Linda Galeazzi Record Correspondent Ste-Cath e ri n e-d e-Hatley /Xalian American Reconciliation. No, don’t worry, it’s not some complicated political strategy. It’s actually the title of the Piggery’s latest offering in summer theatre.Reconciliation is a poignant and hilarious comedy written by John Patrick Shanley, who is best known for the Academy Award-winning screenplay from Moonstruck.Reconciliation also illustrates that there is always more to a love story than meets the eye.The fun begins when Huey Maximil-lian Bonfigliano (Blair Haynes) attempts to regain his power to love after an acrimonious break-up with his ex-wife, Janice (Margot Dionne). With the help of his best friend, Aldo (Harry Standjofski), Huey concocts a plan to win Janice back, believing somehow that this will help him to better understand himself. It’s Aldo’s job to butter up Janice for her ex-husband’s romantic reconciliation.Sounds simple enough, right? It isn’t.In order to woo Janice, a character described as “fork tongued and cloven hoofed”, Huey must first dump his girl- friend, Teresa (Michele Muzzi). The problems caused by this situation add to the bittersweet hilarity of the play.“On the surface, Huey and Aldo are trying to figure out what love is,” Stand-jofski says, “but more specifically, they’re learning about their ability or inability to love. Why can’t Aldo find a girl and settle down? Why does Huey want to be with Janice when we know that nothing is ever easy with Janice? They’re learning why they are the way they are.” The bond that exists between the two male characters, Huey and Aldo, is central to the play’s love story.Their friendship intensifies during Huey’s wooing of Janice and it gives the men safe ground upon which to explore, at least, their ability to care for one anther.“Because of the situation they’re in,” Standjofski continues, “because of the passion Huey brings and the heightened stakes he brings into the entire situation, the men are allowed to express feelings for each other, they can express what it is men feel. You see that, underneath it all, underneath the macho posturing of whatever, Huey and Aldo are regular guys, and successful and acclaimed run with the play five years ago, first at the Sunshine Theatre in Kelowna, B.C.and later at Western Canada Theatre Company in Kamloops.Apparently, the experience of working together was rewarding enough that Tuck says, “I knew that if I couldn’t reconvene these particular actors, 1 probably wouldn’t do the play.” Standjofski was game.Even Haynes, who was in Western Canada at the time, couldn’t resist the opportunity to come to Quebec and reprise the character of Huey.“1 was delighted,” he says, “not just because of the character, but because this is such a great play. It’s one that I really don’t mind playing again and again and again.” The devotion that the actors and director feel towards the characters is obvious.“I love and respect these characters,” Tuck says as Haynes and Standjofski nod in agreement.“If I didn’t, if the actors didn’t, then what right would we have to stick them in front of See Piggery, page 2 FAMOUS PLAYERS PERRY difficult to love and respect them.” Creating complex, almost heroic characters and disguising them in the clothes of the Everyman is a forte of playwright Shanley’s.Though the play takes place in New York’s Little Italy district, Shanley creates an almost mythical microcosm in which his characters can, in Tuck’s words, “become larger than life.Everyone in the play is like a character from a fairy tale.Suddenly these ordinary people, ordinary characters, in their ordinary situations and circumstances, become parts of a much larger, ‘Once upon a time’ fairy tale.” With Dionne, Muzzi and Maggie Muir (as Teresa’s Aunt May) rounding out the cast, preparations began to bring this urban fairy tale to life.Audiences will marvel, first of all, at the stunning set, which was designed by John Dinning.Dinning succeeds brilliantly in combining the gritty reality of New York City with the magical elements of the Little Italy of Shanley’s imagination. The set looks, quite literally, like a three-dimensional image we see in a child’s pop-up book. You’ll notice the New York cityscape with its high rises and skyscrapers in the background, but the characters come to life on a centre stage occupied by buildings and balconies that are reminiscent of the castle towers and romantic turrets of Rapun-zel or Sleeping Beauty. The effect is oddly surreal and powerful. The “fourth wall” that normally keeps a distance between audience and characters is broken down further as Standjofski, as Aldo, narrates the story directly to the audience.Consequently, the audience is more intimately involved with what the characters do and has a greater interest in what will happen to them.“Harry does a great job of bringing the audience in,” says Haynes.“And once he brings them in, he keeps them there.” “We’re bringing something to life on this stage,” Tuck says.“It’s something magical, it’s very much like a fairy tale.” But Tuck concedes there are some universal truths that everyone can relate to in Reconciliation, particularly on the subject of love. For example, you might wonder why Huey wants to reunite with his ex-wife, a woman one character says should be sitting on a mountaintop drinking blood from a skull. But you’ll understand Huey’s reasons better when you see them in their simpler context.“How many times have you been with someone and then, in retrospect, wondered what the hell you were doing with that person?” Tuck asks.“That’s essentially something that Huey is figuring out with Janice.By pursuing her, he confronts himself. And until he can go back and set things right with her, he can’t really move ahead.” It’s this need to understand the past and bravely attempt to set things right that makes the play so funny and fascinating.Huey’s pursuit of Janice has less to do with unrequited love or promise unfulfilled than it does with one man’s need to set things straight for once and for all.“Huey has just come to a point where he knows that he must woo his ex-wife again,” Haynes adds, “This is the only thing he feels he can do in order to get on with his life.Huey wants to recover what they had that was once good, but that got hurt in a mystic series of events during the course of their marriage. It becomes important to Huey to figure it out so that he can continue with his mission in life by getting back something that got lost.” But if Reconciliation is an urban fairy tale, then it’s one turned hilariously upside down. With a wry smile and to the delight of the actors.Tuck improvises his own narration: “Once upon a time, there was a world that was out of order. All the vegetables were yellow; the cows couldn’t give milk. And one day, Huey Max-imillian Bonfigliano had an idea: he decided to set the world in it’s proper order.” Don’t miss your chance to share in the magic of Italian-American Reconciliation. The play previewed last night at the Piggery and will run until Aug.23.Show times are Tuesday through Saturdays at 8:30 p.m.with matinees on Wednesday at 2 p.m.and Saturdays at 4 p.m.Ticket prices range from $15.50 to $19 (plus tax), with special rates for groups. For reservations, contact the Piggery box office at (819) 842-2431.By Rick sings about environment By Cathy Watson Record Correspondent Stanstead With songs about rock cycles, ground water and wetlands, singer-songwriter Chris Rawlings creates children’s music with a definite twist.Rawlings writes lyrics that teach as they entertain.Kids - and most adults for that matter - learn new terms like ‘igneous’ (fiery) and ‘magma’ (molten rock deep in the earth) while they’re snapping their fingers to a lively beat.“It’s a unique subject matter that, as far as I know, hasn’t been tackled by anybody,” said Rawlings, a native Montrealer now living in Toronto who summers in Stanstead.“I’ve been focusing on children’s music for about 10 or 12 years.I had been hoping to do the album and applying for grants for it.” After a considerable wait, the Canadian Geological Foundation came through and Rawlings hit the studio and wrapped up his album, Rocks and Water, in an unbelievable two months. With some background vocals by his 10-year-old’s elementary school class and some students from the alternative school where his wife, Lynne, teaches, Rawlings came up with a product he’s proud of.The songs on the album were written over a three-year period - either for the Children’s Ground Water Festival at the Ontario Agricultural Museum or for Mariposa in the Schools, an organization which Rawlings works with, playing his music throughout the southern Ontario school system.Only the final song, “Earth Chant”, was written earlier than the others.“I wrote it eight or 10 years ago.It was the first environmental-wildlife song I wrote,” Rawlings said. The ballad does indeed stand out on the album. Its gentle folk guitar rhythm, combined with echoing lyrics and intertwining flute and recorder, give it more depth musically and emotionally then the other 12 cuts on the recording.Although the album runs a gamut of styles from jazz to rock, the strongest influence is folk, not surprisingly since Rawlings began his musical career playing the style.“I was really interested in traditional music.Tire Kingston Trio and Peter, Paul and Mary were in vogue at that time, so a lot of what I got from learning the guitar was traditional music,” he said.“It was a great revelation to me, at about the age of 15, that people actually wrote songs.I thought, ‘If they can do it, 1 can do it’.” CATHY WATSON/CORRESPONDENT Environmental songwriter Chris Rawlings finds plenty of inspiration living on a farm in the Eastern Townships during the summer «*5 - * ¦ 4 Æ 'Mé Ati- * Æ * ipfp* Rawlings started playing music with Acadian musician Gilles Losier.“We played a lot of festivals: Winnipeg, Mariposa, Bulgaria, France.” His music led him to New Orleans, where he played at a club called Andy’s on Bourbon Street, in 1969.It was also on that trip that he found his pride and joy - a 60-year-old Gibson guitar.“I was sitting on a friend’s steps, playing his guitar and this old black man comes up the street and says, ‘Anybody want to buy a guitar?”’ Rawlings said, adding when he expressed an interest, the old man left and came back carrying a beat-up old guitar with a crack running all the way around it.“I tried it and it sounded great!” Rawlings said.Borrowing money from his friends, Rawlings bought the guitar that has been his almost constant companion ever since.Even though he became enamored of music at an early age, his higher education took a different turn. After high school, he attended McGill, receiving a B.A.in psychology and gaining acceptance into McGill’s Medical School. He turned down med school and has been making his living with music since 1968.“It just wasn’t my calling,” said Rawlings of medicine.“This (music) is my calling, so this is what I’m doing.” Rawlings inherited some of his talent and love of music from his piano teacher mother.“She just turned 81 and teaches eight or 10 hours a day, six days a week,” said a proud Rawlings.Rawlings has written for the National Film Board of Canada and has received some honors for his work, most notably a Canada Council award and awards from the U.S.National Education Film and Video Festival and the U.S.Industrial Film and Video Festival. It is his work in schools over the past few years that has led him into educational lyrics, and his interest in earth science grew out of his experiences in the natural world.A large part of this experience comes from his summers in the Townships, where Rawlings and his family live on a farm down a one-track dirt road in the woods near Stanstead.“I’ve been here every year since 1979,” he said, referring to the Heath farm, where his wife’s family lives. From the windows of their small summer home, the Rawlings family can see nothing but nature.A beaver pond in the back yard provides a quiet spot for reflection and a chance to see some wetland wildlife - plenty of inspiration for an environmental songwriter.• • • Rocks and Water, by Chris Rawlings, is available in Sherbrooke at HMV at the Carrefour de l’Estrie, at Heath Orchard new faces and bodies via surgery; extraordinarily safe sex on the Internet; and sunny dispositions made possible by drugs such as Prozac.Producer Iara Lee’s treatment of a world with widely available synthetic pleasures is witty, artsy on Discovery fake, you’ve got to wear shades and flashy. It is also noncommittal. But the mere cataloging of the surprising array of possibilities raises crucial questions about the human condition. The film gives testimony to an overwhelming desire - perhaps even a need - to live in a more predictable, safe and hassle-free world.“You’re guaranteed of having the experience you are expecting,” says one seeker of synthetic pleasures. So why vacation in an unknown place where the food might be bad and the shops could close early? As we descend from our natural-fiber clothing and whole grain high, will we crash-land in a world of polyester, plastic and processed food - and love it?It may be all we have left.Another critical issue the film examines is the preservation of the Earth’s environment and ecology. If we can digitize the natural world’s sights and sounds, will we fight less to save it?There are also the deteriorating conditions in big cities and the franchising of the roadside. One tourist in Las Vegas - a city that boasts replicas of Egyptian monuments - states the heart of the dilemma well: “It’s ever so much nicer than what you can see in the real world.” Synthetic Pleasures takes a much-needed look at a growing cultural phenomenon, alerting us to important choices. Are you ready for the future?Friday 6:00 PM CD CS Q ?fE) (52) News B Le TVA ÜSI Simpsons ED Home Improvement (33) NewshourWith Jim Lehrer E3 ITN World News m A Quincy I TV4 Performances (R) ÜÎ1J WorldView I'lkM Sea: The Last Frontier (R) (Part 1 ot 2) ÇÉ3 World News Lim New Attitude (R) HhUVI Heartbreak High (R) 023 Furniture to Go (R) 1VLT Inside Stories nm Flare TV (R) >i I'J Video & Arcade Top 10 IGUI Dukes of Hazzard 6:30 PM (T) NBC Nightly News B Scènes de rue Q g2) ABC World News Tonight (29) Roseanne ED Simpsons Si Nightly Business Report GEEI Performances (R) l'im Beyond 2000 iV.'i Business World I » la 4 Dealing With Dogs (R) lH»!
