TALK OF rri THEr .lownsnips The Weekly Guide to Arts & Entertainment in the Eastern Townships November 17-23, 2000 Joyful Guys & Dolls hits Knowlton DAVID ANDERSON/CORRE5 PONDENT Ralph Steiner and a cast of shady gamblers pray that ‘Luck Be A Lady’ in the production of Guys & Dolls at the Knowlton Pub Playhouse.By Wendy Denman Special to The Record Knowlton A legendary musical brimming with finger-snapping songs, high-stepping dance numbers, multi-hued costumes and tales of love has just opened at the Knowlton Pub Playhouse.Guys & Dolls, based on the endearing characters created by Damon Runyon, depicts the antics of a shady group of gamblers, their dancing girl friends and the missionaries who would save them. The place is New York’s Broadway, the time is the late 1940s and the theme is about discovering who you are.First opening on Nov.24, 1950, Guys & Dolls has remained one of the most memorable and loved musicals of the 20th century.By producing the play in Knowlton, Sunshine Theatre Productions has achieved a major feat for amateur theatre. The cast of 25 is challenged at every turn. The musical score is complex, the dance numbers fast-paced and dialogue full of New Yorkese.“It is a big endeavor, a really major production for us,” says artistic director Sunil Mahtani.“It’s also a natural for Sunshine Theatre because it’s about hope and it makes you feel good." "I love musicals and this is one of my favourites. It is a fable, a fantasy, but it also has some depth to it," adds Mahtani."It's about having faith in yourself and believing in others. It's also about how love can change the course of one's life.” This is the fourth major production for Sunshine and its first musical.Previously, the group brought the comedies Lend Me A Tenor, You Can’t Take It With You and The Play’s The Thing to the Knowlton stage.“Very significantly for us, Guys & Dolls has many settings. Before this, we worked with only one set. Here, we are dealing with almost 20 scene changes,” says Mahtani.“We have made an effort never to have a dead spot on stage.During scene changes, there’s always something going on in front of the curtain. We keep it moving all the time.” SEE MUSICAL, PAGE 4 DAVID ANDERSON/CORRESPONDENT Michaela Barnes and the Hot Box Debutantes say ‘Take Back Your Mink.’ Look What’s Inside Fast food for autumn days from Peter Berleÿs book, The Modem Vegetarian Kitchen.Sitarist Guy Bernier will bring India to the Townships when he plays Bandeen Hall.Internationally acclaimed organ duo will play St.Mark’s Chapel this Sunday.New guide geared to anglophones demystifies cancer and provides information.Marriage of nature and function: the forest is the canvas for furniture maker Creelman.t ’00$- ’ .P .Fast food for autumn days By Louise Crosby Southam News Leslie, my great friend from Grade 11, e-mails from Cherry Hill, Nova Scotia, to tell me she has just returned from a walk on the beach, the sun shining, waves lapping quietly on the sand at low tide.1 know the beach, it follows a sweeping curve out to a point that takes you to Vogler's Cove, a popular place for sea kayaking. You can see for miles, and it is beautiful.Rocks made silky smooth by the waves have been pushed into a hillock back on the beach, and beyond them is a lake framed by long grasses. My Mom phones. She and Dad have spent the day at their cottage in Quebec, cleaning the debris from a felled fir tree before winter sets in.They eat their sandwiches on the deck, in the sun, surrounded by bril- liant colour. My time will come on the weekend, maybe a walk in the woods in Ottawa’s Gatineau Park during that precious space of Sunday afternoon when the chores are done. With the last of the warm weather in mind, here's a tasty recipe for everyone who would rather be outdoors - a quick and easy chickpea curry from Peter Berley's The Modern Vegetarian Kitchen (Regan Books).Basmati rice would be an excellent accompaniment, but try Berley's three-grain pilaf for a change.Together with the curry, it makes a nutritious and highly digestible meal.Chickpea Vegetable Curry Serves 4 1 cup (250 mL) onion, chopped 2 tablespoons (25 mL) un- JERRY PIZZERIA Greek & Kalian Dishes Daily Menu o,^oT SPECIAL OF THE MONTH Entrée: Coquille St-Jacques or Escargot Gratiné.Chicken Brochette with 8 Shrimp Greek Style .Greek or Garlic Shrimp (12).1 Chicken & 1 Pork Brochette (Combo).served with choice ol Salad, Potato and Rice $4.45 $8.95 $9.25 $7.65 106 Queen St., Lennoxville 569-9381-2 Ul CASE AIM SPORTS, 2655 King St.West, Sherbrooke (819) 822-0050 Ùl ^Vuilie 'fuacLtU W(&ring your wine elax by candlelight By reservations only (819) 583-4184 185 Range 5 North Marston, QC SOUTHAM NEWS Chickpea Vegetable Curry is quick and easy for people who would prefer to spend time outdoors on an autumn day.salted butter or extra-virgin olive oil 2 garlic cloves, chopped 1 tablespoon (15 mL) curry power or paste 2 cups (500 mL) cooked chickpeas from 2/3 cup/150 mL dried beans, or one 19-ounce/540 mL can chickpeas, drained and rinsed 1/2 cup (125 mL) carrots, diced 1/2 cup (125 mL) turnips or rutabaga, peeled and diced 1 cup (250 mL) potatoes, peeled and diced 1 cup (250 mL) winter squash, peeled and diced 1 cup (250 mL) water Coarse sea salt 1/2 pound (250 g) spinach, leaves only Freshly chopped cilantro Plain yogurt for garnish In a large sauté pan, over medium heat, combine the onion, butter, garlic and curry powder and sauté for 5 minutes.Raise the heat and add the chickpeas, carrots, turnips, potatoes, squash, water and 1 teaspoon (5 mL) of salt.Bring to a boil, reduce heat to low, cover and cook for about 15 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender.Add the spinach and simmer over medium heat for 2 to 3 minutes until the spinach wilts.Add salt to taste and serve topped with cilantro and yogurt.Three-Grain Pilaf Serves 4 to 6 2 tablespoons (25 mL) olive oil or unsalted butter 1/2 cup (125 mL) green onions, white and tender green parts, minced 1 cup (250 mL) white basmati or jasmine rice 1/2 cup (125 mL) millet* 1/2 cup (125 mL) quinoa* 3 cups (750 mL) vegetable stock or water 3/4 teaspoon (4 mL) coarse sea salt * Available at health food stores Preheat oven to 350 F (180 C).In a 2- to 3-quart (2-3 L) ovenproof saucepan over medium heat, warm the oil.Add the green onions and sauté for 2 to 3 minutes.Add the rice, millet, and quinoa and continue to sauté, stirring, for 3 more minutes, or until the grains are fragrant.Add the vegetable stock and salt.Raise the heat and bring to a boil.Cover the pan and bake in the oven for 30 minutes.Remove the pilaf from the oven and allow it to rest for 5 minutes.Fluff with a fork and serve.,\tNV£N- Specialties • Italian • Canadian • Seafood • Brochettes • Steak • Breakfasts Private Room for Receptions UPt0 70 9uests 4364 Bourque Blvd.Rock Forest (819) 564-2272 819/563-1277 Restaurant DA LEONARDO HOME-MADE PASTAS ITALIAN CUISINE Your hosts Christianne and Giampiero 332, rue Marquette Sherbrooke, QC J1H1M3 TALK OF THE Townships page 2 November 17-23, 2000 : RECORD; dining out Let your taste buds do the walking — fine dining is a Townships tradition November 17-23, 2000 page 3 TALK OF THE TwmhlpS Music, dance, theatre and more.all in the Townships ¦fi» pwiAfgf .: Sitarist brings India to the Townships By Catherine Dean Record Correspondent Guy Bernier loved traveling in India so much he wanted to bring a little bit of the country back with him.During his four trips in India, Bernier began studying the sitar. He was fortunate enough to receive the tutelage of Sri Rabin Ghosh, a disciple of the renowned Allahuddin Khan, also the guru of Ravi Shankar. Now, Townshippers can share in the sounds of India as Bernier joins tabla player Gabriel Dionne in an upcoming concert at Bandeen Hall.Though Bernier has been playing sitar for 27 years, he said he has much to learn."I started playing at age 18 or 19.It's a long brainwash - a pleasant one and a passion," said Bernier.“The more I do it, the more I like it.I now consider that I am just starting right now.It takes a long time. The first book I read on Indian music says it takes 20 years to learn." You've heard of do reh mi, etc., but how about sa ri ga ma pa dha ni sa?"Playing the sitar requires doing five years of scales to be able to understand what the teacher can tell you.Based on singing music, this musical instrument tries to imitate the voice. The instrument gives a lot of singing with the bending of the strings.I can pull the strings up to six half-notes each fret," explained Bernier.Sitar music dates from the 12th century. The shape of the modern sitar stems from the 16th century. While the tradition is ancient, the music is still changing."The music is in a permanent evolution.A player of today can play a raga composed in the 14th century and add things because the music is not static. It is not like Occidental music which is written and very strict," said Bernier. The ragas, which form the basis of music for the sitar, draw on emotions."Raga means sentiment. It is not really a scale, but mostly a feeling," said Bernier."There are more than 70,000.As Sri Rabin Ghosh explained, you will have more than 70,000 feelings in your lifetime.Although there are theoretically 70,000 ragas, some musicians will know a thousand. When a musician knows a hundred, it's a lot." Being able to learn from a master of the sitar has left an indelible mark on Bernier."You have masters throughout the COURTESY GUY BERNIER Tabla player Gabriel Dionne and sitarist Guy Bernier will bring the sounds of India to Bandeen Hall next Friday evening.centuries who brought some new techniques. Now, we have the joy to be able to combine all these techniques of all different masters and add some of our own. After a certain point, the teacher gives you a green light.Last year, my teacher gave me the equivalent of a Baccalaureate in Indian music," Bernier said.In April 1995, Bernier was invited to India by the Matrivani Institute of Experimental Research and Education. Thanks to a grant by the Council of Arts and Letters of Quebec, he performed a concert in Calcutta with Pahlguni Acharia on tabla, Sri Rabin Ghosh and his son Ranjan Ghosh.Bernier says sitar music encourages relaxation."Audiences have a tendency to be- come very silent and listen a lot. It's very meditative - like yoga. It's also very energetic. The speed will increase a lot until the end of the piece," Bernier said."This will be a very exotic evening," he added, speaking of next Friday's show."One which is very relaxing. The music brings a lot of inner piece. It is pleasant and powerful at the same time because it touches you on different chakras." Bernier is included on the CDs Poursuites du trio de jazz François Carrier, and Shakawtu-Faith, by the Senegalese singer Musa Dien Kala.Sitarist Guy Bernier and tabla player Gabriel Dionne will be performing as part of the Musique Chez Nous se- ries at Bandeen Hall at Bishop's University Friday, Nov.24, at 8 p.m.The concert will be recorded by Radio-Canada.Admission is adults $10, seniors $8 and students $5.For ticket information, call (819) 822-9692.COUNTRY MUSIC with TOM WHEELER Sundays, Nov.17 & 24, Dec.8 1:30 p.m.to 5:00 p.m.$5 admission Camping Melbourne 1185 Belmont, Melbourne Info: (819) 826-6222 • (877) 610-4410 TALK OF THE Townships —1^———— —— — THE ¦ M — page 4 November 17-23, 2000 stage (=) LA 0 Jr- Music, dance, theatre and more.all in the Townships ‘There is a lot of real talent in the community’ .DAVID ANDERSON/CORRESPONDENT ‘I’ll Know (When My Love Comes Along)’ sings Jessie Faye Lavin.Contrasting the budding romance between Sky and Sarah is the 14-year engagement between Nathan Detroit and the Hot Box nightclub’s main attraction, Miss Adelaide.Ace McLellan and Michaela Barnes play this duo.“I think every woman can relate to Adelaide and her insecurities about relationships,” Barnes says.“It’s a difficult role for me.I really have to focus to keep the accent.I don’t consider myself a singer or a dancer - and here they expect me to do both! It’s crazy.” “I love being on stage - it’s like playing dress-up.The costumes are just great - feathered hats, long gloves, wonderful bright colors,” she adds.A hundred different costumes have been assembled by Kate Wisdom, also the stage manager of this production. They are bright, multi-coloured and very 1940s.Three distinct groups of characters walk this dream-inspired Broadway. There’s the Guys, led by Steiner and McLellan and backed by Bob Hennessy, Marty Carbonneau, Doug Hooper, Winston MacK-elvie, Peter Meleg, Doug Long and Steve Trew. There’s the Dolls - Darleen Bell, Aldyne Kerrigan, Amanda Rocheleau, Juli Se-nier, Jessica Thomson, Meghan Allen, Katherine Weldon and Barnes. And there’s Sarah Brown’s soul-saving Missionaries played by Donald Wilson, Karen Marginson, Judy Gray, Evelyn Johnston-Main and Melody Simms Morris.Trying to keep them all on the straight and narrow is Jason West-over as police officer Brannigan.Completing the cast is Karen Muzerall as a Havana nightclub singer. The cast has worked long and hard for months now.As opening night drew near, some of the men were asked to make major personal sacrifices: shaving their beards.“We want this authentic,” says Mah-tani.“Men didn’t generally wear beards back then.” Despite the intricacies of the production, at the first full run-though the energy and enthusiasm of the cast was evident and uplifting. This is fun and joyful stuff - and costly.“We are paying a lot for this,” says Sunshine finance man Donald Wilson.“We had to buy the rights and rent the scripts from a New York company, and we’ve rented the best microphones and sound equipment, but you need to, to properly produce a show like Guys & Dolls." Sylvie Poirier and Philip Crozier are a couple in work and in art.Though each musician began a career as a solo organist, their mutual discovery of organ duos has added a new dimension to their lives. The couple has performed together in Canada, the United States, France, Germany, Italy, Britain, Monaco, Denmark and the Czech republic among other places.“We began playing together in 1990.We had some duets in our collection we had never played.Radio Canada was interested in this.We projected a duet concert in May of 1990 in Iberville, recorded by Radio Canada that was a great success.People said ‘y°u should do more of it’ - it grew from there,” said Crozier. As an organ duo, obtaining the often rare music, became a passion.“It’s been a musical discovery.Over the years, we’ve collected 70 duets. We’re always on the lookout for duets,” Crozier said. The generosity of fellow musicians has augmented Poirier and Crozier’s collection.“We managed to get a piece by Loret that was very hard to find.We went to a lecture given by an expert on Loret. He had a copy of a piece that was out of print.Another piece you will see in the program is an unpublished Perrot piece. We acquired it quite by chance from the French organist Olivier Vernet in Iberville. He asked if we knew a piece by Perrot - one of six pieces written for the restoration of one of the historical French organs. He sent us a copy of that and Per-rot’s address and a recording made by the composer and another artist.” The couple are interested in old and new works for the organ. They have commissioned six pieces of duet work by an impressive group of current composers, including Jacobus Kloppers, Gilles Rioux and Denis Bedard.“It's good to increase the duet repertoire by commissioning composers,” said Crozier.“In the present-day, you can ask composers for suggestions.Kloppers likes how we play the music, Rioux has heard us play his piece WÊÊË organ at St.Mark’s is a relatively small organ. All these pieces we play work on an organ this size and we’ve tried to use this organ to its maximum.” The concert should provide a good introduction to organ duets using lots of variety.“The organ is very important and the audience is very important,” Crozier emphasized.“We don’t want to bore people. We don’t play music that is all the same or similar. We aim to please with a very wide choice of music. There’s something for everybody and a discovery for everybody.Organists and audiences alike are fascinated by what they discover and rediscover in organ duets.” twice.” ‘“Dance Suite for Organ Duet’ by Jacobus Kloppers was commissioned in 1997 and premiered in 1998 in Calgary,” Crozier continued.“It’s a very successful concert piece. Its big advantage is that it works on a small organ.Kloppers is South African born.He was at King’s University in Edmonton and moved here 20 years ago.He is a composer and musicologist. His 1960s interpretation of Bach was a landmark thesis which is often quoted in journals.“In March this year, we played Gilles Rioux’s piece in Langres France where Jeanne Mance, Jean Talon and Marguerite Bourgeoys came from,” said Crozier.“It was like New France going back to old France. We commissioned a set of pieces based on Christmas, using ‘Venez divin Messie’, Tl est né, le divin Enfant’, ‘Le Sommeil de l’Enfant Jésus’ and ‘Notre divin Maître’.” The recital also includes work from the standard organ duo repertoire, including music by Beethoven and his teacher, Johann Georg Albrechtsberger.“Albrechtsberger is well-respected and known for fugual and counterpoint writing. He wrote duets because he felt that counterpoint is unplayable by one person - it goes beyond the physical capabilities of one person. He wanted to write complete counterpoint and spread it between two players. Each performance is tailored especially to the organ on-site.“It’s not just us on show,” said Crozier.“It’s the organ. We take the organ into consideration and its ability. The COURTESY PAM EBY Philip Crozier and Sylvie Poirier at the St.James United Church in Montreal, where Crozier is the director of music.Sylvie Poirier and Philip Crozier’s three organ duo CDs will be on sale at the concert, as well as a CD of their solo work. The concert will take place at St.Mark’s Chapel, Bishop’s University, Sunday, Nov.19, at 4 p.m.Tickets: adults $10, seniors $8 and students $5.For ticket information, call 822-9692.IG®[?eS7@QD(7 égpsis < the right foot! into furniture that’s going to work.” Creelman crafts tables, benches, stools and gazebos, but chairs seem to PERRY BEATON/SPECIAL Brian Creelman with his rustic gate. The interesting thing about wood is it’s a material which is oft-overlooked.Although I’m using the same joinery as fine furniture, it's equated with kindling, not with building material.' be his favourite.“In rustic furniture you need to be able to marry an insane shape with ergonomics.Chairmaking and rustic are two different things to find and interface with.Accent pieces like mirrors and lamps can be really funky, nobody’s going to sit in them,” Creelman said.“The chairs have a very idiosyncratic appeal - obviously not everybody’s going to like them. It’s hard to find a generic line that will satisfy most people. When someone who knows something about rustic furniture comes in and says ‘I like this piece,’ you can start from there.” Rustic furniture-making exists in pockets. It is particularly active in the United States. This summer 70 craftspeople gathered in Maine.“Rustics by their very nature tend to be people on the periphery.Corporate drop-outs and people from all walks of life find an attraction in the rustic. It’s out there. There hasn’t been an association of rustic furniture builders. This summer there was an ad hoc attempt to bring people together at the Woodlan-ders Gathering in Maine. It was a three-day meeting-of-the-minds, so to speak.People got together to discuss their experiences from Texas, Wisconsin and South Carolina. It was really interesting. As somebody who does this, you can become isolated,” said Creelman. The artist and the furniture-maker must find a balance.“On the one hand, you want to do what you do, exclusive of the pay-off.The reality check is -1 just can’t keep doing this if the object doesn’t sell.“It’s a fine line between what your ego tells you to do and what your pock- et book tells you to do.” Creelman’s next project involves tree growth and everyday objects.“I’m working with wood in its natural state.I’ll start incorporating everyday objects such as keys, surgically, into the wood. When you implant something in a tree, it naturally devours whatever comes into contact with it.I’d like to create a series of furniture with everyday objects of utility grown into them. This is a three-year plan," Creelman said.Brian Creelman’s work has been featured in a number of shows, including last summer’s art competition at the Frederick Amsden Gallery in Stanstead. It is also displayed at the Farfelu gallery in Sutton. He also creates pieces on commission.Anyone interested in a piece of rustic art for their home or cottage can give him a call at 819-832-4969.Week.: 13:45 • 18:45 • 21 Week-end: 12:45 «15:35 LE PETIT VAMPIRE Week: 13:30 Week-end: 12:45 • 15:50 LA PLANÈTE ROUGE Week.: 13:45 • 18:45 • 21 Week-end: 12:45 • 15:35 LE 6E JOUR Week.: 13:40 «18:35 «21 Week-end: 12:40 • 15:35 LE PETIT NICKY Week.: 13:50 • 19:00 • 21 Week-end: 12:50 • 15:50 LA BELLE-FAMILLE Nightly.: 18:50 • 21:30 (G déc.jeunes enfants) 18:45 • 21:30 (13+ violence) >5 NO PASSES 18:35 * 21:25 accepted Week: 13:30 Week-end.: 12:30 15:30 • 18:35 4204, boul.BeTtrand-Fabi 9 Theatres -
