing some good laughs.• • • Sylvia is playing at The Piggery Theatre in Ste-Catherine-de-Hatley until July 12.Performances are Tuesdays to Saturdays at 8:30 p.m., with matinees at 2 p.m.on Wednesdays and 4 p.m.on Saturdays.Tickets cost $15.50-$19.For reservations, call (819) 842-2431.ü m PERRY BEATON/ SPECIAL TO THE RECORD Fellow dog owner Tom (Ian Watson) talks to Greg in the park while Sylvia craves canine company. page 6 July 4-10, 1997 Townshipsw eék Country Reviews help fans wade through new releases Time for another course of country music The country music menu has a lot to offer this summer - from concerts to special shows on TV - you can find anything.Record companies are cooking up a succulent brochette of new country releases. Some are by newcomers while others are by well-established artists. It’s a tough choice, so here are a few reviews to make it easier to di-gest.Victoria Shaw, Victoria Shaw, (Wara-er/Reprise) Shaw is well known as a very successful songwriter. She has a proven track record of crafting No.1 records for other artists. Her credits include “The River” and “She’s Every Woman” for Garth Brooks, and “I Love The Way You Love Me” for John Michael Murphy. In this self-titled album, Shaw proves once again that she’s an excellent songwriter.“Just To Say We Did” sports the message that everybody just needs to have fun. There’s also “Don’t Move”, a touching poem about breaking up and “Let’s Talk About Me,” which could be the perfect song for an assertiveness training course.“All For The Sake Of Love” is very familiar to fans of the TV soap opera As The World Turns because it is heard often during the show.Highlights on this album include Country Connection Jessie Aulis “Stuck On You,” “Wild Rose,” “Don’t Move” and“One of Those Days”.Each one blends the emotion of the lyrics with the richness of Shaw’s vocals superbly.Hopefully this sophomore effort, far better than the first album, will take Shaw’s music to the top of the charts.Alabama, Dancin’ On The Boulevard, (RCA) Dancin’ On The Boulevard is Alabama’s 12th album and after selling 35 million records, the good ’ole boys are still very popular. As usual the album shines with top-notch production and Alabama’s fine vocals and tight harmonies. The collection is a mix of country and pop-edge material, most of it written by the band. They also cover a couple of rock standards, popular at the time Country Collectible No.19 Trisha Yearwood From her first single “She's In Love With The Boy,” audiences have been in love with Trisha Yearwood.Since then the simple home-town girl has seen her songs go to the top of the charts more than once and has become one of country's most popular entertainers.Bom: Monticello, Georgia on September 19, 1964.Spouse: Robert Reynolds, bassist for the group The Mavericks Latest single: “How Do I Live" which is also the theme song for the movie Con Air with Nicholas Cage.Quote: “I just flat-out love to sing.If you really feel it, other people will hopefully feel it too.But even if nobody’s listening, I will do it forever.” The boys from Alabama have done it again with their new album Dancin’ On The Boulevard.when they were performing in night clubs in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.Their cover of “My Girl” and “Hey Baby” are very fresh and very much in tone with the rest of the album. The pop-flavored “Dancin’, Shaggin’ on the Boulevard” also has this charming retro touch. On the more country side there’s “I Couldn’t Just Say No” might just become another classic Alabama ballad, while “Of Course I’m Alright” has that strong Nashville feel expected from a heartbreaking slow dance. There’s also a catchy tribute to a working man - the musician of course - titled “One More Time Around” and the high-energy “Sad Looking Moon”.Alabama always sings about the good old days, but don’t worry there’s a very contemporary feel here.If you are an Alabama fan, you will love this album and if you don’t know them, what a wonderful opportunity to discover this talented bunch.James Bonamy, Roots & Wings, (Epic/Sony) This sophomore effort is excellent and since the second album is most of the time what makes or breaks a new artist, James Bonamy will survive. He really met the challenge head-on with this high-quality production.Bonamy is and will remain traditional country with the heart touching “Daddy Never Had a Chance in Hell” or the rollicking “I Knew I’d Need My Heart Someday”.If you compare the two you’ll understand the depth of the whole collection of songs featured on Roots & Wings. The title track is a moving, sentimental definition of what family values are all about while the first single released “The Swing” is hoe-down music that tells a tale of real lasting love.Bonamy is really impressive when it comes to ballads. His heartfelt, soulful vocals have a way of bringing out the most in a song such as “Naked to the Pain.” Bonamy’s growth as an artist and a new acquired confidence are strongly visible on this second album, which ranks him with the best.Tim McGraw, Everywhere, (Curb/Emi) Since his very first album McGraw has never stopped getting better and more confident, offering collections which are always more polished than the one before. The joy of his marriage to fellow country star Faith Hill and the glow of fatherhood are all over this idyllic and romantic album. The first single released “It’s Your Love” a duet with his wife is an ode to a soul mate in which love and affection are the key words.“Where The Green Grass Grows” is a mid-tempo ballad on which McGraw’s positive outlook and family values are evident as he outlines a wholesome plan to raise his kids.On the upbeat “For a Little While” the chiming piano and swirling synthesizers are a perfect blend for an unusual sound.“Ain’t That The Way It Always Ends” is a country-style rocker or maybe I should say McGraw’s style.Dealing with personal choice and wistful reflection are the two ballads “I Do But I Don’t” and “One ofThese Days”, while “Hard On The Ticker” is a humorous honky-tonker that compares an attractive woman to a horror movie. With “Everywhere” McGraw returns to the sensitive mood of the album, a song about a love that still haunts him. There’s no fillers on this collection and it should do great with fans and on the radio.McGraw is no ordinary country singer.Everything he does, offers new ideas, new approaches. It’s revitalizing and when you compare it to the work of other artists’ work, McGraw is always a notch higher.Everywhere is a breath of fresh air.UPLANDS IVIUSEUJVI 50 Park St., Lennoxville 564-0409 Daily News from the Eastern Townships: 100 Years of the Sherbrooke Record Ttiesday - After rehearsals in Europe for the musical slated to be ready for the fall of 1998, he plans to record his first soul/funk album which should be released during the summer.Garou fans fear not, he will be back in Magog this summer for a couple of gigs.CITE FM ANIMATION TELE 7 ANIMATION; ANIMATION; Cl MO IQt> I ih à 14b BRUNCH MUSICAL Presse THEATRE LE GRANADA Boutique Café 2IH30 TEXAS FLOOD i9h à 20*1 GAGNANTS BLUES «QU'ON COURRE* PEPSI 23h SHADES OF HENDRIX 20h à 2 ih SUPER |AM SESSION 21h30 SUPER JAM SESSION CHLT 630 ANIMATION: Au Café du Palais FINALISTES BLUES »QUON COURRE» PEPSI t2 groupe» par soin THÉÂTRE LE GRANADA 2lh30 PLUME LATRAVERSE 21 h 30 K.G.B.Minuit COSMIC COWBOYS 23h LUCKY PETERSON UTTLE ANTHONY AND Bar les Graffiti THE LOCO-MOTIVES I9h à 2Oh DELTA NOISE THÉÂTRE LE GRAIWADA THÉÂTRE LE GRANADA 20hà 21h TONYD.2 IK à 22h BOB WALSH 22b à 23k ANDY J.FOREST OTIS GRAND Au Café du Palais BARS RIB STEAK RON AND THE BLUES REVUE CARLOS DEL JUNCO JIMMY |AMES HENRI BRETON UTTLE 10 AND THE HURRICANE OTIS GRAND DELTA NOISE ANDY J.FOREST flM ZELLER AND IOE JAMMER Restaurant-bar cher Ronnie Bar le Sharky's Bar ies Graffiti Le New York Pub ORGANISATEURS 2IH30 PAUL SHINE AND THE DREAM TEAM A 23h IIMMYIOHNSON THÉÂTRE LE GRAIVADA Le Deelite centre-ville Au Café da Palais Le Café Bla-Bla Restaurant-bar chez Ronnie RIB STEAK RON AND THE BLUES REVUE CARLOS DEL I UNCO BOB WALSH HENRI BRETON UTTLE |0 AND THE HURRICANE TONY D.DELTA NOISE ANDY |.FOREST |IM ZELLER AND IOE 1AMMER Sherbrooke PARTENAIRES Ville de Sherbrooke SIDAC [f?KtNG-WTU Bar le Sharky's Bar tes Graffiti Le New York Pub Le Deelite Le Well Pub Bar le Contact KING-WELLINGTON SUPER PASSE Animation de rue Au Café du Palais COLLABORATEURS (gly» accc»» to Bvery thow) LA TROUPE DU CHAPEAU ROUGE JITTERBUG SWING-ARTISANS -SIMBAD.CRACHEUR DE FEU-«•BLUES EN PEINTURE»- (ArtUtt» en «rt* »UueU.encan nllémtcMKl Le Café Bla-Bla Le Well Pub Record Qunfon Q Bar le Contact smæ 3m 7th annual Friday, July 4 Sunday, July Q Wednesday, July 2 Saturday, July 5 OPENING CEREMONIES Exterior stage | Exterior stage Thursday, July 3 Exterior stage Exterior stage Exterior stage Exterior stage “Véa cttéd to '*4 ###/# Billets en vente au CAFI DU PALAIS , : 184,.mellr Whiting pr*» dc Wefilogtori N, Disquaire JUKI BOX HMV Urtrlno.rtr.t UtMr.I 888 270-2263 LaTribuue [l8h FINALISTES «UES «QU'ON OOUWt&PtPSI 12 groupes par soin Au Café du Palais ; ï I9h à 20b JITTERBUG SWING j |20h»2lh IIMMY (AMES | i 2ihà 22h UTTLE IO AND THE l HURRICANE ’ ai Frl i 1»1 B-l I 22h à 23h OTIS GRAND | ! 18b FINALISTES Au Café du Palais I BLUES «QUON COURRE* PEPSI 12 groupe» per soin [ I9h à 20b MM ZELLER AND |OE JAMMER RÜlUlMlUrMlj il [ 20ha2lb CARLOS DEL I UNCO j 21b à 22h STEPHEN BARRY -{jafl [ 22hà 23b RIB STEAK RON AND BLUES REVUE M f I t Mg-i b l»u»| 1 sa RIB STEAK RON AND Restanrant-bar !
