I still think Halloween is far more trouble than its worth, and I still think my kids could refrain from trick-or-treating and not be seriously traumatized by it.Regardless of my own feelings, I still spent two hours trick-or-treating with my kids last Friday night.1 wasn’t planning on it, but it was so nice out, I figured, ‘Why not'?When we got back home, it took me another 90 minutes to check every piece of candy they got - sometimes I even taste-tested them to make absolutely sure the candy wasn’t laced with too much sugar.(Whew! Good thing 1 ate all those mini Aero bars and not my kids, or they would’ve been the ones up till 4 a.m.working off a wicked sugar rush!).Then, midway through checking the.candy, I realized that I didn’t really want my kids eating this stuff anyway.Really, is there a toothpaste powerful enough to remove all the excess sugar that accumulates on a child’s teeth after he or she has eaten approximately two pounds of Halloween candy? Can anything remove the sticky residue of candy kisses and caramels off little teeth and hands? Is it safe to give a child Pepto-Bismol and Turns when their tiny stomachs finally rebel against having to digest the 27th roll of those criminally sweet Rockets candy?Yes, 1 still feel that Halloween is basically a non-occasion that we could all live without. So why do I feel I may have misjudged it?Well, I realized as we were trick-or-treating that there is one fringe benefit for parents. You see, Halloween gives grown-ups a chance to peek inside other people’s houses to see if the interiors are as nice as they seem from the outside.I live in the Old North, which is well-known for its beautiful houses. For 355 days a year, I take walks through this neighborhood and marvel at the size and charm of these houses. One day a year, I get to take a little peek inside under the guise of taking my kids out for Halloween treats. What a perfect cover! It’s more legitimate than pressing my nose up against the neighbors’ windows at night or going door-to-door asking to borrow a cup of sugar. My suspicions were correct - the interiors of most houses in my neighborhood are even more spectacular than I thought they would be.I’ve never seen so many hardwood floors, monster fireplaces, winding staircases and arched doorways in my life.If I had been more audacious, I’d have asked to use everyone’s bathrooms just so I could take a better look around, but I knew that would be a bit too much.Instead, I just walked my kids to the doorsteps of these houses and then craned my neck so that I could get a decent look inside the hallways and living rooms of every house, since that’s about all a person can see from a doorway. So my neighbors think I’m a little weird (what else is new?) and I’m sure that next Halloween, when they see me and my kids coming, they’ll stand on their porches and block the doorway so I can’t see what changes they’ve made in the last year.Ah, who cares?I’m just glad I found a way to finally enjoy Halloween.Linda’s Playground Linda Galeazzi mm?¦ W&Mm Gallup’s nature CATHY WATSON/CORRESPONDENT Richmond’s Myrtle Gallup displays one of the many paintings she’ll be exhibiting at L’Abbé qui rit restaurant starting this Sunday.Gallup, perhaps better known for her writing, is also a talented painter whose work focuses on nature and local scenery. She began painting in oils in 1970 while still living on her farm near Danville, but watercolor is her current medium of choice.“I’m still just learning watercolors, really.I’ve been at it five years now.Watercolors are more challenging - more fun than oils," said Gallup, who can’t quite believe how taken people are with her watercolor work.“I paint for a hobby, because I like to paint, not for commercial reasons.People think you have to stick to a formula, but I don’t -1 just paint the way I see it and it makes me happy," said the charming artist.Art lovers can see Gallup’s oils and watercolors at L’Abbé qui rit, 320 College in Richmond, from Nov.9 for two months. The vernissage takes place at 2 p.m.on Nov.9.Cathy Watson Record Correspondent TANYA TKACH/ CORRESPONDENT another By Dominic Messier Record Correspondent Sherbrooke Just when we thought we were beyond A Brave New World and 1984, the future seems like a very differ ent place. In Gattaca, an insightful new sci-fi thriller by Andrew M.Niccol, we are asked to follow Generation X star Ethan Hawke on a trek into the ambitious world of space exploration. What is most interesting about this thrilling venture is the setting: a time in the “not-too-distant future”, where success and life expectancy are determined within seconds of your birth. Those deemed genetically invalid (anyone with a physical or mental ailment) are condemned to live a boring and uneventful existence, while the elite (or the Valids) are destined for greatness, according to their DNA.Hawke plays Vincent Freeman, a hopeful and ambitious young mind who hopes to leave Earth and see the stars up close. However, Vincent has 99.1% chances of developing a serious and fatal heart problem (according to his DNA), which makes him bound to perform janitorial duties, as opposed to elitist functions such as space exploration.Vincent soon trades his mop for a helpful hand from a “Valid” named Jerome Morrow, a cocky, yet brilliant young British man who possesses the genes Vincent lacks.Alas, poor Jerome severed his spine during a debilitating car crash, and so his perfection goes to waste.Until he decides to supply Vincent with the bits of hair, stool and blood samples which will make Vincent assume the identity of the new Jerome Morrow. What ensues is a thrilling venture into Gattaca, a breeding ground for future astronauts.Vincent/Jerome must try to fool everyone around him, and eventually make it into space. This also poses a problem, as the space program director meets an untimely death.Soon, Gattaca, which takes its name from nucleotides on a DNA strand, turns into a veritable magnifying lens, where even a fingernail or eyelash can be incriminating.I found the surrealistic setting of Gattaca fascinating. This is a neo-utopic society where a blood sample is required at the door and stool samples are requested at random.Ethan Hawke approaches the character of Vincent with apprehension, yet succeeds in presenting the audience with a fun display of paranoia because his true identitiy might be discovered at any time. This role is no different from his past performances, such as the one he delivered in Dead Poets Society seven years ago.The supporting cast is what makes the film enjoyable.Jude Law, a brilliant British actor is a powerful presence in this movie, playing the real Jerome with a certain flair.Through this great actor, we can sense the bitterness which would result from a life of hopes and dreams being shattered.Uma Thurman, in her role as Hawke’s female lead, Irene Cassini, is barely passable. Her character remains a constant irritation on screen, COLUMBIA PICTURES Ethan Hawke's genetic imperfections cause him to wallow at the bottom of the job market, until he steals the identity of another.Everything is going well, until untimely death intrudes.as we are more interested in the Vincent/Jerome relationship than anything she has to say.Screen veteran Alan Arkin shines as an investigator who thinks very little of protocol.Last but not least is Loren Dean, whose only other notable screen appearance was the title role in Billy Bathgate, opposite Dustin Hoffman.Unfortunately for Dean, his choice of roles leaves him far behind, in the long trail of forgettable young actors struggling to succeed in Hollywood. What does this movie teach us?That no one is perfect.Even if the odds are against you, it doesn't hurt to try.• • • Gattaca is playing in English at Cinema 9 in Rock Forest.Cintrn 9 ck Forest • 9 Theatres • Digital Sound • Curved Screens • Free Record Correspondent Lennoxville Mention the words “woodwind quintet” and most people wouldn’t know what you were talking about, says a member of a the newly-formed Estria Woodwind Quintet.Horn player Randy Jackson says his group hopes to change that perception.“All (people) know what the score for a Canadiens game is,” he said.“But most people don’t know what a woodwind quintet is.” The quintet, one of three woodwind ensembles in Quebec, is made up of Townships musicians who have been playing together since 1991.Flute player Anik Lessard said the idea behind the group is to provide an alternative to symphony or chamber orchestras. She said there aren’t many small musical ensembles in the Townships, adding most groups have between 20 and 50 members.“One advantage is that you can play in smaller halls, churches - places you RETIREMENT doctor JEAN RÉAL BRUNETTE At 67 and after 40 years of medical practice, I have decided to retire.I must say that I have somewhat been ushered in that direction by the system.Anyways, it is with a shade of nostalgia that I will stop seeing my patients, many of which have become friends.I indulge in believing I have been of service. In practice, for your followup, since no ophthalmologist accepts to take over my practice, I recommend that you should see your doctor or your optometrist to be reoriented. All my charts will be kept confidential and handled by an office maintained to that effect. They will be available for a handling fee of $20.00 on written request to the following address: Archives médicales (Dr Brunette) CP 515, Magog Qc.J1X knowledge and conscience.Very sincerely yours, Dr.Jean Réal Brunette wouldn’t be able to fit orchestras.” Group members say a quintet is probably less demanding on listeners. The five musicians, who met through the Musica Nova ensemble which they still play in, formed the new group in an effort to bring new woodwind pieces to the Townships and encourage new composers in the region.Lessard is originally from Bishopton and holds a PhD degree in performance from the University of Montreal. She’s also a member of the Sherbrooke Symphony Orchestra and the Orchestre à chambre. She is also engaged to Estria’s French horn player Randy Jackson.Jackson currently holds the position of Musical Director at Bishop’s College School in Lennoxville.Etienne de Médicis has earned a first prize for his mastery of the oboe from the Montreal Conservatory.Pauline Farrugia, married to de Médicis, has studied under University of Toronto’s Ezra Schabas, and was the soloist and first clarinet of the Cathedral Bluffs Symphony Orchestra.A relatively new member to the group is Karine Breton, who is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in music performance at Montreal’s McGill University. The bassoon player has recently participated in the National Youth Orchestra’s Canadian tour. The group aims to offer an alternative musical format and genre to the region. This type of quintet is common throughout Europe but virtually unheard of in this area.A quintet is somewhat less demanding on the listener and easier to watch HERBALIFE DISTRIBUTEUR INDÉPENDANT Steve Page & (Denise Gloutier AFRA SASKIA TUCKER/CORRESPONDENT Estria Woodwind Ensemble members Randy Jackson, Karine Breton and Etienne de Médicis (back row), with Anik Lessard and Pauline Faruggia.than a symphony orchestra, say its members.Musicians rarely get the chance to show off in the midst of orchestral performance, but there are plenty of times in a quintet’s performance to shine or simply be heard within the harmony of instruments.Playing in the quintet does not occupy the musicians’ lives full-time and their goal of playing a full season means only three concerts.Last Friday, they performed at Bishop’s Bandeen Hall with soprano Eleanor Gang. They will perform again at Bandeen Hall on Nov.7 as part of the Musique Chez Nous program and March 14 with Musica Nova.Included in their repertoire is music by Hungarian composer Faren Farkas and Czech composer Anton Reicha.Their most popular selection is Carl Nielsen’s solo quintet composition, “Opus.43 for woodwind quintet”, which is a challenging classic for all their instruments. It was written to represent the characteristics of the original woodwind quintet which performed it: The horn is loud, the clarinet frenzied and the others equally blessed with characters of their own.Nielson has even written in a note for the bassoon part which extends beyond the capability of the instrument, so the player is required to use some other material with which the instrument can be extended (Breton chooses a rolled paper). The musicians’ ambitions will hopefully take them on a European tour, with plans to play in England and the small Island of Malta, where they will work with Maltese composer Charles Camilleri, who trained in Canada and worked as both a CBC producer and conductor. They will also play in the Maltese community of Toronto.Estria Woodwind Ensemble play at Bishop’s University's Bandeen Hall on Friday, Nov.7.For tickets, call (819) 822-9692. ¦ : ¦ Uÿ * "*1 f-T»i Discovery.ca ÇE3 International Hour Itm Craftscapes (R) M !
