the bank, the school, the retail stores, the church - he had to keep reminding himself that it wasn’t the real thing.“It was a very remarkable set,” Freeman recalls.“It was hard for me to realize that we were able to get that kind of authentic look in a closed setting.” Paramount officials consider the set for Hard Rain to be one of the most extraordinary technical achievements in Hollywood history. But it was a set under siege: once director Mikael Salomon was satisfied that the fictional town of Huntingburg had been recreated as meticulously as possible, he proceeded to threaten it with destruction by turning on the taps and flooding the area with an estimated 22-million-litres of water.“It was a wet and wild ride,” laughs co-star Christian Slater, who was also a producer on the project.Like Freeman, he was in awe of the set design, as was Minnie Driver, who also has a role in the movie.“The attention to detail is just amazing,” says Driver.“But there is something weird about driving a boat down the street with these full-sized buildings looming on either side.” The film, which opens Jan.16, was originally entitled The Flood and scheduled for release last summer. But after industry analysts looked at the disappointing box office for films like Volcano and decided that the public was shunning disaster movies, Paramount gave it a new name and rescheduled its release for early 1998.Hard Rain is essentially a crime thriller set in a community that has fallen victim to rampaging flood waters. The town is being evacuated and Slater plays an armored car driver assigned to pick up $3 million from local banks and transport it to a safer area.Freeman plays the aging career thief who’s determined to steal the money.Driver plays a young woman whose restoration of a historic church faces destruction by the flood waters, and Randy Quaid is a local sheriff who finds himself caught in the middle of things. The film is scripted by Graham Yost, the Canadian writer whose first big breakthrough came with Speed. When Danish-born director Salomon first read Yost’s screenplay, he decided it had all the elements of a traditional western - except that it took place in a contemporary small-town setting.“That’s how I saw it - the armored car is the stage coach and these bad guys are trying to hit it,” Salomon says.“People shouldn’t take it too seriously. It’s entertainment. It’s fun.” However, he did want everything to look authentic.Obviously, no real town would allow a film crew to move in and hit it with floodwaters, so this posed a challenge in giving moviegoers the kind of vista that would convince them they were seeing the real thing. No studio soundstage could accommodate the kind of set Salomon envisaged so he went searching for a facility that could. He found exactly what he wanted in Palmdale in an enormous hangar once used to manufacture B-l bombers. It was an ideal place for replicating at least 50 wooden buildings and for creating a devastating flood.“This hangar was enormous, one of the biggest structures in the U.S.Yet it had no visible supporting pillars, and that was really what I was looking for. When I found it, I couldn’t believe my eyes.” The buildings constructed along the town’s main street were in actuality no more than false-fronted exteriors, but in the movie they are indistinguishable from the real thing.Scenes were lit by overhead work lights in the hangar’s ceiling: these were later eliminated by computer and replaced with a night sky.The hangar provided an unexpected bonus in several giant cranes capable of lifting up to 40 tons. They could easily hoist one section of a set and transport it elsewhere in order to expose an entirely different building. This was necessary because even in a hangar area two football fields long and one football field wide, space was at a premium.“We built a lot of sets on top of each other. For example, when we were done with Main Street, we could lift Main Street out and there would be this school behind it.Then we could lift out the school and expose this cemetery.” A tank five-feet-high and capable of holding 22 million litres of water in which the scenes of the flooded town were shot was built at the base of the hangar.“They even had a well on the site to supply the water,” Salomon says.“It was amazing the way everything fell into place.” Five feet was considered the right depth. It allowed passage of boats. It also allowed actors to struggle convincingly.Salomon says his actors were “real sports” about being forced to spend day after day in water and driving rain.In addition to the millions of litres of water in the tank, Salomon also had to ensure an ample supply of additional water to depict the moment when the emergency gates on the dam are opened and create a violent flood surge, and also to subject the characters to heavy rainfalls.Effects co-ordinator John Frazier says the project needed auxiliary “dump tanks” capable of sending 136,200 litres of water pelting down every minute.Quips Driver: “This is a movie where you don’t worry about makeup.” The Complete Computer Course Acann ail t&c Sddicd Evening course - so that bow tie was incongruously matched with a blue blazer, a pair of dungarees and a scruffy beard. But the crowning glory was a battered hat that De Niro discovered in the wardrobe department.“It was crushed in this odd, eccentric way,” he says reverently.“There was no way you could actually plan a hat to look like that.I thought - this is great!” For the remainder of shooting, De Niro acted as personal custodian for this unorthodox headgear: “Every night I would put it carefully in a hat box so that it would stay nice and flat with all those creases.” De Niro is a notoriously press-shy actor. But he’s so gung-ho about Wag The Dog that he’s spending an entire weekend talking to reporters about a movie that has had both Washington and Hollywood buzzing for weeks. It involves some high-powered talent beginning with the pairing of De Niro as the political spin doctor and Dustin Hoffman as an egotistical Hollywood producer named Stanley Motss. The director is the Oscar-winning Barry Levinson (Rain Man) and the witty, acerbic screenplay comes from Pulitzer Prizewinning dramatist David Mamet. But the movie is also an act of faith on the part of the participants, with De Niro’s ownTribeca production company and Levinson’s Baltimore Pictures as key investors. It was shot in less than a month with the principals waiving any payment up front.Compared with the $200 million US that director James Cameron spent on Titanic, Wag The Dog looks like a veritable minnow with its $15 million budget.Levinson happily points out that there are real virtues in keeping costs low on a film like this.“It means we can make it as edgy and cynical as we want.” Those adjectives certainly apply to Wag The Dog with its portrayal of politicians who will go to whatever outrageous lengths are necessary to save their hides. It also depicts the media and the public as gullible enough to be hoodwinked. It’s two weeks before election day, and the president’s bid for a second term is in danger of collapsing because of a sexual scandal.Enter the ultimate White House spin doctor in the person of De Niro - a mystery figure with an uncanny gift for manipulating politics, the media and the public. His solution to the problem is to divert media attention from the president’s problems by orchestrating a new and better news story - a war that’s not really happening. To assist him in this enterprise, he ropes in flamboyant Hollywood producer Stanley Motss (Hoffman sporting the mannerisms and hairdo of controversial real-life producer Robert Evans) to fabricate “authentic” newsreel footage of the conflict that has broken out between the U.S.and, of all countries, Albania.De Niro concedes that a plot like this will give conspiracy theorists a field day, but he also points out that Wag The Dog is only a movie.“I’m glad there’s a healthy cynicism out there, but I tend to not give as much credence as some people do to these theories of conspiracy and intrigue.I think that basically people aren’t smart enough or clever enough or devious enough to come up with what happens in our movie.” On the other hand, De Niro adds, people keep reminding him that Ronald Reagan conveniently decided to invade Grenada two days after his administration found itself in crisis after 241 U.S.marines were killed in a terrorist bombing in Beirut. The film’s original inspiration was a novel, American Hero, by Larry Bein-hart.De Niro’s Tribeca company authorized an initial screen treatment by Hilary Henkin and then started circulating the project in Hollywood circles.Hoffman was the next to come on board and he suggested Levinson as director. The consensus was that the script needed a tougher edge and De Niro suggested Mamet, a writer both he and Hoffman revere.Levinson says: “We had developed a topic that was ripe for satire and we thought David was a natural for the material .He is certainly the premier playwright of our generation.” For De Niro, the project had several built-in bonuses. One was the opportunity to speak Mamet’s dialogue.“He’s in his own world with these very specific rhythms.” Another was the presence of Levinson at the helm; De Niro had worked with him in Sleepers and couldn’t wait to repeat the experience.“Besides Barry liked this idea of creating a war. He’d once worked as a journalist in Washington and had already been doing some thinking along these lines before we came along.” Thirdly, there was the chance to co-star with Hoffman; the two had both acted in Sleepers but their paths had scarcely crossed during shooting.Hoffman thinks De Niro’s performance will surprise a lot of people.“I knew Bob had a sense of humor,” Hoffman says.“I didn’t know that he had such an acute sense of humor. His observation of character is very acute." De Niro’s reply to this is that Conrad Brean is a great part to play.“He's obviously a fixer, a spin doctor. But he’s more than that because he’s been brought in to do this special kind of surgery - he has to deflect a scandalous situation and serve as a liaison between others who have the power of making things happen.” Robert De Niro and Dustin Hoffman star in Barry Levinson's Wag The Dog opening in theatres Jan.9.FILM LISTING | from Friday, Jan.9th to Thursday, Jan.15th | LE FACTEUR (16+) Every night: 7:00 p.m.MATUSALEM II (G) Saturday & Sunday: 1:00/3:30 p.m.I TITANIC (G) (Original version) I Week days: 4:30/8:00 p.m.1 Weekend: 1:00/4:30/8:00 p.m.j I JACKIE BROWN (13+) (French Version) I Every night: 7:00 p.m.j I ANASTASIA (G) (French Version) I Saturday & Sunday: 1:00/3:30 p.m.I TOMORROW NEVER DIES / 007 (13+) I Every night: 6:45/9:30 p.m, « I Saturday & Sunday: 12:45/3:30/6:45/9:30 p.m.AMISTAD (13+) (French Version) Every night: 6:20 / 9:25 p m.i Saturday & Sunday: 12:20 / 3:25 / 6:20 / 9:25 p.m.LE DESTIN DE WILL HUNTING (13+) (Violence) Every night: 6:40/9:25 p.m.Saturday & Sunday: 12:40/3:25/6:40/9:25 p.m.FRISSONS 2 (16+) Every night: 6:45 / 9:30 p.m.Saturday & Sunday: 9:30 p.m.1 MAMAN, JE M'OCCUPE DES MÉCHANTS (G) Saturday & Sunday: 1:00/3:25/7:00 p.m.LES BOYS (13+) Every night: 6:50/9:25 p.m.Saturday & Sunday: 12:50/3:25/6:50/9:25 p.m.I UN LOUP-GAROU DE PARIS (13+) (Violence) 1 Every night: 6:50/9:30 p.m I NE RÉVEILLEZ PAS UNE SOURIS QUI DORT (G) 1 Saturday & Sunday: 1:00/3:25 p.m.Gift certificates on sale page 4 January 9-15, 1998 Townshipsw eek Variety Political books make for good reading Instead of slipping on the ice, slip into a book By Paul Wells Southam News Ottawa With freezing rain and power outages being reported throughout the region, there are two books you can read to help take your mind off of the cold.If you’re interested in politics here are the books for you.In English, there’s Christopher Moore’s 1867: How the Fathers Made a Deal.In French, there’s Jean-Pierre Der-riennic’s Nationalisme et Démocratie.“Christopher Moore lives in Toronto and is not a professor,” reads the biographical note at the back of 1867.He sure isn’t.He’s a writer, and in the best sense, a journalist. His new book brings the Confederation conferences of 1864 -Charlottetown in September, Quebec City in October - to vivid, fascinating life.Better, Moore examines Confederation in a way that offers lessons for today’s politicians and voters. The Fathers of Confederation have suffered a century and a quartre of bad press, written off as undemocratic, slap dash, either blandly pragmatic or drunk to the gills.“When the boys went down to Charlottetown, they spent a lot of time in places other than the library,” Brian Mulroney said, with his virtuoso command of innuendo, in 1990.Moore does follow the boys, with considerable glee, out of the library.Turns out Charles Tupper was rather too much of a lady’s man, and Ned Whelan probably ate himself into an early grave. But Moore also points out that Sir John A.MacDonald’s boys spent considerably more time in the library than Mul-roney’s boys did at Meech Lake.In fact, 1867 (the book) celebrates 1867 (the Constitution) as a triumph of process design.Government leaders brought opposition leaders, giving the initiative to legislatures instead of executives.Long, long hours were spent sweating details.Unanimity was never a requirement. And from the united province of Canada were born the separate provinces of Ontario and Quebec - the latter with all the legislative powers it needed to govern what Hector Langevin called “a separate people.” Some folks still talk like that, which is why Derriennic’s book makes an excellent stocking-stuffer for your friends who voted Yes in 1995, or flirted with the idea.Published in the spring of 1995, Nationalisme et Démocratie remains as current as Stéphane Dion’s next letter.Better written too.In 140 pages, the soft-spoken Laval University professor takes a big stick to most of the ideas driving Quebec’s sovereigntists.I don’t have nearly enough room to properly laud this book, so let me quote from it.On why “civic Québécois nationalism" will never draw immigrant votes: “For any inhabitant of the province of Quebec, there are two possible civic nationalisms: Québécois civic nationalism and Canadian civic nationalism. With the arguments of civic nationalism - attachment to just laws, to liberty and to dignity - there is no reason to prefer one to the other, and even less to accept the risks and costs of an institutional change whose result would be that one could no longer, as today, have both at once.” On an insoluble riddle - which is more valid, a pan-Canadian referendum, a Quebec referendum, or referendums within Quebec?“The only solution to this insoluble riddle is to avoid asking it.It is to teach our school-children that one rarely chooses one’s fellow citizens, but that one has a duty to act as a fellow citizen to all of them, without ever trying to decide, by whatever method, which to accept and which to reject.” Sounds good to me.Happy New Year to everyone! January 9-15, 1998 page 5 Townships'w eek Cuver Story Heritage at Home on display through January A little bit of history By Murielle Parkes Record Correspondent Mansonville The Potton Heritage Association is not letting people forget about the cultural richness of the area.An exhibition titled Heritage at Home is the latest in a series of four shows presented by the association over the past year, thanks to the efforts of Gerard Leduc, Andrée Gratton and Jean Soumis. The exhibit, on loan from Stanstead’s Colby-Curtis Museum and organized by its curator Herve Gagnon, is currently on display at the Reilly House in Mansonville until Jan.31, 1998.“The Industrial Revolution which started around 1860 had a profound impact on the economic life in the Eastern Townships,” said Leduc, president of the association. He said for one, it was a time of manufactured goods.“Handicrafts were fading away to be replaced by cheap mass production.A new way of life was started when industrialization of cities and emigration from the country began .(and) land was being abandoned by those looking for an easy urban life.‘Modernism’ appeared and the middle-class was encouraged to be fashionable.” The exhibit addresses this issue by featuring manufactured objects that were part of everyday life from 1860 to 1910 - vintage clothing, hardware, glass, lamps, food, publicity posters, even reproductions of a number of pages from the Eaton’s catalogue of 1901-02.As well, there are a variety of items from the Reilly House collection along with pertinent documentary books borrowed from the Legion Memorial Library.Giroux and Giroux Hardware, in business since 1918, has also lent several items from its own collection. Two pieces of office equipment illustrate an era when financial tasks were performed manually: A bulky Burroughs “calculating machine” (1908), which would have claimed its own desk, and a wood and brass cash register, patented Jan.19, 1893.The latter could hold the American money of its time, said Pierre Giroux, the family’s heritage buff and fourth-generation manager of the business. It was too small for the larger Canadian bills.Equally impressive is the section on communication technology, modern in its day: ancient by today’s standards. Two hefty business machines are on display: An 1897 Empire typewriter and a 1903 phonograph, originally intended by Edison (1877) “for dictating letters, transmitting information and circulating proficiency courses, in particular, languages and medicine.” Giroux has also contributed the containers for the perfume and two other in-house products -an ointment and a cough syrup - “made right in the store” and under patent to the Eskimo Ointment Company of Mansonville. The listed ingredients for the syrup include roots, bark and menthol - all in sync with today’s demand for back-to-nature ingredients.Today’s consumer would have also been quite relieved to read that the product contained “no opium, cocaine, heroin, morphine or any other drug (make that “poisons,” if you happen to be French-speaking) so that this syrup can be given to children without danger.” Seemingly, however, the syrup did contain a generous share of alcohol.DAVID ANDERSON/CORRESPONDENT 40 MS ' A tum-of-theit'l Catwalk 10:30 PM B Épopée en Amérique "Une histoire populaire du Québec” 129) Frasier ED Real TV m Paul Stankard: Inventing Illusions pP/'l (10:45) Bravonews HIJ4 What’s for Dinner?(R) *t-lA NBA Basketball.(Live) 11:00 PM S) (S 0 ü News 0 National 0 (11:25) News GD (11 20) Cinéma ?‘‘Le Choix de Sophie” (1982, Drame) 0 Sportsline.B CTV News (22) (11:05) M*A*S*H (29) Cops ED Vibe (33) Viewers' Choice 0 Only Fools and Horses f:W Law & Order FTTH NYPD Blue [H.'l.'l CNN/Soorts Illustrated.IHltH Discovery.ca (R) 1 AVI World News MU4 Gentle Doctor: Veterinary Medicine I Cr.Y.’l Oz (R) IIM Real America: 48 Hours (R) fim 100 Huntley Street QJJ Go Girl (R) >'it'l Tarzan iuiA Dallas 11:30 PM (T) (11:35) Late Show (5) (11:35) Tonight Show 0 (11:55) Movie ?“Darkman” (1990, Suspense) A scientist seeks revenge on the thugs who disfigured him.B TVA Sports B (11:55) Mini / Quotidienne / Banco / Super 7 / Extra 0 (22] (11:35) Nightline 0 fO News fa (11 45) Sportsnight.(29) Judge Judy 0 Charlie Rose ih:i:i Moneyline (R) 1 AVI NWI Business News I 'I J4 Cottaoe Life (R) iVrl’l Two Point Four Children I’l i'l Super Dave Osborne 12:00 AM B (12:05) Karonana B (12:20) National média 0 (22) (12:06) Politically Incorrect 0 (12:05) South Park 0 (12:03) Jocelyne 0 Keenen Ivory Wayans I29) Star Trek: The Next Generation ES Cinéma ?“Sauvez le Neptune” (1978, Drame) 0 Paid Program f.Ul Biography “Judy Garland: Beyond the Rainbow” IA'f'1 Homicide: Life on the Street Q2EJ NewsNight G23 Prince of the Predators ÇÇ3 International Hour Mill Martha Stewart Living (R) Mltd'.'l Movie ?“Scandal” (1989, Drama) A British cabinet minister has an affair with a showgirl.Ancient Prophecies One (R) (Part 2 of 2) fM Skylight (R) I'.'ilA Barbara Walters: Interviews of a Lifetime tjili Are You Being Served?H.'l.'l Auto Racing.(R) 12:30 AM GD (12:37) Late Late Show (D (12:37) Late Night B (12:45) National média 0 (22) (12:38) Paid Program 0 (12:35) Mad TV ED Paid Program (33) Land for Learning: Justin Morrill and America’s Land-Grant Colleges and Universities (R) ES Stargazer IH.'I.'I Showbiz Today (R) I4IJ4 Lynette Jennings Home (R) I’HA Up on the Roof (R) I'.'i i.' And pay up!” Yes, although he received no screen credit, Malkovich is the narrator.Send questions of general interest to Canadian Viewers' Voices c/o TVData Features Syndicate, 2482 Yonge St., P.O.Box 45124, Toronto, Ont.M4P3E3 or e-mail to jus-task@tvdata.com.Only questions selected for this column will be answered.Personal replies cannot be sent.Rob Morrow’s decision to leave Northern Exposure was the death knell that eventually ended the show.TVDATA : .Fleischman?Thursday 8:00 PM © Promised Land [5) {D Friends Q Witness O Le Poing J 0 gu Prey (3 Diagnosis Murder (Part 1 of 2) (29) IQ King of the Hill (R) IS Cinéma “La Proie" (1988, Horreur) (H Science Odyssey (Part 5 of 5) EB Nature UU Biography “Carol Burnett: Just to Have a Laugh" lA'l'i Telescope (R) IH.'I.’I Prime News I'iMH Animal Tracks lY.'l Lead HI34 National Geographic on Assignment 1 liW.'l Sweating Bullets GB Medical Detectives I'LKl Sorry!
