Veggie burgers are now common in fast food outlets; supermarket sales of soy beverages have been soaring and most high-quality restaurants treat vegetarian diners with respect. On Saturday, an estimated 3,500 of the committed and the curious wandered through the Enterprise Hall at the Plaza of Nations exploring booths, sampling the fare and listening to the messages of a range of speakers at EarthSave’s Taste of Health food festival.Scores of booths offered food products and books, and restaurants served samples of their dishes at token prices. At Yogi’s Vegetarian Indian Cuisine, from Commercial Drive, $3 bought a plate of too-chewy (for me) pakoras (spinach, potato and cauliflower fritters), delicious chickpeas in a spicy tomato-onion sauce and lots of fragrant rice. You could sample organic coffee from Trees, of Granville Street, or buy tastes of uncooked food from chefs in- volved in Raw Vancouver. And there was soy-based mock duck from the Buddhist Vegetarian Restaurant in Chinatown. You couldn’t beat the fair’s admission price - free - but if the restaurants’ sample prices weren’t low enough, plenty cf vendors were offering small tastes of their wares.Soy products in various forms were unquestionably the flavour of the day.Well, make that flavours. And if you adopted the prevailing message, it will be the flavour of the new millennium.Soy was everywhere: Momo’s “Veggie-licious” mock meats; desserts and meatlike sauces from Pete’s Tofu (part of Sunrise Soya Foods); soy-nut snacks and soy-based competitors for the potato-chip-addict’s dollar. The Huck’s product line impressed my tastebuds at first bite.Brenda Hotte sells four dry-packaged variations of her protein-rich soy-based dishes: chili, veggie ground round in regular, Italian and curry-flavours, plus a veggie burger.I found the chili hearty, robust and well-seasoned.Hotte says she first ate soy-based meals six years ago, while crossing the Atlantic in a 40-foot sailboat.Once she tried, it, she said she was ready to throw away any canned meat.“I wanted to get red meat out of my diet, but I wasn’t ready for just beans and rice," she said.Back in Vancouver she went hunting for products similar to what she’d had on the sailing trip, but couldn’t find any, so she decided to for- mulate her own.Now she sells everything from consumer-size packages (available at major natural food grocers, health food stores and outdoor adventure suppliers) to large pails each making 400 servings, bought by such places as university foodservice departments. One person many of those at the event wanted to hear from was John Robbins. As the only-son heir to the Baskin-Robbins ice cream fortune, he could have led a privileged life, but instead, at age 21, he renounced “the silver spoon stuff,” and became an advocate for a plant-based diet and the humane treatment of animals. His book Diet for a New America, published 15 years ago, was a major catalyst in the rise of vegetarian eating.Robbins is now a grandfather - a lean, very fit-looking, eloquent man who has mastered the art of holding an audience.“I’m not about preaching to the converted, I’m about mobilizing the converted,” he told his listeners this weekend. When a person buys food, orders in a restaurant, he says, that presents an opportunity to talk about what you’re doing, and to “perform a revolutionary act.“Every time I eat, it’s an opportunity to take a stand - for ourselves, for the other animals, for a life-affirming way of living.” He speaks passionately about the environmental resources required by a meat-based diet (“It takes 16 pounds of grain to make the average pound of North American feedlot beef”) and about the power of the media, specifically television advertising, to distort impressions of the meat industry: “McDonald’s doesn’t want children to think about where hamburger comes from.Ronald McDonald tells kids on TV that hamburger comes from hamburger patches.Hamburger comes from ground up cows.” He’s tough on poultry producers, too, talking about “chickens raised in concentration camp conditions.” And he takes aim at organic producers of dairy products: “Just because something is organic doesn’t mean it’s humane.Animals are treated in a way I find personally offensive.” Robins drew rousing applause from his audience, and heading out into the warm June sun, those who already subscribed to his message were undoubtedly reaffirmed in their commitment; those less convinced certainly had fresh information to chew over in their minds as they chewed on a sample of toasted soy nuts. TALK OF THE Townships June 21-June 27, 2002 page 3 Discovering a corner of the Townships to explore is always an adventure day tripper Woodstock en Beauce has music, atmosphere By Stephanie Lapointe Sherbrooke I never received so many calls from English media,” said André Gagné, Woodstock en Beauce coordinator. The four day camping music festival that will take place from June 27 to the 30 on Rang 8 in Ste-Clotilde and St-Éphrem de Beauce, was an event created with the purpose of providing a stage for regional French performers, in addition to recreating the “peace and love” atmosphere of 1969.When asked why the event has suddenly piqued anglophones’ curiosity, Gagné guessed, “Oh, I don’t know.Probably because Our Lady Peace and BTO are playing this year.” Woodstock en Beauce has been an annual event for eight years now.In its debut in 1995, only 5,000 people attended over the four days.Keep in mind that if someone were there for all four days, that person was counted as four, not one.Last year that number rose to 60,000 over the four days. This year, pre-sales are over the top.People are also able to buy a ticket for specific days instead of paying a big price for all four days.“We had a lot of trouble convincing performers to come (at the beginning). They were afraid of the name, not sure if they would get paid,” said Gagné.“But as the years went by and Woodstock en Beauce became more popular, performers were more eager to participate.” Unlike other “Woodstock” attempts in the United States that turned rowdy on several occasions, the Woodstock en Beauce has reported no major incidents.Gagné said that is because there is no line up of extreme head banger groups, and people are given enough liberty to do as they please.“People don’t need a lot of rules.Where there are too many, that’s when things occur.” Firefighters even sell wood logs so that campers can make their own little fires. Not big mondo bonfires, but quaint ones that can sufficiently burn marshmallows and create the right kind of atmosphere.“If the fires get too big, the firefighters will put them out.” This year, the coordinators are warning however, that all terrain vehicles and “dust storm contests”, done by spinning the wheels of motorized vehicles in dirt, are prohibited. For the first seven years, the events were allowed.Once again this year, tents will line the flat field creating a scene reminiscent of the Smurfs’ village.Portable toilets are abundant, so is a climbing wall, a bungee trampoline and paint ball quarters. The Quebec Provincial Police will be on site along with first aid quarters for security.COURTESY OF WOODSTOCK EN BEAUCE Our Lady Peace will be performing at Woodstock en Beauce.“People from 16-60 will be there,” said Gagné.The music may not always be up to the calibre of music fests in larger cities that feature big name performers. There are a lot of homages, specifically to Creed, Metalica, Pink Floyd, Jimmy Hendrix, The Doors and Harmonium.Co-ordinators say it is the kind of music that appeals to their audience. The music of bands varies from ska/punk such as the Planet Smashers, to alternative rock from Our Lady Peace, to old rock of BTO (“Taking care of business” type songs), to Kevin Parent to 70s groups such as Honeymoon Suite to La Bottine Souriante.“Friday is more for youth.Saturday, it’s for a little older group - over 30,” Gagné said that the crowd is usually largest on Saturday nights.Last year there were around 7,000 people.Briefs More Double Identity shows coming up Double Identity, the musical comedy presented in Yiddish with English supertitles at the Saidye Bronfman Centre in Montreal, will return by popular demand in August for 10 more performances. The comical story of a Christian and a Jew who trade places in pre-Revolutionary Russia, glowingly reviewed in the June 7 edition of Talk of the Townships, will return Aug.19 to 29.Tickets are currently on sale.Tel: (514) 739 - .— THE» RECORD Painting the great Townships outdoors By Jake Brennan Record Correspondent Y von Duranleau is progressing.A self-taught painter who first put brush to palette in 1966, he finally began to study with a master in 1992 in Valleyfield, near his Coteau-du-Lac home. After a string of group exhibitions since 1980, it is now, at age 54, that he is having his first ever solo show at Coaticook’s Musée Beaulne.“1 was nervous,” admitted the St-Malo native when speaking of last Sunday’s vernissage.Over the course of the afternoon, some 100 visitors took in Duranleau’s 20 recent oil-wrought visions of the Quebec countryside, making it one of the museum’s best-attended openings so far.Like Beaulne Director Mario Landry, they were impressed with his depiction of diverse regions of the province.“People often say to me that most landscapes look the same, and certainly we’ve seen a lot of them around here,” said Landry.“But the way he paints them, there’s something special about it.” Duranleau’s brushes have covered many different areas of the Canadian east, places like Charlevoix, Coati-cook, and northwest New Brunswick.“I’m a painter of regions.I really like the regions of Quebec,” he commented.Despite his itinerant tendencies, though, he revealed a few favourite spots.“St-Malo and Coaticook are in the mountains, and I can’t forsake my mountains. They inspire me.” The show also includes town scenes, but never one to skip steps, Duranleau feels he has not yet developed the precision to do portraits or other more human subjects. His evolution will take him there soon enough, he said calmly, and is working toward it slowly at Wednesday night open studio sessions at the University of Quebec in Montreal (UQAM).Many of his studies and completed works are charcoal and ink drawings. But because he knows that such media are less appealing and accessible to the average viewer, he has de- voted the Beaulne show to his more vibrant oils—a good idea, considering what Landry and others see as his distinctive strength.“The colours in his works are magnificent,” enthused Landry. It was in working with professional painter Clarence Bourgoin that Duranleau learned plein-air painting, a practice pioneered by the Impressionists.Instead of executing sketches in nature and bringing them back to the studio to enlarge in paint, the famous French artists set up their easels on site in front of their pastoral subjects, capturing the immediacy of nature’s vibrant colours by applying strong, unmixed paints directly to the canvas.Duranleau counts Impressionists “People often say to me most landscapes look the same, and certainly we’ve seen a lot of them around here. But the way he paints them, there’s something special about it” - Musée Beaulne Director Mario Landry Corot, Renoir, Berthe Morisot, and Montreal painter Marc-Aurèle Fortin among his greatest influences.Duranleau admits that the new method of treating the great outdoors as his studio improved his work tremendously, but says it didn’t really steer his use of colour.“The colours came almost by themselves,” he contends.“Inside each of us we have colours we prefer, so you just have to work with them.I try to paint my inside.” Although he favours blue, he insists it’s neither an expression of melancholy nor a nod to Picasso. It is simply his preferred colour coming out through his own mixing style, which you can ask him about as he paints from sketches of the local area and chats with the public at the Musée Beaulne on one of several dates this summer—July 10 and 17, Aug.9-11, Aug.30 and Sept.1.It’s something he will also be doing at 12 other local symposiums and festivals this summer, before his big trip. This Sept.11, immediately after the Beaulne show ends, Duranleau will be one of 30 artists representing Quebec in a one-month gallery show in Barcelona, Spain. He is both proud and nervous, as this will be only his second time in an airplane.Never daunted, though, this is one artist who is still expanding his horizons. The Musée Beaulne in Coaticook is open from 10 a.m.to 5 p.m., Tuesday to Sunday, and has two other exhibitions, one on hats, the other on textile history, this summer. For more information, call 819-849-6560.Bonheur d’été open for business BRUCE PATTON/SPEOAL Debbie Everett holds up a piece of work as the summer-long exhibition Bonheur d'été opened at Uplands Museum Thursday.su **».Mr Cinéma 4 2 0 4, boul, Bertrand-Fabi MOVIE INFO 821-9999 ujujuj galaxycinemas com SHOWT1MES EFFECTIVE JUNE 2JST TO JUNE 27TH STAR WARS II: L'ATTAQUE DES CLONES (G) Every day: 12:30, 15:30, 18:30, 21:40 no PASSES ACCEPTED LA MEMOIRE DANS LA PEAU ( 13Y ?violence) Every day: 12:50, 15:50, 18:50,21:50 SPIDER-MAN (FV) (G)(iwn» MOM (or young cMMronj Every day: 1245, 1545, 1845,2145 SCOOBY DOO (FV) (G) Every day: 12:10, 1410, 16:10, 19:00, 21 :20 NO RUSES ACCEPTS) CHAOS (I3Y) Everyday: 12:35, 15:35, 18:35,21:35 LILO & STITCH (FV) (G) Every day 12:00, 14:00, 16:00, 19:00,21:20 RAPPORT MINORITAIRE Every day: 12:20, 15:20, 1820, 21:40 ASTERIX & OBELIX: MISSION CLÉOPÂTRE (G) Every day: 1240.1540, 1840,21:30 STAR WARS II: ATTACK OF THE CLONES (G) Every day: LA VOIX DES VENTS (I3Y ?violence) Every day except Sunday: 18.25,21:25 SUMMER SCHEDULE EVERY DAY from noon to midnight June 23rd at 8 p.m.WWE -King of the Ring | EMAIL YOUR CLASSIFIED TOUS!
