After a successful run at Place des Arts last year, the “drumless percussion group” Stomp is back to wow viewers with more astonishing rhythmic feats played on any worldly item that isn’t nailed down. This year’s show had generally the same layout as last year.It started with one man sweeping the stage. Then, slowly, others joined in, tapping their brooms at different times, each complimenting the other. After a few minutes the eight members of Stomp had created an incredible beat with their brooms that filled the entire auditorium. They then proceeded to display their skills with such “instruments” as zippo lighters, plastic bags and trash cans.My favorite section of the show was the “kitchen sink trio”.Three men strapped sinks full of water and dishes to themselves and managed to drum out a fantastic song. They were able to create some very unique sounds by filling pots with different amounts of water to produce different notes. They even pulled the plug and used the sound of the water pouring into a bucket as a drum roll. There wasn’t a dull moment during the show. The beats became more and more complicated at each interval, and the intensity of the show grew steadily till the very end.One change in this years show that proved almost more entertaining than the percussion, was the interaction between the members of Stomp and the audience.Rather than simply playing music and offering the occasional glance into the audience, this year’s Stomp engages the viewer and demands constant attention. It is as though each person on the stage considers themselves to be the leader of the group, and every moment is a battle to win the audience over. While I assume every viewer had their favorite performer, what impressed me most was the group effort.I would recommend Stomp to anyone looking for a truly energizing experience. The show was a fantastic spectacle of lights, music, humor and attitude.I guarantee that anyone who sees this show will never look at a paper bag or a broom stick the same way again.Stomp will be playing from May 19 to May 31 at St-Denis Theatre in Montreal.Ticket prices range from $22.50 to $44.50, depending on the time. For more information, call 790-1111.talents of Anita Hayes who in 1997 was honored with the Best Supporting Actress award at the International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival in Philadelphia. There are two performances on May 23 at 2:30 p.m.and 8 p.m.at the Haskell Opera House, Tickets are available by calling the Opera House at 819-876-2020.Cost: $14 for adults and $10 for children under 12 in Canadian funds and $10 and $7 in U.S.funds.Gilbert& Sullivan at Haskell Staff A little bit of Montreal is coming to Stanstead this weekend. The Montreal West Operatic Society is per-forming Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Gondeliers at the Haskell Opera House. The May 23 performance of The Gondeliers is the Operatic Society’s last of the season, after shows at the Royal Vale Theatre in Montreal and at Theatre Lac Brome in Knowlton. The Gondeliers is Gilbert & Sullivan’s third-last work, penned in 1889, and is a comedy about republicanism and social snobbery. The play takes place in 1750 Venice with two gondeliers finding brides while blindfolded. The audience later learns that one of the gondeliers is actually a King and in infancy had been betrothed to another aristocrat. The play takes off from there. As in all G&S productions music is prominently featured. For example in Act 1 the first 20 minutes are without dialogue. For this production, the Montreal West Operatic Society features the COURTESY OF STOMP Record MANUFACTURER’S WAREHOUSE SALE SgrooÂil OPEN ON NEW STOCK HAS ARRIVED! In Love And War was the real watershed for Bullock.“I found myself saying: 1 want to produce.I want to be in a position where I can stand behind my director and be able to say, make this movie the way you think it should be made.” In Bullock’s world, failure and adversity are part of life’s testing. She says three events - all tragic - changed her forever.“1 don’t really want to talk about them - but everything is for a rea- son - tragedy makes you whole. How can you protect anyone from tragedy? You can’t.But 1 came out the other end OK.I’m still here.” It’s a matter of achieving emotional resilience, she says.“I now have nothing to lose.I have absolutely nothing to fear.” All this explains why Bullock relates so strongly to Hope Floats and the character of Birdee Pruit, the former local beauty queen whose perfect life crashes down around her.Birdee finds herself back in her home town with her sullen daughter (Mae Whitman), again living with the mother (Gena Rowlands) she never really knew, and plunging into depression and self-pity.“Birdee has built her life on this foundation and she thinks so highly of herself. It was such a false foundation -putting so much importance on popularity and marrying the right guy and having the right number of children and having the right lifestyle and getting out of that town to show that you’re better than anyone else.“Then, wham! Everything you’ve built this person on turns out to be not you. It’s something very superficial, and although it’s sad when it all falls apart, you now have to deal with life.” Bullock sees Birdee as someone who has never been honest about herself and never had to face up to reality. If she is to be saved, it will be because of the honesty of those about her - her mother, her daughter, her aspiring new boyfriend (Harry Connickjr.) - and through being tested by tragedy.“The only person who’s dishonest is my character. My daughter’s brutally honest, my mother’s brutally honest, Harry’s character is brutally honest.Everyone knows who they are because they’ve gone through enough crap and come out the other end.You need to have heartache, you need to have tragedy, to find out who you are.If you’ve been protected you're entire life, l t VY'AQ'Z 'I Tlm \ > For all your travel needs • Individual travel • Group travel (short & long stays) • Business travel • Cruises • Travel insurance email: can be in the face of tragedy.” Bullock’s character takes terrible knocks in the film.Bullock herself has taken some terrible knocks in the business of filmmaking, and she knows she faces tough odds with Hope Floats - “a nice little film” arriving in the midst of such summer juggernauts as Godzilla and The Truman Show. But she’ll stand tall no matter how the film does. And nothing can take away the actual experience of making the film and being a producer for the first time.Still, she does have one confession: contrary to what people think, she’s not always all sweetness.“I have my bad days.I can be a bitch.I can be hard, because if you’re producing you learn to say no, and I have learned to say no.But that doesn’t mean people like you less - which had been my fear.” Ciném ¦a ck Forest • 9 Mystery man Grey Owl found peace in nature PERRY BEATON/CORRF.S PONDENT Beavers take a swim break on the set.By Richard McCallum Record Correspondent His adoptive tribe, The Ojibwa Nation called him “Wa -Sha-Quon-Asia” or He Who Flies By Night, but the world regaled him as Grey Owl.He first appeared around the heavy wilderness of North Bay Ont in 1906 as an 18-year-old who earned his living as a trapper and hunter - in actual fact he was a natural woodsman.Even then many in the region thought him to be a Métis Indian, and he was rumored to be the blueeyed son of an Apache mother and Scottish dad.For many years he lived with his first wife, the Ojibwa woman Angèle, until the outbreak of World War I.He enlisted in the Canadian forces and was a bona fide Canadian war hero.As a sniper he was an extremely valuable asset to the Canadian war effort, but the experience sickened him, and upon his discharge, Grey Owl became disenchanted with the material waste of the modern world. As he fled civilization, the naturalist began to know peace again.Taking as his second wife the Iroquois woman Anahareo the two lovers lived deep in the wilderness apart from any tribe. In the winter of 1928-29 Grey Owl came across a mother beaver caught in a spring loaded trap.As he witnessed the tortured animal die a cruel and senseless death, the killer of men and beasts vowed never to take another life.He gathered up the baby beaver kits and reared them.Convinced by Anahareo to tell the world of the plight of the beaver, Grey Owl wrote a book on his life in the wilds which became wildly popular.Outfitted in a buckskin tunic and feather headdress, with stonelike facial features and a stern countenance, Grey Owl toured the world delivering lectures on conservation with a staccato speech pattern.Objectified as the epitome of a noble and brave savage, his fame reached true superstar status during the 30s.During one of his tours his enduring fame reached the King and Queen Of England. On the first anniversary of the abdication of Edward VIII, Grey Owl addressed King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (the current Queen Mother) and the princesses Elizabeth ( now Queen Elizabeth) and Margaret Rose.In 1938, at age 50 he died of pneumonia.A day after his death, a fellow naturalist revealed that Grey Owl was in fact Englishman Archie Belaney from Hastings, England. The young Archie Belaney was raised by his aunts in Hastings. At 18, he convinced them to allow him to move to Toronto so that he could pursue his interests in farming. But as soon as he reached Canada he made his way into the northern wilderness.Upon his death, Grey Owl was vilified by the press for being a fraud.Others believe being an Indian is not about blood - it’s about spirit, and Grey Owl had lots of that.POMERLEAU I GAZ PROPANE THE IDUSTRY’S HOTTEST TECHNOLOGY , ¦ I 2 v ' ' n taxe stalliüon in i Ë /MONTH* tax inch overflow & toilet seat ind.•Based on 12 months, taxes included.Upon credit BEATON/CORRESPONDENT Pierce Brosnan gets handling tips from an animal trainer on set.By Richard McCallum Record Correspondent Lake Massawippi It’s a perfect spring day.The warm early afternoon sun shines brightly on the quiet lakefront that is the nature sanctuary of Grey Owl.On the handhewn log porch of the rustic cabin, a strikingly beautiful Iroquois woman checks the budding teeth of a baby beaver.A moody Grey Owl silently passes her, but as he opens the cabin door to enter, he almost trips over the young kit.“Cut.We’re going to need another take on that please,” says Lord Richard Attenborough, one of the industry’s more respected movie directors, with a hearty laugh.“I just want to say on the record that I did not in any way harm or molest the young beaver!” responds actor Pierce Brosnan, better known as Naval Commander James Bond, secret agent 007 of Her Majesty’s Secret Service. The affable superstar has broken the tension on the set with this in jest and the cast and crew crack up into a gale of laughter as they set up to reshoot the scene. From a ramshackled wooden bridge across the creek from the movie set, executive producer Jake Eberts smiles wryly at Brosnan’s reference to the cruelty to animals inflicted by filmmakers which is well documented in Kenneth PERRY BEATON/CORRESPONDENT :: i; m Hollywood producer, Townships resident, and animal lover Jake Eberts.Anger’s Hollywood Babylon. The scene is re-shot quickly; when a Panavision camera rolls, the cost is over $1,000 a minute, and the assistant director calls for a lunch break. We are outside the picturesque village of North Hatley on the closed set of Grey Owl, a major motion picture starring Pierce Brosnan as the Ojibwa naturalist and one of the founding fathers of the conservationist movement in the 1930s.The Canadian connection is Montreal-born producer Jake Eberts.Eberts was the founder and chief executive of Goldcrest Films (Chariots Of Fire,The Mission, The Killing Fields) and is a part time resident of the Eastern Townships. He has again teamed up with Lord Attenborough for the first time since their Oscar Award winning epic Gandhi.Principal photography on the $30 million film started April 14 and the movie is currently midway through its 10-week shoot in Quebec.A largely Canadian crew of over 150 is on a whirlwind tour of the province, with locations reaching from the Laurentian Shield to the Eastern Townships, with Montreal as it’s main base. The film then moves to Hastings, England for a three day shoot in mid June.Post production will be completed in the United Kingdom hopefully in time for a springtime cinema release in 1999.The script is an original screenplay by screenwriter William Nicholson (Shadowlands, First Knight, Nell) which tells the dramatic true story of Grey Owl and his young wife Anahareo, who was as famous in his lifetime as Rudyard Kipling and Lawrence Of Arabia. An enigmatic figure, Grey Owl was one of the first modern conservationists who alerted society in the ‘30s to the squandering of Cana- da’s natural resources.Upon his death, Grey Owl was revealed to have been Englishman Archie Belaney from Hastings, England, and later North Bay, Ontario.Joining Pierce Brosnan as the fern a 1 e romantic lead for the picture is Canadian actress Annie Gali-peau who plays Anahareo.Galipeau is an Algonquin Indian who lives in Manowaki, Quebec, close to the Indian reservation. She was discovered by Lord Attenborough over three years ago when he was first casting the part. Then she was thought to be too young for the part, but time was on her side.Once Williamson’s script had been completed, Eberts and Attenborough immediately sought out Brosnan for the leading role, but the talented superstar had a prior commitment to finish the Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies and its inherent global publicity obligations.Brosnan, currently one of Hollywood’s leading box office draws is riding high with the phenomenal success of his definitive portrayal of 007 and was thrilled with idea of working with Lord Attenborough who is often referred to as the quintessential actor’s director.“I am not playing the role as a hero.I am playing the role as a man,” says Brosnan during a brief break from the film’s hectic schedule.“Grey Owl was a very complicated man who was not sure of his own identity. He was a man who ran away from himself, ran away from his childhood and the life he lived in England to become Archie/Grey Owl.He was a complex, fascinating, and tortured person.” “I think when he was out among nature on his own that he had the best contentment of his life, but when he tried to mix himself up with the rest of the world, things just fell apart for him.I’m sure in six months time there will be some residue of him which will remain with me, but in the meantime he is a wonderful character to live with.” When Richard Attenborough was a boy in Leicester, England in the 1930s he and his brother David queued for hours waiting to attend a lecture by the then celebrated exotic Red Indian Grey Owl who often toured Europe to promote his books and the cause for conservation.“I love biographical subjects,” says the distinguished director.“Pierce and I are entertainers and our first concern is that people come to see our work.” “We are in the entertainment business but within the entertainment business there is still a context for talking about people who literally have affected the way that we see the world and Grey Owl did that.” “After his death he was discarded and pushed aside, the respected thespian continues.“I feel that the case for the environment might have been considerably further advanced if the message had not been thrown out with the messenger. What Grey Owl had to say was true - whether it came from a villain or a hero.Grey Owl single-handedly saved the Canadian beaver and he began the whole campaign to save the Canadian forests.“He was, quite simply a most remarkable man and his story has everything for the cinema-drama, humor, sentiment, a landscape and image that is quite extraordinary - the vast wilds of Northern Canada and its lakes.” “I find it very interesting that what he had to say could not be ignored,” interjects Brosnan.“Here we are making a movie about him and during the 70s he was rediscovered, and that is because what he stood for was truthful, yet they say he was a dishonest man or a false fellow. But his sincerity and character as well as his caring for the wilderness, no one could take from him.” STEVE GROVES Director Richard Attenborough page 6 May 22-28, 1998 Townshipsw eek Country George Jones proves oldies still are goodies Multi-talented Warmer releases one of his best Come on over to the country” is one of the nicest invitations one can receive when it comes to music. On the country side this week there’s many new releases and we’ll take a look at what’s hot.STEVE WARINER, Bumin' the Roadhouse Down, (Capitol) Wariner has been blessed with an extremely fruitful career, producing 40 Top-40 hits between 1980 and 1994.Besides being a good country singer, he’s one of the best guitar players in the music city.He also masters the art of songwriting and tops it all with his skills as a painter. For a while his career seemed to stall, partly due to the huge parade of newcomers with good looks and tight jeans. This wasn’t enough to discourage Wariner, who persevered, turninghis impressive writing skills to work for other popular artists such as Garth Brooks (co-writing “Long Neck Bottle”) and Clint Black (“Nothing But The Tail-lights”).With the new album it’s obvious the blond singer didn’t give all his good material to other recording artists and kept a few good songs for his debut album on Capitol Nashville, one of the best of his career On the infectious, Texas-swing type title track, you’ll find Garth Brooks singing along, returning the favor. They sound as if they’ve been sharing a stage forever.“Holes In the Floor of Heaven,” is a great and sentimental number that has already left a mark on the country music charts.Ballads are certainly Wariner’s strength and this new collection offers a few highlights, such as the moody “A Six Pack Ago,” with a classic country theme - losing and boozing - Country Connection Jessie Aulis ^HZI Snooker.(R) 1:30 AM (3) (1:37) Paid Program (23 (1:36) Friday Night B
