450-770-7953.we splurged on a second appetizer which we shared. The papaya salad featured slivered papaya and carrots, tomatoes and peanuts in a spicy vinaigrette. It was delicious, but a touch too spicy. When Tirapon asked whether I wanted this dish spicy, I told her just a little bit, and that obviously encouraged her mother to turn up the heat. This was not necessary, although it didn’t spoil our enjoyment of it.For our main courses, we tried the chicken curry with basil and the seafood love’s nest. The curry was exceptional, featuring tender morsels of chicken, along with bean sprouts, green beans and bamboo shoots. The distinctive flavour of fresh basil permeated throughout the dish.It was served with fluffy white rice, rounding out a lightly spiced, subtle dish that was entirely satisfying. The seafood nest was also terrific — a generous helping of mixed seafood with fresh vegetables in a light sauce. The obvious freshness of all the food at Lueur de Mékong more than makes up for the busy café-style atmosphere.By Sunil Mahtani Special to The Record The Mekong River runs between Laos and Thailand.Kwanchai and Phonchai Rangsitratkul blended the ethnic subtleties of the cuisine of these two countries when they married, the former a native of Laos, her husband from Thailand. That union led to the birth of four children and, more recently, their four-year-old restaurant in Granby.Lueur du Mékong, literally the “glimmer of Mekong,” is a thoroughly unpretentious neighbourhood eatery where patrons create their own atmosphere while enjoying traditionally prepared southeast Asian cui-sine from Laos, Thailand and Vietnam. The sparsely decorated restaurant is small and friendly, with bamboo blinds and café curtains on the windows, a few plants here and there and photos of Asia on a folding screen being the main decoration. The service by the owners’ daughter, Tirapon, is warm, the portions hearty and prices cheap, making Lueur du Mékong an “everyday” treat.Patrons bring their own wine as well.I began my Asian adventure with the Tom Yam soup, which contained nice big chunks of chicken in a spicy, clear broth featuring some chopped green onion.Very good as the weather turns colder. My companion started with the spring roll. This was a jumbo, non-fried, rice paper roll stuffed with vermicelli and lettuce and served with a sweet and sour sauce. It was salad fresh and tasty.Since the prices are so reasonable, TALK OF THE Townships —¦¦¦¦¦ " 1 —THE — -" ¦ ¦ .—.— ¦ i.-i.i i ¦ " » November 2-November 8, 2001 page 3 RECORD A fine selection ofi continues this week as Terry Tufts and Kathryn Briggs take the stage on Friday, Nov.2, at 8 p.m.Playing guitar and keyboard, Tufts and Briggs will perform a selection of original and folk music.Accompanying Tufts and Briggs will be C-Section, a trio of three Montreal women.Tufts played the Café last season, and organizers thought bringing him back with the keyboard of Briggs would be a great idea.Briggs began playing piano at seven-years-old, writing her first song at the age of eight.Greatly influenced by the emergence of artists like Tori Amos, Enya and Liz Story, Briggs was encouraged by the growing popularity of women and their pianos, as her writing quickly flourished. In October 2000, Kathryn released her debut album entitled Small Awakenings, produced by Canadian folk treasure, Ian Tamblyn. On the incredible album, listeners find themselves transported to a space of peace and healing.Briggs is currently touring to promote the disk.Meanwhile, Tufts has been playing profes-sionally for three decades. His music is inspired and his lyrics speak straight from the heart. His guitar playing is from the same school that created John Fahey and Leo Kottke: strong melodies supported by uniquely crafted finger-style orchestrations, painting stirring backdrops for some engaging stories.Tufts rapport with the audience is only strengthened by a lightning deftness and a command of the fingerboard that leaves the listener breathless.C-Section.Donna Berry, Isabel Belina, and Evey Miller are a trio of women who sing for the pure joy of singing.Performing their own compositions and arrangements, either a capella or with guitar and percussion accompaniment, C-Section entertains with humor and intelligence. The Church Street Café is located in the hall of piece is born of practicality and portability.“This has to go home after the show,” he chuckled, adding that the ability to disassemble the piece allows it to be moved and stored far easier than if it Heart : tarife ICHPIEL \ ( ; k s ( > Michael Jackson Invincible (Epic) Michael Jackson must sit in a cave in between the releases of his albums and figure out what is going to be popular. On his latest album, entitled Invincible, the king of pop teams up with a variety of artists, including Babyface, Carlos Santana and Brandy, and comes out with an album that, in the end, is vintage Jackson. The songs are more or less all very electronic pop, while the lyrics are rather light. The songs do have enough of the high-pitched wailing to ensure that any Jackson fan will enjoy this album. And although his new songs are far from “Invincible”, Jackson has done enough for the music world to deserve our respect already.-L.E.Pat LaBarbera From The Heart (Justin Time Records) Pat LaBarbera’s latest album, From the Heart, can quite simple be described as a multi-layered musical tapestry woven by talented musicians melding elements of established jazz standards. The quartet is impressive in their art, creating a warm, rich feel on a disc suitable to listen to on a variety of levels. It is sophisticated, yet accessible, upbeat, but not obscure and able to appeal to, and possible entice newcomers to the fascinating world of jazz. The single ‘Dream Steps’, a lively number that will get your toes tapping, is based on past works of Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. Also, ‘Kind of Bill’ is a kind of blue track — a tribute to Bill Evans. The single is refreshingly clean, accompanied by a crisp sound with a haunting performance on sax. Finally, ‘Fantazm’ veers into a rarely heard Ellington composition with a definite eastern feel. From the Heart is truly enticing with melodious harmonies that will get you to replay the disk over and over again.-T.D.t ft tt cr The Rembrandts Lost Together (J-Bird Records) The band who made its name with the theme song for Friends has released another album. At first, Lost Together comes across as a pretty good folk-rock album. While the songs are all a little poppy, the album has a consistent sound. The problem, however is that they are all, for the most part, quite cheesy. They do carry some solid rifts, and are fairly well written. Both members of the band play the guitar and the bass, which ensures a quality diversity to what they play. This diversity, however, does not last long. After a few spins, it becomes hard to tell the songs apart. But that is the risk you take with the sound the Rembrandts play.-L.E.Queensryche Live Evolution Queensryche, a Seattle-based heavy metal band, has followed the path of every successful and not-so-successful band by recently releasing a live album entitled Live Evolution. The disk features no new tracks—just a double CD that allegedly traces their history in a two night concert from Seattle.A single disk likely could have traced their history more accurately while not sounding as repetitive as they do.Nevertheless, the hard guitar and screaming vo- QfjCzfc.norv Y Ujr> cals, supported by loud drums and bass are the backbone of this bands recordings, and come through ever so strongly in their live music. The live format also features something other albums can’t: it provides a soapbox for the lead singer to stand on.His rants between, and in the middle of songs are quite funny, bringing back memories of Kiss’: “You wanted the best, you got the best!” -L.E.Steps Buzz (Zomba/Jive Records) Lisa, Lee, Faye, Claire and H will take you into their truly fun, fluffy candy floss music with their latest creation, Buzz.Check your head and leave it behind as the album draws you into a mix of pop, dance, disco and then some. This UK outfit has been together since 1997, but boast only one other recording to their credit. In Ace of Base meets ABBA, most of the tracks on Buzz are dance oriented, with a couple slower songs including ‘It’s the Way You Make Me Feel’, ‘Mars & Venus’ and ‘Hand on Your Heart’.The songs are nice, mellow numbers, though unremarkable and unrevolutionary. What Steps has to its advantage is that their music and lyrics are a bit different than what is being played these days on popular radio. It would appear that Steps has gone backwards, and borrowed elements from older dance, house, disco and even a shade of techno.- T.D.Various Artists What’s Going On (Playton e/Colum bia) What’s Going On features some cool and not-so-cool people doing some very cool things. On the disk, more than 31 artists united in a ‘We Are The World’ fashion to rerecord nine very different versions of Marvin Gaye’s ‘What’s Going On’.The artists who appear range from Perry Farrell to Fred Durst and Bono to P.Diddy and Destiny’s Child to The Backstreet Boys to NSYNC.Each version of the song is different from the next, ranging from a hip-hop version to open the album, to the “London Version”, which features a lot of Bono. There is even a hard rock version, which features Farrell and Durst. The proceeds from What’s Going On will be donated to Artists TALK OF THE TwmhlpS " " —- ¦¦THE» .November 2-November 8, 2001 page 7 A world of adventure, comedy and drama awaits movies Dern stars in ‘disturbing’ study of anti-Semitism By Jamie Portman Southam News Most moviegoers will always think of Laura Dern as the intrepid dinosaur expert in two of the Jurassic Park movies. She’s cheerfully resigned to that fact: “To kids I’m the dinosaur lady who sticks her hand in dinosaur poop!” But in the industry, she’s known for far more than these two enormous popcorn hits. She’s also recognized as an actress who takes chances outside of the Hollywood mainstream It happened with her work as Nicolas Cage’s white-trash girlfriend in David Lynch’s Wild at Heart; with her Oscar-nominated portrayal of a sexually guileless southern gal in Rambling Rose; and her work as a pregnant, paint-sniffing junkie in Citizen Ruth. And it’s happening again with two new movies. One is Focus, which starts arriving Nov.9 in Canada and deals with anti-Semitism in the U.S.during the Second World War; it proved to be one of the most unsettling assignments of her career. The other is the darkly comedic Novocaine, which opens Nov.16.“I’m still exploring life from moment to moment,” the 34-year-old actress says by phone from Los Angeles, “but in the last few years I would say that my life looks and feels completely different. My sense of understanding, my desires as an actor are not the same.” Part of her new sensibility is shaped by her relationship with musician Ben Harper.“I have found someone I can truly consider a partner and I truly feel in love for the first time in my life” - and by the fact that on Aug.21 they became the parents of a son, Ellery.“So I now have this remarkable being that has entered my world.” Professionally, the yearning to seek out new characters and scripts continues.“I want to grow and expand, but as we go through life, we want to grow in different areas and directions.” Her parents, actors Bruce Dern and Diane Ladd, have been great influences.“My dad inspired me to play many different people and keep myself guessing and audiences guessing, because that’s the fun of acting.” Even so, a movie like Focus, which is based on an early Arthur Miller novel, became a painful emotional challenge.“When I read the script, I realized there were several lines I had to say in the movie that were extremely disturbing -lines that 1 had a really hard time saying.” For example, there’s the moment when she and William H.Macy, playing a newly married couple, are turned away by a restricted resort hotel which has as- SOUTHAM Laura Dern plays Gert Newman, wife of a timid company personnel officer assigned to uphold the firm's anti-Semitic hiring practices when all goes wrong in Focus, which hits theatres on Nov.9.sumed they are Jewish.“Nobody makes a Jew out of me and gets away with it!” Dern’s character snarls angrily.Dern was appalled by the line.“But if I can’t force myself to say lines I never want to hear, then how can I as an actor look at all sides of humanity?” she asks. The film is an ironic fable featuring Macy as a Lawrence Newman, a timid company personnel officer assigned to uphold the firm’s racist and anti-Semitic hiring practices. But when he acquires a pair of glasses, he is removed from his position because they now make him look too “Jewish.” He also lands in trouble in his own Brooklyn neighbourhood when others bracket him with the Jewish newsdealer (David Paymer) on the corner — a man who is already suffering persecution.Newman compounds his problem by marrying the brassy Gert (Dern), a woman to whom he once denied employment because he thought she was Jewish and who is now assumed to be Jewish by a neighbourhood which is determined to get rid of them both.“I had never read a book or seen a film which so specifically addressed anti-Semitism in our country during the war.Miller is an incredibly direct, hard-hitting writer. He takes no prisoners. But he also has compassion for the characters and empathy for them as opposed to just judging them.” Dern thinks one of the film’s strengths is that the audience is specifically left in the dark about the actual religious background of the two main characters.“Arthur Miller leaves it very open. You don’t really know my character’s ethnic background, her religious background. Is she lying about her past because she actually is Jewish?Or is it simply that she does-n’t want anybody to perceive her as Jewish?” She says the lethal point of the story is that these are two characters who simply don’t want to be forced into taking a moral stand: they want to blend in with their community, no matter how viciously prejudiced that community is.In that context, their true background becomes irrelevant.Dern is more conscious of the underlying implications of Focus in the wake of the events of Sept.11.She talks of the importance of a movie which recognize the “dynamics” of religious prejudice and fear.“There’s so much terror for all of us right now,” she says. But she adds that people can become “fear-based” for reasons beyond the threat of terrorist bombings or anthrax; they can be fear-based because of the presence of people from another religious or ethnic background or because they themselves come from such backgrounds.” Her other new film, Novocaine, is a different proposition.Steve Martin plays a Chicago dentist who becomes ensnared by the feminine wiles of a new patient played by Helena Bonham Carter and finds his life coming apart as a result.Dern plays his neurotic hygienist fiancee.“I thought Novocaine was an incredibly smart and very irreverent dark comedy. This was certainly a character I’d never played before. She’s incredibly, disturbingly anal and obsessive compulsive.I’ve never before played someone who thinks she’s perfect and tries to be perfect with every move she makes.“I usually play people who embrace their imperfections. So to play someone who’s Miss Perfect Perfect Perfect and won’t settle for even one millimetre less -that certainly is great fun and disturbing.1 had to go extremely far into a world where I had never gone before. And I had Steve Martin as my co-star.He’s brilliant and lovely and gracious as well as hysterically funny.” Ci n m 3 III V» ill Vinl 4-204, boul, Bertrand-Fabi MOVIE INFO 821-9999 SHOWTIMES EFFECTIVE NOVEMBER 2nd TO 8th MON VAILLANT PRIMATE 2 (G) Frt-5aU305.1605.18:30 Sun: 1305, 1605 AU VOLANT AVEC L6S GARS (G) Fri-sati 51:50 Sun: 18 50,51,50 Mon-Thu, 13:40.18:50, 51:50 LE FABULEUX DESTIN D'AMÉLIE POULAIN (G+not recommended to young children) Frt-Sun-.12:40, 15:40, 18:40,21:20 Mon-Thu: 13:40, 18.40,21.20 13 FANTÔMES (13* violence) Fr: Sun, 15:55.1555.1855,51:35 Mon-Thu, 1355,1855,51:35 LE SEUL ( 13 y) Fri-Sun: 12:50, 15:50.18:50,21 35 Mon-Thu: 13:50, 18:50,21:35 LE DERNIER CHÂTEAU ( 13 y) Frt-Sun 12 30.18:30 Mon-Thu 13 30.18 30 l HOMME QUI VIENT DE LOIN (G) Frt-Sun: 1235.15:35, 18.35.21:25 Mor>-Tha 13:35, 18 35.2125 SORTI D€ L6NFCR ( 13 ?Violence) Fft-Sur* 15:45,15:45, 1845,51:40 Mon-Thu 1345, 18:45,5140 VIRÉE D ENFER ( 13 ?Violence) Frt-Sun: 16:00,21:40 Mon-Thu: 21:40 DRAME FAMILIAL Fri-Sun: 13.00.1600, 19:00,2125 Moo-Tho: 14.00, 19:00.21:25 MONSTRES, INC.(G) FN-Sun 15 30, 15:00, 1715,19:50.51:50 Mon-Thu 1345.19:50,51:50 TALK OF THEToTPtlshipS page 8 November 2-November 8, 2001 TALK I?J Friday Saturday 6:00 PM (3) CD O E (22 News B Canada Now B Le TVA 18 heures I2D Judge Judy (N) Q) Simpsons I33l Newshour With Jim Lehrer a BBC World News F.T-1 I Night Court IAT»1 Montreal Jazz Festival [H.'l.'l Moneyline (N) I¦]HH Crocodile Hunter IiIMI Odysseys: Canada’s Maritime History Hli4 Animal Miracles lAVl International Newsfirst fliM'.'l F/X: The Series HH Stephen King - Master of Macabre H.'l.'l Miami Vice IHJ Off the Record.(N) I’Ll .’I Road to Avonlea Ht'l Sailor Moon 6:30 PM CD NBC Nightly News B Canada Now Q Ultimatum B (221 ABC World News Tonight ID Global National (29) Judge Judy (N) ED King of the Hill (Part 2 of 2) QJ Nightly Business Report F.T-14 Newsradio I !
