November 20, 2008 page 3 Making it in the music industry is ‘Hardluck” Music New Sherbrooke rock band have their work cut out for them Joe Strizzi Sherbrooke Legendary singer-songwriter Stevie Wonder once said that “music is a world within itself, with a language we all understand,” and if you happen to agree with him, then Sherbrooke’s newly formed rock group Hardluck Battleground is a band whose name alone speaks volumes about a band just trying to break into the exclusive world that is the music industry.“Becoming a professional band is tough,” said lead singer and guitarist Nik Roy.“All four of us (band members) have played in other bands, trying to make it, and things just didn’t work out.You have a lot of struggling to so be fore you can see any success, and you need a lot of luck. That’s how we chose our name.Breaking into the music business is like fighting a battle.Life is full of ups and downs, laced with a little bit of hard luck.” Roy, along with bandmates Chris Crooke (vocals, guitar), Matt Gilbert (bass), and Ivan Paré (drums) have seen their fair share of downs, playing in local dives no bigger than Britney Spears limo, and nowhere near as clean. What makes it even harder for a band the likes of Battleground in making it, whose wide array of influences include Rage Against The Machine, The Ramones, and Johnny Cash, is that they live in Sherbrooke.“We don’t have the resources that a band out in Montreal or Toronto might have to get noticed. The Anglophone population here is small, and there aren’t as many venues to play at.To top it all off, we don’t play mainstream music. We have a particular sound that would appeal a particular group,” Roy said.Despite Roy, Crooke, Gilbert going to Alexander Galt High School together in 1997-98, where Roy and Gilbert played in the school rock band together, they didn’t come together as a group until early this year.“We all had our own projects and -j- # The band is free-flowing and wildly cre- I A/,/1 ative while never crossing into the free- •l , „ for-all that seems (to this ear at least) to CONTT d FROM Page 1 permeate much of modern jazz.Percussionist Kevin Sullivan also steps nicely up to the plate with two compositions of his own, allowing him to contribute interesting rhythmic experimentation on drums.Sullivan also provides some melodic and mellow stylings on the vibraphone - clearly inspired by the late Lionel Hampton.Bassist Guy Breton demonstrates vividly the virtuosity of this often underappreciated instrument with some high-flying riffs as well as the solid bottom notes which beautifully fill out the trio’s sound. With some inspired contributions by pianist Michael Hynes, the band’s sound is full, melodic and highly rhythmic. The album also offers nice arrangements on tunes by such well-known artists as Charlie Parker, LennieTristano and Mike Stern.A rendition of the late John Lewis’ tribute to legendary guitarist Django Reinhardt is also well worth a listen. The band officially launched this album at a very well-received concert at Bishop’s University’s Bandeen Hall, last weekend. We can only hope that the Townships will begin to provide the kind of venues that would allow a healthy, vibrant jazz scene to develop here. While the Townships region has always had a healthy music scene, jazz is one genre that has been severely under-represented.With locally produced recordings like this one emerging, it wouldn’t be difficult to imagine. In the meantime, this first release provides a pleasant and enthusiastic blend of several different styles adding up to a wonderful sampling of accessible jazz fusion.Check these guys out.PURCHASING IMMEDIATELY High value offered Canadian paintings Bellefleur, Borduas, Carr, Cullen, Dallaire, Fortin, Franchère, Gagnon, Heward, Huot, Krieghoff, Lemieux, Milne, Morrice, Pellan, Pilot, Riopelle, Roberts, Savage, Suzor-Côté, Group of 7, American & European Masters.Complimentary verbal appraisal for the names mentionned above.Galerie Claude Lafitte since 1975 2160 Crescent st.Montréal lafitte'i lafitte.com 514-842-1270 Cell: in the Eastern Townships: 514-208-2500 were in different bands,” said Roy.“Ivan (Paré) and I were in another band together. When we stopped playing as a band, Ivan and I decided to start a new band as a project of our own, just jamming together in August 2007.Then, Chris (Crooke), who saw our first band play, joined the group in March of this year after jamming with us, and finally Matt (Gilbert) in May after doing the same.” So was born Hardluck Battleground, and just after conception, they started playing a few shows around town.“We played a show on July 1st in Hatley and at a few bars around town, but rehearsal has hit a slight snag,” said Gilbert, bringing to light an injury the band’s drummer suffered in a work accident.“Ivan broke a finger, but a drummer doesn’t need his fingers,” joked Gilbert.“Ivan is a trooper and he’ll be back in no time.” Hardluck Battleground, once all members are off the injured reserve list, plan to perfect their sound over the next few months, and then hit spots all over the Townships with their alternative sounds.“We expressed interest in being part of Fete du Lac des Nations for next year.We are aiming that as our coming out party, after we get our name out there starting in January. There is a lot of competition out there and we have to give 110 per cent every time we play and hope that it catches someone’s attention.” For more information on the band, check out their MYSPACE page at: www.myspace.com/hardluckbattlegrou nd.îüarMurk COURTESY OF HARDLUCK BATTLEGROUND Sherbrooke's ‘Hardluck’ will have to battle to make it in the music industry.L ENERGETIC.ECLECTIC • THE 2008-2009 SEASON AT CENTENNIAL THEATRE BISHOP’S UNIVERSITY • SHERBROOKE, BOROUGH OF LENNOXVILLE ?Mireille Proulx Saturday, November 15,h at 8pm Recognized and praised by Jazz Great Dave Brubeck as a promising young artist and composer.V ^jm ?Comingup ?Leahy, November 19* ?Pianist Matt Herskowitz in an "All Gershwin" program, November 21a ?Jazz standards with singer Emilie-Claire Barlow, November 28* BOX OFFICE: 819-822-9692 • VISIT our web site at WWW.CENTENNIALTHEATRE.CA CI-AK 883^ SiW-rooke canadien Heritage Québec¦ iTIIK, page 4 November 14 -
