of fools and the most foolish of passions’ Nationalism is an infantile disease; it is the measles of mankind.— Einstein March 21 not only marked the vernal equinox but also the International Day for the Eli-mination of Racial Discrimination.A good start might be in recognizing the connection between nationalism and racism, nationalism and patriotism. This space has often decried the racism implicit in the Qué- Who’s Who By Tadeusz Letarte bee nationalist rhetoric of “we are a people, a nation, and therefore require a state.” That leads inevitably to “Québec pour les Québécois” and Pierre Bourgault’s nostalgia (in Maintenant ou Jamais) for a Québec where all faces were white and all language was French. But exactly the same thing is inherent in the name of anglo patriotism which leads the Reform Party to accuse Jean-Marc Jacob of ‘sedition’ in the Commons and letter writers to compare Lucien Bouchard to Hitler, accuse him of ‘treason’ and call him ‘traitor’ in The Stanstead Journal.Such emotive (and therefore irrational) language ought to be banned from the debate while the ideas those words represent should be as outdated as the divine right of kings. In fact, ‘treason’ gets its emotional power precisely because it referred to crimes against the king (who had his authority from God).High-treason meant compassing or imagining the death of the sovereign, the heir apparent or eldest unmarried daughter.Petty or Petit-treason meant killing someone to whom you owed obedience — a servant his master, a wife her husband. In 1795, the law was expanded to cover the actual or contemplated use of force to make a king change his counsels or to intimidate parliament.Combating Québec nationalism with Canadian patriotism only compounds the foolishness and multiplies the danger. It is, after all, the conviction that your nation state is better than another because you belong to it.“A silly cock crowing on his own dunghill,” said Richard Aldington while philosopher George Santayana called patriotism “The passion of fools and the most foolish of passions.” A printmaker and a painter exhibit at Bishop’s Cauchemar, acrylic on canvas, by Marie Cuerrier Hébert.LENNOXVILLE — A New York printmaker and a North Hatley painter are currently exhibiting their work at the Bishop’s University Artists’ Centre in Lennoxville.Ken Gray, from Stone Ridge, New York, describes his personal approach to prints as embodying the process of their making.Instead of considering the paper a support for the ink image, his prints are objects of ink and paper combined with varying degrees of pressure produced by the press. He uses repeated and multiple printing, collage and the manipulation of paper to achieve results.Marie Cuerrier Hébert presents a series of recently completed acrylic paintings on canvas. For the artist, the image is the pretext for her work. She said the figures that she paints “represent the fragility, the energy, the pain, the doubt and the vulnerability of human beings through time.” Hébert has lived in the Eastern Townships for the last five years. She has a diploma from l’Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Montréal and specializes in teaching visual arts. The artist Dickens Dvomoi Students at Heroes Memorial elementary school in Cowansville present their evening performance of Nicholas Nickelby on Friday, March 22, at 8 p.m.The full-length The Record—TOWNSHIPS WEÊK— March 22-29, ÏS96—3 TALK OF THE TOWNSHIPS Harris and Mendieta play acoustic set in Ayer’s Cliff AYER’S CLIFF — An evening of acoustic music is in store for those who attend the concert by Allyn Harris and Peter Mendieta at the Cliff House Pub Saturday.Harris and Mendieta have been enjoying an inspired musical collaboration since 1985 when they first began writing new music for acoustic guitar and piano.Five albums and countless performances later, their unique sound is unmistakeable — an ever shifting blend of classical, folk and jazz influences, spacious and soaring.Their music has been described as being like “the purity of a forest night in winter”, “a walk on a mist-covered mountain when the light shines through” and “floating in on a great beam sunlight.” Mendieta’s early work as a guitarist and songwriter established his solo career as a stage and studio musician in Vancouver and Montreal. His composing credits include the National Film Board and CBC Sesame Street as well as personal recording projects. His fascination with guitars, percussion and recording led him to create the Crystal Creek Studio, a professional recording studio in the Three Villages region of the Townships, where he specializes in fine acoustic recordings.Originally from Montreal, Harris studied piano performance and composition at Concordia University and improvisation with David Darling. She currently creates sound-scapes for art exhibits as well as exploring the musical possibilities of unusual outdoor performance sites. She recently became a founding member of the World Forum for Acoustic Ecology, concerned with the preserva- tion of natural and unique sounds as well as the issues of sound pollution and accessibility to silence. For their Cliff House performance, they will be joined by Tanya Maier, who performed there last June as part of the duo Kindred Spirits, and John Henderson on Bodhran.Tickets cost $9 and the show begins at 9 p.m.in the intimate and smoke-free atmosphere of the Cliff House Pub.Tel: (819) 838-4277 for reservations.Next week, Allyn Harris will screen her experimental video work for the public at the Haskell Free Library in Rock Island. This includes animations using organic materials, environmental collages and short documentaries of the work of other artists.Several of these films will also feature soundtracks. The screening will be held on March 27 at 7:30 p.m.at the library.Win books by Record writers Here’s your chance to win recently published books by written by Record journalists Sharon McCully and Sunil Mahtani.Brome County reporter Sharon McCully and well-known local political activist Heather Keith-Ryan (pictured right) spent St.Patrick’s Day signing copies of their book Bonjour, eh ?at a book launch at the Book Nook in Sutton. The primer for English Canadians outside Quebec explains all about the “poutine” of the province without the politics.Townships landscape painter Luigi Tiego (bottom centre) and Record arts reporter Sunil Mahtani (left) were welcomed by Raymond, Chabot, Martin, Paré spokesman Claude Métras for a combination Eas-ten Townships book launch and vernissage last Friday.Mahtani has written a book about the well-known Ste.Catherine de Hatley artist. The exhibit of Tiengo’s paintings continues in the foyer at the Sherbrooke accounting firm until May 2.You can get a copy of the book at Librarie Garneau at the Carrefour, in other bookstores or by taking part in this contest. The Record has two copies of each book to give readers. All you have to do is answer the question below and send your response to: Book Contest, The Record, 2850 Delorme, Sherbrooke, J1K 1A1, or 88 Ixikeside, Knowlton, JOE 1 VO, or FAX it to (819) 569-3945 or (514) 243-5155.The deadline is Tuesday, April 2, at 5 p.m.If you want both books, send in two responses. Here’s the question: Approximately how many Quebecers speak English — one, two or three million?Good luck! bring their explosive live show to Sherbrooke’s Granada Theatre on Wednesday, March 27, where they will play selections from their debut album Naveed, which is close to double-platinum (200,000 Jessie Aulis Country music pioneer Kitty Wells to play Lennoxville Country fans always welcome a celebration and this time they’re in for a major one: The original Queen of country music, Kitty Wells, is coming to the Townships April 14.Linda Sparkes, owner of Lennoxville’s Bar Wildwood and a die-hard fan of traditional country music, wanted to offer her customers something dear to her heart.“Being in the business I hear about the contre versy of the old and new country, but why can’t people just love country music for what it is?” asks Sparkes.Having Wells performing here will be like a dream come true to many country lovers.“I thought Kitty Wells coming here would be a memorable day for many people but especially for my mom,” said Sparkes.Wells’ records are loved everywhere there are country fans. She is a remarkable woman and a talented artist.Born in Nashville, Tennessee, the superstar had an average childhood as one of six children of a railroad brake-man.She learned to play guitar at 14, and at 16 met a boy named Johnny Wright who shared her interest in music.Wright would help shape her music and her life when they married after a two-year courtship. He and singer Jack Anglin formed the duo Johnny and Jack. When they began touring with their group the Tennessee Mountain Boys, Wells went with them as a singer.Stardom was bound to happen to the lady with an unpretentious, straightfoward and sincere voice that was able to reflect emotions so well.It all came with Wells' recording of “It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky-Tonk Angels”, an answer to Hank Thompson’s hit “The Wild Side Of Life”.In no time, the song climbed the charts in spite of its controversial lyrics which placed the blame for “honky-tonk angels” (loose-living women) not on God but on unfaithful men.One song and country’s first great female star was born.Throughout her career, Wells kept on singing the woman’s point of view on a variety of topics such as love, loss, infidelity and life. For a while, she kept on answering men’s hits such as Webb Pierce’s “Back Street Affair” with “Paying For That Backstreet Affair”, Hank Williams’ “Cold, Cold Heart” and “Your Cheating Heart” with “-My Cold, Cold Heart is Melted Now”.With the guidance of husband Johnny Wright and supervision of Owen Bradly, she did not lack for good material.A whole new world opened up for country female singers with Wells’ success. She was seen as a pioneer as many of her songs included “feminist” lyrics.Women loved her because she was singing out loud what they thought in silence, while men could only be charmed facing the truth from such a talented lady.“A Wedding Ring Ago”, “Ma-kin’ Believe”, “Amigo’s Guitar”, “Heartbreak USA”, “I Can’t Stop Loving You”, “Mommy For A Day” and “A Woman Half My Age” are just a few of Wells’ classics, showing the consistency of a great career.Wells was honored many times for her work, the first of which came when Tennessee Governor Frank Clement created a Tennessee Womanhood Award for her.She was also voted the number one female country artist of the year for 11 consecutive years. The country star was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1976 and she finally received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences in 1991.As a virtual institution on ‘Queen of Country Music’ Kitty Wells and her husband and son, Johnny and Bobby Wright, will help celebrate Bar Wildwood’s sixth anniversary on April 14.the Grand Ole Opry, she was given the title ‘The Queen of Country Music’.Wells’ love for her fans and her music keeps her on the road year-round.This time, her tour bus will stop in Lennoxville April 14, where she will be performing at Bar Wildwood with her husband Johnny Wright, her son Bobby and their band The Tennessee Mountain Boys.Wells will perform two shows, at 3 p.m.and 8 p.m.This event also marks the sixth anniversary of Bar Wildwood. For more information or reservations, call (819) condition Take a good look at yourself in Our Town By Sunil Mahtani LENNOXVILLE — In a Quebec increasingly preoccupied by the downsizing of businesses and the restructuring of society, with divisive groups trying to manipulate people towards their respective points of view, it can be difficult to keep focussed on what’s really important. Thus, the Bishop’s University drama department’s production of Our Town couldn’t have come at a better time.Thornton Wilder’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play about a small town and the people that inhabit it is an affecting reminder that it is the little things in life that are the most important.Although Wilder wrote the piece in the pre-World War II America of 1938, what he has to say about the human condition still resonates with truth and honesty today.“It’s about life,” said actor Alison McElwain.“It uses a small town as a metaphor to explore life.” Wilder’s play takes place in New Hampshire — in the fictional town of Grover’s Comers — but the setting could be any town in North America.“Within the town, we meet a milkman, a policeman, a doctor, the man who runs the newspaper, and various children,” said director Greg Tuck.“The play concerns itself with what on the face of it is the most ordinary things that happen to people and in that sense, Grover’s Corners is everywhere.” “It’s a universal piece,” Tuck added.“People in the Townships will recognize themselves in the play. After all, (Lennox-ville is) only 150 miles or so from where the play ostensibly takes place.” Our Town was an experimental work for its time.Wilder made the audience a part of the play by writing a narrator Dr.Gibbs (Rick Long) tries to comfort his son George (Craig MacAdam) after a tragedy marks their lives.to speak directly to them. His stage notes demand a sparse set with virtually no props to tell a story that revolves around intimate relationships.“It was a revolutionary piece of drama in its day, and I think a watershed for American dramatic literature afterwards,” said Tuck.“It’s difficult to write a play now without taking into account what Our Town did to the drama of the day.” Tuck stayed true to the playwright’s stage directions.“It’s minimal and that’s inherent to the theatrical quality of the piece,” he said, pointing to the stepladders used to represent the upstairs of neighboring homes.“Some actors are working with real props and sometimes with imaginary props. We have a character in the play named Bessie who isn’t seen at all and yet everybody will get to know her during the course of the evening.” Also, Wilder does not tell his story in a linear fashion. He jumps back and forth in time to tell the tale of rural residents George and Emily — one the son of a physician, the other the daughter of the newspaper editor — who fall in love, get married and experience one of life’s greatest trials.“The daily life of the town is dealt with in the first act, love and marriage in the second act and, as the stage manager says, ‘There’s a third act and I guess you know what that’s all about.’ The third act happens in a graveyard.” The ‘Stage Manager’ is not part of the production team, but a full-fledged character.“It’s like the play is a play and (the Stage Manager) walks in and out,” said actor Craig MacAdam.“But it’s magical in the sense that the characters don’t know they’re in a play,” said McElwain. Why did Wilder choose to stage his play in this manner? While Our Town deals with the realism of people’s daily lives and certainly could have been told in a linear manner, Wilder attempts to go beyond all that.“The play asks us to look past the objects of our life, and the realistic conceits of drama,” said Tuck.“He takes them all away and that allows the audience to focus on the truth of it all which is that in many ways, the smallest moments in our lives in the end are the most important.” In celebrating the ordinary, Our Town also pays its respects to the extraordinary.Tuck describes a favorite scene which epitomizes the play’s message.“Young Rebecca Gibbs is looking out her window on a quiet night and staring at the moon and recalls a letter she saw and she starts very small and says that it’s a letter written to Grover’s Corners, Sutton County and everytime she says another line of the address on the envelope, the world of that letter and world of the play grows and grows and grows and grows until we’ve gone to the solar system and the universe and the mind of God.” “In a nutshell, that’s what the play is asking us to realize about ourselves,” Tuck added.By allowing the audience to play, Wilder is also commenting on the place of all humans in the world. In a sense, we are all characters in the mind of God, in his great play of the human condition.McElwain and MacAdam said they gleaned much from the play.“That there’s so much to do.There’s so much you should appreciate and learn and drink in,” said McElwain.“There’s so many moments in life that go bzoop, bzoop by before you know it, like the play says, before you know it, you're 70 and you’ve been a lawyer and married for like, 70 years,” said MacAdam.“So every now and then because of doing this play, I think whatever I’m doing if I’m sitting and waiting for the bus, it will just click, I’ll say, ‘Wait a second, this is life.Enjoy it.Drink it in.’” Perhaps the greatest reminder in Our Town is, as McElwain says, to remind people that “you’re a small part of a great thing”.Our Town by Thornton Wilder, presented by the Bishop’s University drama department, takes the stage at the Studio Theatre March 27 to 31 at 8 p.m.Tickets: $7.Tel: (819) Although Thornton Wilder’s play takes place in New Hampshire — in the fictional town of Grover’s Corners — the setting could be any town in North America.George Gibbs. 6—The Record—TOWNSHIPS WEEK— March 22-29, 1996 Disney Dumbo dropping in video stores — It’s amazing how Keanu Reeves’ wooden acting technique manages to work in just the right property. Here he’s a soldier-boy returning to California from the Second World War.At the train station, he runs into a young woman in trouble (Aita-na Sanchez-Gijon).She’s pregnant, single and heading home to a stem father at their Napa Valley estate. Both she and the vineyards look gorgeous on film in the English-language debut of director Alfonso Arau (Like Water for Chocolate).Sure, it’s corny and predictable as Reeves volunteers to play her loving hubby and the couple moves from awkward social situation to true love. Also new on video: The Tie That Binds (Hollywood) — Producer David Madden must have a thing about malevolent home invaders. He’s followed up previous hits Cape Fear and The Hand That Rocks the Cradle with this thriller about a psycho couple out to retrieve the adopted daughter that was taken away from them.Keith Carradine is appropriately creepy as the deadly dad.Daryl Hannah as the mad mom hasn’t been this scary since portraying a Blade Runner replicant.Easter Screen Epics (MGM-UA) — They don’t make ’em like this any more! For the Easter holiday five seasonal epics set in the Holy Land, including a collector’s edition of 1959’s Ben-Hur.Available in both pan-and-scan and letter-boxed format, the tape includes a special documentary and collector’s booklet.Others available in letterbox for the first time include Exodus, The Greatest Story Ever Told, King of Kings and 195l’s Quo Vadis. All are digitally remastered and with original theatrical trailers. The X-Files (Fox) — The videos are out there — as inevitable as the ambiguous ending to an X-Files storyline. The first instalment of X-Files Videos offers three digitally mastered tapes, featuring six uncut episodes from the hit series’ first season, including the pilot.Series creator Chris Carter provides exclusive introductions, revealing behind-the-scenes details and anecdotes.Goosebumps (Fox) — Fox is cashing in on the cult popularity of another Made-in-Canada TV series here. The Haunted Mask provided YTV’s biggest audience ever when it aired as a special last fall to launch the youth-oriented show.A Night in Terror Tower, filmed in Toronto’s famed Casa Loma, was another Goose-bumps special and is next in line for video release.Moira Kelly and Vincent Spano adopt littie Julia Devin, not realizing their lives will be turned upside-down by two dangerous criminals in The Tie That Binds.Denis Leary and Ray Liotta are on a mission of a lifetime in Operation Dumbo Drop.ended up on many film critics’ best-of-1995 lists, and is in the running for this year’s best-picture Oscar.Babe (MCA-Universal) should not be confused with Gordy, 1995’s other but definitely inferior talking-pig film, nor should it be confused with John Goodman’s biopic of Babe Ruth! But this “tale about an unprejudiced heart” is certainly one of the most unusually designed pictures in years.Filmed in the New South Wales highlands, the farm setting looks like nothing familiar on this continent. The setting also seems long ago, yet we see modern color TVs and fax machines. The accents vary from British to flat American midwest, which also contributes to the difficulty of pinning down the setting. The voices don’t quite fit, the result of a puzzling decision to replace the Aussie voi- ces on the soundtrack with more familiar accents. So ironically even the talking animals — accomplished through computer animation of their lower jaws or beaks — have had their voices dubbed! There’s some animatronics involved, too, as well as clever stunt work.It all leaves viewers repeatedly asking, “How did they do that?” Supposedly a children’s film, Babe nevertheless departs from the saccharine world of Disney by painting an occasionally dark, realistic picture of farm life, where animals are, after all, slaughtered and eaten. There’s a distinctly antimeat, or at least anti-pork message, even though the picture is overall an idyllic portrait of the agricultural way of life.Available at a sell-through price.Mallrats (MCA-Universal) — Two high-school-grad brothers loaf around with no job and no direction.Their girlfriends dump them.So what to do?Hit the local mall (Minnesota filling in for New Jersey) with plenty of gross-out slapstick in mind and a blasting hip soundtrack for accompaniment. One could expect more from the creators of Clerks and Dazed and Confused.Mallrats has a good premise as an R-rated youth satire. It’s just that it comes across as warmed-over Animal House, with the obligatory irreverence to pompous authority, the chaotic trash-everything-take-no-prisoners finale, and even a Belushi-Bluto-type slob as court jester. Is this the best Shannen Doherty can do post-90210?At least comic-book legend Stan Lee has a refreshing cameo as himself.A Walk in the Clouds (Fox) VIDEO By John McKay Is Operation Dumbo Drop (Buena Vista) the ultimate sign that the Vietnam War healing process is truly under way? This is the first Nam film comedy (and, for the record, the second Disney film ever with the word Dumbo in it).Supposedly based on a true story, Dumbo Drop tells of a group of Yank soldiers who must appease the residents of a strategic South Vietnam village by parachuting in a pachyderm. The community’s previous elephant was killed in a battle and it might have been the Americans’ fault.Even NVA soldiers are called upon to ham it up over the endless jokes about Dumbo droppings and anti-airsickness suppositories.Though they are very able actors, Ray Liotta, Dennis Leary and Danny Glover try to yuk it up but fail to amuse, either because the war is still too sensitive an issue for laughs or it’s just a bad script.Probably the latter, since even Disney’s legion of kid fans turned this one down. It’s definitely the year of the pig as Babe, that unusual barnyard fable from Australia, Top videos The most popular videos for the period ended Daignault 819-569-9525 FAX 819-569-3945 8—The Record—TOWNSHIPS WEEK— March 22-29, 1996 MUSIC Melissa By Nancy Eng For Melissa Etheridge, taking the music to the people is what being a rock star is all about. That could explain why the raspy-voiced singer has yanked herself away from her posh Los Angeles home to play locales such as Prince George, B.C., and Sudbury, Ont.“What I do is play live and I never want people to forget that,” she said before an Edmonton concert.Because she toured extensively in the U.S.following her quintuple-platinum album Yes I Am, she decided to venture down different roads first in support of her new release Your Little Secret.Instead of just doing the Vancouver-Montreal -Toronto loop of Canada like most big acts, Etheridge decided to cover more of the country she says has “been so supportive of my career.” Her Canadian tour Etheridge takes music to fans started in Victoria and is winding its way to Saint John, N.B.Etheridge plays the Montreal Forum on March 22.The woman who’s played to a packed Madison Square Garden in New York says the size of the city she’s in isn’t a factor.“It’s only visually a little smaller and the excitement is the same if not more. They were so very kind in Prince George and it was fun, so I hope it’s something they’ll remember.” Etheridge recently completed a European tour and says her brand of no-frills rock highlighted by simple yet passionate lyrics is a harder sell there. While she’s a hit in Germany, Holland and Scandinavia, areas that traditionally embrace rock and roll, pop music along the lines of Mariah Carey is still the best-seller in many other countries. But don’t expect Etheridgi to tweak her songwriting to win over the unconverted.“I still have to make the music that’s there in me.” Etheridge, 34, became a top rocker the old-fashioned way, playing clubs for years until she got a recording deal, then criss-crossing North America to promote her tunes. With five albums behind her, she’s won two Grammy awards, sung with girlhood hero Bruce Springsteen on MTV Unplugged and been on the cover of Rolling Stone. But Etheridge isn’t pulling any star trips or idly basking in her success.Melissa Etheridge is the final musical act scheduled to perform at the (old) Montreal Forum on Friday, March 22, at 8 p.m.Tickets cost $35-45 and a few are available at Admission outlets.Tel: (819) 822-9692 or 820-1000.Melissa Etheridge.the size of the city isn’t a factor.Fiddle Fusion: He has played with musical talents such as Paul Simon, Edie Brickell and The Chieftains, and now Cape Breton fiddling star Ashley Maclsaac is touring the country opening for American rock diva Melissa Etheridge.Their latest stop is the Montreal Forum on Friday, March 22, the last musical show in the historic old building.Maclsaac is riding the wave of success his latest album, Hi, How Are You Today?, has brought him.More than 100,000 copies of the album have been bought in Canada alone and Maclsaac has begun turning people around the world onto his striking fusion of traditional fiddle music with pop, rock and disco beats.By all accounts, the 21-year-old, who recently won two Junos for his fiddling prowess, should bring the house down with his rollicking band The Kitchen Devils.Tickets are available at all Admission outlets.— Sunil Mahtani.Whispers work for Junkies Some reviews of recent CD releases: Lay it Down Cowboy Junkies (Geffen) The success of the Cowboy Junkies has rested on one simple principle for more than a decade: whispers speak louder than shouts. With the release last week of their fifth album, Lay it Down, the Junkies have again turned to the proven formula that’s helped them sell more than three million records worldwide.Margo Timmins’ haunting soprano, as light as a butterfly’s breath, wafts through all 13 tracks in the same melancholy style that marked the Junkies’ breakthrough 1989 album, The Trinity Sessions. The influence of producer John Keane (REM, Indigo Girls) is subtle yet stylish. On Common Disaster, for example, the Junkies’ guitars are more jangly than usual and Timmins’ dulcet voice almost soars. The result has been ceaseless radio airplay for the past month. But that hit single isn’t typical of the remaining tracks.Lay it Down, like The Trinity Sessions, is mainly devoted to a more intimate, languorous groove. While some might complain about the album’s lullaby qualities, others will relish its effectiveness as a soothing sedative.Don’t bother trying to decipher the lyrics.Just lean back, close your eyes and let Timmins’ whispy voice put you in a spacey trance.Michael MacDonald (CP) The Record Spins Heat: Music From the Motion Picture (Warner) Leaving Las Vegas: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (1RS) For some reason, movie soundtracks can rarely stand on their own merits before dying in some obscure record shop rack.Take Heat, a thick, aural soup of synthesizers and occasional guitar prowess that makes it sound like a bad Pink Floyd cover album.Peter Brook’s Ultramarine is nothing more than The Wall with a new coat of paint.Armenia, by Einsturzende Neubau-ten, is a baffling clot of instruments, animal noises, circular saws and disembodied screaming.Still, Brian Eno and U2 combo for an intriguing Always Forever Now, while Moby’s haunting God Moving Over the Face of The Waters wins for best song.Simplicity often wins the day, as Sting and company prove with the recording from director Mike Figgis’s masterpiece Leaving Las Vegas.Sting’s Angel Eyes opens a brillant collection, interrupted by well-placed snippets of film banter and jazzy segues by pianist Dave Hartley, drummer Ian Thomas and saxophone maestro Ray Warleigh, among others.Don Henley’s gravelly voice turns up on Come Rain or Come Shine, and Sting reappears on My One and Only Love and It’s a Lonesome Old Town. Finally, with the raucous, road-warrior jangle of the Pal-ladinos doing I Won’t Be Going South For a While, Leaving Las Vegas serves as a poignant reminder that not all soundtracks are created equal.James McCarten (CP) Marry Me Jane Marry Me Jane (Sony) After listening to this self-titled debut album, it's easy to see why the producers of the soon-to-be-released film If Lucy Fell chose to include nine of the band’s songs on its soundtrack.Amanda Kravat’s soft, high voice manages to be both innocent and powerful at once, creating a Rickie Lee Jones cum The Breeders combination of raunch and sultriness. While Marry Me Jane is definitely rock, the band’s music ranges in diversity from emotion-laden songs like Positive to the rhythmic Candy to the guitar-heavy Tabitha spliced with raw spoken word.Marry Me Jane undoubtedly has an up-to-the-moment Generation X-influenced musical world view. But the band’s innovation and vibrancy should give them a well-deserved longevity.Samantha Sacks (CP) The Record—TOWNSHIPS WEEK— March 22-29, 1996—9 TV WEEK SATURDAY MORNING 6:00® FAMILY MATTERS ® BUGS BUNNY & TWEETY © IRIS, THE
