Lennoxville Last Monday, found artist Fabienne Lasserre and her assistant were surrounded by 100 television sets.Banks of television sets forming elaborate works had been set up and everywhere at their feet were black and white television sets.“This is the show in progress,” Lasserre explained, taking time out PERRY BEATON/SPECIAL Fabienne Laserre used 100 television sets for her exhibit, The Cave.SgVM from the very physical job of mounting her work in her exhibit entitled The Cave.“On the screens, I’ve used black outdoor oil housepaint.I paint the whole screen black and then I etch out the pictures.My boyfriend does etching,” Lasserre laughed, “and I borrowed his tools.“When the screens are all turned on in the black room, the effect is like stained glass.The light goes only where the etching has been.It makes a nice sound and it flickers because the images move and it’s bluish.” Walking around the room from television set to television set, the powerful influence of mythology is felt.“I am inspired by mythology of every different culture and epoch and pop culture and the link between the past and the present as if monsters, heroes and gods are the same with different appearances,” Lasserre said, pointing out some of the different works.“I am looking at Mickey Mouse, Cal-imero, dragons and goddesses.They’re not really mythological characters, but inspired by mythology and mixed and blended together,” she explained.“I wanted to use images of different kinds of power, use satire, humour and black humour at the same time as something as something religious.I like to look at this as a little Chapel or a cave with religious paintings on the wall - a contemporary chapel made with garbage tv’s.” One large installation of sets involves a boiling pot containing ninja turtles and cartoonish animals mixed with elephants and a cat.Another group of sets involves a large goddess with three breasts and three heads exploding in different directions.This illustrates the goddess is changing identity.A voodoo goddess smoking a cigarette with an animal on her head is portrayed standing on a lotus flower.She has cut one of her breasts off.In one hand she holds the breast and in the other, a knife.Lasserre has done her research.“I’m always looking at and reading about India.I lived in Mexico,” she said.“I like the Aztec and Mayan legends a lot.There is a balance between good and evil, creation and destruction coming from cycles.I like the colours they use in their paintings.” When asked if she missed using colour, Lasserre looked thoughtful.“Right now I’m painting and I’m using every colour I can, so there must be a connection,” she said.The Cave exhibit runs until April 2 at Bishop’s University Art Gallery.The gallery will be closed from Feb.29 to Casa Chirico proved it by holding over its special menu for lovers until the weekend when snow was cleared from the region’s massive Valentine’s Day storm.The romantically-inclined menu included a plate sized heart-shaped pasta stuffed with cheese (Coeur de Cupidon), Veal cutlets a la Don Juan, Escargots Romeo and Potage Julietta, Cappellini Ethena and other delicacies named in honour of the world’s great lovers.Many of the weekend diners enjoying the special menu at the cozy Italian eatery admitted they were belatedly celebrating Valentine’s Day.Others had already discovered the fine menu and taste of Southern Italy offered up there regularly by chef Salvatore Beltrano.Casa Chirico is located across the street from Sherbrooke’s Musée des beaux arts on Dufferin Street and at first glance gives the impression it is the storage centre for overflow art from the museum.Not a square inch of wall space is left unadorned in the rambling basement that winds into three separate dining areas each with its own eclectic collection of posters and paintings that defy a theme.The madonna and child share a wall with the chefs own creative endeavours and scenes of Italy abound.But the real artistry is in the food.We began our lover’s special with a bowl of steaming mussels (Moules Cyrano) and the stuffed heart-shaped pasta (Coeur Enflammé) covered in a delicate tomato sauce made from fresh Italian tomatoes and just a touch of basil.The chefs potage followed, delivering a thick and creamy vegetable purée.My choice for main course was Saumon Molisano, a thick salmon filet in a white wine sauce which was served with strips of homemade pasta and colourful al denté vegetables.The lin-guini Amattriciana was equally delicious and the chefs lightly seasoned sauce was a real treat for pasta aficionados.The accompanying bread basket did not weather the Valentine delay quite as well, sadly.Special mention should be made of the helpful and personalized service that made each diner feel like a special guest.Dessert is not included in the table d’hôte menu but a special almond cake is worth the extra $3.95 if there’s still room.A fruit and cheese plate is also available for $5.95 and the house special, Fromage flambé with honey is an experience for $8.95.Diners are invited to bring their own wine which keeps the meal within an affordable range for such fine food.The Valentine’s Day special ran about the same as the restaurant’s regular table d’hôte menu, from $15.95 to $34.95.Casa Chirico also features a wonderful lunchtime menu daily from Tuesday to Friday from Remembering slaves in New France Speaker to discuss the history of New World slavery By Caroline Kehne Record Correspondent Derby Line, VT Norwich University scholar Raymond Zirblis will speak this Friday at 7:30 p.m.at the Haskell Free Library in Derby Line, Vermont, on the institution of slavery in the New England and Canada.“It is not commonly known that slavery was a well-established institution in colonial times on the Canadian side under French control and later, under the British,” said Zirblis, speaking from his Norwich University office, j “Every part of society had a part in it.Ifot everybody had a slave, but TF'Sfcroi ; r almost everyone knew someone who had one.” Zirblis highlighted the fact that in the early days of New France, two-thirds to three-quarters of the slaves were indigenous native peoples, with the remainder being enslaved peoples of African descent.He estimates that the slave population of New France was at its peak between 4000 and 5000 people.From the time of the introduction of slaveiy, Zirblis said that governments had to address the problem of runaway slaves, many of whom headed north.He noted that 17th century French legislation automatically made British slaves entering French domain the property of the King of France.By 1640, all of the colonies had treaties for the return of runaway slaves.In 1709, a death penalty was enacted by the New York legislature for any slave found 10 miles north of Al- bany without proper papers.“In French Canada, slavery is a little more humane, probably because of the Catholic influence,” he continued.“The Church determined that slaves and native peoples had souls.“Slaves in French families went through the sacraments.” Zirblis concluded that this led to a slightly less virulent form of slavery, though it did not diminish the immorality of the institution.It also did not diminish the wrath of society for those who had crossed the line, such as Marie Angélique, the Montreal slave who, while trying to escape, set a fire that eventually engulfed half of Montreal.As punishment for her deed, she was burned at the stake at Place d’Armes.In the 1790s, Simcoe abolished slavery in Upper Canada, although Zirblis notes that this was not binding on Lower Canada.Later, in the 1830s, slav- ery was abolished throughout the British Commonwealth.Over time, the institution declined throughout the northeast, perhaps due to a heightened sense of morality, but more likely due to economic conditions that made slavery less economically feasible.Zirblis added that Canadians and New Englanders alike enjoyed the moral high ground prior to the American Civil War but have been remarkably reluctant to examine the role of slavery in the colonial North America or its subsequent legacy.“The economic sanctions that followed (in the States, seen as the Jim Crow laws) were just as devastating as the institution of slavery.” Raymond Zirblis will be the guest speaker on Friday, Feb.25 at 7:30 p.m.at the Haskell Free Library in Derby Line, Vermont. TALK OF THE Townships .- — THE —i .¦ -RproRn- February 25-March 2, 2000 page 7 A world of adventure, comedy and drama awaits movies Campbell happy to stretch for new roles By Jamie Portman Southam News New York Change frightens Neve Campbell.But she knows it’s inevitable.“If I’m not willing to take risks, I might as well stop now,” she says flatly.And of course this raven-haired Canadian beauty has no intention of quitting acting, and she is looking for risks.For example: the black comedy.Drowning Mona, which arrives in theaters March 3.Campbell, 26, sees it as a potent symbol of the new directions she is taking in what is proving to be a watershed year for her.She may be basking in the current box-office success of Scream 3, but because this is the final installment in filmmaker Wes Craven’s craftily conceived shock trilogy, she is also bidding farewell the character of Sidney, its indomitable heroine.Even more wrenching is the fact that this is the final season for Party of Five, the critically acclaimed series about a group of siblings forced to fend on their own.Campbell had signaled her intention to leave the program even before it was canceled, but she still says it will be sad to part company with the series and the character of Julia.“I have bittersweet feelings.I spent 15 hours a day, five days a week, on Party.I spent six years with these people.I spent more time being Julia than being myself in a lot of ways - which is frightening.But it is still sad to see it go.” Furthermore, she will always be grateful to both Party of Five and the Scream movies.“Party of Five is the reason I came to the States from Canada.It’s why my face got out there.It’s been great for me, a great way to work my muscles every day as an actor, and that’s something not many people get to do.As for Scream -well, we had so much fun together on those films.” But now it’s time for “new opportunities and growing and being inspired and trying new things.” Campbell has sought different roles from the the beginning.That was her rationale for doing the black-magic thriller, The Craft, during her first hiatus for Party of Five; for signing up for the Scream movies; and for going to kinky extremes with the controversial teenage movie, Wild Things.“Each time I do a project I’m very concerned about not doing the same thing the next time round.” Nevertheless, Campbell does feel more vulnerable as she enters 2000 because she no longer enjoys the protective cocoon of a hit television series.She’s out there on her own and will sink or swim by the roles she chooses.Her first priority is to slow down.“My schedule can’t ever be as hard as it was for the last six years when I was doing a television show for nine months and then two movies back-to-back during the hiatus.” So she’s looking forward to just doing films and giving herself time to pick the right scripts.That process already started for her last summer with Drowning Mona, an eccentric comedy that takes Campbell into new and untested territory.“It’s always scary to try new things.You hope you’re going to be able to pull it off, but you can’t be sure.” Which is exactly why she steeled herself to becoming involved in this darkly comic saga of murder and emotional mayhem in a small upstate New York community.The town of Verplanck seems noted for three things.One is its annual knife-throwing contest.The second is the fact that everybody drives a Yugo automobile because they come cheap.The third is that Verplanck is home to the monstrous Mona Dearly (Bette Midler), the best known and least liked woman in the community.When the brakes on Mona’s Yugo fail and plunge her to a watery death in the Hudson River, virtually everyone in town comes under the suspicion of local police chief Wyatt Rash (Danny DeVito), because virtually everyone has good reason to want her dead.Campbell plays Wyatt’s comely daughter, Ellie, who is in raptures over Mona’s death.Ellie is engaged to marry flaxen-haired local boy Bobby Calzone (Casey Affleck) and is obsessed with having the flashiest wedding the town has ever experienced.The main obstacle to Ellie’s happiness has been the unspeakable Mona, who has been sabotaging her future hub-bie’s gardening business.“My character was absolutely ridiculous!” Campbell giggles.“The film itself is absurd, so I just tried to be as silly and ridiculous as possible.” Drowning Mona was also intimidating because she was keeping company with the likes of DeVito, Midler and Jamie Lee Curtis, who plays a frowsy waitress.“You’re worldng with people who have done many comedies in the past and have been very successful at it.” Ultimately, however, the experience was liberating.“I was laughing my head off the whole time, and with that kind of character you don’t have to be concerned about how you’re going to come across.You just commit to her and hopefully it will work.” The script requires Campbell to be kissed passionately by Kathleen Wilhoite in the role of the town mechanic.“It was not my idea,” Campbell laughs.“It was in the script.” But doing the scene gave her some of her most amusing moments because DeVito’s young son was on the set that day and started freaking out over the high number of takes required to get the scene right.“Dad, why does she have to keep kissing women?” the scandalized six-year-old asked.Ellie’s copious and tumbled tinted hair has been causing a lot of comments from preview audiences who have seen Campbell’s denim-clad performance.But talking to reporters this morning she looks as though she’s on her way to a fashion shoot: her hair is fastened severely back, she’s wearing a high-necked ribbed grey sweater.She giggles that while her hair in Drowning Mona doesn’t have much to do with her, it does have a lot to do with the character of Ellie.SOUTHAM Neve Campbell’s fans will see the Canadian starlet take some risky roles in the near future, notably her upcoming turn in Drowning Mona alongside Danny Devito, Bette Midler and Jamie Lee Curtis.“It is important to change your look.These things really help you to get into a character because Ellie wouldn’t look as I do and wouldn’t dress the way I do and style her hair in the way that I do.” Later this year, another side of Campbell will be revealed with Panic in which she plays a sexually charged 23-year-old who becomes involved with middle-aged, middle-class William H.Macy.“It really was an experience.The writing is so good, and Bill Macy is an unbelievable actor.” With Campbell, the bottom line is that for all her apprehension about breaking new ground, she seems totally in control of her destiny.“I’m extremely careful about all my decisions,” she says.Asked if there was anything she wanted to change about herself, she’s firm: “There’s nothing I would change.I would just hope to continue growing.8 HI 8ÉI 111 Uy 4204, boul.Ber t r a n d - F a b i 9 Theatres - Digital .Sound Curved Screens - Free Parking — SITE INTERNET : a c t i o n f i I m .c a c i n e m a 9 Friday, Feb.25'H to Thursday, Mar.2Nl US JEUX SONT FAITS (13+ violente) Every day: 12:45 - 3:45 - 6:45 - 9:30 p.m.APPELLE-MO!
