Fascists feed on fear.Outstanding performances mark classic musical By Sharon McCully MONTREAL — “If I were a rich man.”.Veteran actor Theodore Bikel daydreamed of a better life more than a thousand times in Fiddler On The Roof, but audiences never tire of hearing him do it.The Vienna-born performer has brought the simple dreams of the poor Russian farmer Tevye to the stage in 1300 different performances of the musical since 1964, each time touching a familiar chord with spectators. It was an encore presentation for many in Tuesday’s opening-night crowd at Place des Arts for the first show in its Broadway Classics series, and some couldn’t resist mouthing For the Record Tevye’s unforgettable adages and biblical interpretations before they were said aloud, as though sharing family secrets. This timeless musical comedy is a reminder that strength is often found in adversity, and without the love of family and traditions, we are as fragile as a fiddler on a roof.It tells the story of Tevye, a poor Jewish farmer and father of five daughters, on the eve of the Russian Revolution in 1905.As a good father, Tevye wants to find husbands for his daughters, but learns that despite a father’s best efforts to find suitable suitors, love follows its own path.ENDEARING His hilarious repartees with God — seeking and giving advice — and extravagant attempts to gain the upper hand with the six women in his life, are quite enough to endear Tevye to his audience. But his rich, resonating voice, the elflike twinkle in his eye and cle-ver asides cement the relationship.Clearly, Bikel has become Tevye over time and has mastered the role of the browbeaten husband at the mercy of his authoritarian wife and the adoring daughters he is trying to get married off.His 25-year marriage to Golde, played by Rebecca Hoodwin, is punctuated with the hallmarks of any relations- mr, 7 ROYAL BA INK Season Sponsor •T?Quebec's Longest Running English-Language Theatre Theatre 1996 Season DEHD Golde, who must give up the thing she loves most — her daughter. While Tevye sanc-tionned the marriage of two of his daughters to men chosen out of love, he could not abide by his third daughter’s heartbreaking decision to marry a Gentile. The villagers of Anatevka gave their rousing endorsement to the marriage of Tevye’s eldest daughter Tzeitel to the timid tailor Motel, skillfully played by James Kali, and sanctionned Hodel’s decision to marry the radical professor Perchik played by Michael Oberlander. But Chava’s decision to marry a young Russian was too shameful.OUTSTANDING The entire cast gave outstanding performances with powerful singing and sound delivery. But it was Bikel as Tevye that most will want to visit again and again.Bikel joined the Habimah Theatre at 19 and a year later co-founded the Israel Theatre. He graduated with honors from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London and has worked with theatrical giants Sir Lawrence Olivier, who directed his performance in A Streetcar Named Desire, and Peter Ustinov in The Love of Four Colonels. In addition to his theatrical roles, Bikel has starred in 35 films, made numerous guest appearances on popular television shows and has recorded 20 albums. He is at home on the great stages of the world and will be calling Montreal home through June 16.Fiddler On The Roof continues at Montreal’s Place des Arts through with brown belt and brown dockers that actor Alan Fawcett sports on the upcoming TV show My Hometown is no accident.Neither are the red-and-white checkered shirt or flushed pants Michele Femey dons for the series currently being filmed in Coaticook.Indeed, everything from the clothing and sets to the lighting is part of producer-director Jean Mercier’s vision of bright, positive programming.Helping to bring this vision to life are two ex-Townshippers Robyn Badger and Andrea Rittenhouse, assistants to the art director and wardrobe mistress.Badger, 30, decorates all the sets for the show. The Montrealer who grew up in Lennox-ville said it’s easy working with someone who knows what he wants.“Jean always wants bright colors,” she said from the set.“You know you’ve got to pick a lot of reds and greens and yellows and blues, so it’s fun.” Badger’s father taught at Bishop’s College School in Len-noxville and he and her mother, brother and grandfather attended Bishop’s University. Her grandparents owned the Sherbrooke Hotel, which burned down and the space was most recently St.Hubert.Her nephew is Thomas Badger, “the best juggler in the world,” she said, while her claim to fame was as a little league baseball star, playing for the Lennoxville Yankees and Sher-Lenn All-Star Team.Sherbrooke-born Andrea Rittenhouse spent many years 99 Days of Summer By Sunil Mahtani at Bishop’s University — in diapers.“My father was David Rittenhouse, a professor at Bishop’s and he ran Festival Lennoxville,” said the student at Concordia University.“I’m afraid I was a university brat,” she laughed. Her uncle Jonathan is currently a professor at Bishop’s.Rittenhouse’s job on the set is helping to orchestrate the costumes for the day.“We’re working with primary colors, that’s our palette, our signature,” said the 26-year-old.While in the Townships, Rittenhouse is taking up residence at her parents home in North Hatley.“It’s fabulous here,” she said enthusiastically. And the town of Maple Wood, er, Coaticook, is happy to have them. Here’s your Days of Summer list for the following week: Friday, June 14 — Day 8: star. The second exhibit at the new Musée des Beaux-Arts in Sherbrooke begins with the vernissage at 3:30 p.m.It’s an historical show on sacred objects and Ozias Leduc. While there, if you haven’t checked out the retrospective exhibit on My Hometown sets up shop in Coaticook.j jmm By Sunil Mahtani COATICOOK — After more than a year of trying to raise the funds needed to shoot their TV series, Mercier Film producers learned one important lesson.“Talking about it and doing it are very different things,” said producer Normand McKay who, along with writer-director Jean Mercier, flogged the pilot episode of My Hometown to Canadian and international buyers before they were able to give the series a green light.Currently being shot in Coaticook, McKay said the modestly budgeted $3.5 million series — 13 episodes at $265,000 each — nevertheless took “a hell of a lot of time” to finance.“We didn’t want to go to (government agencies) like Telefilm or SODEC, so we’re doing it with YTV (the Youth Channel) and Tele-Metropole (TVA) and the cable production fund,” he explained.TVA, which is also the show’s distributor, has confirmed interest in 26 episodes; YTV will decide on the basis of the first few whether or not to take another 13.YTV will begin airing the English-language show on August 16.“We definitely want to go for the 26 right now, and we hope the first few will help sell YTV the next 13,” said McKay.“When you’re on the interna- tional market, 26 is the magic number.A lot of the guys want quantity. In Europe, there’s over 150 new stations. In South America, there’s 120 new stations in the last couple of years. They need programming to fill that, so they want quality, but they also want quantity. Some markets, like China, they ask you if you have 130 before they ask you what your program is.” McKay said the series could not have been possible without the pilot taped here last summer. He said it made a huge difference in selling the series at the annual Marche Internatio- nal de la Programmation (MIP) in Cannes, France, where in the spring and the fall, programmers from around the globe converge to buy shows for their stations.“(At one) we only had the script, and they’re not going to read it.When you go to a market with 10,000 people, they’re not going to start reading. They want to see a quick demo, they want to see images. They want to get an idea and feel for the show.” McKay said after the pilot, it was a completely different story.‘We were running after peo- ple in October and this April we had people coming to the booth,” he said with a smile. In attendance were 10,000 people, 2500 companies, 700 TV stations and the competition was fierce. They got takers in the German distributor Betataurus and a large company in France, with others in negotiation. With headway being made in Europe, McKay said the other major market is, of course, the United States.“The States is a tough market to crack. They tell you, ‘If you sell it to us that will put a stamp on your product, that it’s accepted in the States and you’ll be able to sell it elsewhere in the world — and that’s why we’re not going to pay much money for it’,” McKay said with a frown.“We’re not a charity. We have a good product, we have good scripts, we have good stories, that’s worth a certain price and we’re not going to go under that.” That price is between $20-to-25,000 U.S.per episode, and McKay said the stations that have bought it believe this kind of programming is worth the cost.“Children’s programming is a good niche,” said McKay.“It’s one of the ones that lasts the longest. The market regenerates itself every four or five years. And there’s no violence in it.It’s a good, emotional show.” McKay said many programmers commented on its positive outlook.“There’s a lot of action-packed movies, a lot of series where kids are a little bit screwed up,” said McKay.“One comment we had from World Vision, which is the producer of Melrose Place and Beverly Hills 9021.G, they said, ‘Finally a show where’s it’s okay to be a good kid’.’ For 13 weeks, the production is calling Coaticook its hometown.Twenty-four trucks and cars will roam the town setting up various locations for the show, with a firm promise that everything will be put back to normal at the end of the day.And the troupe is not simply trampling on the Townships for its own greedy designs. The economic benefits to Coaticook will be considerable.“This year we’re going to spend more than $200,000,” said McKay.“Just the motels and the food is going to cost over a hundred thousand bucks, so add all the per diems, at night we give them money for dinner, some of them have rented houses for the whole summer, the shopping, stationary, photocopies.” Sounds like the Mercier Film team will be welcome here anytime.‘You just learn how to do it or you don’t last’ Intense TV shoot challenges Hometown actors Jamie Elman, Chantal Leblanc Everett, Alan Fawcett, Jay Baru chel, Ken Munday and Michele Ferney star in My Hometown.% tf By Sunil Mahtani COATICOOK — A visibly upset teenager bursts through the front door and storms up the stairs. He is quickly followed by another, but before he can make his escape, his parents stop him in his tracks. The mother is sympathetic; the father stern. He scolds his son after some inappropriate behavior, and the kid — on the verge of tears — tries to explain his actions. This emotional scene, for the second episode of the upcoming TV series My Hometown, is just a couple of minutes long, yet it took more than two hours to tape on Monday at La Brise des nuits bed and breakfast in Coaticook.Ahh, the heady world of film production, a time-intensive process where the same scene is shot over and over again from various angles with a single camera. It is challenging for all involved in the process, but particularly for the actors, who must get into character for each retake. How do they hang on to the emotions needed for the scene?“When you find out, just tell me,” joked Alan Fawcett, the Montreal actor who portrays the father in My Hometown.“I don’t really know how to do it, so I’m always wondering.I’d like to find out from somebody who does know how to do it.” Co-star Michele Ferney also claimed ignorance of the mental process required to act in film and TV.‘You just learn how to do it or you don’t last,” Fawcett said more seriously. Both have learned to do it well.Toronto actress Ferney said she works mainly in film and is enjoying taping her first TV series.“Continuous work on a series, it’s great for an actor.Plus it’s really nice working here, because we get to work on location in this really nice town.” Fawcett works in both French and English and has extended his talents into writing shows as well.“I’m writing a script for this series and I’m doing a series in French.Right now, I have to leave and go up to Ottawa and be assassinated on Parliament Hill for Lobby, a new French series for TVA.” “We offered to assassinate him here, but he didn’t go for it,” said the perky Ferney. Before Fawcett left to get bumped off, he said an odd feature of the production of My Hometown is working around the schedules of the young performers.“We have to make sure the kids don’t work too late,” he said.“Sometimes the kids get wrapped before you finish your scene so you end up acting the scene to somebody’s hands.Actually, we’re going to do that right now.” With that, the TV couple ran back into the house to tape the scene again without their “son” Jay Baruchel, the 14-year-old Montrealer who plays the teen whose adventures are the focus of the series.Ready to hit the road with his mom Robyne after a 10-hour day, Baruchel said this acting stuff is a piece of cake.“It’s easy, but very tiring,” he lamented.“Usually by the end of the day, I’m pooped. My mom is very nice, so she goes out and gets take-out.” He admitted it is difficult not to break up during a serious scene.“It’s hard not to smile.Whenever I do something really strong when everybody is being really serious, it’s hard not to smile.” Robyne said the reason her son finds being emotional and flying off the handle so easy is because “he’s been doing it for years!” Baruchel said Thomas is much like himself.“He’s a really intelligent kid, but he’s not obsessed with being cool and that stuff,” said the confident actor.“He gets into trouble a lot but he doesn’t do it on purpose, and he tries to get himself out of it.” The ambitious youngster firmly states he doesn’t plan on acting his entire life.“I want to be a director and a writer,” he said.Watch out world, this bird is flying high.
