love for music iCGC PERRY BEATON/SPECIAL Bishop’s University music professor Andrew MacDonald has much to his resume, most recently 60 minutes of music to accompany Bishop s Drama department's play Andromecha. From composing to the guitar, MacDonald’s love for music has brought him international acclaim.By Trida Davidson Record Correspondent Lennoxville Bishop’s University music professor Andrew MacDonald is bound to his labour of love for music, proven with a plethora of compositions, performances world-wide and recordings spanning well over a decade. Most recently, his efforts have focused on composing 60 minutes of music for Andromecha, the current drama production at Bishop’s, playing through to Sunday, Nov.25 in the Studio Theatre.“Jonathan Rittenhouse is the director, and he asked me this summer if I’d be interested in collaborating,” explained MacDonald.“He knew I had done research into Ancient Greek techniques, and lectured on the subject, with a focus on the melodies and compositional techniques.“Initially, it was to be just for the choruses which were danced and sung.We knew that some of the more important speeches were given as arias.I picked out two of the more notable speeches, set them as arias and also created an over- ture.” Bom in Ontario, MacDonald took his Bachelor of Music with Honours in Guitar Performance at the University of Western Ontario.Later, he completed his Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts in Composition at the University of Michigan before coming to Bishop’s in 1987.In addition to teaching and chairing the Department of Music, MacDonald is also the founder and past artistic director of the Ensemble Musica Nova.See MacDonald, Page 6 SS - ___ Look What’s Inside CD Reviews: Creed, Billy Bang, Bandits Soundtrack, Kittie, is a Townships tradition dining out Finding comfort in home-cooked food By Susan Semenak Southam News Shrimp-filled wontons, lotus-root soup and more dumplings than a family could eat in a month — Silvia Kam says her mother hasn’t cooked with so much gusto since she and her brother and sisters were ldds.“It’s that we’ve been getting together more often than usual,” remarked Kam, a 25-year-old Dawson College student who also works at the family grocery store her uncle owns in Chinatown.“We’ve always been a close family. But these days, we want to be even closer than ever,” she said.“And eating together is a big part of it.” Seeking respite from terrorist threats, anthrax scares and the economic slump, there’s always comfort in home-cooked food, whether it’s a steaming bowl of chicken • come and enjoy die relating atmosphere of an English pub.*.' 5 Mo Bock (Serge), Lubomir Mykytiuk (Marc) and Harry Standjofski (Yvan) give remarkable performances in Greg Kramer’s (below) adaptation ofYasmina Reza’s Tony award-winning Art at the Centaur Theatre in Montreal.Townshipper chosen to direct award-winning play By Sunil Mahtani Special to The Record Greg Kramer is on top of the world. The director-actor who’s worked at Theatre Lac Brome in Knowlton for the past three summers is currently making his Centaur Theatre directing debut with the international hit Art.The comedy written by Parisian playwright Yasmina Reza was not easy for Centaur to land.Artistic director Gordon McCall tried for four years to acquire the rights to perform it in Montreal. Finally, he succeeded and called Kramer in to direct.“I didn’t have to think about it much.I knew people wanted to see it,” Kramer quipped. The job also marks his directing debut at Centaur, thrusting Kramer onto the centre stage of the Montreal theatre scene.Although productions of Art have played around the world in both French and English — even winning the 1998 Tony Award for Best Play — Kramer said he’d never been able to see it.Now in the midst of a successful run of the English-language Montreal premiere of the play, Kramer said that as he read and studied the piece, he realized the play offered something different.“It’s a play masquerading as a sitcom,” he said.“It pretends to fit into a format we’re very familiar with by watching television, but it doesn’t.” The basic premise of the three-character comedy certainly sounds like a sitcom: When Serge (Mo Bock) spends an exorbitant amount of money on an all- white painting, his best friend Marc (Lubomir Mykytiuk) hits the roof.Their ensuing confrontation over this piece of art has hilarious and devastating results. While Yvan (Harry Standjofski), who rounds out the trio, doesn’t comprehend what all the fuss is about, the painting and all that it uncovers puts their very friendship on the line. From the broad strokes of this premise, Reza paints a much deeper picture.“.Yasmina Reza has pulled off the seeming miraculous,” Kramer writes in his director’s notes for the play.“She has managed to transform a superficial argument into one that has potency; and at the same time, she has turned the heartbreaking situation of a broken friendship into something truly hilarious.” Kramer said the play constantly pulls the rug out from under the feet of audiences.“That which you think is worthy of attention turns out not worthy. It’s a play about a painting, but it’s not a play about a painting. It plays with our expectations.” The 40-year-old director said one of the most commendable aspects of the play is that the characters change.“They’re not easily definable. You can’t say, ‘he’s the optimist, ‘he’s the pessimist’.This is about the nature of relationships. It’s a great lesson about the changing nature of ourselves,” said Kramer.“Yvan is the biggest example of this.It is possible to say, T like it’ today’ and T hate it’ tomorrow without compromising yourself.Society says, ‘please get in your little box and stick with it.’ Human beings are not like that. We’re a paradox.” The three actors bring years of experience to the Centaur stage.Mo Bock, who has appeared in Centaur's Driving Miss Daisy and The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, brings an icy veneer to Serge; and Lubomir Mykytiuk, a longtime star of CBC-TV’s North of 60, plays Marc full of angst and anxiety. But it is Harry Standjofski, a regular at The Piggery in Ste-Catherine-de-Hatley who starred in Lend Me A Tenor and Bedside Manners, who gives the most fully realized performance. His Yvan is a likable yet troubled regular Joe who wants to escape the tedium of daily life and spend an evening with his two buddies.Of course, the other two soon turn against him and Standjofski’s nuanced performance, including some impressive facial acrobatics, shines above the others. The cold, austere set featuring shades of black and white by John C.Dinning and the evocative lighting by Luc Prairie are also superlative.Kramer said “one huge challenge was to be able to work with experienced actors and not be ignored, actors who might go, ‘no no, I'm going to do it my way,’ and ‘what’s this young whipper- snapper doing?’ I managed to overcome this.” And to great effect. His production of Art is naturalistic, building slowly to an emotional climax. His ideas such as adding music in between the monologues and overlapping two monologues, work extremely well.He was able to elicit three solid performances from his actors and present a play that is unified yet offers three distinct opinions.Townshippers will not be surprised by his talent.Kramer directed a stunning production of Travels With My Aunt last summer and brought Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest into the 21st century with much success.Since moving to Canada from his native England in 1981, Kramer has worked on more than 100 productions. He is also a regular on the TV series The Neverend-ing Story, Forever Knight and Once A Thief.Kramer’s next project is directing the students of Concordia University in Julius Caesar during the Ides of March.Art by Yasmina Reza, translated by Christopher Hampton, directed by Greg Kramer, plays at Centaur Theatre in Old Montreal through November 23-November 29, 2001 page 5 TALK OF THE Townships ' ¦ THE¦ RECORD Sounds to soothe the savage beast CD Reviews Listeners get a bang for their buck with ‘Vietnam’ JAKAJAKAYAH smooth voice on the tracks, but her vocal cords are often left aside to allow a repetitive techno rhythm bounce on the speakers. One thing is certain: this album would have had no potential of hitting the North American charts if it had been recorded in English.Overall, the album is pleasant, but any other pop group could have offered a similar performance. It still makes great dancing music.-D.H.JAKAJAKAYAH Self-titled BMG Poland Polish star Jakajakayah’s recently released self-titled album is on Canadian shelves for those who like commercial pop in foreign languages.Although pleasant to the ear, this album fails to innovate in the realm of electronic music.Singer Kayah certainly manages to transmit a Billy Bang Vietnam the Aftermath (Justin Time Records) This is, quite simply, a phenomenal album.Violinist and Vietnam War veteran Billy Bang composed all of the songs in an attempt to come to terms with his experiences in that war.The end result is an eastern-influenced jazz album that brings in all sorts of styles from the hectic conditions of the war. This album at times feels like Miles Davis’ work in 1969, a violin concerto, the Kabuki Orchestra, and a Medeski, Martin and Wood show all rolled into one.The album also features five other Vietnam War veterans and two other musicians that back up Bang’s impressive violinplaying.Additonally, Curtis Lundy plays a very solid bass, and the drums hold the pieces together.Anyone willing to experiment with their music listening should pick up this album.- L.E.Kittie Oracle (Artemis Records) Kittie is a band of three Canadian women who seem to be trying to perform like men — or they are at least trying to be Satan’s witches.Oracle features gut-wrenching bass and guitar, backed by some powerful drumming. The singer clearly does have a good voice, but unfortunately she doesn’t use it often enough. The majority of the album is left to feature her unleashing an extremely throaty wail, reminiscent of Rob Zombie and Man of War.Perhaps it is the style that I object to, but this album has very little originality. It is a sound produced by countless bands. The album, however, does offer an interesting interpretation of Pink Floyd’s ‘Run Like Hell’, but even this song is spoiled by the lead singer’s constant wailing.-L.E.Creed Weathered (Sony) Whether hardened by international stardom, a multi-platinum, award winning album or its countless number one hits, Creed’s music on the much anticipated follow-up album, Weathered, is as pure and refined as any contemporary rock music on airwaves today.Yet, as the disk’s name suggests, what distinguishes Creed from its counterparts is its complete rock/alternative sound, sometimes with a hard metal edge, is that while reminiscent of prior singles like ‘Higher’ and ‘With Arms Wide Open’, this is simply better. For example, take the single ‘My Sacrifice’, which has been brilliantly featured in a series of WWF wrestling promotional commercials.Words like awesome, brilliant, emotional and unbelievable first come to mind, and that’s only after a first listen.Yet expressions like storied, developed and enduring also describe a single that carries an already powerful lineup that includes notable singles like ‘Hide’ and ‘Don’t Stop Dancing’.Made up of Scott Stapp on lyrics and vocals, Mark Tremonti on guitars and bass and Scott Phillips on drums and keyboards, Creed just sounds great on one of the best albums released this year.-J.Z.Various Artists Bandits Robert Plant, playing the Led Zeppelin classic ‘Gallows Pole’, the soudtrack also features a new Dylan number, ‘Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum’.The rasp of Dylan’s voice only gets better with time. There are a;sp a couple of numbers from the 80’s on the album, most notably Bonnie Tyler’s ‘Holding Out For a Hero’ and Tanita Tikaram’s ‘Twist in My Sobriety’.The best thing about these tracks is that they are not the 80’s tunes played at the growing number of ‘retro’ nights. The album also features very solid numbers by Peter Yorn and Mark Knopfler. There is even a song that is getting a lot of air time on today’s radio stations — Five For Fighting’s ‘Superman (It’s Not Easy)’ is a very good number. It is hard to believe it was written recently, and even harder to believe that it is hugely popular.Overall, this is a good compilation album, with a lot of different styles.-LE.Dope Life (Epic/Flip) Fortitude for reverberating raucous music is a prerequisite for listening to Dope’s latest, entitled Life.Formerly Slaves on Dope, a Canadian band, Dope are now achieving moderate success stateside touring with the likes of Alice Cooper, Orgy, Slipknot and Canadian metal band Kittie. From the first track, entitled ‘Take Your Best Shot, I’d expected to be throttled all the way through the CD.However, the rest of the album is certainly not going to knock your teeth in.If hard rock verging on metal doesn’t turn your crank , the grinding guitar, beating bass, pounding percussion and voracious vocals won’t get you going.“What About.” is a nice, moderate track with some good bass playing.Other than that, however, I really wish they would have kept the style of the first track going throughout rather than reverting to something that sounds similar to other neo-metal bands with a modern rock radio friendly sound.-T.D.(Columbia/Sony) This is a cool collection of numbers from a variety of musicians, ranging from Bob Dylan to Bonnie Tyler to Five for Fighting.Starting with numbers by 60’s and 70’s icons Jimmy Page and — THF — ¦ RECORD .i » ¦¦ n — 1 Michel Duval .^ i TALK OF THE TwmhlpS ¦ ¦' — - ¦¦THE» - November 23-November 29, 2001 page 7 A world of adventure, comedy and drama awaits movies Hackman still going strong at 71 SOUTHAM Gene Hackman, 71, isn't slowing down in his old age, staring in two movies before the end of the year, notably the action thriller Behind Enemy Lines, hitting theatres Nov.30.By Jamie Portman Southam News Eleven years ago.Gene Hackman had a serious health scare when he underwent emergency angioplasty surgery to prevent a potentially fatal coronary attack. The crisis came following a punishing work schedule which had seen the veteran actor do nine movies over a two-year period. It was then that he vowed to slow down.So how well has Hackman been keeping that promise?Well, consider what’s happening this autumn. He has just opened in The Heist, a crafty caper thriller in which the 71-year-old Oscar winner plays the embattled leader of a high-stakes robbery plot.In December, The Royal Tenenbaums, filmmaker Wes Anderson’s quirky comedy-drama about a family of geniuses goes into release, and Hackman is already being touted for an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of an eccentric family patriarch.More immediately, there is the Nov.30 premiere of another action thriller, Behind Enemy Lines, in which Hackman plays a veteran admiral who leads a dangerous rescue mission after American pilot Owen Wilson is shot down in Bosnia.Three movies in a row: is this what Hackman calls “taking it easy?” He laughs at the question.“For me it’s slower!” he says cheerfully. Then he turns reflective.“I don’t know.I still have that old thing in me from the early days where you couldn’t get a job so you had to take everything that’s offered to you.but I do want to slow down and stop if I can.” Hackman calls across the room to his agent: “Am I getting fewer parts sent to me?” His agent responds with an emphatic no.Unlike some senior movie stars, Hack-man shows no signs of being uptight about his age.In fact, he goes out of his way to tell this morning’s press conference that he’ll soon be 72.In any event, there are still glimpses in this stocky septuagenarian of the teenager who lied about his age more than half a century ago in order to enlist in the marine corps.Furthermore, although Hackman is now a senior citizen, he’s clearly not one to back down from a confrontation. That much is evident from the events of Oct.30 when his Volvo sedan collided with a Volvo station wagon on busy Sunset Boulevard.Hackman at first kept Iris cool when the other driver started verbally abusing him.But then, according to witnesses, the actor hauled off and slugged his attacker - not once but several times.“That was kind of an infamous day for me,” Hackman says sheepishly.“It’s one of those things that happens to people in these times.Everybody’s a little upset and angry about a variety of things.Road rage is something that we all live with.We have to deal with it in various ways, and in retrospect you think you should have handled things differently — but there it is.” Hackman says he’s a quiet, peace-loving man who has lived for two decades in New Mexico where he is able to pursue his favourite leisure occupations of painting, sculpting and reading. But on the screen, it’s his tough guy persona that has won him his two Academy Awards - as the sadistic sheriff in Unforgiven and as obsessed, drug-busting cop Popeye Doyle in The French Connection.Hackman also plays a tough guy in Behind Enemy Lines - a patriotic American prepared to ignore NATO command in order to rescue an American flyer in trouble. The Fox studio had originally planned to release the movie next year, but moved the date forward in the wake of the Sept.11 terror attacks.Hackman hopes the film will find an audience both inside and outside the U.S.“It’s a film that I think is sympathetic to U.S.positions in a lot of areas,” he said.“We are put into a variety of boxes that we have to fight our way out of, and I think this film kind of exemplifies the best of the ldnd of American films that are done in terms of the military.” After Hackman moved into middle age, Hollywood started viewing him as the quintessential aging military hero.So in a sense, his casting in Behind Enemy Lines is a logical follow-up to his roles in Crimson Tide and Uncommon Valor.“I don’t go out of my way to do military characters, but I’ve done a few and I suppose I look like one of those guys,” he laughs. He also suggests that Hollywood casting people aren’t particularly imaginative.“People in this town tend to cast to type .I think films are cast so close to type that it’s really hard to break out of that mould that you’re in,” Hackman said.“Hopefully, you can modify things to some degree, but there are certain things people just wouldn’t think of me for.I think I could play anything, but of course every actor thinks that!” In point of fact, Hackman has shown himself capable of talcing on a variety of roles — the anguished surveillance man in The Conversation, the basketball coach in Hoosiers, the stuffy right-wing senator in The Birdcage. The Royal Tenenbaums, which starts going into release in late December in time to qualify for The Oscars, offers him a further opportunity to show off his versatility. He plays an eccentric, self-absorbed New Yorker named Royal Tenenbaum, a man who seeks to end his estrangement from the family he has put through hell, and who, in so doing, sets off an unexpected chain of events.Hackman shares the screen with an all-star ensemble cast which includes Ben Stiller, Gwyneth Paltrow, Luke Wilson, Danny Glover, Owen Wilson and Angelica Huston.Cinéma 4204, boul, Bertrand-Fabi MOVIE INFO 821-9999 5HOWTIME5 EFFECTIVE NOVEMBER 23rd TO 29th MONSTRES INC (G) Fri-Sun 12 30.15:00, 1715, 19:20.21 20 Mon-Wed: 1345, 19:20,21 20 Thu: 1345 HARRY POTTER t> THE PHILOSOPHER'S STONE (G)FirSun: 12 15.15.45, 19.-30 Mon-Thu: 13:15 19 30 NO PASSES ACCEPTED HAL LE SUPERFICIEL (G) fo-Sun 12:55, 15:55, 18:55,21:30 Mon 13:55 Tuc-Thu: 13:55.18:55,2130 JEUX D’ESPIONNAGE Fri-Sun: 1245, 1545, 1845.21 25 Mon-Thu 1345.1845, zi as CHEVALIER NOIR Fri-Sun' 1300 16.00 1900,21:25 Mon-Thu: 1400.1900,21:25 HARRY POTTER À LéCOLE DES SORCIERS (G) Fri-5un 11:30,13:30, 15:00, 17:00, 18:30.20:30,21 40 Mon-Thu 12.30, 13:30.16:15.1830,20:30,2140 NO PASSES ACCEPTED LE VOL ( 1 3 y) fri-Sun 12 40 18 40 Mon-Thu: 13:40, 18.40 LE SEUL C 13 y) Frt-Sun: 1550,21 35 Mon-Thu 21:35 5at„ 24th 6 Sun, 25th November at I0OQ SHREK (French version) Profit to the CHUS Foundation Admission $2 TALK OF THE Townships page 8 November 23-November 29, 2001 Record TALK r rid ay | Saturday 6:00 PM CD CD ID (9 News 0 Canada Now O Le TVA 18 heures S3 Judge Judy (N) ID Simpsons @3 Newshour With Jim Lehrer 0 BBC World News Q2§ Murder, She Wrote ITVil Montreal Jazz Festival [H,'L’I Moneyline EHj) Crocodile Hunter i:im Odysseys: Canada’s Maritime History IHd4 Animal Miracles IA VI International Newsfirst HE'r.'J FIX: The Series OB Junkyard Wars u'l’l Star Trek: The Next Generation (Part 1 of 2) iCTl Off the Record.(N) rrm Road to Avon lea t'lPi Sailor Moon 6:30 PM (D NBC Nightly News Q Canada Now 0 Ultimatum 0) Global National (13 Judge Judy (N) SI King of the Hill 0 Nightly Business Repor i:im Scattering of Seeds: The Creation of Canada itl'.'l News TV: Russia and Mexico FTTH Sports centre.l'ài'i Generation O! 7:00 PM CD CBS Evening News CD Jeopardy! 0 Our Hero (N) 0 J.E.(N) 0 Wheel of Fortune 0 Bob and Margaret (N) (9 Access Hollywood (N) 13 King of the Hill H3 Everybody Loves Raymond 0 Just Shoot Me @3 Nightly Business Report 0 Newshour With Jim Lehrer rm Murder, She Wrote PITH BravolVideos tHk’ltl Wolf Blitzer Reports 1 'im At Discovery.ca Him Tour of Duty Ptm Goods I AVI International Newsfirst EU33 North of 60 fTTR Junkyard Wars n.'i.'i Star Trek: The Next Generation (Part 2 of 2) That’s Hockey.(N) Cosby Show ESQ Hit List 7:30 PM CD 0 Entertainment Tonight CD Wheel of Fortune 0 Mr.Bean O Jeopardy! ra Entertainment Forum m S3 Frasier 0 Seinfeld S3 Vermont This Week PPni Movietelevision ihaa Crossfire mat Weird Homes mV!
