Maurice Singfleld Record Correspondent - CIDI Christmas came early for CIDI.Broadcasting full-time for the first time since the beginning of November has given everyone at the studio a lift.It’s been a long road, and will continue to be so, well into the future.This year, for residents of the Town of Brome Lake and Waterloo, community radio is a new experience.Come November of next year, Radio Communautaire Missisquoi (RCM) plans to introduce CIDI to most of Brome Missisquoi and parts of Shefford County with a 500 watt transmitter on a Patch Hill tower, just outside of Brome, depriving Santa once again of delivering RCM’s Christmas present.Instead of Santa, RCM has its community deliver the gift of radio, because without the support of local businesses, the municipal council of Brome Lake and members of its listening community CIDI wouldn’t exist.Talk about spirit.The little station that could is on the map and fulfilling a need.It’s being who we are.Isn’t that great?Over the past three years I have had the pleasure of working with a team of CIDI believers; the board of directors and management of RCM.To a certain degree one could say that we believe in Santa Claus, because there were times when people thought we’d never get this project off the ground.And, then there were times we caved in, thinking they were right.Fortunately we perse- vered.Unlike Christmas, community radio is celebrated every day.That’s the wonderful thing about broadcasting, it brings all of us together, family and friends, and doesn’t need a special time of the year to be recognized.We can give each other gifts of expression wrapped in sincerity and feel good about ourselves without spending a fortune on presents.Christmas however, is not the only religious celebration at this time of year.There is also Hanukkah, the “Festival of Lights,” which starts on the 25th day of the Jewish calendar month of Kislev and lasts for eight days and nights.It too has a tradition of gift-giving, with blessings, games, and festive foods.Nothing in this world is perfect accept the ability we have as humans to accommodate each other.As a piano tuner, I have learned that a well tuned piano is one that is put out of tune just the right amount.All musical intervals (3rds, 4ths, 5ths etc.) have to accommodate each other.If one insists on being perfect it jeopardizes the overall harmonic purity of the instrument.Much the same as people living in the earth.No matter what we believe as communities, culturally we have to get along if we want peace and harmony in our world.When we listen to the radio we “tune in,” but are we in tune?CIDI is like no other radio station you have ever heard, because it presents who we are, Please see CIDI on page 2 DAVID ANDERSON ’ 1 unn it f* - ( 70% New Canadian Releases Country, Folk, Jazz, Pop and more Local Regional and World News Updates W'eather and Sports coverage Timely Interviews, Local Artists Programs serving our community Community Radio CJIMQ 88.9 FM Have you listened to us lately?Now at 2000 Watts! January 1, 2008 page 3 Roger Abbott As Roger Abbott says, the Chicken Cannon is right up there with the k doughnut as the ultimate ¦ expression of Canadian identity.“ Those two things have been our icons for the series,” says the co-founder of Royal Canadian Air Farce, which is ending its 15-year run on CBC Television with “Air Farce New Year’s Eve Final Flight” Wednesday, Dec.31.“How Canadian: a doughnut shop and a thing that fires food at pictures.“It’s the violent nonviolence of it that I find funny.1 he Chicken Cannon has the potential for enormous violence.But instead of putting real weapons in it, we pur in ketchup and chopped-up cheese.Instead of firing it at a real person, we go with symbolic targets.It’s so gentle and so much a part of our peacekeeping nature.Then we sit down and have a tasty doughnut.” And with that last blast of the Chicken Cannon, Air Farce recedes into history.Air Farce debuted on CBC Radio in 1973 as a team of five: Abbott, Don Ferguson, Luba Coy, Dave Broadfoot and John Morgan.Broadfoot left in 1988, and the remaining four members brought the show to TV with a New Years special in 1992 and then, the following year, with the series.By then, Air Farce had a loyal following of listeners who loved its topical political sketches laced with groaners, sly jabs and broad impersonations of strange Canadian personalities.It also had many detractors, who regarded the show as corny and obsessed with Canadian politics and minutiae.“There are two phrases we hear about a lot,” Abbott says.“Ne\v Canadians say to us, ‘Everything I know about Canada I learned from watching your show.’ And we always think, ‘Dear God, what are we responsible for?’ “And then families -
