By Diahann Nadeau Theatre Review Avast mateys and ahoy, that pirate of legend, Long John Silver, is about to come ashore on the Knowlton stage this weekend.Along with young Jim Hawkins, Silver and his band of villainous buccaneers will be setting sail for Treasure Island.Sunshine Theatre is bringing Robert Louis Stevenson’s wonderful adventure Treasure Island to the stage in an adaptation by Ara Watson.Douglas Hooper is directing this effort, and is aware that many will wonder why Sunshine Theatre has picked Treasure Island for a Christmas presentation.“We chose it because it is a classic. It is a play for kids, and it is nostalgic, traditional — I think it will remind people of their youth,” he said.“It touches a lot of things we relate to our youth: the search for adventure, looking for treasure — wondering if it is worth the search. The book was written for a boy — Stevenson’s stepson, and it has a boy as the hero. This adaptation is a memory play—it is kind of dreamlike, it is a quest.Jim is telling the story, trying to make sense of his experiences. He is troubled by his past, but remembers it with some fondness." Although better known for his work with students on the stage at Massey-Vanier, Hooper is no newcomer to directing.Nevertheless, this is his first time directing an adult cast — a group that is not working for a grade.Hooper is finding this experience offers new challenges, but also unexpected rewards.“It is definitely different. It works out though, because the adults are self-motivated, not doing it for the grades. So I DAVID ANDERSON/PHOTO CORRESPONDENT Sunshine Theatre brings Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island to the stage in an adaptation by Ara Watson and directed by Douglas Hooper.am getting more intense performances, and I am enjoying directing the adults — they understand the subtleties. They have more experience.I find they respond faster to direction.” Treasure Islands was published in 1883, but Stevenson set it in the 18th century.Hooper notes its values reflect that era’s sensibilities.“All the people in this book are op- portunists. The good guys and the bad guys are all going after a treasure that doesn’t belong to them, a treasure that is stolen to begin with. But somehow there is this kind of enlightenment idea that because the good guys are just that — good — they have the right to go after the treasure whereas the bad guys do not.The bad guys just don’t deserve it.” See Treasure, Page 3 vm-.i : e, /tv»**, Come and see me at the CARREFOUR DE L'ESTRIE ¦dull Thursday, December 12th Friday, December 13th 10:00 am.to 1:00 p.m.2:00p,m.to 4:00 p.m.5:30 p.m.to8:30p.m, Saturday, December 14th Sunday, December 15th 10:00 a.m.to 1:00 p.m.2:00 p.m.to 4:00 p.m. page 2 December 13-December 19, 2002 TALK OF THE TÔwmhipS dining out Let your taste buds do the walking - fine dining is a Townships tradition The upside (and downside) of holiday libations By Judy Schultz Southam News Ho ho, it’s the party season.Drinks after work. The office party. An open house here, a cocktail party there.Libations and celebrations, and merrily we roll along. For some of us, the holidays aren’t properly launched without a good, rummy eggnog.Others are happy to quaff the seasonal crantini by the pitcher, and those who love Champagne year-round love it even more when we have a better excuse to drink it.We asked three bartenders to give us one of their most popular seasonal refreshments, and share their recipes.Colleen Buzikevich, a bartender at the venerable Sherlock Holmes, goes through vats of eggnog over the holidays.“Our customers love it.We do have it available year round, but it’s especially popular now,” says Buzikevich.“Eggnog is one of those friendly, let’s-have-a-Christmas-drink-together things, an all-time favourite with our regulars.” They make their eggnog with spiced rum, which is a bit sweeter than regular rum, with a backbeat of nutmeg, ginger, cardamom and a whisper of cinnamon.Sherlock Holmes Rum Eggnog • 1 ounce (28 mL) Captain Morgan’s spiced rum • 10 ounce (284 mL) mug, ice cubes or SOUTHAM ÏÏ2HS Sherlock Holmes Pub bartender Colleen Buzikevich and her Christmas eggnog.crushed ice • Commercial eggnog Put the rum in a mug, add ice, stir, and top up with eggnog.Dust with nutmeg, and add a cinnamon stick muddler.Ed Donszelmann, manager and coowner of Savoy Lounge, had bartender Merrie Ladouceur whip up a special cocktail with a seasonal hue.“We invented this especially for Journal Bistro,” says Donszelmann.“When our DJ came in and took a sip, he said, ‘Wow! In the last months, news media were full of references to the notion of a Crusade. The clash between the Muslim world and the West is hardly a new phenomenon. Thus, it is interesting to learn more about how the concept developed over the centuries. From that perspective, James Reston's book Warriors of God, makes an excellent contribution.Reston relates the story of the Third Crusade, in which Richard the Lionheart tried to win back the Kingdom of Jerusalem, which had been vanquished by Saladin.(Salah ad-Din).In 1098, the Kingdom of Jerusalem (also called the Latin Kingdom) came into existence.Military monks (like the Templars and the Hospitalers) protected the geographic entity upon which a chain of castles were built.Over time, the situation changed when the Muslims attempted to win back their land.Eighty-nine years later, on Oct.2, 1187, Saladin conquered the Latin Kingdom and entered Jerusalem effectively starting the Third Crusade .The Christian Kings wanted — at all costs — to regain their former turf.Richard the Lionheart, King of England, Philip Augustus, King of France and even Frederick of Barbarossa, Emperor of Germany embarked on a journey to achieve this goal.In Reston’s words, “the great conflict of 1187 seemed to be simply a clash between only two faiths. It was between the concept of a single Almighty God, Allah, versus the concept of God in Three persons, Blessed Trinity: between the reverence for Calvary versus the reverence for the Rock, where the prophet Muhammad had trodden on his nocturnal journey to heaven; between the Holy Sepulcher and the al Aqsa Mosque.” This theological conflict of views was not meant to disappear over time. Thus, on April 20th, 1191 King Philip Augustus of France arrives in Acre.King Richard was to follow, on June 8 of the same year.As for Barbarossa, he never reached the Holy Land, for he died en route. The Crusade was to last more than a year.At first, the Crusaders encountered military success. But time and circumstances would wear them out.The Crusade not only had a religious connotation, it had political implications.Pope Celestine III, of course, is a staunch supporter of the Crusade.“But he had no illusions about the motivation of its participants.“It was certainly not the fear of God nor any stirring of penitence that inspired them,” he was to say later, “but pride and vainglory directed all their enterprise.” In the summer of 1991, Philip Augustus leaves the Crusade for France. This departure weakens the movement.Furthermore, upon his return Augustus contributes to the undermining of Richard’s position as King of England. At the same time, Richard’s brother, Earl John, makes every possible move to wrest power from his brother. In his quest, he allies himself with many crowned heads of Europe, who dislike Richard. In September 1192, Richard, exhausted and worried about the situation in England, departs. The King and the Sultan reached an agreement allowing a Crusader force to remain at designated places on the land and the Christian believers could keep visiting the Holy sites without fee or interference. Thus ended the Third Crusade. The victory of the Arab sultan had many explanations.First, he had a bigger margin of error than his opponent. After all, he was on his turf and did not need to bring troops by sea.Second, he and his soldiers were also comfortable with the weather, which was not the case with the soldiers of the Crusade.Third, the Christian soldiers were out- Between The Covers Marc Nadeau I'M LEARNING FRENCH Because.more friends means more fun! Maria’s life changes when she finds herself falling in love with a hotel guest, an aspiring U.S.senator played by Britain’s Ralph Fiennes.Originally the story was quite different — involving a maid and a British prince who fall in love — and Lopez played a key role in getting it changed. One night, producer Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas came to the actress’s home to discuss the route the script should take.Lopez liked the basic “upstairs-downstairs” aspect of the screenplay, with a storyline contrasting the lives of hotel employees with the swank guests whom they serve, but she also had her own ideas for developing the character of Maria and she based her suggestion on her own experience of growing up in the Bronx.“I said: ’Why don’t you make her from one of the outer boroughs, because these are the people who travel into Manhattan and it’s a whole different dynamic. They take the train every day and it’s like entering a different world.’ I know because I lived in the Bronx for 20 years.” So Maria evolved into a person more like Lopez herself.“She’s not me, but she’s very veiy close to who I am, and I do understand her.Certain elements of her character were very very real to me.” One reason Lopez relates so intensely to this character is that Maria isn’t content with the idea of being a chambermaid all her life and wants to rise higher in the hotel business. This kind of will and determination Lopez understands totally. And like Maria, she had to fight class and environment and family to succeed. She describes herself as someone “who had a very big dream and a lot of aspirations and a lot of passion for what they wanted to do, and being from the Bronx and from a minority.” Exactly the sort of person who prompted those about her to question her ambitions and ask: “What are you doing? This is crazy. You obviously will not succeed in that business and you obviously will have wasted your life.” Lopez heard it all.“A lot of people get beaten down by that mentality and are held back,” she says now.But she responded in a typically Jennifer Lopez manner.“You go about proving yourself little by little.I had such a will in me and such a passion in me to pursue my ambition.” Now, she’s at the top of the heap and coping with a new kind of challenge—the challenge of reminding people in the industry that J.Lo, the tabloid celebrity, is also Jennifer Lopez the dedicated actress. In fact, she seems to see her current star status as something of a career impediment.“There’s something weird about being in tabloids and in the media a lot .It’s weird because even though this is supposed to be a business of creative people, they still think you are that image." Early in her career, Lopez worked for top directors like Oliver Stone (U-Turn), Francis Ford Coppola (Jack), and Bob Rafaelson (Blood And Wine), but she says a lot of people in Hollywood have forgotten this. You sense that she’s gearing up for a new battle in a characteristically Jennifer Lopez way.“It’s something I have to combat.I have to change the minds of those directors who think they know everything there is to know about me." TALK OF THE Towns flips ¦»¦ '¦ i THE ¦ in in» _Record________ A world of adventure, comedy and drama awaits December 13-December 19, 2002 page 9 movies Wood adapts to notoriety of Rings trilogy SOUTHAM ->; f/tH i W mM- 9*S«ï jgggg Wm •'Î hi y A —- Elijah Wood knows that his portrayal of the courageous Hobbit, Frodo will always be part of his identity.By Jamie Portman Southam News Elijah Wood knows that The Lord of the Rings will always be part of his identity—just as The Wizard of Oz became an indelible part of Judy Garland’s persona more than 60 years ago.“I don’t think there’s any way to get away from that,” says Wood, who finds himself being recognized more and more on the street as a result of his portrayal of the courageous Hobbit, Frodo, in the Rings trilogy.“Because of the success of the movies and the way that people have embraced them, I think they’ll be recognized as great movies for years and years and I’ll always be associated with them.” He sees The Lord of the Rings as a career asset, “as long as it’s not the only thing I’m known for.I’m lucky enough to have had a career beforehand that I was recognizable for to a certain degree.” Still, he thanks his lucky stars he did not have to endure the kind of limelight that was Macaulay Culkin’s lot after the release of Home Alone.Wood’s career as a child actor paralleled that of Culkin’s — they even appeared together in one movie — but Culkin came to hate acting because he loathed the celebrity aspect, whereas Wood simply continued working out of the glare and acquiring the reputation of being a dependable young actor because of his performances in films like Forever Young, The Ice Storm and The War.Wood is 21 now—soft-spoken, assured and very focused. He’s constantly being asked how he managed to avoid the pain many child actors experience in their transition to adulthood, and he always has trouble answering.“To be perfectly honest, when you’re in the middle of a transition, in your own mind you’re simply growing. You see things from project to project. In retrospect, however, 1 think a lot of it has to do with the fact that I was never part of anything that was particularly child-oriented.So 1 was never branded a child actor. Also, I was never part of anything really huge when I was really young, so I had this very lucky kind of gradual growth as an actor in terms of knowing who I am.I think that was a real help to me because I always kept getting scripts and managed to keep working.“Now I’m 21 and The Lord of the Rings is huge, but because I’ve also had a career beforehand, I’m blessed. It kind of all happened perfectly—and it wasn’t by design either. It just sort of worked that way.” With The Two Towers, the second film in the cycle, opening Dec.18, Wood is trying to keep things in perspective. The new movie breaks into three parallel storylines with the various protagonists continuing to combat the forces of darkness, but the most important thread is still Frodo’s perilous mission to return the sinister Ring to Mordor, the Land of Shadow, and to end its sinister power for good by throwing it into the volcano where it was first forged. The Lord of the Rings has been a daunting acting challenge for Wood.Just how daunting will become evident a year from now when the final film, The Return of the King, documents the ferocious toll that possession of the One Ring will impose on Frodo both physically and emotionally.Indeed, the current film gives portents of Frodo’s potential fate when the pitiful, emaciated Gollum enters the picture: this scrawny creature with a personality split between the powers of good and evil has been reduced to his present state by an earlier association with the Ring.“There’s a certain understanding that Frodo has of the world and of the way things work and of people. There’s a perceptiveness which kind of keys him in to what Gollum is about. He sees in Gollum what he could end up becoming. He sees almost a mirror image of himself down the line because Gollum was once a Hobbit himself and as a result of carrying the ring he has become this wretched awful creature,” Wood says.As the whole world now knows, all three of J.R.R.Tolkien’s books were shot simultaneously over an 18-month period in director Peter Jackson’s native New Zealand. But Wood says The Two Towers posed problems from the beginning.“It has always been a thorn in our side in terms of how to figure it out. With any trilogy, the second part is always complicated because it’s the middle story and the book is quite difficult to translate to the screen and we always had a difficult time dealing with it be cause its three individual stories split.” Wood and other actors were encouraged to provide their own input as the screenwriters struggled with the structural problems of a book that sees the original members of the Fellowship streamed into three separate groups as they pursue their mission of defeating the Dark Lord Sauron and his agents.Wood was anxious that the saga’s emotional resonance be safeguarded and that the film be not just a scary adventure.“To try to tell these stories and cut back and forth in such a way that you can continue the momentum as well as continue the themes is really difficult, as well as making sure that it doesn’t lose its heart because this is quite a dark story about the looming genocide of the last race of man.So it was difficult to infuse it with heart. It worked — it was just very difficult to figure out.” Wood is seeing more and more scripts these days.“But oddly enough, I haven’t had one script that had anything remotely to do with fantasy.” He doesn’t mind.“The thing is — you can’t really do another fantasy because this one is the best. It’s the most realistic, most fully realized fantasy novel ever written, so you can’t do anything else!” Ciné m 3 4T 2 O 41 , bout, Bertrand-Fabi MOVIE INFO 821-9099 iuujuj.galaxycincmas.com SH0WTIM6S €FF€CTIV€ DECEMBER 13TH TO DECEMBER I9TH one of country music’s most popular performers. Not only has he garnered immense fan support — 19 Number 1 singles, and six multi-platinum albums that have sold more than 25 million copies — but he has the respect of his peers. With his hard work, distinctive style and great talent, McGray has managed to build an enduring career, to say the least. But for the Louisiana singer, it is only the beginning. For his eighth album, a 15-song collection entitled Tim McGrawy and the Dancehall Doctors, McGraw has decided to break a few Nashville rules by recording it with his road band instead of studio musicians. It is very rare that a country singer goes in studio with his own band.Usually, the ‘Nashville Way’ requires artists to hire session musicians who go in studio to lay down their tracks. The artist goes in later and sings with the pre-laid tracks.Although it is now very rare to hear of an artist going against the norm, McGraw is taking that long walk, which fol-lows in the footsteps of some of the greatest country legends like Waylon Jen- nings, Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard.By doing this, McGraw got much more artistic freedom, and a rawer sound that his band, the Dancehall Doctors, really contributed to.Throughout his new disk, McGraw and his band bring a lot of wonderful emotions that feature a lot of soul. The arrangements are very innovative, and McGraw’s performance is passion-filled.This album was really done with the music in focus, not the country charts. But while the album offers a solid musical collection that will later chart a number of singles, it is not flawless. The first problem comes with a cover of Elton John's ‘Tiny Dancer’.McGraw seems to want to take control of the melody and the nuances of this song as it was done by John, but he does not succeed.By the end of the song, McGraw is still searching for the right way to do it.The second mistake is the addition of some R&B vocals, which doesn't do anything for the overall product.Nevertheless, this is still a great collection, and if you are willing to forget these little things there’s a good chance that listening to the album will bring you a lot of pleasure. The album also showcases great interaction between the different musicians.First is guitarist Darran Smith (who co-produced this album with McGraw and Byron Gallimore, who’s overseen all of McGraw’s previous albums).Joining Smith is Denny Hemingson on steel guitar, Bob Minner on acoustic guitar, bassist John Marcus, fiddler Dean Brown, keyboard player Jeff McMahon, drummer Billy Masson and percussionist David Dunkley. Most of these guys have been with McGraw for more than 10 years, so it is to be expected that the energy will be electrifying when they play. The single ‘Comfort Me’ offers a bit of an Irish feel, and carries a message of patriotism although very subtile.‘Tickin’ Away’ and ‘Illegal’ are two songs that McGraw has been doing on stage for years, and they’re also the two songs he uses in his soundchecks most of the time.He tried recording them for prior albums before, but the finished products always sounded too slick for what he wanted. This time around, he was able to get the gritty, rootsy sound needed so here they are.‘Home’ is probably the most traditional song on McGraw’s latest. It offers a timeless regard at a little slice of life.‘Red Ragtop’ is about choices we have to make, and regrets that often come with it.It is the story of teenage lovers who abort their child. The topic is so universal that anyone can relate to this.McGraw shines on the beautiful love song T Know How To Love You Well’.This is the type of material fans have been expecting him to perform because they know that deep down this is a song for Faith Hill. The album offers another great love song, but it’s not the same type of love.‘All We Ever Find’ addresses more the particular moment in time, the perfect moment that one will keep in mind for ever. The choice of material is great, the atmosphere very good and McGraw’s performance are riveting. This is a giant step in a different direction for this amazing artist.Jessie Aulis Country Connection TALK OF THE
