Patrice Beaudette is the driving force behind Christine Sixteen.He started collecting all of the KISS tributes he could find two years ago, and that gave him the idea to produce one himself.“Obviously, I’m a longtime KISS fan.I now have 75 to 80 KISS tribute CDs,”said Beaudette, who is the librarian at Coati-cook’s École Secondaire La Frontalière.“The main goal of this project was to have fun, but also for the students to find out what it would be like to go to a real recording studio, to be interviewed by the media, the PR, the whole package.The real thing bands go through.” The audition process took place at the school.Beaudette kept six of the most outstanding singers ranging in age from 13-17 years old: Dominic St-Laurent, Cassandra Goudreau, Groleau, Jessica Scalabrini, Josianne Veilleux, and Nicolas Maurais.They are joined by bassist David Bérubé, guitarist Pascal Madore and Francis Riendeau on drums.“It was easier for us girls to learn the songs because our voices are more in the register of the singers of KISS,” said Groleau.“ But it has all come together very well.” “I didn’t know anything about KISS before because they’re not from my generation, but when I heard the songs I was really surprised at how great they sound," said Goudreau.“I’m now a KISS fan and I'm really proud to be a part of this group.It’s been a great experience.” But don’t mistake any of the female singers for the girls wearing heavy-make-up on the CD cover: they're mod- els.“I picked four students of different ages whose faces resembled the original KISS members.I hired a professional make-up artist (who happens to be a former student of the school) to ‘KISS’ the girls.The process took eight hours,” said Beaudette.Christine Sixteen launched its CD in April, and 500 copies were snatched up in less than a week around the world.“People from 20 countries including Holland, Germany, Finland, and Australia bought the CD," said Beaudette.“We’re not planning on selling more though because it’s a long process with royalties involved and what not.Our goal was to have fun and for the kids to learn something.” While Christine Sixteen is the name of the group, the KISS song is not See Sixteen, pace 4 Busta Rhymes • Oscar Dhu Centre • David Martel • Dean Koontz i THU, pack 2 June 16 - June'22.2006 RECORD " TALK Cook to impress with the perfect potato salad This is a big week for me.Normally a home cook who loves to feed friends and throw casual dinners.I ain now preparing to try my hand at some professional cooking.I am introducing a menu of fun and simple dishes to be served at my in-laws' inn, Hovey Manor (at the pub, not in the formal dining room).Unfussy stuff, that you can eat sitting on the porch, while sipping a beer.And starting today, for a few days I’m going to be cooking it all myself! So I've been testing away, here in my home kitchen, so 1 get the recipes just right.One of the dishes I’ve put on the menu is a lovely cold fillet of lamb, very delicate and tender, which will be paired with a salad of potatoes, mint and peas (a classic combination).Potato salad might sound like a foolproof thing to make, but it isn't.I've eaten some that were a big white mess of mayo and half-mashed potatoes, and others that were either cloyingly sweet or had a bitter aftertaste from too much onion.Yuck! So here's my own version of the perfect summer potato salad.What makes it special is the careful choice of a good olive oil and a good salt, and also the nice contrast between the soft potatoes and the plump little peas that explode Alex’s Pantry in the mouth.As for the shallot, that small and mild French onion, it can be quite tricky to find in supermarkets.A regular red onion will do, as long as it is very finely chopped.You can tone down its kick by letting it sit in the vinaigrette for ten minutes before adding the other stuff.Potato salad with mint and peas Ingredients (for 8 as a side dish): 1.5 kg boiling potatoes 3 cups frozen peas, thawed 1 cup loosely packed mint leaves (plucked off the stems) _ cup red wine vinegar 2/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1 tbsp.Sel de Guérande or other high-end salt freshly-ground black pepper 2 tbsp.finely chopped shallot Directions: Peel the potatoes and dice them into inch-wide cubes.Place them in a large pot, cover with cold water, add salt and cook for 25 minutes on high heat.In the meantime, peel a small French shallot and finely dice it.Place 2 tablespoons of it in a bowl, add the oil, vinegar, salt and pepper and whisk.Wash the mint leaves, pat dry with a paper towel and chop coarsely.Food ALEX FORBES Peas, a carefully chosen olive oil and a good salt add a bit of sophistication to an otherwise common sidedish.Remove potatoes from heat, drain cool to the touch, toss them in a large and run some cold water on them to bowl with the peas, the mint and the stop the cooking process.Once they are vinaigrette.How to be a real pop star Make your own popcorn -it’s better for you (cheaper, too!) By Eric Akis My teenaged son turned to me the other night and said: “Dad, you’re a popcorn fiend!" He's right, if the game's on or If I'm tuning into a Law and Order rerun 1 need to have a bowl of the puffed corn to nervously nibble on while wondering if my team is going to win or if the detectives will solve the case.My craving for popcorn, although predictable, is spontaneous.Meaning that, on a commercial break I’ll say, “ I feel like some popcorn," and quickly jump up and make some.To do that lickity split, 1.like millions of others, make microwave popcorn.However, over the last while my taste for this snack has been spoiled because it seems that merchandisers are trying to attract my attention toward flavoured varieties of microwave popcorn.Plain, microwave popcorn, called “natural” by one company, can be a frustrating challenge to find in some stores.Popcorn is a healthy snack and I don’t want to mess that up by consuming a product that's been topped up with overly processed ingredients.1 became more convinced of that when opening up a package of butter-flavoured microwave popcorn, unpopped.The kernels were coated in a neon-yellow, shortening-like substance that didn’t look like butter, unless, of course, the cow had been eating yellow food colouring before milking.Curious, 1 slowly melted and drained away the substance coating the unpopped kernels (which did actually contain some butter, but it was the last ingredient listed after popping corn, hydrogenated soy bean oil, salt, flavour, artificial flavour and colour).I wanted to see how many kernels were contained inside the 99 gram bag that cost $1.10 (when buying a three-bag box).There was a 1/3 cup and 1 ended up with about two tablespoons of melted fat/other ingredients.These findings in turn made me wonder what it would it cost to not be so lazy and make my own popcorn.A 907-gram bag of popcorn kernels cost me $2.99.That bag contained four cups; therefore a 1/3 cup cost 25 cents.The two tablespoons of vegetable oil I used to pop it and the salt I added for flavour cost about 10 cents.My saving was 75 cents, which could be lesser or greater depending on the cost of the popcorn kernels and microwave popcorn you’re comparing it with.Beyond the monetary gain, another bonus with making my own popcorn was that 1 was able to use vegetable oil that was very low in saturated fat and the dreaded trans fat found hydrogenated oils.It also only took a few minutes to make.This step-by-step method below will get you popping in no time.Homemade Popcorn Set a wide, heavy-bottomed pot with a vented lid over medium heat.A vented lid will allow steam to escape and prevent that steam from getting trapped on the lid and falling back on to the popcorn, making it soggy.If you don’t have a vented lid, set a regular lid very slightly off centre so the steam can escape, but not the popcorn.In either case, be mindful of the escaping steam, it can burn your skin.Use a 3-part popcorn, 1-part oil ratio.For example, 1 heated 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil to pop a 1/3 Cup (about 6 tablespoons) of kernels.When popping greater volumes, remember that the kernels should be in a single layer in the bottom of the pot or they won’t pop properly.The oil should be hot, but not smoking hot or it will burn the popcorn.To test if the oil is hot enough, add a couple of corn kernels.When they pop the oil is ready and you can add the rest of the kernels and put on the lid.Gently shake the pot until the popping begins to slow, and then remove from the heat and let the residual heat from the pot pop the last few kernels.Transfer the popcorn to a bowl and season with salt, if desired.If you do like butter, drizzle a little warm, melted butter over top and serve.-CanWest News Service iTHIw RECORD June 16 - June 22.2006 page 3 TALK ——=- Braie First Nations Day celebration will highlight Abenaki culture Culture By Thomas Ledwell Record Correspondent Sherbrooke Ancient native traditions and music will come to life in Gould this weekend.The Oscar Dhu cultural centre, which opened its doors to the public last month, has a particular focus on the area’s Scottish roots.This is the centre’s first foray into other corners of the region’s - - cultural history.“I think it’s important not only to celebrate the Scottish side, but the other sides,” said Yves Migneron, spokesperson for the cultural centre, who himself has Scottish roots.When the Scots arrived in the region, it was home to the Abenaki people.Two members of the native community - Yvon Mercier and Christian Nolet - will share their knowledge of traditional customs and music.“A lot of Francophones have Abenaki blood.If you talk to Yvon Mercier and Christian Nolet, they have French Québécois names but they’re Abenaki.” Lingwick township has been a cultural intersection since Europeans ar- ————— rived.Mercier, who will be offering a lecture and workshops about Abenaki culture, says there was a strong relationship between the cultures.“I like to talk about the help that was given to the Scottish settlers in Gould and around the area.They were very helpful and welcoming.There was a brotherhood between the two nations.It was very beautiful,” said Mercier, noting the Scots arrived with little more than the clothes on their back and may not have survived the harsh winters without the Abenaki.Mercier embodies the contemporary relationship between different cultural groups.‘IVs my duty to teach the tradition and the culture .to make sure that it’s not lost forever, ’ says Mercier “My French name is Yvon Mercier.It was given by a priest years and years ago.My real name is Manitouabeitch.It means guardian of the spirit or medicine man,” he said.Mercier is a modern day guardian of the Abenaki culture.This weekend, on First Nations Day, he will demonstrate how to build a wigwam, how to smoke fish and beaver, and will discuss native medicines.There will also be examples of native dancing and storytelling.He will also be performing Abenaki music, which dates from the days well before Scottish and other settlers arrived in the region.“My music is not with a guitar, it’s with a drum with moose skin.I’m going to beat it like they used to do it twenty thousand years ago.1 have old, old songs.People are very surprised, but I learned it from the elders.It’s very interesting, and very traditional.” There are few native peoples in the region today.Mercier said, and there are not a lot of people who are keeping up the ancient traditions.He has taken on the - H- task of teaching those traditions, in order to keep them alive.“It’s my duty to teach the tradition and the culture to people to make sure that it’s not lost forever." In spite of the challenge, Mercier said people in the region are interested in native culture and want to know more about the region’s rich cultural background.“It’s a big challenge, but people are very open to that.They are seeking it now.They invite me everywhere to talk about it.People want to know.” At the Oscar Dhu cultural centre.Migneron is among those who want to explore the region’s diverse cultural background.He thinks others in the COURTESY OE YVON MERCIER Mercier will demonstrate how to build a wig warn on Pint Nations Day, at the Oscar Dhu cultural centre.area will as well.“1 think it’s important to get people in the area to get in touch with their own culture and the things that have been forgotten.for a long time," said Migneron.First Nations Day will take place at the Oscar Dhu Culture Centre in Gould on Saturday.June 17.The day of events begins with a lecture at 12 p.m.AND WILL CAP OFF WI TH A CONCERT OF ABENAKI MUSIC AT 8 p.m.For DETAILS.CONTACT 1-888-305-3526 OR 819-877-3446.Local artist Julia Rohan adds ceramics to her repertoire Busy local painter, writer, singer, guitarist and cellist Julia Rohan has recently added ceramics to her list of artistic endeavours.This Tour des Arts artist, who is taking a break from the studio tour circuit this year, began taking courses in wheel-thrown pottery at the Visual Arts Centre in Montreal last fall under the tutelage of Quebec ceramist Renée Gagnon.Previously best known for her acrylic paintings on wooden objects, Rohan has decided to shift her focus to paintings on canvas and functional pottery in- stead.The new paintings to be exhibited during her Sutton show are almost uniquely land and ‘skyscapes’ inspired by the many different moods of the skies seen over the Knowlton-Sutton area.Works on sale will range from large canvases to small framed drawings.Along with her new paintings, she will be offering several pieces of highly decorated wheel-thrown stoneware mugs, cups, and bowls, all of which reflect her love of colour and design.The show will kick off with a vernissage on Canada Day, Saturday July 1, from 2 to 4 p.m.The artist will be on hand to answer questions and refreshments will be served.you thought oj a gift to cbarrhj Un héritage a partager LEAVE A LEGACY*" Come celebrate.Canada Day in Hatley ! ¦ .¦SATURDAY.-I w |.IULY r\ 2006|w| Rain or shine! 2006 Theme, the 4 Seasons in (Canada Schedule: I L00 1 oo 2 00 4 00 Dusk Pu rude Sword Dance Irish Dancing kids Clumcs Musical Program fireworks Fhi.f.At mint* FOR ALL AGES! RECORD - TALK Johnny Reid returns to The Piggery June 16 - June 22.2006 page 5 Music By Nancy Nourse Record Correspondent It appears as if Johnny Reid has decided to make the Eastern Townships once of his annual stops during his Canadian tours.His fans and the management of The Piggery couldn’t be happier with this decision.Johnny Reid will be gracing the stage in North Hatley on Thursday and Friday nights, June 15 and 16, bringing with him both old and new material.Canadian audiences have greeted Reid with open arms as demonstrated by the standing ovations he recieved at numerous country festivals, on tour with Carolyn Dawn Johnson and, most recently, as opening act for Terri Clark and Brad Paisley.Reid is one performer that is never stricken with stage fright, and has been performing since the age of seven.When performing, he says he feels like just one of the gang.Reid’s music is not easy to pigeonhole.His deep, raspy soulfulness, combined with an equally deep Scottish accent, provides a fitting background for the lyrics and melodies he composes from the heart.He was nominated for 2005’s CCMA Rising Star of the Year and received the 2005 CCMA Award for Independent Song of the Year (You Still Own Me), both of which affirm that he is definitely a young artist on the move, and a very talented songwriter as well.His latest single, “Time Flies,” has soared its was to #5 on the CMT Chevy Top 20.“1 don’t really view myself as a coutry singer.I’m a blue-eyed soul singer, and it just so happens that the lyrical content of my songs fit the country Markey.Lyrics are what made me fall in love with country in the first place," commented Reid, whose voice has been compared to that of Rod Stewart and John Mellencamp.Reid was introduced to various genres of music at an early age.Growing up in a tough part of Glasgow, he was exposed to country music through his father, while his mother loved American soul.Reid began singing in local pubs at an early age and by the age of 14, he had begun to write his own songs.Reid came to love the Eastern Town- ships when he was attending Bishop’s University in Lennoxville.Not only did he love the area, but he also met the love of his life while at Bishop’s.He began playing in local venues and soon had a large following.When Reid found out that he would be performing at The Piggery last year, the first thing he wanted to do was introduce the members of his band to some of the local sites and tastes, like poutine, a dish never heard of in Nashville.The Friday evening performance will be dedicated to Jamie Coles, another Bishop’s student and Lennoxville native, who lost her life in a tragic accident earlier this year.This sentimental gesture is typical of the Johnny Reid that the people of the Eastern Townships have come to know and love.The Piggery performances begin at 8 p.m.For ticket reservations, please contact (819)842-2431.COURTESY OF JOHNNY REID Reid returns to The Piggery to perform new material ami old favourites, June 15 and 16.Stanstead action 2006 JUNE 16-17-18th Park Street in Stanstead Join us at the 7th edition of Border Fest! Oscar-winning director of Crash, Paul Haggis.liy Stephen Hunt Banfi , Al t a.The question around the halls at Banff this week — where some of the top (television) criminal minds are talking shop is not “Does crime pay’?” but."Will it still be paying by the time 1 get my crime show into production?” At a seminar, crime-show writers such as Michael Kewley of Law and Order; Chris Haddock, the creator and executive producer of Da Vinci's Inquest; FOX senior vice-president Jeffrey Glaser, who oversaw development of Bones and 24; and Richard Lewis, a writer and director of CSI; don't really have to say anything.No one needs to hear bons mots from a guy who writes a hit crime show, because the proof lies in t he numbers.• 15 of the top 30 shows on U.S.television are crime dramas.• Law and Order is returning for a 17th season.It is the longest-running drama on television.• Law and Order dominates when it comes to exporting television shows around the world.• Monk, Closer and The Shield are the top-rated shows on cable television.• Da Vinci’s Inquest has won the Genie for best Canadian drama four years in a row.• In the May sweeps.FOX shot up to the No.1 rated network, thanks in large part to airing new episodes of serial drama 24.• Serialized crime dramas such as 24, Prison Break and The Sopranos are among the best-selling DVDs.• The USA Network just ordered four original series.All of them are crime shows.What's remarkable about the ongoing success of the crime show is that it comes in so many dif ferent flavours.There's the narrative driven (Law and Order), the procedural, led by the CSI shows, the serials (24, Prison Break), which break down time, and follow their own strict narrative logic, and finally, the character-driven show, such as Monk or Da Vinci's Inquest, where it’s all about the people involved, rather than the crime-fighting process.The character-driven show is dead, you say?Consider that the next great character-driven crime drama may be The Black Donnellys, created by the Oscar-winning director of Crash, Paul Haggis.Haggis is at Banff, telling the best Hollywood stories around.After a cigarette break, he responds to a question about whether TV lets you delve more deeply into your characters than film.“Sure,” he says.“You get to mess with your characters, which I love to do.1 love twisting and turning my characters, just like in Crash and HZ Streets.You certainly have more time to explore it (character), but at the same time, there are shows that don't do character at all, and they’re incredibly successful and very good.Shows like Law and Order.” Why doesn’t Haggis write one of those?"I don’t know how to write that,” he says.“I like to watch it.I love them.” The Black Donnellys, Haggis describes as being set in a "fictional West Side (of Manhattan) neighbourhood.It’s a group of young Black Irish toughs H car thieves, a drug addict — those are my protagonists — and a murderer.And people seem to like it.” The crime drama has found a way to expand its universe inside the prison walls, on Paul Scheuring’s Prison Break.Scheuring has expanded the genre by humanizing his criminals, which is a big step up for criminals on television.The result is to transform the black and white of the crime show into something a little more grey.“I think the audience is becoming more savvy,” Scheuring said.“We’re building up decades and decades and decades worth of television — people want more complexity in television shows.” CSI’s Lewis, from Toronto, started out as an aspiring pro tennis player on the Huropean satellite circuit before breaking into TV working on CBC’s North of 60.He reflects on what attracts viewers to crime shows, even ones such as CSI which rely more on solving a puzzle than revealing character.“We (the viewer) like to fill in the gaps for the characters,” he says.“We are storytellers unto ourselves.we need to tell stories, and we fill in the gap.“There are character aspects (on CSI).They’re so quirky and interesting, and why?Because they’re doing a quirky and interesting thing — but mostly, the shows are about the mystery.Solving mysteries.” On the other hand, there is safety and comfort in watching attractive actors deal with the messy uncertainty of life.“We want to see these things, but we don’t want to deal with them personally,” Lewis says.“Death is a lot more palatable if it’s sexy.” Chris Haddock had huge success with Da Vinci’s Inquest, a talky, character-driven crime drama that features characters brimming with personal quirks.Haddock, who looks like a Salt Spring Island pot dealer from 1969, still believes in the universal power of telling and listening to stories.“Anecdotes make the best dramas,” he says.“People want their stories every day.TV has supplanted pub gossip.It’s how we talk to each other now.” Or, to put it plainly, as Michael Kewley of Law and Order says, “Crime dramas deal with basic human nature.The action-suspense-mystery narrative contain all the basic storytelling elements.And the motives deal with things like revenge and passion.Something everyone can relate to.” Still, the question lingers.Why crime, almost all the time?“Crime programming can scare you, and give you the comfort of resolution, all within a week,” Haddock adds.“Law and Order will talk about what’s going on in society via a TV show.You sit home watching Law and Order, knowing 30 million others are, too.” —Can West News Service Diabetes ^ ;«« EPIDEMIC m Diabetes W Québec Information and donations: (514) 259.3422 or 1.800.361.3504 on world facts, science, identifying leaves and animals in nature, among other useful information to amaze the small fry.A section for entertaining the kindergarten and younger set is especially helpful.A handy index at the back helps clueless dads find a trick or puzzle in a hurry.What doesn’t work: This is not a book for the serious-minded, so if you’re at all hung up on looking like a goofball in front of the wee ones, take a pass.That said, couldn’t we all be a bit more silly now and again?Overall rating: four out of five See Dad Cook: The Only Book a Guy Needs to Feed his Family and Friends (and Himself) by Wayne Harley Brach-man, Clarkson/Potter Publishing, 2006, 223 pages.$22.95 Perfect for: Hie progressive dad, who doesn’t believe the kitchen is a woman’s domain.What’s inside: This is a dad’s guide to cooking for men not comfortable or confident in the kitchen.The book is full of simple recipes and kitchen tips for the novice cook.How it works: The kids are hungry.Pick a recipe.Start cooking.Serve the meal.If all goes according to plan, watch them gobble it up and ask for seconds.Be a hero with your spouse.What works: The recipes are easy-peasy, not too out there and sure to hit the mark with even the fussiest pint-sized eaters.Brachman.a chef and father of two girls, doesn’t resort to cheese slices, hot dogs and Kraft Dinner in his repertoire.Instead, fresh and slightly more sophisticated ingredients make their way into the menu in such favourites as chicken quesadillas, tuna salad, meat loaf and Sloppy Jose’s soft tacos, to name but a few.What doesn't work: What's a cookbook without some beautiful photos of the food?Dads, just like every other cook, want to see if what they've made looks anything like it should.Overall rating: For dead-simple practicality, this book rates 4 1/2 out of five —CanWest News Service SEE DAD CQSpK ikL The Only Book a Guy Needs to Feed Family and Friends food WAYNE HARLEY BRACHMAN Koontz delivers stunningly disturbing thriller By Mike Gillespie As bestselling author Dean Koontz observes, a man begins dying at the moment of his birth.Most people live in denial of death’s patient courtship until, usually late in life and deep in sickness, they become aware of him — sitting bedside.The inevitability of death had never really struck Mitch Rafferty, the 27-year-old star of the California author’s latest thriller until, suddenly, three weeks short of his 28th birthday, his cellphone rings.It’s Rafferty’s young wife, Holly.She brings bad news to the landscape gardener as he sits in the flower beds of a stately southern California home.In The Husband (Bantam; $36), as he connects with Holly, she screams, setting the stage for a hair-raising ride from master storyteller Koontz.It’s a trip into the minds of an honour roll of sick characters involved both in the kid- napping and attempted rescue of Holly.Koontz’s success as a novelist (17 million copies of his books are sold worldwide each year) can be attributed to the “grotesque psychological world” he invites readers into, one New Orleans newspaper surmised last year, while Rolling Stone simply attributes it to the fact he’s America’s most popular suspense novelist.Suffice it to say, he knows where he's coming from when exploring cranial expanses to deliver stunningly disturbing novels.Koontz sets up his story as if just another kidnapping case.There’s the usual unattainable ransom ($2 million), the usual phone calls (“We have your wife”), the usual threats (“call police and we start cutting her into piecqs”), and the usual deadlines (60 hours).But at this point the standards go awry.Mitch is given examples of the kidnappers’ resolve: a dog-walker across the street is delivered to the sidewalk with a shot to the head; his home is rigged to look as if he, in fact, killed his wife; his every move, no matter where he goes, is monitored.It’s only when Koontz begins dropping clues about Mitch Rafferty’s past — the hideous upbringing he and his siblings endured at the hands of psychologically depraved parents — that a sense of where the author is taking you materializes.And it isn’t a pretty place.Don’t for a second be taken in by his Bishop’s University Marjorie Donald Bldg 819-822-9600 x224l The public is always welcome! One-X is bound to be a favourite with those who didn't think 'Just Like You’ was grossly overplayed on rock stations country-wide.Raw, loud, and raucous, One-X is a solid album despite not really going anywhere different from the band's first.-S.H.Emma Cook Manifesto f in mazing Records Manifesto is Torontonian Hmma Cook’s debut album, and not only did she write all 14 tracks, but she also co-produced the album and released it under her own label, Emmazing Records.Her tyyyyjty: business savvy and talent combined (she received formal vocal training at a young age), makes it likely that Cook will become a prominent figure in the Canadian folk-rock scene.That being said, she still has a ways to go.One has the sense that Cook hasn’t yet found an original voice, unique to her, and Manifesto is altogether too bland an offering.-S.H.BUSTA RHYMES The Big Bang Aftermath A move from J Records to Dr.Dre's Aftermath imprint should have meant big things for rap veteran Busta Rhymes in 2006:a higher profile, more street cred, a better posse to run with.But after the cumbersome first effort in the deal.The Big Bang, it’s clear even the good doctor makes mistakes on occasion.The Big Bang is expectation unfulfilled.Dr.Dre handles only four of the 15 tracks on the album.Dre did so at his own peril; by leaving the rest up to other producers many tracks fail to measure up, despite appearances from great rappers and singers such as Stevie Wonder, QTip and Nas.-C.N.DVD of the week By Sarah Howard DVD REVIEW In Shopgirl.Ray Porter (Steve Martin) is a millionaire who knows exact ly what he wants, and that includes Mirabelle Buttersfield (Claire Danes), a young woman working at the glove counter in Saks Fifth Avenue.Won over by what she considers romantic gestures, Mirabelle agrees to a relationship with the much older Ray.but one that is — unknown to her - based upon an unspoken mutual agreement.Also featuring Jason Schwartzman as Jeremy.Mirabelle's much younger — and much more clueless — suitor.Shopgirl is adapted from Martin's novella of the same name.The film has been marketed as a romantic-comedy.but Shopgirl is simply more understated delicateness than cheap Rags STEVE MARTIN CLAIRE DANES shopgirl shopgirl SONIC YOUTH Rather Ripped Geffen It has been a while since Sonic Youth has created a masterpiece truly worth of such a title, but the New York band comes pretty close with Rather Ripped.Forget the eight-minute jams of recent Sonic Youth records, or the studio tinkering of unofficial fifth member Jim O’Rourke; Sonic Youth’s first effort in six years without O’Rourke is quintessential guitar-rock from the band most often associated with the genre.For many fans, the highlight will be the re-emergence of bassist Kim Gordon, who hasn’t sounded this tuneful — or interesting - in years.She steals hearts on five of the dozen tracks, giving Rather Ripped a charming alter ego to the atonal vocals of her husband, singer-guitarist Thurston Moore.Sonic Youth is less about vocals than guitars, mind you, and when Sonic Youth’s newest drone-rock masterpiece cranks up the amplifiers, the result is a thing of raw.reverberating beauty.-C.N.MATTHEW SWEET Girlfriend: Legacy Edition Volcano/Legacy Girlfriend doesn’t sound any fresher in 2006 than it did in 1991, the year of its original release.That’s not a bad thing.Matthew Sweet's star-making third album was always considered ahead of its time, and the rest of the music world is finally catching up to this power-pop gem.The revised Girlfriend does benefit from the Legacy label’s treatment, which offers two full discs of material, including bonus tracks, home demos and rare live performances, tops among them a cover of Neil Young’s ‘Cortez Killer’ that features Amy Ray of the Indigo Girls.‘Girlfriend’ — with stellar work by guitarists Robert Quine (Richard Hell & the Voidoids) and Richard Lloyd (Television), who add just tlfe right amount of taut aggression to Sweet’s deceptively dark lyrics — is the true meat of the package, however.Listen to it again.This Girlfriend will haunt you — in a good way.JIM BYRNES House of Refuge Black Hen Music 1 thought it would be hard for Jim Byrnes to top his 2004 recording Fresh Horses, but you can never sell this guy short.The singer-songwriter populates his new disc, House of Refuge, with fellow Vancouver musicians, but has them play the music he grew up with in his Missouri youth — blues, gospel, and acoustic soul.Call it a successful border crossing.The opening track, the handclapping ‘Didn’t It Rain’, has vocal trio The Sojourners (Ron Small, Marcus Mosely and Will Sanders) setting the tone with some sweet a cappella sounds before the band kicks in, Elliot Pol-sky’s bass drum beating out the song’s heartbeat.That gospel feel is recreated on a half-dozen tunes, one of the best being ‘Today’, a rootsy blues in the style of Keb ‘Mo’, where Steve Dawson, who produced the recording, lays out some great slide guitar.-C.N.VARIOUS ARTISTS WWE: Wreckless Intent Columbia Wreckless Intent is the soundtrack to a wrestling match, Vince McMahon style.The album is packed with tracks that serve as preludes to a World Wrestling Entertainment ring match.The album brings together a variety of hard rock, heavy metal, and even has a few rap tracks thrown in.The WWE has long been reaching out of the ring and into the music industry with testosterone-pumped albums.It features bands including Saliva — whose T Walk Alone’ is the anthem for Smackdown’s Batista — and Motorhead — whose ‘King of Kings’ ushers Triple H into the stadium.The album is fast paced and energy charged, but the music isn’t as entertaining.-T.L.ccer;
