Weekly Guide to Arts & Entertainment in the Eastern Townships INSIDE Movie Review seePage 5 \ INSIDE BU Theatre seePage 12 _______) THE RECORD, September 5 - September 11, 2008 Mike Goudreau and guests jazzed up the Haskell Opera House NANCY NOURSE Mike Goudreau takes time to chat and sign autographs after the performance.By Nancy Nourse Record Correspondent Multi-talented Mike Goudreau gathered together a group of friends and put on a tremendous show on Saturday evening at the Haskell Opera House.Goudreau makes his home in Stanstead and has earned himself a steady following throughout Ontario, Quebec and the Eastern Provinces.Whether he is playing jazz, tunes from the 50’s and 60’s, or something he has written himself, one thing you can be sure of is that you are in for an excellent evening of musical entertainment.Part of Goudreau’s trademark appeal seems to be his willingness and the pleasure he derives in highlighting the other musicians with whom he shares the stage. The theme for the Saturday show was The American Songbook which held many of the old-time favourites.Audiences were also treated to Sherbrooke’s Maurice ‘Mo’ St.Pierre's smooth sounds of the saxophone, a treat not to be missed (pictured right).INSIDE - Community Radio - Book Review - Country Connection «THF., page 2 September 5 - September 11, 2008 RECORD We Want To Thank You For Letting Us Be Ourselves! By Maurice and Tanya Singfield Record Contributor Another Labour Day Weekend has come and gone. This time, for Brome Missisquoi, a community radio station is born.Out of the cattle barns and midway of Brome Fair came the sounds of a new era, the sounds of CIDI, Radio Communautaire Missisquoi’s (RCM’s) voice of the Eastern Townships. For sure there are other voices, like community radio station CJMQ, 88.9 FM out of Lennoxville, The Record, The Outlet Journal, The Townships Sun and Townshippers Association.Together, we have no choice but to be the voice of our community.Let us not forget that together we are who we are, the people of a geographic location on the planet earth, Canada, Quebec in the Eastern Townships, and that as a people we speak different languages, have different thoughts, and must help each other through the travails of a common experience.Who are we then, friends and innovators, or sticks in the mud ahd stubborn mules?Ostriches with our heads stuck in the sand?Brome Fair is all about us and who we are, and doesn’t suffer the pains of a competitive culture. It just rolls on for a hundred and fifty two years setting an example for all of us to follow (if we wish to observe and learn), one of respect for each other and the earth, and who we are. This is CIDI.We have taken an oath, so to speak, as a result of the outpouring of support we experienced for community radio in Brome Missisquoi and Shefford counties last weekend, and promise to give back what we have received through honest effort and consideration of the people who believe in us.We have realized our responsibility to our community and are truly grateful for its support. The Brome Fair campaign has made our dream come true. We’d like to thank Richard Semmel-haack, a member of the board of directors for RCM and the main host of the Stop! TV show (an RCM production on Videotron’s cable network) for coming up with the idea of CIDI broadcasting live at the fair this year.Without his determination it wouldn’t have happened.Richard is a farmer and has exhibited his cattle and produce at the Fair over the years, knowing full well what it takes to make community spirit happen. As well we’d like to thank all of the other hosts that took part in the Brome fair weekend broadcast: Bertrand Cloutier, Robert Beaulieu, Brent Robil-lard, Stuart Gilman, his wife Marie Gilman, her sister Lucie Fortin, Julie Taylor, Annie Schneider, Gwyneth Price, ALL PHOTOS COURTESY OF CIDI CIDI hosts in action.Radio mm David McGovern, Ralf Bushenbaum, Jim Ferrier, Gary Richards, Angel Forrest and her husband Denis Coulombe. Each and every one of them did a super job! Also, we’d like to thank all of the people who stopped by our CIDI booth and agreed to an interview. Thanks to the new members who joined up.A big thank you goes out to the directors of Brome Fair who were kind enough to offer free passes to all of our guests and hosts and provided us with a booth. And most certainly, mille fois merci and muchas gracias to our sponsors who made it all possible: Royal Lepage / Lois Hardacker -Knowlton, Gereli Farm - Shefford, F.G.Edwards Inc.- West Brome, Earth Alive -Waterloo, Paddie’s Boutique - Knowlton, Tim Cat Graphics - Foster, Wright’s Store - Fulford, J.L.Flanagan General Merchants - Knowlton, Les Immeubles Colbrook - Knowlton, Brome Lake Books - Knowlton, Courville Geriatric Center -Waterloo, Rona / Lévesque - Cowansville 8; Knowlton, R.B.Financial Services-Mansonville, Iteract (internet solutions) - Knowlton, BMR (construction materials) - West Brome & Sutton, Stone Haven Inc.- Knowlton, Marina Knowlton, Pick-en’s Farm Equipment - Waterloo, Au P’tit Poulet - Waterloo, Eastern Townships Docks - Foster, Singfield Piano -Waterloo, Domain des Erables - Foster, Joie de lavande - Knowlton, Knowlton Tool Rentals, Pur Animal - Knowlton, Corbus - Cowansville and Duotel -Knowlton.All of the above sponsors are considered to be founding sponsors of CIDI because of their timely support, which helped us raise the necessary funds (aprx.$11, 000) to guarantee that RCM will be up and broadcasting this coming November first.Yes it’s true, we’ll be a community radio station serving the Eastern Townships by way of a small transmitter reaching the region of the Town of Brome Lake and a portion of Waterloo, and with the internet, we’ll be wherever people want us to be.Within a couple of years we will have our own tower on Patch Hill outside of Brome Village reaching the majority of Brome Missisquoi and parts of Shefford county being who we are.RCM would like to give special thanks to the major donors that have made this project come true over the past few weeks: The Durward Darling Estate and the Town of Brome Lake.In memory of a great local musician and community conscious individual we would like to dedicate one of our studios to the memory of Durward Darling and also recognize a community that understands the worth of community radio, the Town of Brome Lake. Both shall be honoured with brass plaques in our downtown Knowlton studios. The CIDI / Brome Fair weekend could definitely not have happened without the generosity of Acoustix Quebec, a sound reinforcement company with locations just outside ofFarnham and Granby, for having donated their transmitter and antenna specially for this occasion. Also, without the presence of Hans Rutten, volunteer manager, technician, Please see CIDI on page 3 ¦ THF.) Maurice Singfield is vice-president of RCM’s board of directors, a volunteer, CIDI's program director and Tanya Singfield is a volunteer. For more information on how you can participate in local Townships community radio please contact us by Email:info@rcmmedia.org or call us at 1-888-539-2098.WELCOME TO THE DOWNTTAIRf FROM THE MAGOG BAR EVER/ TUUDAY COME LEfTEM TO UVE COUNTRY MUFIC BAND.52785 244 Dufferin St., Sherbrooke 819-563-7949 iJiamptotv tJnnj&fSutted North Conway TAX FREE SHOPPING OUTLETS snoi»i»mts WAîVTlil)!!!
