Reg )Rd WEEK Arts and Entertainment Magazine November 28-December 4 , 1997 Arlette Vittecoq and the art of TANYA TKACH/CORRESPOND ' : page 2 November 28-December 4, 1997 Townshipm ehk Talk of the Townships Grab your thermal underwear and get out there How do I love winter?Let me count the ways.I really love winter and no, I’m not joking.I’m one of those elusive Canadian creatures who genuinely loves anything and everything related to the snowy season. Most people think that my kind doesn’t really exist, that we’re like Sasquatch or the Loch Ness Monster, a little bit of urban folklore. But, I’m RAKIM: The 18th Letter (Universal Records) Rakim is back in full force minus Eric B.Even without his old teammate, he was able to get some great help from DJ Premier, Pete Rock and DJ Clark Kent on this album. The album has some amazing tracks like “The 18th Letter,” “It’s Been A Long Time,” “Remember That,.rhe Saga Begins” and the best track, "Guess Who's Back”.Rakim uses some great samples (mostly from his old songs) and puts them together like a pro.The only negative aspect of this album is that Rakim seems to think he’s some kind of god.On “It’s Been A Long -Time,” he surprises us with lyrics such as “The crowd couldn’t wait to see this.Nobody been this long-awaited since here to tell you right now, we aren’t mythological beings. We’re every bit as real as the frost on your windows and the nip in your petunias.I know people who love winter are a rare sort, but I think I can explain why some of us genuinely love this season Jesus.” It’s kind of ironic that the worst song on this album is called “The Mystery (Who Is God?).” While the first half of the album is unbeatable, the second half goes nowhere. The two R&B tracks: “Stay A While” and “Show Me Love” are saved by the beautiful voices of Nneka Nneka and Robyn Small. The two remixes of “It’s Been A Long Time” and “Guess Who’s Back” are really unnecessary.I didn’t notice any real difference from the original versions. This album is probably one of the top ten rap albums for 1997.The problem is, it hasn’t been promoted properly by the record company.Marty Mix CJMQ dee-jay Special to the Record First of all, winter lovers like myself don’t own cars so we never have to go outside at 7 a.m.to brush, scrape, defrost, de-ice and de-fog our cars while reciting a litany of curses. We also never have to face icy roads and intersections from Hell, where the cars in rush hour traffic try to manoeuvre themselves to a complete stop when the ice on the roads would have them do otherwise. No, our blood pressure stays nice and normal as we walk to our destinations with a Christmas song in our hearts and a bounce in our step.Second of all, when our destination is too far to reach on foot, winter lovers like myself use public transportation and because we sometimes rely on public transportation, we’ve been completely de-sensitized to virtually all aggravations.Come on! We’ve gone hurtling down the hill on Belvedere St.in Lennoxville at 120 mph on a city bus. We’ve screeched through red lights and almost run down pedestrians while our bus driver laughed maniacally. We’ve kissed the ground and thanked God every time we reached our destination safely. After these kinds of experiences, is a little blizzard supposed to frazzle us?No way! Third, winter lovers truly love the winter air and genuinely enjoy winter sports. However, most of them, including myself, aren’t particularly good at any of them. But does that stop us?No! I go to the skating rink with my kids, and I skate not by gliding gracefully across the ice on my fur-lined skates. No, I skate by gliding down about two feet of ice on my skates and then sliding down the next twenty feet of ice on my butt. And 1 love every second of it.When I go sliding with my kids, it’s a sure bet that not only will I locate the one tree that no other sledder has crashed into, but I will actually hop on the toboggan, find that tree, crash into it at full speed, and then dust myself off and do it all over again. And I’ll love it more every single time. Most importantly, all winter lovers greet the sight of falling snow with gushes of “oooh” and “aaah” and we immediately start to pester anyone within our reach to go out for a walk with us.The person who finally does go for a walk with us has to be someone who never gets sick of hearing the phrase, “Don’t you just love this snow?” You see, we repeat that phrase with varying degrees of enthusiasm over and over again once we get into the great outdoors and even if you tell us to shut up, we won’t stop saying it.So, whaddya think? Are you one of us?Are you proud to wear snow pants over three layers of clothing?Do you think long johns and thermal undershirts are the ultimate fashion statement?Do you hear the words “Krazy Karpet” and immediately begin to reach for your thigh-high Weather Guard snow boots? If you answered Yes to any of the above, we’re proud to count you among us.MUSIC REVIEW Rappin’ Rakim thinks he’s a god Linda’s Playground Linda Galeazzi HUS Suzanne Desautels, Leslie Roberts and Jayson Burns (centre) Join us for our 21st Telethon .and please give generously December 6th and 7th Foundation for research into children's diseases CFCF IS 0«S U TOS November 28-December 4, 1997 page 3 Towns hips vj eek IZ RECORD= Talk of the Townships Bishop’s University Singers and Chamber Choir give Christmas concerts this weekend Lennoxville choirs ring in the holiday season RACHEL BURY/CORRESPONDENT Nancy Rahn will conduct two concerts of seasonal music this weekend.mÊÊÊSÊË Sequel to 1995 hit wears thin Mortal Kombat II slightly more fun than video game Sherbrooke Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, the sequel to the 1995 smash hit, might be more entertaining than a video game, but after a while, the fun runs a little thin. The premise is simple: Liu Kang (Robin Shou)and the good guys fight it out in a deadly tournament against the evil forces of Outworld, leaving the fate of mankind in the balance. The first film ended with a winning nod for the good side. However, the viewer is left with the image of the evil Shao Khan (Brian Thompson) lurking and promising revenge.Any fan of the original film will notice there are many cast changes in the sequel. We see a different Sonya Blade, Johnny Cage, Jax and, worst of all, Lord Rayden, which takes a bit of the magic away. Also, the characters we look forward to seeing in many more bloody and exciting martial arts displays (especially Scorpion and Sub Zero), only make spo- radic appearances throughout the film. This doesn’t exactly build on the fast-paced plot and excitement of the original. However, there are a few redeeming factors, which make this sequel fairly enjoyable. For one, there is the trademark techno soundtrack, which gives any Kombat fan goose bumps. There are also elaborate special effects, which add spice to the otherwise common fight scenes we find in many action films.Surprisingly, there is a message in this flick - the benefits of working together as a team - but even that wears thin.I found it hard to learn any positive values from a group of fighters who rip bodies apart at the seams simply for the good of mankind.I often felt like limiting myself to the video game.Where’s Pac Man: The Movie when you need it?Mortal Kombat: Annihilation is playing in English at Cinema 9 in Rock Forest.By Rachel Bury Record Correspondent Lennoxville Bishop’s University Singers and Chamber Choir give their annual Christmas concert this weekend at Bandeen Hall. The choir, directed by Nancy Rahn and accompanied by Brigitte Poulin, will perform seasonal music by Telemann, Hummel and Canadian composer Ruth Watson Henderson. The first half of the concert will be dedicated to the music of the Baroque period. As well, Henderson’s “Songs of the Nativity” will be sung solely by the women in the choirs.“We tend to chose works which are easily adaptable to small choirs,” said Rahn, who recently received Lennoxville’s outstanding achievement award in the field of arts and culture. The second half of the concert will showcase the talent of the newly formed Bishop’s University Concert Band. The musicians will be playing a medley of holiday music, as well as providing accompaniment for the pop- NOTICE Christmas Tea and Sale at St.John’s Anglican Church, 60 Compton E., in Waterville on Saturday, Nov.29, from 3 to 5 p.m.V HERBALIFE flfl?DISTRIBUTEUR INDÉPENDANT ' Steve IPacje £r'Denise Soutier Sherbrooke » 1 (819) 346-8218 LOSE WEIGHT! a memory that is transmitted through the generations,” she said in French.“Because we hardly communicate with one another, photos help to keep the connection. They can also help one to understand their roots - who you are and your place in the family.” Vittecoq’s photos are not one-second snapshots of particular scenes.“I put a lot of thought into each photo.Photography is used to tell a story through the images.” In order to achieve the quality and nuances, Vittecoq said you have to know how to work in the darkroom, which she calls a “laboratory”.She sometimes spends a day printing only one photo.“It’s a very important phase of my reflection where I try to create what I saw.In the laboratory, you reinforce the image you want to portray and it takes a long time,” she said. The final phase for Vittecoq is the exhibit. The sequence of setting up the photos is crucial to her because her stories are expressed through their positioning.Vittecoq said it’s a wonderful feeling to see her finished work in a gallery and the reactions of the public.“For me it’s very enriching and it makes it all worthwhile.Even though technical photography has advanced the use of the camera, artistic photography will prevail.” Upon completion of the three-year program in France, Vittecoq obtained work almost immediately in the darkroom of a photographer’s studio in the Pigalle district of Paris. In 1967, she followed her husband to Quebec City, where he obtained a scholarship in science. While in Quebec City, she met and worked with the photographer KDL for five years.Vittecoq and her husband relocated to Sherbrooke in 1972 where she has since worked at the University of Sherbrooke.Paris is still a place close to her heart where she often visits and takes pho- tographs. But she admits she could never live there today due to the exorbitant cost of living.Vittecoq said she enjoys teaching the art of photography in the university’s visual arts program. She said that once her students take her courses, they never look at a photo in the same manner. She said lighting is the most important element in photography and the atmosphere in her photos is created through the changing light as it reflects upon shapes and textures.“I’m very influenced by the light and everything that it touches,” she said. Her latest project, Les Anges, is a series of angels displayed at various galleries in the Sherbrooke area. She said the Wim Wenders film Les Ailes du Desire was the motivating factor that led to this work.“1 like to do many variations on a theme,” she added.“And often times one theme leads to another.” She is also working on a few important projects that she said reflect her inner self. One of these is called Les Murs Qui Parle, a series of photos taken in Paris and Montreal depicting advertising and social and political statements on exterior walls.“The walls tell a story,” she said.“Even though they are stationary, life is going on around them.” Many of these photos contain rebellious graffiti that cry out to be heard.“The message is there, but we’re not listening. It is a message that I associate with life.” She said the photos placed in a series will tell the story. The completion of the project will depend on whether Vittecoq receives a provincial subsidy to defray costs. She said the frames alone cost $2,000.There is already a demand for this work: The University of Sherbrooke has promised her an exhibit upon completion.Another project of enormous undertaking - to cost approximately $50,000 -is the creation of an art book containing scenic photos of the Townships and poems depicting each scene written by local poets. The scenes are visual pleasures of the sunrise in rural and urban areas of the Townships during different seasons. She hopes each photo will invoke strong feelings in the viewer.“They will be timeless, and hopefully this book will make the public appreciate the art of photography.” In order to complete the project, Vittecoq is counting on private funding. She said sometimes publishers do not understand her ideas and private funding is necessary.Because the project focuses on art rather than tourism, she said it’s difficult to get a provincial bursary.“It’s very important to remain true to the expression of art,” said Vittecoq, who denounces photo contests as unjust. There are so many beautiful photos that it’s impossible to choose only one, she said.“Il n’y a pas de meilleur des meilleur,” she said.“It’s only a matter of opinion.” WEEK page 6 November 28-December 4, 1997 Country Twain has done it again Shania’s new album explodes on market ;:C Shania Twain's creative vision seems stronger than ever.Country Collectible No.32 Clay Walker Just like Mark Chesnutt and George Jones this talented singer comes from Beaumont, Tex.Fans took to Clay Walker from the start and even though he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in April of 1996, he hasn't cut back on his hectic schedule.Bom: in Beaumont, Tex.on Aug.19, 1969 Spouse: Lori, married Oct.24,1992 Sports: football, fishing, golf Quote: “I’m trying to live my life to the fullest like my song, “Live Until I Die." “That song fits me better than anything I’ve ever written or heard." Fan Club: The Clay Walker Fan Club, P.O.Box 1304., Tex.77627 SHANIA TWAIN: Come On Over (Mercury) It’s been about two and a half years since country great Shania Twain released a new album and fans have been getting impatient. That explains why her new recording, Come On Over, has been getting such attention and air time.Twain and her songwriting partner and husband Robert “Mutt” Lange have filled the recording with 16 great songs which should please both pop and country music fans.It seems like Twain’s creative vision is stronger than ever. The new collection offers blazing fiddles, a harder country-rock sound, pounding drums and a whole lot of fun.To coin a phrase from her first single, “Love Gets Me Every Time,” Twain has “gol darn gone and done it” again! The thumping beat that pumped many of the favorites from The Woman In Me, is even more prominent here.Although the lyrics are a bit lighter, she still addresses some serious subjects.Twain warns possible dates to check their egos at the door on “That Don’t Impress Me Much,” while “Black Eyes, Blue Tears,” tackles the touchy subject of spousal abuse.“From This Moment On,” sung with Bryan White, is Twain’s first recorded duet.Described as a wedding song, the tune features an impressive orchestral arrangement. The rest of the album is full of high energy.“I’m Holding On To Love (To Save My Life),” is a light number that emphasizes the security of a healthy relationship.“Don’t Be Stupid (You Know I Love You),” is a gentle tirade against jealousy while “If You Wanna Touch Her, Ask!,” contains good advice to men on starting a relationship. On the humorous “Honey, I’m Home,” it looks like the tables have turned and Twain is the one who needs the tender loving care.“Rock This Country," on the other hand, will get you rocking in no time.If you’re looking for traditional country music, you might not like this album, but if you want to hear something a little different, Shania Twain has a surprise for you.RAY PRICE: Super Hits (Columbia) I strongly recommend this album to anyone who likes sentimental music.Ray Price recorded 109 hits between 1952 to 1989, so this 10-cut collection is only a small example of his work. However, fans will be glad to hear such hits as “Release Me,” recorded in 1954 and “Crazy Arms,” which was at the top of the charts for 20 weeks in 1956.There's also the pleading “Heartaches By Number” and the moody “City Lights,” which was number one for 13 weeks in 1958.Price also recorded some sophisticated material such as “I Won’t Mention It Again” and “For The Good Times.” Both of these songs were on the pop charts during the early 1970s.This collection offers a look at one of country music’s best performers and also shows us that crossover music has been around a long time.Country Connection Jessie Aulis it just i /o more Canadians were physically active, annual savings in health-care costs could be as much as $12,000,000.Sharing a Healthier Future” I would like to clarify some facts about the band Crossfire. The group is made of three former members of the band Mountain Dew - keyboard player Jeff Bray, guitarist Jeff Powers and bass player Wendell Pehllmann. The band’s new members are vocalists Karen Robinson and drummer Jeff Goodsell.John Reid can also be found singing with the band quite often.Band members say although they perform the same kind of country dance music as Mountain Dew did, they also offer a new sound. The group can also be heard on John Reid’s new album, Another Day, Another Dime.
