Brome County NEWS Wednesday, June 17, 1998 ROÇH VALLIERES INC.514-242-2544 Specialized General Contractor Excavation, public and private roads, foundation, drainage, sewage, artificial ponds all sizes, landshaping, hydraulic hammer (rock breaker), demolition Aggregate, Top soil, VR transport.Work done by hour or by contract The Largest Circulation Weekly in Brome —Missisq. The Tour turns 10 By Amy Tector It’s that time of year: The sun is shining, pools are filled, school is almost out and the Tour des Arts is on again.Thirty-five artists from Abercorn to Mansonville and points in between will be opening up their studios to the public for eight days starting July 18.Brochures of the Tour are available in most shops and tourist bureaus in the Knowlton-Sutton-Mansonville area. These brochures contain a new computer-enhanced map of the area with every participating artist’s studio clearly defined. They also have a small description of each artist and what they do.People may choose which artists to visit and may drop by their studios between 10 a.m.and 5 run.any day of the Tour. The eight-day event is freerî\the public. Not only do people get to see the creations of me local artists, but the Tour is also a good excuse to go for sorrm beautiful drives in the area. Many of the studios are located in particularly scenic spots, which only serve to complement the art on display. The Tour is celebrating its 10th birthday this year.Organizers are planning a big bash in honor of this decade of creativity. The party is to thank the artists and sponsors who have made the Tour such a success over the years. The Tour has been a hit over the years because the artists enjoy it almost as much as their visitors.Aside from getting a lot of exposure and a chance to sell their works, they also get a great deal of feedback from the public.SEE TOUR, PAGE C Radio Days TANYA TKACH/CORRESPONDENT Twelve-year-old Matthew Colvil and 11-year-old Justin Gauthier were among the scouts who helped with the annual Fessenden Day barbecue in Knowlton this year.Ham radio operator Clemente Paul Beauregard showed them what it takes to communicate via radio waves. For more on the celebrations, please see page 3.Granby’s Justin Boulanger is top student 72 Massey-Vanier grads receive academic awards By Amy Tector Cowansville Massey-Vanier’s best and brightest received recognition for their strong scholastic abilities at the high school’s Academic Awards Ceremony. The ceremony, which took place last week, was a warm and friendly affair. The affection and pride the teachers felt for their top students shone through during the informal presentation.Seventy-two grads received awards, prizes and plaques for their academic and community efforts.A total of $29,000 was given out over the course of the night. The scholarships came from a variety of sources.Teachers, local businesses and community organizations all donated money.Local elementary schools also awarded funds to some of their top alumni. The District of Bedford Commissioners Scholarships were given out to nine students this year. The commissioners have traditionally donated their stipends to the scholarship fund. This year’s donation was bittersweet, however, because it was the last time the Commissioners Scholarships were given out in connection with the District of Bedford because of the creation of the new Eastern Townships School Board. The top student of the evening was Justin Boulanger of Granby, who won eight awards, including the prestigious Governor General’s Bronze Medal. The medal is given out to the student with the highest overall average for his or her last two years of high school.Linda Person, co-chair of the Awards Committee, said Boulanger’s average of 95 per cent was one of the highest Massey-Vanier has seen in many years. There were receptions before and after the awards ceremony where name-tagged presenters and students were given the chance to meet and mingle.“We want students to recognize that the community is very generous,” said Person. It is not only students who enjoy the night, however. Many presenters get a real sense of satisfaction at seeing who their money is going to.“It’s such a thrill to come here every year and present an award,” said Douglas Wighton, representing the Royal Canadian Legion, Brome Branch #23.“We love giving money to these young people. It’s nice to see them getting recompense for their hard work.” Award-winning student Robin Piette echoed Wighton’s comments: “I’m really grateful to be getting the extra money. It will help out a lot.I’ve worked very hard for it.” C\ - the home computer, there is a simple five-letter password which is not the same as the four-letter password on the laptop or the five-letter password on the computer used at work.To ensure there is no breach of security - and to prevent some news thief from breaking into our system and stealing all the news that will appear in the next day’s paper - Southam changes our eight-letter password every few weeks, roughly 20 new passwords a year. There was a time the only number used to identify me was a social insurance number.I was led to believe by the issuer it was such a highly confidential number, I carried my SIN card backwards in my wallet in case some wayward eye would spot it when I opened my purse in the grocery store and use it to - 1 don’t know - discover how much tax I pay.Today, Revenue Canada can use it to find my blood type. And I would be happy to tell anyone who asks how much tax I pay. Espérons que la peur collective actuelle pousse les intéressés à tout faire pour apporter les solutions nécessaires et à éviter l’Apocalypse 2000.B R O M O N T ANTIQUE SHOW AND SALE VERSANTS DE BROMONT 120 BOULEVARD BROMONT BROMONT, QUEBEC cSsSafe?-, FRIDAY, /UNE.26 • 4 PM TO 9 PM SATURDAY JUNE.27 • 10 AM TO 6 PM SUNDAY, JUNE.28 • 10 AM TO 5 PM INFORMATION • 266-9971 ADMISSION • {3.50 SENIOR • $3.00 Wednesday, June 17, 1998 -paog 5 Brome County Neyj si LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Pesky cats kill lovely birds Dear Editor, Will there be a law to say to those who keep cats they must keep them indoors or out of the way of becoming a pest to non-cat lovers? They are destructive and very stressful to one when they kill our lovely birds. Please don’t say ‘that’s their nature’.I know this but it does not make me want them and their killing ways on my property.Linda E.Morris Sutton Farewell Ursula Horton and Liette Nadeau Dear Editor, It is with great appreciation that we say farewell, good luck and many thanks to two wonderful women who have dedicated many years to the youth of Sutton and the region.Ursula Horton and Liette Nadeau are leaving Le Jardin D’Enfants de Sutton pre-school.On May 28 the two teachers passed out their last diplomas to some 13, four and five-year-olds, who will have a great head start on their education thanks to the two devoted and caring pre-school teachers.Every spring these teachers say goodbye and good luck to a group of youngsters with whom they have built a very strong relationship. This year’s goodbyes were particularly touching and emotional.Thank you to Ursula Horton for her 23 years of dedication. She had the unique and special experience of teaching a second generation. Some of her m mm ' i " PHOTOS COURTESY LE JARDIN D’ENFANTS DE SUTTON Ursula Horton and Liette Nadeau say good-bye to the children of Le Jardin d’Enfants de Sutton where they taught.very first students were fortunate enough to have some of her guidance and influence for their own children.Happy retirement Ursula! Brome County News Wednesday, June 17, 1998 page 7 Through food sales, donations Barbecue raises $6,000 for teen drop-in centre By Amy Tector Knowlton The Knowlton Pub was jumping as the Second Annual Community Barbecue served up burgers, duck ka-bobs and good music while raising $6,000 through food sales and donations for the teen drop-in centre.More than 200 people showed up on June 7 to show their support for the centre.Besides the barbecued food, cooked up by the Town of Brome Lake fire department, people enjoyed music from local musicians.Ralph Steiner, Darlene Bell, Chris Severs, Jeremy Labreque, Tom Ransom and Amos Joannides were just some of the talent who entertained the audience. The idea for the community barbecue, and the centre itself, evolved two years ago.Gerry Wood, owner of the Pub, noticed that teens were hanging around the bar during the day, simply because they had nowhere else to go.He approached Johanne Morin, executive director of Town of Brome Lake Community Services, about the problem and the teen drop-in centre was born.Wood then offered the Pub as a fund-raising site. The drop-in centre is open every Friday and Saturday night from 7 to 10 p.m.It’s a place where kids can play a bit of pool, some Nintendo and just hang out.“If we didn’t have the drop-in we’d just be hanging around town, doing nothing. It keeps us out of trouble,” said Blake Oliver, a teen who goes to the centre on weekends. The money from the fund-raiser will go mainly towards paying the two adult animators who keep an eye on the kids over the year.“By last November we had the problem of success. There was such a demand that we needed to hire a second person on,” said Morin.Morin said the community has really gotten behind the centre, and has supported the Community Barbecue. The drop-in is flooded with donations of food and gas for the annual barbecue, as well as the local talent.Wood donated the Pub, and his staff volunteered their time for the cause. The Pub also donated all of the proceeds from drink sales for the evening.“We appreciate the Pub so much. They do everything. This is such an easy fund-raiser for us,” said Morin. The event was a great success. The Community Barbecue raised $3,000, while donations, anonymous and otherwise, increased the total by another $3,000.Morin was very pleased with the event: “We’re getting a lot of good feed back about the entertainment, the food and the whole ambience. It all just came together.” NOTICE OF THANKS JUANITA WILLEY/WIGHTON I would like to thank all the electors of Abercorn, East Bolton, Potton, Sutton, Sutton Township, St.Etienne-de-Bolton, and West Bolton who supported me as Commissioner in Electoral Division #4 of the Eastern Townships School Board.I am honored to continue to support the educational needs of our communities. Please feel free to contact me at 292-3800./ Bicycles Rea.Sale Bicvcles Rea.Sale Velo Sport CanAm ‘159 ‘149 Oryx1000S ‘779 ‘729 Velo Sport Express ‘229 ‘209 Oryx Stunt *529 ‘499 Velo Sport Blast S ‘399 ‘369 Mikado Zenith *779 *729 Velo SportVolcano DS ‘599 *559 Mikado Zenith DS ‘1499 ‘1369 Peugeot Panorama Peugeot Prestige ‘339 ‘549 ‘309 ‘509 Tune-up Reg.‘30 tax incl.Sale $1950 tax incl.Bell helmets -10% Sale ends June 21 ”/98 New, used & EXCHANGE ^ VeloSrome INC.7 1 "107, ch.Knowlton, West Brome 266-5822 * E-mail:velobrome@acbm.qc.ca mm TANYA TKACH/CORRESPONDENT Town of Brome Lake councillors making hamburgers and hot-dogs for the benefit barbecue.àfenilne 303, ch.Knowlton, Lac Brome Merci à toute notre clientèle !
