=Record= Movies Blues Aykroyd brings Goodman along for sequel Brothers 2000 misses the mark By Dominic Messier Record Correspondent Sherbrooke It took almost two decades for the musical men in black to resurface on America’s highways, but it seems this highly-anticipated sequel isn’t all it was cracked up to be.Sequels are often regarded as unwise attempts at renewed success. In Hollywood the thinking goes as follows: if it worked once, why not do it again? It has worked for films such as Star Trek and Jurassic Park, but how does it fare when following up a cult classic? Not too well.Where the original Blues Brothers film had done so well with “Saturday Night Live” fans of the early 80s, it takes a serious fan to appreciate the nostalgic value of such a plotless sequel.Granted, a few scenes are spent explaining the absence of blues brother Jake (played by John Belushi, who died of a drug overdose two years later, in 1982), and father figure Curtis (memorably portrayed by music legend Cab Calloway), yet I could not build up enough motivation, to try and understand remaining brother Elwood’s (Dan Aykroyd) reasons to tour again. The film does deliver some great moments, which include the recruiting of all the original band members, who have moved on and gotten modern jobs.Song numbers abound, and the audience is treated to performances by some of the best names in blues and rock music.Among the famous artist seen in the film B.B.King, Bo Diddley, Eric Clapton, Wilson Pickett, Aretha Franklin, James Brown, pianist Paul Shaffer, newcomer Jonny Lang, Clarence Clemons, Isaac Hayes, Lou Rawls, Travis Tritt, and Steve Winwood, to name a few.My favorite moment of the entire movie, is seeing how director John Landis successfully revived the long lost art of the police cruiser pile-up.Most will remember the famous road disaster from the first film, and so elements are brought back for a few gratuitous laughs.Despite all its musical content and marquee lineup, I’m sad to report that the film lacked content and continuity, and so the end result left me feeling empty.Let us hope Landis will leave the franchise well enough alone, and avoid a much dreaded Blues Brothers 3000.Keaton shines as brilliant criminal Cat-and-mouse thriller shows Desperate Measures By Dominic Messier Record Correspondent Sherbrooke Desperate Measures unique premise puts a positive spill on the otherwise tired genre of the police drama. The film’s title could be applied equally to the two main characters who for different reasons are desperate to improve their present circumstances.Frank Conner (Andy Garcia) is a San Francisco detective who will stop at almost nothing to help his son who will die if he does not receive a bone marrow transplant. The ever-loving father finds a match for his son in an unlikely hero.Peter McCabe (Michael Keaton), a psychotic killer, is the boy’s only hope for survival. But alas nothing in Hollywood can be as simple as bringing McCabe into the hospital, giving his bone marrow, and returning him to prison while the young boy lives happily ever after. In fact nothing goes according to plan and McCabe and Conner are once again the hunted and the hunter. The remainder of the film is quite clever, as we see how Keaton’s character goes through hell and low water, to avoid Conner and the authorities.I particularly liked director Barbet Schroad-er’s insightful camera, which shows us how methodical McCabe is, and how he goes about his difficult escape.Meanwhile, we are still concerned about the bone marrow transplant which might not be, as McCabe is on the run, and a stray bullet might kill him as well as the boy’s chances of survival. To call this film a police thriller, would be slightly off target.I would rather call this film a clever “cat-and-mouse” thriller.Keaton who is known for his comedic roles is good as an evil, yet brilliant criminal.Keaton does a lot with his role, which might otherwise have been downplayed and boring. As for Garcia, he is rehashing his numerous past cop roles, and we quickly lose interest in him.Indeed, this is a fine example of a film with a great villain, which adds plenty of spice to a passable plot.Good job.SOUTHAM Blues Brothers 2000.the original men in black return with new cohorts.Tell us about a special woman in your life The Record is once again celebrating exciting news the single Pearly White from their latest release, Fuzz, is nominated for a Juno Award for best video was worthy of a celebration at Lennoxville’s Golden Lion Pub.The group, in town for a concert, was all smiles upon receiving word that the video treatment for their single Pearly White was nominated for a Juno.Junkhouse, is a veteran Canadian band with three Sony Music recordings under their belt, Strays, Birthday Boy, and now Fuzz .Group founder Tom Wilson who does vocals and plays acoustic guitar, Grant Marshall on bass, Ray Farru-gia, on drums and percussion), Colin Cripps on guitars, keyboards and contributes to the vocals along with Dan Achen on guitar have supported Soul Asylum at Metropolis and Collective Soul at The Spectrum and are well acquainted with Quebec’s major live concert venues.“Fuzz came out in September, and so before Christmas we toured the Maritimes,” said Achen, lighting a cigarette as he sips a Crossroads Amber Ale.“Following that we launched a western swing, and now this leg in central Ontario and Quebec. We just had great concerts in Quebec City and Montreal. We love Hamilton, but playing Quebec is like going to Europe, and Junkhouse has always been very well received in Europe,” said Achen during a break in the hectic tour.“Since our second single Shine has been released every show we have played in Ontario has been sold out, and Junkhouse is getting lots of radio play.“Our second video is out for Shine and it may be getting some rotation on MusiquePlus. We had a great interview there.Shine now has medium rotation on Much and it’s hopefully going to get bumped to heavy.“ Not to be critical of the Canadian video networks , but I think we could use more video types of programs and channels because even though Much and MusiquePlus do a great job they still have a virtual monopoly on the Canadian music scene along with CMT.I think it would broaden the market to have more regional video format TV shows.” Cripps sheds his black mid-length leather jacket and joins the table.Lighting a small cigar he drinks from a pint of cranberry juice and soda while describing the making of Fuzz.“In our case Junkhouse knew that when I joined that I wanted to produce,” said Cripps. He had caught the attention of the Sony A&R team because of his production and guitar work with Crash Vegas and employed many of the same methods with Fuzz.“We set a foundation that the group felt comfortable with and then set out to create the rest of the recording in a planned way, as the results of the sessions came in that told us whether we were heading in the right artistic direction.Junkhouse fans should see a real artistic progression with Fuzz.” Junkhouse is group founder Tom Wilson, vocals and acoustic guitar, Grant Marshall, bass, Ray Farrugia, drums and percussion, Colin Cripps, guitars, keyboards and contributes to the vocals, and Dan Achen, guitar.Musique Chez Nous Music Department • Bishop’s University GAIA CONCERT Bishop's music majors elease Boot leg musicians are music majors who met at Bishop's University and developed the sound they call ‘groove rock’.COURTESY BOOTLEG By Richard McCallum Record Correspondent Lennoxville With a university filled with music lovers at its center, Lennoxville has long been known as an incubator for aspiring musicians and a nursery for new talent.Unlike larger urban areas, Lennoxville encourages the development of new music by giving upcoming bands a chance to perform. It is here, at Bishop’s University in 1995, that the young groove collective known as Bootleg began its musical journey.Bootleg is composed of Bishop’s University music majors Chris “Slim” Cook (bass, vocals), Chris Driedzig (drums, percussion, vocals), Alistair Heath (lead guitar, vocals) and Bryan Reid (lead vocals, rhythm guitar). They call their concoction of reggae/funk/jazz/blues/rock “groove rock”.They cut their musical teeth supporting major label acts such as The Monoxides and Weeping Tile and have appeared in concert with Bishop’s band Clay at Toronto’s showcase venue Lee’s Palace. Before soundcheck for a show at the Golden Lion Pub in Lennoxville, Cook spoke with The Record about their new, self-titled CD and their sound.“We call our music ‘groove rock’ because while it is rock-based, it is also very upbeat. One thing the folks who come to our show know is that when they see us we like to see everybody dancing,” Cook said as he lit a cigarette and thoughtfully pondered the cascading head of foam circling his frothing pint of stout ale.“Our music is completely upbeat rock and roll." Two years ago, the quartet released a cassette which received favorable responses from listeners.“Since then we have changed singers, so we feel that the new CD better represents what Bootleg is all about,” Cook said. The band’s faithful road manager, Clarkie, politely interrupted the interview to ask ‘Slim’ to autograph a CD for a local radio station promotion and update him on how soundcheck was progressing. As soundcheck continued, Cook said there was a demand for a new Bootleg release.“We recorded it in the Townships at Audiobec recording studios in Ascot. Our producer/engineer was Doug Clements. He was one of the top 10 mixing engineers in Toronto for live venues,” said Cook.“Doug has worked with many acts, but I think it was his work with blues legend Buddy Guy that probably most impressed us.Brian writes most of the lyrics, but the rest of the group are multi-instrumentalists so our music is often a collective effort.” With a new CD hitting the streets.Bootleg has actively begun the marketing arm of their operation.“We have already mailed out a few to a couple of the major record companies,” said Cook.“We have sent copies to Capitol-EMI in Toronto and Sonic Onyun in Hamilton.” It’s only a matter of time before a major jumps on the Bootleg bandwagon. Those on-line will soon be able to visit Bootleg at www.bootleg.ca., their web site which should soon be up and running. The CD is available at music shops in Sherbrooke. page 6 February 20-26, 1998 Townshipsw eek Country Country artists featured in two books Twain and Tillis forge country stardom Country Connection Jessie Au LIS The road to super-stardom is rarely paved and no where is that more true than in the country music business.Country singers often tell their stories through songs with lyrics which tell tales of heartache, lost loves and broken dreams.Books are another outlet country crooners are using to tell the stories and moments of their lives. This week we’ll look at two artists, who have overcome different odds to make it in Nashville and beyond. The first book is about Pam Tillis who had to step out from behind her father, Mel Tillis’, footsteps to make it as a country singer.Canadian singing sensation Shania Twain fought poverty and geography to move to the forefront of not only the country but also the pop charts. In particular, Twain had to put her dream of stardom on hold at the age of 20 to take care of her brothers and sister in Timmins, Ont., following the death of her parents in a tragic car accident. In both hooks you’ll find many details that you probably didn’t know and different anecdotes on both artists.More reason to realize that they fully deserve their status as acclaimed country music artist.SHANIA TWAIN: ON MY WAY, by Dallas Williams (ECW Press) Despite all the things that have been written about Shania Twain it seems like there was plenty more to add. After all, this successful singer is our most prestigious Canadian country music representative. Most of us have heard her rags-to-riches story following the release of her breakthrough second album, The Woman In Me, which has become the best-selling ever by a female country Feaiuriog Lyndon Sheldon .Country Music Dance Band $ FOR ALL OCCASIONS Call: (819) 876-1020 ?* * * artist.Shania Twain: On My Way is packed with anecdotes and insightful glimpses and really takes a look at the early forces in her life that still drive her today. Her decision to take charge of her siblings after the tragic accident that killed both her parents tells much of this woman’s character. The book examines her qualities such as her loyalty to her family, her love of nature. It also delves into the poverty and hunger she suffered through and how she developed a private side.Twain has always been independent and strong which became more evident when she was working in the forest with her father and struggling to become a singer.Twain’s road to stardom has by-now become household knowledge. The sexy brunette has broken all of Nashville’s rules establishing new sales record. Her new style of marketing brought different expectations to country performers so the significance of her sound and approach becomes relevant of her success.Written by Dallas Williams, a Toronto freelance writer, this biography examines how the new star deals with the stress of stardom.Another unique part of her success is her lack of touring. Most performers need to tour to sell records but Twain her smashed records even without touring and rarely performing live. The book does not include many pictures of her early years and that might come as a disappointment to many fans but when it comes to recent glamour shots, they will be delighted. One thing the book doesn’t cover well, is Twain’s relationship with her husband, producer Robert “Mutt” Lange. This is something fans would have loved since Mutt is really the big man behind the young woman’s career. The book is very interesting just the same and after all it is Shania’s biography.PAM TILLIS: OUT OF HER FATHER’S SHADOW by Ace Collins (St.Martin’s Pa- MERCURY Shania Twain: On My Way is packed with anecdotes confined to previous articles so Collins had to make some stretches in order to complete the book.He assesses the way in which the country music industry has always treated women singer as second-class performer, and how Pam Tillis changed that by producing her own album. There will be other books as this one is only an introduction in the life and time of Pam Tillis but it is still an interesting and satisfying book to read.Pam Tillis is one of the most distinctive performers given to country music.Maybe one day, she’ll decide to tell it all in her own words and with her spunk it fan can tell you it has been a long, painful 31- year drought ever since - and this year’s team is not a serious contender.Meanwhile, the Canadiens have enjoyed several winning seasons during the past three decades. This year, they are challenging for the top spot in the Eastern Conference.Games between the Maple Leafs and Canadiens are few and far between because the two teams are in different conferences; this is only the second and last time they meet this season. But when the Maple Leafs move to the Eastern Conference next year, the rivalry will heat up again. This season, the Maple Leafs are a disappointing team that relies on one player: all-star centre Mats Sundin. The Canadiens have a bright, young coach in Alain Vigneault and a group of dedicated, unsung heroes on the ice.Still, sparks fly every time the Maple Leafs and Canadiens meet, and Saturday’s game should be no exception. The Canadiens were victorious in the previous meeting between the teams earlier this season in Montreal. The second game of the doubleheader telecast is another all-Canadian match up.The Ottawa Senators travel to Vancouver to play the Canucks at General Motors Place.• TSN’s NHL coverage also resumes with an “Original Six” match up: The New York Rangers visit Toronto on Thursday, Feb.26.The Rangers and the Maple Leafs are among several teams scrambling to make the playoffs. With seven weeks remaining in the regular season, they will have to move fast.• One order of business remains at the Winter Olympics: the closing ceremonies.CBC has full coverage Sunday, Feb.22.Brian Williams, Ron MacLean and Terry Leibel are the hosts. The network also plans to rebroadcast the gold-medal game in men’s hockey Sunday, March 1, as well as the figure skating exhibition live from the Nagano arena later that evening.TVDATA Ron MacLean will co-host the closing ceremonies of the 18th Winter Olympic Games.Sports on the Smalll Screen Ted Shaw page 8 February 20-26, 1998 Townships'*w e e k Show Patrick Bernhardt plays Le Vieux Clocher Feb.28 It’s a return to the old for this new age artist By Jessie Aulis Record Correspondent Magog Ancient scriptures find new importance and relevance in the music of Patrick Bernhardt. He takes his inspiration from his many trips to India. From there he brought all the wisdom of the ancient and the scripts left to civilization as one precious heritage. His latest album, Mantra Mandala, is the seventh in a collection that is classi- fied as new age but touches many musical genres.“Universal peace, love of the human soul and luminous light is the message that I intend people to find in my music.A message of hope and love for a world where it’s not always easy to live because of all the hatred, social or cultural.1 want it to project love and positive energy” said the Belgium native at Le Vieux Clocher in Magog.Patrick Bernhardt will be performing and promoting his new album at Le Vieux Clocher on Saturday, Feb.28.Born in Algers in 1952 to French parents, Bernhardt lived in France, the Netherlands and England before immigrating in Canada in 1981.Actually it is Quebec musicians he met there who encouraged him to come to Montreal.Today after many trips to India his name and his music are internationally known and his albums regarded as therapy by many people.Bernhardt says, those who enjoy his music are those who care about their inner well being.Bernhardt has no intention of changing the world, he’s not some kind of visionary with ideas to revolutionized things. He is a simple and charming musician who came to understand that some types of music are food for the soul which married to meditation can possibly ease the pain of being over stressed. He finds fulfillment in what he is doing musically and hopes he will be able to bring and appreciation comes with listening.Don’t expect to find his work on the top of any radio charts because the format used in radio stations do not allow any air time for this musical genre.Despite a lack of air-play, album sales are very good and it is all done by word-of-mouth.A previous album, Atlantis An-gelis reached gold status after selling 50,000 units in Canada.“I am the composer, the arranger, the producer of this music but I do not write any lyrics, instead I use very old scriptures called Sanskrit,” explained Bernhardt about this new album.“Sanskrit is actually a very old way of expression which finds its origin in many different languages, especially in places such as India, Tibet, Japan, Nepal, just to name a few.” The roots for the word Mantra are Mana which means mind and Tatra meaning liberation which you could translate by liberation of the mental or intellect.“A Mantra is the resonance of a sound which has the power to touch our inner-self and the Mantras have a definite influence on people’s attitude and behavior in within the society.Of course this will bring a more positive influence on people than the latest hits found on the charts.” Mantra Mandala features Indian Tampuras, Middle-East Citharas, Japanese Gongs, Nepalese Cymbals, acoustic guitars and Bernhardt’s captivating voice. For those who are intrigued by this album here’s the translation of one of the included number: “Om Mani Padmeltum - New Millenium” “Om Mani Padmeltum, Om Mani Padmeltum, He Caitanya Nitai, He Caitanya Nitai” “O supreme consciousness, O Caitanya Nitai, please open, Open the Lotus of my heart.” Bernhardt said in order to find peace of mind and serenity people have a tendency to go out and listen to loud music in a night club. They think that it makes them forget their problems leaving them with inner emptiness.“This is far from being the ideal solution to achieve serenity. On the opposite you need to bring everything together, sort it out through meditation. You have to open your heart. If it’s wide open, you’ll have a better understanding of what’s happening even though life is not always good to us you will slowly find this inner peaceful feeling” said Bernhardt.Indeed everyone knows that a healthy body is the result of having a healthy mind and that a negative attitude can cause many physical problems.Bernhardt’s music in this case is used as the element which will help to bring the inner silence needed to meditate. The musician insists that it has nothing to do with religion but rather spirituality.“My music act as a medicine proper to meditation to make people realize that they are a lot more than just a social security number agitated between their cradle and their hearse” explained Bernhardt.“There’s a lot of energy force that can be felt from a Sanskrit mantra" said Bernhardt.“It’s not rare that people attending my shows end up crying tears of joy because they experience the liberation of their mind and soul some of them end up dancing to the beat of the music. This music is also very much in accordance with yoga” explained Bernhardt. All of this might sound a little mystic but if you think about it carefully it's just plain good old common sense.
