TALK OF THE Townships page 2 November 30-December 6, 2001 RECORD: dining out Let your taste buds do the walking -fine dining is a Townships tradition A gift from the kitchen is a gift from the heart tapwu I sensations For an exceptional outing in the heart of North Hatley.Throughout the year, 7 days a week, conic and enjoy the relaving atmosphere of an English puH.* Imported and micro-brewed beers featuring the renowned Massawippi pale and red ales * Sunday Brunch from 11:00 a.m.* Full-course meals and lighter fare * Bilingual staff * Group reservations for up to 100 By Maureen Depatie Southam News Hmmmm.Hitting the malls during peak Christmas rush for frantic hours of shopping or spending the day quietly puttering in the kitchen? For most us, it’s no question that the kitchen is the place we’d prefer to be.But you may be surprised to discover that this time of year, it’s a choice you can actually be making.Sure, there is some heavy shopping to be done on most people’s lists, but there are also likely many gift needs that can be easily covered from the comfort of a kitchen.Gifts that are handmade can be of the edible, decorative, creative or crafty variety. They can be used as stocking stuffers, hostess gifts or to take care of a multitude of little gift items for people like letter carriers, newspaper delivery people, teachers and Pilsen neighbours.A handmade gift may even be the solution for a few larger gifts that you want to be especially personal.“Creating a gift from the kitchen is not necessarily less expensive than purchasing something from a store,” says Jean Pare, author of the latest cookbook in her Company’s Coming series, Gifts from the Kitchen.“But an item you took the time and effort to pull together is what will strike family and friends as thoughtful, because it is unique.” There will never be two identical tins of cookies, two birdhouses or two homemade packages of bath salts for any one person under the tree. But one size fits all for tasty, hand-dipped chocolates and nobody is likely ever going to want to exchange or trade-in their tin of tasty, caramel popcorn.Homemade gifts are also never unfashionable or unappreciated, say Pare, who’s been giving gifts of pies or càsseroles to neighbours, friends and family for decades.“When I started this book, somebody asked me if it was really still in style to make gifts for other people anymore.I thought about it a lot, but what I think it comes down to is that everybody eats and that the niceties in life, like a little thoughtfulness, are never out of style,” says Pare.R c ?i a u rani & 1’ u 1> 55 Main Street, North 1 lutley (NI1)) H42-2071 « inloto’pilscn.ea • www.pilscn.csi De Leonardo s awarded COURTESY ARQ The Restaurant owners association of Quebec recently awarded one of its three ‘Coup de chapeau’ prizes to Sherbrooke restaurateurs Giampiero and Christiane Mecatti, owners of Da Leonardo on Marquette Street. The other two recipients of a Coup de Pouce prize were Groupe Restos Plaisirs Inc.founder Jacques Gauthier of Quebec City and chef-owner ofUEtang des Moulins restaurant in Terrebonne Jean Gayer.“To prepare a gift of food, we must take time, one of our most precious commodities, away from everyday routines and obligations,” says Sally Pasley Vargas, author of Food for Friends: Homemade Gifts for Every Season (Ten Speed Press, 2000).“In giving that time, we are expressing something very personal: that we care, that our friends matter, that it is important to sustain our relationships.” And you don’t need to be a master chef or Martha Stewart to whip up wonderful gifts.“Luckily, you need no special training to create fabulous food gifts,” says Vargas, who claims there are gift ideas for all levels of cooks, from the culinary-challenged to the experienced.“Framboise, for instance, is the absolute cornerstone of my own personal cottage industry.Add raspberries to vodka and let soak for two months.Stir in sugar.Taste.Pour into a clean wine bottle and tie with a beautiful ribbon.Presto! A lovely red testament to the last days of summer. If you can read and if you can measure, you can give a friend a gift of food.” Food gifts can range from the usual preserves and baking (squares, cookies, cakes and pies) to appetizers, like a tasty brie wrapped in phyllo pastry, to a casserole, perfect for helping out a family on a busy evening. If you’re especially low on your own time, you can even assemble a gift basket using pre-made products like a bottle of wine and some gourmet cheeses and crackers.Or, assemble and wrap together all the things that would be needed for a great brunch - champagne, juice, fresh fruit, croissants and preserves or a gourmet syrup and pancake mix.But beyond food items, many other intriguing gifts can also come out of kitchens.Bubble blower kits or paint can be handmade for kids, dough art picture frames or baskets, decorative garlands, candles, sachets and tons of bath products (like soaps, bombs, milk bath and air fresheners) can all be produced at home, says Pare. There is no limit to the wonderful gifts you can come up with.Just be sure to set realistic goals for how many homemade gifts you can manage, so the making (and giving) stays fun.“It’s all in the planning,” says Vargas.“How much time you have, how many gifts you want to make will determine your choice of gift.” If you’re making a lot of holiday gifts, choose something that can be made far ahead, like a jam, or made quickly, like muffin mix, she says.“Whatever you decide, give some thought to how you will wrap your gift before you even start making it, collect the necessary materials, and set aside time for each step," says Vargas. This gift of organization you give to yourself will save on stress, and the extra effort in terms of presentation can be what makes the difference between a gift that looks last-minute or truly spectacular. TALK OF THE loWmhlpS RECORD November 30-December 6, 2001 page 3 Music, dance, theatre and more.all in the Townships stage There’s no haircut in this barbershop DAVID ANDERSON/PHOTO CORRESPONDENT ‘4 Tonight Only’, comprised of four Montreal barbershop quartet singers, are currently featured in Sunshine Theatre’s The Music Man at the Knowlton Playhouse.By Caroline Kehne Record Correspondent Knowlton Barbershoppers refer to their music as “the best kept secret in America.” How, then, did this little known Southern-U.S.musical form make its way to an Eastern Townships stage and to rave reviews in Sunshine Theatre’s current production of Meredith Willson’s classic The Music Man?The story is a typical “friend-of-a-friend" connection that started last summer, and ended with “4 Tonight Only”, a quartet of four singers from the greater Montreal area, taking to the Knowlton stage. The journey began last July as Sunshine Theatre principals Don Wilson, Sunil Mahtani, Kate Wisdom and Don Patriquin were sketching out the details for their most ambitious stage performance to date. The Music Man, Willson’s unabashedly sentimental tale of love and redemption set in turn-of-the-centu-ry small-town America, is a tribute to a time when values were firm and tastes, simple.Music plays a central role in the production, both as a plot driver (in con-man Harold Hill’s plot to fleece the citizens of River City) and as background colour for this archetypal mid-Western, middle-class community.Willson, a veteran of John Philip Sousa’s band and the New York Philharmonic as well as a member of a barbershop quartet, was as in step with popular music as any composer of his day, and at least one “Music Man” song, proved its cross-over potential when ‘Till There Was You’, recorded by the Beatles in 1963, became a hit.Sunshine’s Wilson said that efforts to recruit an experienced barbershop quartet led them to Philipsburg barbershop singer Bob Gre-vatt, who later referred music director Donald Patriquin to a barbershop group in Burlington, Vermont, and finally the Montreal-based 45-voice Island City Chorus.Four members of that chorus, Steve Wheaton, his son Andrew Wheaton, Jerry Silverberg and Mike Harkness, also perform as the quartet “4 Tonight Only” and were quickly recruited for the Knowlton production.Singer Steve Wheaton, who serves as president of the Island City Chorus and as music director of the St-Lambert based quartet, was no stranger to the Townships. From 1985 to 1981, he served as director of a barbershop group based in Stanbridge East that later moved to Cowansville (the group disbanded in the early 1990s, two years after his departure.) He is the only member of the group with stage experience, a veteran of a Lyric Theatre production of the Music Man.“It’s an experience watching my son Andrew go through what I went through mastering the part,” said Wheaton, who, in his day job, is an airline quality assurance analyst.Accepting the part also meant a substantial time commitment for the four singers/actors.Not only does the group practice weekly in Montreal, they also commuted to Knowlton for practices every weekend since September.Quartet member Jerry Silverberg said that his comrades have been impressed with the warmth they have encountered from Townships residents, both onstage and off.“I told my wife that if I were going to retire, I’d consider moving to the Townships,” said Silverberg, who, when not singing, works as a cemetery manager. For Steve Wheaton, the benefits of collaborating with Sunshine Theatre has been two-way.He and fellow quartet members want to make the music they love a little bit less of a secret, pointing Meet the ‘Authors Musicians Townshippers1 Association invites you to meet: Readers » Munira Judith Avinger Bernard Epps Louise Oliver Barbara Verity Musicians Heather Webster & a Chris Nicotera Take this opportunity to browse or buy the books and CDs/cassettes of many other Townships talents!
