il t NEW Wednesday, June 14, 2000 450-242-2544 Specialized General Contractor Excavation, hydraulic rock breaker, demolition, foundation, septic system, drainage, artificial ponds all sizes, public and private roads, landshaping, aggregate, top soil, field stone, bulk transport.The Largest Circulation Weekly in Brome—Missisquoi Kudos For Kids CAROLINE KEHNE/CORRES PONDENT Massey-Vanier High School held its annual Awards Reception last Thursday night to recognize the academic accomplishments of its soon-to-be graduating class of 2000.Members of Cowansville’s Royal Canadian Legion Branch #99 were on hand to award Diana Royea (centre) with their annual branch award.Royea was one of 80 recipients who received awards ranging from $200 to $1200 in recognition of various aspects of academic excellence.Event coordinator Linda Persons reported that a total of $38,000 in awards donated by parents, businesses, clubs and other non-profit organizations was distributed this year.Liberal MP Denis Paradis presented Adam Hooper with the evening’s top award, the Governor-General’s Bronze Medal for Highest Academic $tanding.A complete listing of awards and recipients will be published in an upcoming issue of the Brome County News.- Caroline Kehne, Record Correspondent.Churches to hold an old-fashioned revival By Caroline Kehne Record Correspondent Knowlton Five area churches will be collaborating on a joint event to be held by Knowlton’s Mill Pond on June 15,16 and 17.‘Come and See’, sponsored by St.Paul’s Anglican Church of Knowlton, the Creek United Church of Foster, the Knowlton United Church, St-Edouard’s Roman Catholic Church of Knowlton, the Bethel Pentecostal Church of South Bolton and the Baptist Congregations of Sutton and Mansonville, will feature music and talks on the subject of faith.Reverend Ralph Leavitt of St.Paul’s Church said that the inspiration for the mission was a visit to last year’s Cowansville tent revival held by Upstream Ministries, who traveled across Canada promoting spiritual unity.“I saw many of my congre gation there and realized there was a hunger for some thing like this,” said Rev.Leavitt.Guest speakers will be the Reverend Dr.Michael Pout-ney and his wife Elaine.Rev.Poutney, a native of Edin- burgh Scotland, graduated with distinction as a teacher of Divinity from the College of St.Mark and St.John in Chelsea.Organizer Craig Quinn compares the event to “an old-fashion revival”, noting that something of this type has not been seen in Knowlton since the 1950s.“This is a time when churches are separated more by how we go about our worship rather than by what we believe,” said Quinn.Organizers will be setting up a tent capable of accommodating 200 worshipers next to the scenic Mill Pond.Activities will be start on Thursday at 7 pm with “Jesus at a Distance”, Friday at 7 pm with “Doubts and Fears”, Saturday at 10 am with “A Growing Attraction” and 7 pm with “Faith and Acceptance”.Rev.Leavitt added that St.Paul’s organist Evie Johnston-Main is putting together a worship team who will lead 40 minutes of singing hymns at each session.The public is invited to participate in this community event.For additional information, contact Craig Quinn at (450) 243-3650.‘Baby-friendly’ hospital receives Prix Materna 2000 award Staff The Brome-Missisquoi Perkins Hospital has racked up yet another award for its baby-friendly approach to health care.Last Thursday, the BMP was awarded the Prix Materna 2000 by the Association pour la Santé Publique du Québec.The award is in recognition of the hospital’s program which promotes breast feeding.Since 1995 the Cowansville hospital has concentrated its efforts on supporting parents and infants, with an emphasis on breast feeding.Services were reorganized around getting new moth- ers to breast feed their infants, and in developing a closer bond between parents and their children.About 80 per cent of new mothers breast feed when they leave the maternity ward of the BMP.Last July the BMP was designated a “Baby Friendly Hospital” by the World Health Organization, the only hospital in Canada to receive this distinction.The Prix Materna is awarded to projects which contribute to improving services and a better understanding of the needs of parents.The prize also aims to publicize those efforts and raise public awareness of the importance of pre and post natal care.Pierre Marziali Pharmacist Honrs: Mon., Tues., Wed.9 -
