Costner is making baseball movies By Louis B.Hobson Sun Media New York Growing up in Compton, a working-class community in California, Kevin Costner dreamed of becoming a baseball player. There was just one problem.Until he was in his 20s, Costner was only 5ft 2inches tall.“Every coach I had said I was too small to be a professional athlete but I never gave up hying,” recalls Costner who was named the top football, baseball and basketball star in his school. After high school, Costner earned a degree in business and worked for just under a year in a marketing job.Around the time he sprouted to 6ft 1 inches at university, Costner began acting in amateur plays. He also married his college sweetheart Cindy Silva and, with her encouragement, actively pursued a career in film. The rest is history. In the 17 years since he made his first film, Costner has become one of the most powerful and popular actors ofhis generation.Even if just vicariously, Costner has fulfilled his dream of becoming a baseball player. Not once but three times. This Friday, Costner adds Fbr Love of the Game to Bull Durham and Field of Dreams which still rank as two of his biggest screen successes.Bull Durham turned Costner into a major sex symbol while Field of Dreams imbued him with mythic quali es turning him into a icon of Americana which he cemented with his crowning achievement Dances With Wolves. In For Love of the Game, Costner plays Billy Chapel, an aging star pitcher whose professional and personal life is crumbling at the same time he is poised to pitch a perfect game.“Baseball pictures have been good to me but that’s not the main reason I wanted to do For Love of the Game.I saw it as a relationship movie. It’s as much the story of a man and a woman as it is about baseball.” Kelly Preston plays the journalist who wins Billy Chapel’s heart only to break it in an attempt to salvage her own life and career. After the greatest day ofhis professional career, Billy Chapel sits alone in his hotel room crying.“I have so much in my life but I don’t have a partner so I don’t feel my life is complete.” Costner is not talking about companionship. He hardly lacks for that Even when he was married he was a notorious womanizer and these past six years he has had an endless string of affairs. His earlier dalliances took their toll on his marriage. After 16 years and three children, Costner and Silva divorced in 1994.“I never asked or expected the press to ignore my divorce. There are some very mean people in the press who have savaged me while leaving other celebrities alone for doing exactly the same things.“I have never asked God to fight my fights.I just want him to make the playing field fair and often it hasn’t been.“There have been so many vicious things written about me and my films,” reflects Costner.“I honestly believe that history will bear me out. These are movies that will stand the test of time.My movies are like my children, I love them all equally.” That includes his most maligned child Waterworld.“Not once when certain writers are taking a strip offWaterworld do they bother to mention that it ended up grossing $500-million US worldwide. That hardly qualifies it for an epic disaster.“I’ve become something of a whipping boy for the press but none of these people ever whips me to my face and that’s what hurts the most.” To show just how much neg ative press Costner receives at the expense of the whole truth, he dtes stories about the perks he received while filming For Love of the Game.“There were all these stories that I had trainers, nutritionists and sports masseurs. It’s all true but they were all essential to get me and keep me in shape for this film.“I’m almost 45 years old.I do most of my own pitching in the movie and that took an enormous toll on my arm and my body.“I had just come out of knee surgery the week before we started filming and I had put on extra weight I owed it to the movie to get into shape.” Costner insists he couldn’t pay for these professionals out ofhis own pocket “I’d already given up my salary to get this movie made which means I was out-of-pocket quite a bit” Just weeks before For Love of the Game was scheduled to begin filming, Universal Pictures baited at the $70-million budget.“They said that baseball movies don’t perform well in foreign markets so I said I’d forfeit my ($20-million)salaiy and they agreed to let us go ahead,” explains Costner.“That was never part of the stories about my star treatment on the film.” According to director Sam Raimi and producer Armyan Bernstein Costner needed his trainers and masseur.KNOWLTON mm.JtTjl: Ville de Lac Brome See you at September 18, 1QQQ —.JOURNÉE DES m « Townshippers CBC ÿ Montreal jjf Journal RECORD «$80 5:: W«rtir schedule shooting so that Kevin never had to pitch two days in a row and the moment he was off camera he was either icing his arm of doing cooling down exercises.” Raimi notes that Costner insisted on scenes being filmed showing his character experiencing the same kind of physical pain the actor endured.“Kevin is an actor void of vanity and that’s rare in this business. He’s aging and he’s not afraid to show it.That’s a great deal ofhis appeal.” For his part Costner feels that “when you are who you are, people like you.People know that > m not nipped and tucked.” Even if For Love of the Game isn’t as huge a hit as Bull Durham and Field of Dreams, Costner won’t be disappointed.“In the game of life, sometimes you score and sometimes you strike out but none of that matters. It’s how you played the game that matters and I gave my all to For Love of the Game.” Cincm • 9 Theatres R91-QQQQ • Digital Sound 1 57575757 • Curved Screens • Free parking Internet: actionfilm.ca/cinema9 FILM John was sitting by the roadside painting a group of Mexican women doing their laundry.“I thought she was pretty attractive, but felt I had to keep my focus and so gave her directions while I continued painting,” said John, who had recently retired from a government position in Human Resources in Ottawa in order to live and study painting in San Miguel.During Ruth’s four-month sojourn in San Miguel, their love for each other blossomed gradually through frequent contact at vernissages, art shows and symposiums.“It was an emerging love of her, but yes, also the love of painting,” said John.“When you fall in love with painting, it’s a passion,” Ruth said.“I’ve had some good instruction from Californian painters and teachers, taken workshops at the Fechin Institute in Taos, New Mexico, with David Leffel and Sherrie McGraw, and also with Michael Lynch and Clyde Aspevig.” “It’s a movement in the U.S.where artists do these workshops all over the country,” added Ruth, whose paintings hang in private collections in France, Washington, California and Knowlton. The beauty of visits to Nepal and Mexico touched Ruth deeply, inspiring her to write poetry.“Painting and writing work hand-in-hand,” said Ruth, who now does morning writing sessions followed by painting in the afternoon with John and which often conclude with dancing in the evening. After four months, John decided he’d better marry this lady, “To tie her down,” rather than follow her from California (where some of her children live) to France (to visit her son and grand- child) to Nepal and Mexico. They tied the knot on New Year’s Eve 1993 in a little town on the Ottawa River named L’Orignal, near Hawkesbury, Ontario, to avoid the 12-month waiting list for a marriage in Ottawa.“We went off by ourselves to a French justice of the peace in L’Orignal casually dressed in ski sweaters, I was wearing a pair of swamp boots. One of my friends from the Treasury Board in Ottawa who stood up for me showed up in proper dress for a marriage, he’s very British, and gave me royal hell for being dressed in an Irish ski sweater,” said John, who had planned to celebrate his new wife with friends and champagne at a cottage in the Gatineau region that evening.” “Ruth said that it was a very romantic place and that she cried through the ceremony.Since both have a love of mountains and water, they decided to settle in John’s neck of the woods.” “We were debating whether to settle in Canada or the U.S.and a lot of economic factors came into play - the dollar and the Medicare system.I remembered this area as a teenager, my aunt lived in Foster and I had a cottage on Lake Selby.I used to visit the Timmins’ Farm,” added John, who persuaded Ruth to start house hunting in 1994.They say they have met many won- derful artists - Gordon Ladd, Mary Martin, Liz Davidson and John Ballantyne -who have helped them tremendously.John, who is known for his cartoon caricatures while studying at McGill and St.Francis Xavier Universities and at the Montreal Museum of Fine Art under Gerry Tondino, is finally combining his drawing and painting skills. His recent portrait of the former Prime Minister hangs in the University Gallery of Nova Scotia.“I knew that I could draw and painting is opening up a new world - a world of colour and colour harmony,” he said.Their participation in Bill Hunt’s workshop in Puntney, Vermont, has inspired both artists to work from their imagination, which has resulted in the current joint exhibition featuring Ruth’s series of sacred spaces and landscapes combined with John’s figures and vignettes of remembered places.“This vernissage celebrates our happiness and our first year anniversary of living in the Townships,” said John.“A lot of very interesting people live around here and discovering the whole area has been a joy,” Ruth added.% Ruth and John Quinlan’s paintings are currently on display at the Brome County Historical Society Museum in Knowlton. The 11 productions in the 48th season will play in repertory in the Festival’s three theatres: The Festival Theatre, the Avon Theatre and the Tom Patterson Theatre. The season will officially open on May 29 with a production of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet.Last mounted at the Stratford Festival in 1994, "Hamlet is arguably the world’s greatest play," said Monette, "and I was very fortunate to get Paul Gross (of TVs Due South) to play the title role. He’s a tremendous theatrical talent." Oscar Wilde’s satirical examination of English society, The Importance of Being Earnest takes the place of the previously announced production of The Ruling Class."I selected Earnest in honour of the 100th anniversary of Oscar Wilde’s passing in 1900," Monette said, "and we have discovered a four-act version of the play which, to our knowledge, has never before been performed professionally in North America." Elizabeth Rex, a new play commissioned by the Festival, was written by acclaimed Canadian author Timothy Findley with Paul Thompson.Set in 1601 during the Earl of Essex's trial for his unsuccessful revolt against Queen Elizabeth, the play will have its world premiere at Stratford. It depicts the Queen spending a long night before the Earl’s execution with William Shakespeare and his troupe of actors. The Three Musketeers, Alexandre Dumas’s swashbuckling tale, is also on the bill."This is our 'family experience1 costume drama," said Monette."And it continues the series of adaptations from novels we’ve done lately: Pride and Prejudice, Dracula, Little Women and The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, to mention a few. These adaptations are a way of introducing young people to the- atrical narrative that has some substance and yet is very accessible to them.” Another family show is the well-loved musical Fiddler on the Roof, with book by Joseph Stein, lyrics by Sheldon Har-nick and music by Jerry Bock."Based on stories by Sholom Aleichem, Fiddler on the Roof follows in the style of ‘book’ musicals we’ve been doing recently: Musicals based on literary sources, often with a darker undercurrent: Camelot, Man of La Mancha and West Side Story," said Monette."It’s a wonderful musical, one of the most poignant and moving ever written." As You Like It, one of Shakespeare’s best-loved romantic comedies, will be mounted at the Avon Theatre for the first time."Of all Shakespeare’s comedies," Monette said, "this is the one that most overtly depicts women as the educating, civilizing force of male emotion.Rosalind is the longest female role in the canon. She is also one of the most popular of all Shakespeare’s heroines and proof that he anticipated the feminist movement by nearly 300 years." Set in Nazi-occupied Amsterdam during the second world war, The Diary of Anne Frank re-enacts the two years Anne Frank and her family spent hiding from the Germans in a cramped attic."When I was looking at the millennium’s events, I wanted war and the Holocaust, a defining event of our century, to be represented in the playbill," said Monette."This is a great anti-war play, without dealing with direct political issues. In this new adaptation, which was a hit on Broadway, Wendy Kesselman incorporates the recently discovered unpublished portions of Anne’s diary." "The theme of war and atrocity which has been so prevalent in recent times was also why I chose Titus Andronicus, Shakespeare’s first Roman play and his first tragedy," said Monette.Titus is Rome’s most honoured general, who returns from wars against the Goths with their queen, Tamora, as prisoner. When he sacrifices her eldest son, he incurs her desperate wrath.Titus and his family suffer rape, mutilation and murder until at last Titus has his own revenge.Rounding out the bill are Molière’s famous high-spirited comedy Tartuffe, about a religious hypocrite who dupes a religious zealot and plots the downfall of his whole family: Medea, telling the tale of the legendary sorceress of Greek tragedy, a woman whose passion leads her unchecked into violence; and Collected Stories, by Donald Margulies and starring three-time Tony Award-winning actor Uta Hagen, a drama about the relationship between an accomplished writer and a gifted graduate student.Stratford Festival artistic director Richard Monette.plays reflect ‘turmoil and excitement' of 24 centuries. September 10-September 16, 1999 page 7 Townshipsw eek ¦¦ ¦¦THEmi ¦ ¦¦ — =Record= Country Awaiting Redemption is upbeat and reflective George Strait is also a fan of Jim Lauderdale Here are the albums I have picked for you this week: HAL KETCHUM: Awaiting Redemption (Curb) Here’s good news for Hal Ketchum’s fans.Awaiting Redemption has finally been released from the label’s warehouse after almost two years. It is good because it’s either a sign that country music is broadening or that nothing could keep a good artist down.Ketchum wrote this album in the midst of a divorce and recorded it in 1997: Awaiting Redemption could have been a dark album filled with despair.Instead, it is happy, reflective and especially redemptive. The key to Ketchum’s success as a songwriter is that he gets to the point and stays on target. Some of the songs included here just might be some of his strongest material to date.Even though the production is not as slick as on previous recordings, the quality of the material makes up for it.The blues-gospel title track is a gem, with the artist providing one of his most forceful vocals to date.He is very convincing through his quivering, sometimes shouted vocals.Three of the songs here were features on his 1998’ I Saw The Light album: “Love Me, Love Me Not,” “The Unforgiven” and “Long Way Down.” Some newer tracks such as the sure hit “Days of Wonder,” are very impressive. There’s also “Slow Down Sunset,” with a Johnny Cash-backbeat and from the Celtic-folk “Turn of the Wheel” to “Long Way Down,” a Chuck Berry-reminder, and the bluesy feel of the slow, “When Blue Was Just a Colour.” Awaiting Redemption was not recorded for commercial reasons but rather for personal reasons. It had to be done, it had to be said.JIM LAUDERDALE: Onward Through It All (RCA/BMG) Did you know that Jim Lauderdale happens to be George Strait’s favorite songwriter (Strait has cut 10 of his tunes)? This is quite a compliment coming from the Frank Sinatra of Country Music! Although Lauderdale may be best known as a writer, this new album, a solid set of 16 songs, dramatically displays his range and demonstrates his potent singing ability. The album offers many potential singles and there’s something for everyone.“Calico,” has a haunting chorus, while the title song is a refreshingly delicate ode to a special woman.Lauderdale sings, “Missing a lonely girl lost in a lonely world/ She is magnificent and doesn’t even know it.” He makes it sound so real that if COUNTRY you close your eyes CoNNEcTION you can see that girl.Country to the core, “Please Be San Antone” was co-written with Emily Erwin of the Dixie Chicks.Lauderdale pitched the love plea to the Chicks, but it didn’t work so he found a good place for the Jessie Aulis Chicks’ reject on this album.“We Really Shouldn’t Be Doing This” will sound familiar since George Strait took it Top 5 last year. But Lauderdale’s forceful version is very different from the light Strait treatment.Ashley Cleveland lends her voice to one of the highlights, “What I Want You To Say,” co-written with Jamie Hartford. The song’s tender lyrics and soaring production are evidence of one of Lauderdale’s most passionate performances.“The One That Didn’t Get Away” is a powerful love number, even if it was meant as a tribute to a guitar.Reminiscent of the best of Leonard Cohen, “Understanding Everything” is a slow, almost mystical poem.Lauderdale teamed with Kim Richey to co-write “It’s Just Like You.” Steel guitar being Lauderdale’s favorite instrument, there’s plenty to bring “Almost Next To Nothing” to life with a pulsating rhythm. The whole album proves that the artist has honed his craft very well. The North Carolina native has been playing gigs in New York, Los Angeles and now Nashville. The different styles blend to perfection to offer fans a beautiful and dynamic package. Both of the above albums are country music with an edge more than what people today call New Country. But they are both very distinctive.EDDY RAVEN: live at Billy Bob’s Texas (Smith Music Group) Recorded at the world’s largest honky-tonk, the album brilliantly captures Eddy Raven’s live show. He’s always been one top-notch songwriter who knows how to both write and deliver a country song. This album featuring his own hits as well as tunes he penned for others, comes as a feast.By the time it’s over, it has proved very satisfying. The Lafayette, La., native offers some Cajun-flavoured songs with “Joe Knows How To Live,” “I Got Mexico” and “Bayou Boys.” Then he switches to a more Caribbean style with “Shine, Shine, Shine,” “Operator, Operator” and “Island.” In “In a Letter To You,” “Sometimes a Lady” and I Wanna Hear It From You,” he sounds more like Elvis than a bayou boy.Raven combines “I Should’ve Called” CURB Despite a recent divorce, Hal Ketchum is remaining upbeat and staying focussed.with Who Do You Know In California” in medley form and he does a Oak Ridge Boys’ number with “Thank God for Kids.” This is an enjoyable journey through Raven’s career that has produced 18 Top 10 hits and 6 No.l’s.You’ll enjoy this live recording to the fullest. It’s always nice to hear someone with such distinctive talent.Have a great week and keep that country state of mind!
