Sise said the failure of the 75 Victoria project took its toll on the volunteers that serve on the board of directors. The immediate focus will now be on STOVES, FIREPLACES, FURNISHINGS, ETC.' 571 boul J.J.Bertrand, Cowansville Tel: 266-1441 VUfWO PC MMAfô/ weldemTheatre 104 N.Main St.St.Albans, Vt.Membre ASBO Certifié par SAÈ Complete insurance t *>* Ui 54B Principale N, Sutton Quebec m (450) 538-5858 1 (877) 538-5858, ET J j7,!l5lfeLSt,Stt:!,tlS[5q MAR.22-28 ICE AGE Ut*:St,Sum 0 wmEttiftiSHOITK 7Mt:St,$m:4 ^ TIME MACHINE I"***1 «-s Women's film Festival: AMELIE Mou Mar.25:7 djw UÜ TBLCS’s annual general meeting, on Mon day, March 28.Sise said several vacant po sitions on the board of directors must be filled.“We hope that with new people on board there might be a resurgence of en ergy," Sise said.“From there we hope the community centre project will be able tc move forward in a positive and fulfilling light.” Sise said there are other options avail able for a new location, but they haven’t been discussed in any detail yet. Also of in terest is a new government program tc provide up to 50 per cent of the cost foi new community centres in Quebec.“I’m sure it’s all for the best,” Sise said “We’ll find a community centre that will be a wonderful place.” The TBLCS annual general meeting will be held on Monday, March 25, at 7 p.m.at the Legion Community Centre, 383 Knowlton Road. The meeting is open tc the public.S'mto'ii Résidence pour les Aînés / Retirement Residence Séjour convalescence ou de longue durée soins 24 h sur 24.26 Mount Echo, Knowlton (450) 242-4663 Website: manoirtacbrome.com J A page 2 Wednesday, March 20, 2002 Brome County N Brome County Community Billboard Community Calendar March 18 to 27 Knowlton Academy READ-A-THON 2002 encouraging all students to read every day, joining in on a friendly competition to see which class will have the highest reading time and who will bring in the most pledges. All proceeds to benefit students of Knowlton Academy.Hoping you will join us in encouraging these children in their reading endeavors.March 23 MENTAL HEALTH & WELL BEING MEETING at St.Paul’s Church (basement), Knowlton, 2 p.m.Do you or someone you know suffer from some form of depression? Are words like Schizophrenia, Manic Depression, Bipolar Disorder confusing to you?Do you have difficulty knowing how to cope with these conditions or to support someone who struggles with them?Info: Call Linda, 450-243-0928.Townships Toddlers BENEFIT ROAST BEEF AND PORK B.B.Q.for Mtl.Childrens’ & B.M.P.Hospitals at Oddfellows Hall, Knowlton, 5 to 7 p.m.Dance to follow with Borderline & Silverado.Tickets: S10.Info, or reservations: 450-266-1716.Bring your favourite recipes for our fall cookbook! ; ; CAROLINE KEHNE/CORRESPONDENT The Paint Dudes: Grade 7 students Aaron Lapaine, Louis Blumenfeld and Malcolm Crossfield, were instrumental in getting the project off the ground.By Caroline Kehne Record Correspondent The atmosphere was a little brighter for students at Heroes Memorial School in Cowansville on Monday as the second floor hallway received a much-needed paint job over the weekend. The project was initiated by teacher John Palov and his class of Grade 7 students, as well as the efforts of parents, administration and a band of nine volunteers from Katimavik.“The project was designed to show students how to take responsibility and how to get things done,” said Palov.“They had to learn how to work with the organizational structure, what a governing board does and how to approach them.” Palov’s students started with a brainstorming session in which they identified key repairs necessary to maintain a healthy learning environment, including a coat of new paint for the school’s hallways, repairing a broken bathroom door and replacing the school’s broken water fountain.Grade 7 students Malcolm Crossfield, Louis Blumenfeld and Aaron Lapaine, drafted the repair plan that was approved by the school’s governing board. As a result of students’ efforts, the school received a donation of a new water fountain from a benefactor. The school’s Parents Participation Organization also agreed to help by supplying paint and materials to paint the second floor hallway. The only thing missing was volunteers to paint the walls.Principal Dawn Irving had two volunteers from Katimavik:.Canada’s national youth corps, assist with the project.A quick talk with the local Katimavik project leader resulted in.the recruitment of the entire team of nine teens working within Cowansville area to perform the weekend of painting.Katimavik, meaning “meeting place”, is a national youth corporation which fosters the personal development of Canada’s young people through a challenging program of volunteer community work.Participants spend 30 weeks in three 10-week rotations across different provinces. The Katimavik volunteers who assisted at Heroes Elementary recently arrived in Quebec for the third and final leg of their 30-week adventure after assignments in New Brunswick and British Columbia. The nine students, who came from Manitoba, Alberta and the four corners of Quebec, including Quebec City, Matane, Rouyn-Noranda, St-Angustine and St-Hu-bert, all agree to perform volunteer work for $3 per day plus room, board and transportation.“This is something I do for the experience rather than for the money,” said Manitoban and Katimavik volunteer Nathalie Lafleche.Grade 7 students Crossfield, Blumenfeld and Lapaine, who call themselves “the paint dudes”, worked on the painting crew, masking off unpainted surfaces in advance of the teen paint crew.ubmoti f ROCH VALLIÈRES Contractor LICENCE RBQ: 81O1-20I5-J2 Machinery work • Hydraulic hammer frock breaker) Private road • Land shaping • Drainage • Artificial lake/pond • Septic system • Demolition - foundation Topsoil - Aggregate • Sand • Gravel î:$Ç& • ,4 ¦ ' ' ' ' Wj/i-w'Wmw/ - w- i ^ > ' A W,?‘W Live-in camp for ages 10-17 ,jîn**wf/é\hM /tfiHîîlüïlHS!
