TALK OF THE Portes et Fenêtres rr\ i nr, t • lownsnips Warranty - 30 years Marcel Brassard (819)820-7299 _______ îlSWjJMnjton^aj^Shjrbrooju» 3 Record The Weekly Guide to Arts & Entertainment in the Eastern Townships August 30-September 5, 2002 Artist carves a niche for himself By Murieile Parkes Record Correspondent Sutton Junction Wood carver Daniel Haché gives new life to dead trees. His medium: a chainsaw. His studio: the wide outdoors under a blue tarpaulin adjacent to a barn-like dwelling in Sutton Junction.Ten years ago, the chainsaw artist began transforming old telephone poles into totem poles.Today, his projects vary from animal replicas and other home and garden art to tables and chairs, which are as fanciful as they are functional. His work is influenced by Mayan and South American design.A playful table with a distinctly Walt Disney flavour was recently in progress. The fluted top with wings resembled a flying mushroom; the base — a massive hollowed-out pine log — approximated a giant birdhouse.Commissioned by a day-care in Cowansville, the piece is guaranteed to delight curious youngsters, if not an imaginary hobbit or two.The 27-year-old artist is self taught. After graduating from École Massey-Vanier, he took a one-year art course (arts plastiques) at CEGEP du Vieux Montréal.He figures everything he learned about wood, however, he learned himself.Born in Cowansville, but raised in Shefford, Haché spent three years in B.C, where he saw “lots of chain-saw carvings, but not a lot of carvers.” He did, however, learn about tools and got himself a carving bar (special add-on used by chainsaw artists to help reduce kickback). At first, when he thought about wood carving, it was ‘natural to think chisel,” he said.See Chainsaw, Page 15 MUKIELLE PARXES/CORJŒSPONDENT 5'.» jgT.t ' • ?me i Ten years ago, chainsaw artist Daniel Hache' began transforming old telephone poles into totem poles.Today, his projects vary from animal replicas to home and garden art.Look What’s Insidi DAVID ANDERSON/PHOTO CORRESPONDENT Patrons have long been visiting Diane Beausolei’s Au Vieux Tilleul in Knowlton.storylandl presents its first major production of the season with Letters Home.Canadian singer/song-writer Mae Moore says she feel more confident on her new album.Rod Beattie is back with the one-man production of Wingfield on Ice at The Piggery.Sports writer Frank Deford is just getting started in his colourful autobiography.CARREFOUR DE L'ESTRIE CARREFOUR de L'ESTRIE Yoim sure to find everything* «t tfie Carrefour! SUPER REGIONAL SHOPPING CENTRE: 3050 Portland Blvd., Sherbrooke - 563-1907 For a classy \ TALK OF THE Townships page 2 August 30-September 5, 2002 dining out Record Let your taste buds do the walking - fine dining is a Townships tradition Au Vieux Tilleul a quiet neighbourhood eatery By Sunil Mahtani Special to the Record Knowlton Two months ago, Diane Beausoleil and chef Laurier Matte, owners of the Halte au Soleil resto-café in Knowlton, expanded their business. For the past four years, patrons visited the old stone building on Lakeside Road for its panini and ciabata sandwiches, homemade pâtés and quiches, as well as a selection of Van Houtte coffees. Now the former Ontario French teacher and her partner have added an enclosed dining room reminiscent of a greenhouse and serve nightly table d’hôte dinners.Named Au Vieux Tilleul after the century-old linden tree behind the restaurant, the intimate space is at the rear of the building, away from any traffic sounds that may suddenly spring up on Lakeside. The dining room seats 40, and is an unassuming little neighbourhood eatery with burgundy and white tablecloths, candles on each table and a standing heater that will come in handy during the cool fall days ahead.Music is noticeably absent here, which Beausoleil tells me and my companion is at the request of her customers who seem to prefer peace and quiet with their meals. As we look over the modest menu, we are treated to a plate of crudités and dip, a nice change from the usual bread selections. The table d’hôte dinners, which include a starter, main dish and dessert, but no coffee or tea, begin with a choice of soup of the day — vegetable; banquise de fruits de mer—a cold seafood salad, which includes pollack, and garlic escargots.Au Vieux Tilleul 79 Lakeside, Knowlton Hours: Seven days a week, 5 to 10 p.m.Reservations: Preferred.Smoking: Section in dining room.Licensed: Yes Credit and debit cards: Accepted.Tel: 450-243-1110.The main dishes were fettuccini Alfredo with Caesar salad ($9.95); lasagna with ricotta cheese and spinach, also served with a Caesar ($11.95); Brome Lake duck leg with a sweet and sour sauce, served with vegetables and a choice of house or mashed potatoes, or jasmine-scented rice ($15.95); 12 oz.pepper steak ($15.95) or 12 oz.New York sirloin ($17.95), both with the same side orders as the duck.A hot, round loaf of bread was then served on a cutting board. It was very good, however a section of it was cold, giving away the fact that it was frozen at one point. The vegetable soup was generous in size and served very hot, with lots of tiny vegetables in a tomato-based broth. The escargots were fine, served in hot garlic butter. The duck leg was very tender with the meat falling off the bone rather easily. It was served in a subtle sweet and sour sauce that complimented the meat. The generous sides included a skewer of cherry tomatoes, red pepper and onion pieces, jasmine-scented white ri?e, rounds of cucumber and salad greens. The dressing which came on the m Jig ; jsaiem w.ue uemier oes oetucnesne res) Here Labreche.Cinéma “L'Ef Schwarzeneo taceur" (1996, dispensa) Arnold aer.James Carat.(SO Le Grand Journal (:15) Sex-shoo |(:45) Cinéma ”UsP8a»as ide l'amour” (1999) raiüM Postgame Just Shoot Me (CC) Pretender “Jarokto!” A (CO Andromeda “Fair Unknown" A (CO Seinfeld a Seinfeld a (CO (CO mnm Cops “Palm Beach” America’s Most Wanted: America Fiahts Back News 3rd Rock-Sun Mad TV A (CC) WWE Bottom Une mu'A Victory Garden Smart Travels Evening at Pops a (CC) Lawrence Welk Show Well-known theme sonos. As Time Keeping Up Goes Bv SS1"9 Next of Kin Father Ted a*»" Austin City Units A [Moste “Suspicion” (1941, Suspense) Care Grant Joan Fontaine.ITH'i* Passport to Adventure Experience America a Business Scully/The Schl World A BBC World Editors News Wall Street- McLaughlin Fortune Group Evening at Pops A (CC) Bernadette Peters in Concert A (CC) (:25) George Absolutely U Benson: !(:45) BBC ve A (CCI World News Mystery: tvnlev frra Law & Order “Performance" n (CCI Law & Order “Deceit” A (CO Law «Order “Family Values" a (CO Law «Order “We Uke Mike” A (CC) Mansions, Monuments « Masteroieces (CC) Cdumbo A wealthy psychiatrist murders the husband of his mistress.Columbo “Short Fuse” (CC) Mansions, Monuments MTA'M M.4nt Ua.U W'VV; MÇHrM: CM” (19921 "Once Upon a Lost Art Regained StarTV (CC) Arts & Minds Liszt Sonata |:1^0pening Night “Louis Punch Me in the Stomach A George's Best Stuff Outspoken comic George Carlin.Sexsndthe 045) Citv (CC) Bravonews Real Sex in the Citv ram Moneyline Weekend Pinnacle (CO CNN Saturday Novak, Hunt & Shields CNN Saturday Reliable Sources Capital Gang CNN Presents “16 Acres” Larry King Weekend CNN Saturday Night Capital Gang Larry King Weekend Canadian Geographic (CC) Battlebots (CO High Tech Toys (CO Forbidden Pli “Wildfire" (C( ices A Storm Warning! Haché also fashions monuments and special signs. His specialty is carving dead or damaged trees which are still standing.Clients refer to Haché’s portfolio for themes and prices (a totem pole, for example, can cost anywhere from $1,000 to $5,000).Once an agreement is reached.Haché is ready to proceed.“From there I can imagine a project,” he said, adding he never knows ahead what he’ll end up with.“I make them up as I go along.” Haché added that a project can take anywhere from one week to the whole summer. He said he works with all kinds of wood, but pine is his favourite. He said it’s soft, easy to handle and comes in large diameters. He also likes to experiment.Recently, he tried apple wood.“It’s very dark and a nice colour. It’s a different approach - so hard it’s almost like rock, but I like the effect,” he said, adding he usually obtains his wood gratis.“It’s left over, like when people cut down a tree for lumber.I’m driving and I notice a tree on the road, and I knock on the door.” UPCOMING events: • Sept.1 to 7, at Parc du Domaine-Howard, Sherbrooke, Haché will be one of three chainsaw artists.Haché will carve a majestic red maple, damaged in the 1998 ice storm. Each carver has his own tree to depict the project’s theme, ‘Les peuples fondateurs: (the country’s founders). The public can follow the tree’s evolution, as well as attend the vernissage on the final day.For information: e-mail jardinsculpture@hotmail.com.• Each weekend from Sept.21 to OcL 14, artists invite the public into their workshops during La Tournée du 20.Haché’s carvings are for sale. For more information, call 450-298-5630/295-2621/1-888-811-1928, or visit the T20 Web site at www.art-t20.qc.ca.• Haché is also a storyteller, singer and musician. On Sept 27, he plays the didgeridoo — an Aboriginal wind instrument — and harmonica, as well as recount stories at an underground performance at the Capelton Mines. For more information, call 819-346-9545, or visit wwwjninescapelton.com.• On Nov.30, Haché combines his musical and artistic talents at a concert/ vernissage in the art gallery of École Massey-Vanier.For more information, call 450-538-0543.MURIELLE PARKES/CORRESPONDENT T Haché’s cousins Alemayhu Daniel, 11, and David Haberl, 10 were recently visiting the Sutton Suction artist from Ottawa.
