Photo-art exhibit at the Pettes Memorial Library, a deliberate break with the usual brush and canvas program, illustrates just how a century old trade can blend gracefully with the secular architecture in which this historic building is steeped. For photographers Walter and Sandra Paré, the exhibit represents an opportunity to broaden horizons, both theirs and the publics.“Photo-art is one of the most under-appreciated art forms around,” explains Walter when asked about how he feels about his work.“It’s like antiques. It’s a very old art form that can be appreciated not only for the beauty of the art, but also itself because of its relevance to history.” The Parés, who call both Knowlton and Brassard home, are quick to underline that the five colour and dozen black and white prints they selected for the display require the use of techniques and abilities that go beyond simply picture taking. The application of these skills is visibly apparent in their colourless stills, images that appear to capture nature in unwitting moments of play. The photographs of trees shrouded in a thick mist illustrate how light, shadows and the nearly palpable texture of the surrounding air continuously sculpt the visu- wmm.al manifestations of shapes and tones.“Instead of brushes, paint and canvas, I use a camera and film as tools to capture a subject,” explained Walter of the various framed photographs that cover most of the walls of his modest studio on Maple Street in Knowlton. The smooth definition of his prints betrays his use of four by five-inch large format film that re quires the use of a bulky camera and tripod he carries while backpacking from site to site. Both Walter and Sandra worked at Canadian Pacific, until a few years ago when the company moved some of its operations from Montreal to Calgary.Instead of following, the couple decided to stay in the province and convert the carriage house that stands next to his grandfather’s former home in Knowlton into a small studio-lab and comfortable pied-à-terre for their weekly commute to and from the city. For the first time in six years, the Paré’S studio will not be on the Tour des Arts circuit, an experience that according to Sandra was nothing less than wonderful.“It gave us both a lot of visibility and allowed us to make a reputation for our work in the Townships,” she said. The Paré’s combined works have also been displayed at arts and crafts shows at Manoir Lac Brome, Auberge Lakeview and the Knowlton Pub.Aside from their artistic endeavours, Walter and Sandra are also involved in work that is most often considered the photographers’ traditional domain: weddings and portraits.“There is a lot of pressure on photographers at weddings,” said Walter.“If something goes wrong, you just don’t get a second chance, which is not at all the same environment to work in as when I’m standing in nature.” Relying heavily on his 30 years of experience, 20 of which he considers professional, Walter also offers weekend-long photo-art workshops in Knowlton, taking novices and experienced photographers all the way from loading film to printing and framing their own pieces.“The workshops are very popular,” he said.“I only take in four or five people at a time so I can really focus on each one.” The exhibit runs from Saturday, June 1 to the END OF THE MONTH AT THE PETTES MEMORIAL LIBRARY in Knowlton. For more information on the Paré’s WORK AND WORKSHOPS, CALL 450-242-4469.COURTESY WALTER PARÉ In dancing trees, Paré plays on nature’s basic elements of moisture and light to coax visions of neo-spirituality from a cluster of tree trunks.^ ^ A ^ ^ A ^ A A ^ ' ^ *•»* V* * ÎJ* * •>
