RECORD The voice of the Eastern Townships since 1897 Granby poaching bust.See Page 3 75 CENTS + TAXES PM#0040007682 Thursday, December 7, 2006 perky beaton Marg Logan-White makes an AIDS Angel in a church basement Crafty grannies AIDS Angels are made with cork By Rita Legault Sherbrooke The basement of Unitarian Uni versalist Church in North Hatley is a beehive of activity as almost a dozen grannies are busy fighting AIDS in Africa by doing what many of them do best — crafting.Four weeks ago the grannies began making AIDS Angels, Christmas ornaments sold to raise money for the Stephen lewis Foundation's Grandmothers to Grandmothers campaign."We'w made 400 of them so far," said Heather Keith, noting that the grandmothers can’t keep up with the demand.They were also having a hard time at the supply end.“This happened so quick ly we really couldn't get all the supplies," Keith said, noting they had to improvise for the wooden doll heads “Unfortunately the ones we found only came in white so we had to paint them black." Corks are glued together to form the doll's body with a homemade press one of the husbands made for them In the church basement an assembly line has been set up Some women are painting the heads and faces of the dolls and as the figurines mow down the as sembly line there is a box of hair, a Ixix ol dresses and a Ixix of wings “It's a real production line," Keith said Each AIDS angel is also baptized with an African name handwritten on a name lag.The label also describes the Grandmothers to Gmndmot hers campaign.The Townships grannies are members of the Canadian Federation of t imversity Women Sherbrooke District.They’ve a I ready sent a cheque for $ 1.4(H) Pi i am si » Grannies on Pace 4 Patient services fine, says CHUS By Brion Robinson Sherbrooke The University of Sherbrooke's decision to pull 108 tiled students out of the Centre hospitalier universitaire de Sherbrrxike has had no affect on patient service, says France Champagne, media relations advisor for the hospital “The impact of their absence has been very minimal."
