A million million spermatozoa All of them alive Out of their cataclysm one poor Noah Dare hope to survive.Aldous Huxley.Life do get complicated, don’t it?The federal parliament is currently considering a bill making it illegal to sell sperm.Shucks! And I was hoping to work my way through university. In all honesty, most of us have been trying to give the bothersome little wigglers away since puberty. We’ve spent great sums persuading Who's Who By Tadeusz Letarte people to take them — and finding damn few takers at that. The bill is aimed at getting a choke-hold on the new reproductive technology before it gets too big to handle.Buying, selling or trading in human sperm, eggs or embryos could fetch you 10 years in the slammer and a $500,000 fine.It will remain perfectly legal to give it away for free. The notion that it’s morally reprehensible to sell what it is okay to give for nothing strikes me as an odd ethic for a free enterprise society but there you are.If this world were sane, it would be men riding side-saddle.It will also become illegal to rent a womb from a surrogate mother, to maintain a human embryo in an artificial womb, to alter an embryo in the Petrie dish so as to affect future gene-rations, to clone human embryos, and to retrieve eggs or embryos from cadavers or fetuses and to create human-animal hybrids.(That puts an end to Mermaids, Minotaurs, Centaurs, Satyrs and Sphinxes). The bloke who introduced this bill declared it aimed at a safe health system “consistent with Canadian Values.” A Toronto fertility physician called the legislation “narrowminded” and predicted desperate couples and fertility clinics would evade the law by importing eggs and sperm from the U.S.where free enterprise still reigns.Don’t cuckoos operate that way?Won’t we risk being consistent with Canadian values by getting shouldered out of the nest by loudmouthed Americans? The whole thing strikes me as premature and another indi- cation that elected representatives feel compelled to outlaw something and control something else to justify their election expenses. You and I would do the same if we were unlucky enough to be sent to Ottawa. We might even come straight out and alter that fundamental concept of individual liberty which says everything is allowed unless expressly forbidden, to read “E-verything is forbidden if not specifically allowed.” Then we could issue licences to breathe, temporary permits to look at the sky.Think of the power we’d have. And power is an aphrodisiac! Canadian actor Henry Czerny is on a misson By Rob Salem TORONTO (CP) — “Good afternoon, Mr.Phelps .” It seemed oddly familiar, transcribing this interview, listening to Henry Czerny’s lush enunciation as the tape slowly unspooled I half expected that, five seconds after he finished talking, it would dissolve, Mission: Impossible-style, in a wispy puff of smoke.Canadian actor Czerny, who is the new voice of the IMF team in Mission: Impossible, the summer blockbuster movie, says he can relate.“This film has so profoundly affected me,” he deadpans, “that now I only speak into tape recorders.” What child of the late ’60s or early 70s didn’t, at one time or another, get together with friends to plan out their own, schoolyard-scale version of a Mission: Impossible TV caper?“One of the reasons to go for the part was certainly to do that voice,” Czerny happily concedes.“As a kid I remember very distinctly standing around with a group of my contemporaries and going “Your mission, should you decide to accept it.’ So it was a thrill to be able to do it in a feature film.Kind of kitschy, but fun.” Mission: Impossible is Czerny’s second major Hollywood feature, after playing Harrison Ford’s evil CIA nemesis in 1994’s A Clear And Present Danger.Mission: Impossible has him rejoining the agency, though this time playing opposite Tom Cruise, and somewhat more sympathetically. So much so that he felt confident enough to actually visit the real CIA headquarters despite any residual ill will that may have resulted from his earlier portrayal.“They were actually very kind,” he says.“They could have been quite mean to me, iiOK V ROYAL BANK Season Sponsor Quebec's Longest Running English-Language Theatre • iff™] Opening Gala TONIGHT! Theatre celebrates “Willkommen, bienvenue, welcome.” As the Master of Ceremonies saluted patrons to the Kit Kat Club in pre-Nazi Berlin in Cabaret, I could not have hoped for a more pleasing introduction to Theatre Lac Brome than its 1992 production of the musical. It has always been one of my all-time favorites and the Knowlton theatre’s take on it was dazzling.Since then, just as the patrons of the Kit Kat Club adopted that institution as their home, Theatre Lac Brome has been like a home away from home for the thousands who visit it each year. This year the theatre is celebrating its 10th anniversary, amazing when one considers just how far it’s come in such a short span of time.Since the dynamic Emma Stevens formed Theatre Lac Brome in 1986, presenting shows at the Glen Mountain Ski Resort Lodge and Lake-view Hotel before eventually moving into its permanent home in 1988, it has grown and developed from an eight-week summer theatre with nine weeks of amateur production into a year-round cultural centre with 13 weeks of summertime theatre, five to six special events in the spring and 20 weeks of amateur plays. It has spawned a number of amateur theatre troupes and helped transform Brome Lake into one of the most culturally 99 Days of Summer By Sunil Mahtani diverse and exciting areas of the Townships. There’s no question it has made a valuable contribution to English-language culture in the province, but it has also celebrated cultural diversity and reflected Quebec society as a whole through its productions. The importance of language and depicting Canadian and Quebeçois culture is now always a high priority as current artistic director Nicholas K.Pynes selects his seasons.Pynes consistently banks on artistic integrity over commercial concerns — and almost always wins.In fact, Theatre Lac Brome will eliminate its once-massive debt this year.Few theatres can boast balan- Jenny Wright, Cathy Richards, Ari Snyder, Robert Burns and Jacques Basko in Cole (1993).Sheena Larkin, Cary Lawrence, Ellen Cohen and Bruce Dinsmore in I Hate Hamlet (1994).The Record—TOWNSHIPS WEEK‘S June- 2ff- July S, 1996-^3 10 years of arts and culture Jane Wheeler and Jocelyne Zucco in De Beaux Gestes et Beautiful Deeds (1995).Bill Rowat in 7 Stories (1992).A 4k' Jane Wheeler and Jocelyne Zucco in De ced books as well as artistry and a loyal audience willing to take chances.Pynes doesn’t usually give in to typical summer theatre fare.Even the current Scoops, perhaps the most commercial show he has programmed since 1982’s Shirley Valentine, has more to it being as a Canadian play that voices national concerns. Some journalists wait like vultures for a theatre to falter so they can sweep down and tear a production to shreds.I’m not saying that’s never going to happen — I haven’t seen Scoops yet! — but due to the unflinching dedication and high ideals of those who work at Theatre Lac Brome, it hasn’t happened very often in 10 years.Sure, Theatre Lac Brome has had a couple of near-misses commercially (Rock & Roll did not entrance many who saw it), but certainly not as many as most theatres in the province.Like the mysterious man in the bowler hat who is about to step off the ledge of a building in the Canadian play 7 Stories (mounted at the theatre in 1992), Pynes has stepped off the populist ledge, but rather than falling, he has flown — and he takes thousands on his trip each year.Pynes and Stevens have also displayed a keen knack of selecting the very best among the crop of anglophone actors who’ve remained in the province. Thanks to Theatre Lac Brome, we’ve gotten to know the work of such talents as Jenny Wright, Felicia Schulman, Jane Wheeler, Bruce Dinsmore, Pierre Lenoir, Susan Glover, Ellen Cohen, Robert Burns and the current crop of bright lights, including Neil Kroetsch, Howard Bilerman and Stephen Beauregard.Of course, none of this could’ve happened without the loyal support of residents and local business people who have given their time and money to ensure the theatre’s continued survival.Through outstanding professional seasons, dynamic amateur players and inventive special events, Theatre Lac Brome has challenged and entertained all those who’ve passed through its doors.May it do so for many more years to come. Here’s your Days of Summer list for the following week: Friday, June 28 — Day 22.Before you head out for a night on the town, have an early barbecue. For a change, try minced turkey instead of beef, and vegetarian dogs instead of the usual. It’s healthier and it tastes just as good.Saturday, June 29 — Day 23: The blues has hit Sherbrooke big-time.Head to downtown Sherbrooke and you can’t miss it.It’s in the bars, on outdoor stages, everywhere you look, people are swinging to the blues.Free shows include Toronto’s Rita Chiarelli outdoors, Townships native Marty Hall at the Contact bar and Sylvie Choquette and the Magic Wandas at Ronnie’s.Enjoy.Sunday, June 30 — Day 24: Take a drive to your favorite park with picnic lunch and spend the day relaxing.Monday, July 1 — Day 25: Celebrate Canada Day at one of the many parties happening around the Townships, and end it off with a free concert by the Orchestre de chambre de l’Estrie at Sherbrooke’s Place de la Cite, behind the courthouse.Tuesday, July 2 — Day 26: At the library in picturesque North Hatley, see the waterco-lor exhibits by Gilian Angus C é and Barbara Matthews between 10 a.m.and 12:30 p.m.Wednesday, July 3 — Day 27: Is is time for ice-cream yet?I’m an eternal optimist and if there’s one thing that says summer, it’s cool ice-cream on a warm day.If weather permits, have a scoop.Frozen yogurt’s yummy too.Thursday, July 4 — Day 28: Call up an American friend and wish them a happy Indepen-dance Day, or just phone a friend you haven’t spoken to for a while and make plans for the weekend.Remember, take it easy this summer.99 Days of Summer is a celebration of the season and the upcoming 100th anniversary of The Record as ardaily newspaper.Ai g Picnic Come to the Sunnymead Picnic July 6th, 1996 Activities Scout's Breakfast: 9 A.M.Townshippers’ Battle of the Bands: from 2 P.M.to 7 P.M.Children's Games, all day Sunnymead Cup Soccer Final (between parents and children) Tickets: Adults: $7 / Student: $5 Family: $25 Children under 10: free Included in the price all activities and parking! attention to: the debut by 13-year-old singing sensation LeAnn Rimes.Rimes was born in Jackson, Mississippi, and curently resides in Garland, Texas, and she has a set of pipes that rivals the power of Patsy Cline. With her wailing, retro-sounding ballad “Blue” shooting up the charts, chances are good this teenager will make an impact when her MCGCurb album hits the streets in July. The song was originally written for diva Cline, who died before she could record it.The song’s writer, Dallas disc jockey Bill Mack, held on to it until he met Rimes and decided she had the right voice to sing it.If the whole album keeps the promises of the first single, the teenager is in for a skyrocketing career. For those who are hooked on Internet, Country Connection now has its own Web site where you The Record—TOWNSHIPS WEEK— June 28-July 5, 1998—5 COVER________________ Comedy about small-town newspaper set in Brome Lake ZJm mm PUBLICITY HOUNDS Neil Kroetsch, Stephen Beauregard and Anik Matem play are three publicityseeking hounds who turn up at the newspaper demanding to see the editor.By Sunil Mahtani KNOWLTON — Theatre Lac Brome artistic director Nicholas K.Pynes has been programming plays that reflect Canadian and Quebeçois culture for years. This time, he’s gone even further.Scoops, the theatre’s 10th anniversary season opener, is a comic play adapted for the Townships.Written by Dave Carley, it pokes fun at small-town life through the eccentric personalities who work and visit the office of the Kashabog Herald (circulation 1,700).Set in a small Ontario town, Pynes has re-located it to the Townships, ‘somewhere between Bromont and Knowl-ton’.Peppered with local references, the show should provoke many knowing laughs during its three-week run, through July 8.‘IT’S CANADIAN’ “It’s Canadian, it’s the Townships,” enthused Pynes during rehearsals this week.“It’s a funny little play.It reads and plays like a radio drama. It’s not a knee-slapper, it’s not a farce. There’s good world play.People will like it in an amusing way.” It is also perhaps the most commercial play Pynes has programmed at the theatre since Shirley Valentine in 1992.“Last year, somebody asked me why I was compelled to program culture and why couldn’t we just have entertainment,” Pynes said wiyly. For a director who prides himself on the artistic, challen-ging works he presents (remember ’93s On The Verge and ’92s 7 Stories?), this seems like quite a turnaround. But Howard Bilerman and Neil Kroetsch.idealistic young editor clashes with town minister.“The play is funny, it’s taking the mickey out of the situation one finds in the play,” said Beauregard.“It’s a smalltown play performed in a small town with tongue firmly planted in cheek.” Beauregard, who plays the town pharmacist, returns to Theatre Lac Brome after seven years, when he starred in Noel Neil Kroetsch and Anik Matern.play peppered with local references.Pinchpenny Phantom of the Opera) and if it looks realistic, well it should.“All the office props are Sonia’s, they’re from the theatre,” said Beauregard.“She works on stage during the day.All the filing cabinets are full of paper and files from the theatre.During rehearsals, when Emma was on stage pulling things out of the cabinets and tearing them up, Nicholas was there yelling, ‘Stop’.” Neil Kroetsch, Howard Bilerman, Anik Matern, Emma Stevens and Stephen Beauregard star in Scoops.RECORD PHOTOS: PERRY BEATON Pynes said even Scoops is an atypical choice.“It’s not tried and true, nobody’s heard of it, and I never would’ve programmed it if it wasn’t a Canadian play,” Pynes said, adding it deals with issues Canadians are familiar with.“We take a dig at the Church, we take a dig at the CBC, we take a dig at government grants, censorship, small-town life, licentiousness — all in a very broad comic way.” It also deals with the nature of news versus filler and advertising, age-old questions all newspapers face.EMMA STEVENS Appearing in the first production of the theatre’s 10th anniversary season (in actuality its 11th season) is the woman who started it all, Emma Stevens, Theatre Lac Brome’s founder and first artistic director.Stevens plays the realistic assistant to the paper’s new idealistic young editor, played by Howard Bilerman.“She comes from the small town. She’s a little eccentric,” said Stevens.“She’s seen many editors come and go through the Herald and she wants to get rid of this one.So she cooks up a plan.” Bilerman, who last appeared at Theatre Lac Brome in the 1994 production Rock & Roll, said he always enjoying working in Knowlton.“It’s exciting to do theatre here because the community is so supportive,” he said.“You go to the store and everyone is talking about the play.”.Coward’s Private Lives— with both Stevens and Kroetsch, who is the minister in Scoops.Making her debut at the theatre is Matern, playing country-and-western singer Sue-Bob.The set was designed by Jean-Charles Martel (The Pynes’ strong commitment to telling Canadian stories has been recognized by the Canada Council, which has aided the theatre through funding for the last two years.Canadian stories are also told in two more plays this season: the drama Desire, by Michel Marc Bouchard — in its English-language world premiere — and the musical play Disputes Of One Kind Or Another, which tells the tale of Donald Morrison, the Megantic Outlaw and was written by Pynes and Edward S.Herkes.Scoops continues at Theatre Lac Brome through July 8.Performances take place from Wednesdays to Saturdays at 8 p.m.with a 2 p.m.matinee on Thursdays.Tickets: $10-$20.To reserve, call (514) 242-2270.Scoops set to make locals laugh More community news & views coming your way.Read The Record every day! Record 6—The Record—TOWNSHIPS WEEK— June 28-JuIy 5, 199R MUSIC George By Gerard Dee Special to the Record GEORGE MICHAEL: Older The best professional decision that Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou made was deciding to use George Michael as his stage name. His second best decision was to pursue a solo career, realizing that being half of Wham! wouldn’t help him be considered a serious artist.Michael also made other choices that have profoundly affected his career. His decision to leave Sony was one of them. The other has to do with his art. After scoring a commercial coup with his debut solo project, Faith, Michael decided to go in a different direction. He replaced the pop wizardry of that album with a more introspective sound on Listen Without Prejudice Vol.I.Instead of sexy innuendoes like “-Father Figure,” Michael decided to strike a more melancholy note with songs like “Praying For Time.” His latest album, Older, could easily have been Listen Without Prejudice Vol.II.since it continues Michael’s soul searching and exploration of jazzy melodies and sophisticated pop.Previewed by the single “Jesus To A Child,” Older is, for the most part, a collection of slower tracks. But there are some exceptions. His latest release, “Fast Love”, builds on a sample of Patrice Rushen’s 1982 hit “Forget Me Nots.” The song is an about-face for Michael, who took great care to stress that “I Want Your Sex” was about monogamy. On the contrary, “-Fast Love” is about satisfying momentary needs with no strings attached. Two other uptempo tracks highlight important issues: “S-tar People” criticizes those who worship the almighty dollar, while “Spin That Wheel” tackles the issue of infidelity in a relationship. But the bulk of the material here is slower, somber, thoughtful. Most notably, the title track seems to make note that this is Michael’s first studio album in six years and yes, time has passed. But in Michael’s case, it’s allowed him to become not just older, but wiser.KE: I Am The first thing that struck me about Ke was the artist’s vocal delivery. His emotive, wavering voice had me checking the album to make sure that this really was a man.But then, that seems to be Ke’s whole point: Defying description.Michael’s Older — and wiser The Record Spins On his debut album I Am, Ke’s sound reminds me of Queen at times, and at others, The Cure or Enya, and then of no one in particular.Ke’s music could have been influenced by any of these artists or none because, ultimately, his sound is all his own.A blend of folk and acoustic pop, all with some dance elements thrown in, Ke goes from the somber “I Think It’s Time” to an introspective look at lost love on “Will I Ever Dream” and the haunting “I Don’t Want To Go,” an energetic song about the struggle for life in the face of AIDS.Mixed into Ke’s musical storytelling are sprinklings of Middle Eastern instrumentation, rousing choral backgrounds and, most strikingly, Ke’s vocal range, which varies so much at certain points that you wonder if it’s the same artist throughout the album. This is definitely music for lovers of experimental pop.And this is clearly an artist who’s lyrical ambitions are only exceeded by his constantly unexpected vocal style.KIRK FRANKLIN & THE FAMILY: Whatcha Lookin’ 4 The sound of gospel music has become much more contemporary in recent years. The path was paved by the likes of BeBe & CeCe Winans and The Sounds of Blackness, acts that married gospel themes and harmonies with R&B rhythms. But now even the cornerstone of the gospel industry, the mass choirs, have begun to move closer to an urban sound. And none have done so more successfully than Kirk Franklin & The Family. When their self-titled debut album went platinum three years ago, it was a revelation: Franklin had achieved mass appeal by making gospel “cool.” Aimed at the younger generation, he led an army of heavenly voices through a combination of standards and origi-nal compositions, all submerged in a distinctive urban flavor. The new album ups the ante, adding more hip hop beats into the mix.Recorded live at the Calvary Temple in Dallas, Whatcha Lookin’ 4 captures the real energy of gospel, an energy that can only be truly tapped with active audience participation.Mind you, Franklin and Co.work for the feedback. Two of ¦ George Michael.Older is slower, somber, thoughtful.the album’s most telling cuts, “-Melodies From Heaven” and the title track, show the group’s diversity.Available in both original and remix form on the album, the former track grooves on the adult-oriented urban tip, the latter rocks as hard as any hip-hop jam. Both ignite the crowd into a musical fervor. But as contemporary as their sound is, this isn’t subtle gospel: Franklin makes no bones about his spiritual convictions, so this is not for the religiously skittish.Likewise, gospel purists may not be totally comfortable with this choir’s modern methods. But for those who love powerful voices and an equally strong message of hope, give Franklin a listen and find out what all the joyful noise is about.BROOKS & DUNN: Boderline I’ve always thought country music was something like old shoe: Dependable, comfortable and certainly an acquired taste. It’s earned a reputation for dependability by sustaining a loyal fan base despite waves of ever-changing musical tastes. It’s a comfortable musical genre: No raging guitars, relentless beats or constantly aggressive lyrics.Yet despite these qualities, country remains a selective musical choice, having never sustained mainsteam popularity for any length of time. This, despite the fact that artists like Garth Brooks, John Michael Montgomery and, more recently, Shania Twain have achieved mainstream acceptance.Still, these artists are the exception, which makes the auspicious debut of Brooks & Dunn’s Borderline all the more noteworthy. It entered Billboards album chart at No.5.Much of the credit for this feat goes to lead single “My Maria,” an instantly infectious tale of reassured love and one of a number of uptempo tracks on the set.“Mama Don’t Get Dressed Up For Nothing,” will have the crowd line dancin’ to lines like “I’m like money to burn and nothing to lose,” and “Red Neck Rhythm & Blues” will easily maintain that momentum. Not that it’s all about a party; no country album would be complete without tracks like “One Heartache At A Time” and “Why Would I Say Goodbye.” To their credit, Brooks & Dunn write the kind of music you don’t have to be a country fan to enjoy. So if country is your thing or you’re thinking of trying something different, Borderline is the kind of album that won’t offend your senses, and it may even soothe your soul.SWV: New Beginning When SWV roared onto the scene in 1992 with It’s About Time, the only real competition for this female trio was En Vogue. These Sisters With Voi- ces distinguished themselves by countering the glamorous En Vogue image with one of ordinary girls from around the way who could sing. And the public responded to the concept, not to mention some of the best in-the-pocket grooves since En Vogue.“I’m So Into You” and ‘Weak” were two of the most played urban jams of the year, propelling the album to double platinum. Now, a whopping four years later, the girls have decided to do it again.Problem is, there’s more quality out there now: Xscape, Brownstone and TLC are three examples of female vocal combos that have paid off in recent years. All of which makes the comeback trail harder for the Sisters. With New Beginning, SWV attack the sophomore quandary with questionable results. To start, there’s nothing here that instantly jumps out like on the first set.Instead, the group has delivered music that’s polished, but lacks distinction. Now there are some jams, most notably lead single “You’re The One,” which should be boppin’ along, both in original and remixed forms, all summer long. And the pop leanings of “It’s All About You” are so infectious it screams for radio attention. But besides a couple of slow jams, especially the exquisite “-Fine Time” and the silky smooth “Love Is So Amazing,” New Beginning is
