", -, Hr Is VS-A' ' * .MvA1 s.?*.a - :r* • case of supply and demand, with farmers culling out the poorest and keeping the ones with the best genetic prospects. But in the Far East the number of Chinese milking cattle is decided by the local mayor, depending on what the government can afford.Once calf production reaches that limit the rest are sent out to be slaughtered. One of the main areas of concern in China is cattle nutrition. With 1.2 billion people and only nine per cent of the world’s arable land, feeding people, let alone cattle, is a challenge.“The result is the cattle seem to get whatever is available,” Riordon said.“A lot of that is residue from food processing plants. The only forage they seem to be getting is grass that has been cut from along the roadside.” He pointed out that cattle need a consistent diet in order to remain healthy and produce large quantities of milk. The more variation the more potential for health problems.“From what we have understood, digestive problems are probably the norm there,” said Berti Riordon, who has spent most of her life in the dairy industry. To illustrate the challenges facing China, Peter Riordon spoke of a Chinese government plan to add two eggs per week per family to the national diet. That meant buying more grain.Enough, in fact to equal Canada’s entire annual grain production. The trip to China is a one-year contract, with the understanding that they will stay for a second year.Peter Riordon pointed out that much of the first year is spent getting to understand how things are done in China, so the organizers prefer to send people who will stay for two years.“There’s a big learning curve,” he said.Riordon said he’s expecting to undergo a huge culture shock when they arrive in Shanghai in April. With most signs written in Chinese, the couple will be, in a way, illiterate. But the occasional English sign can be found, he said.“Unlike Quebec, English signs aren’t illegal in Shanghai.” Moving from the wide open spaces of the Townships to a city of 14 million people will also be somewhat claustrophobic, he added. The city is booming and the skyline is dotted with construction cranes. However, the Riordon’s won’t be there for the entire two-year period. They get to come home for part of the summer and at Christmas.“It is good to be able to get home in between so that we can get a little more space and keep contact with things here at home,” Berti said. The couple will also be able to keep contact with family through the Internet.Peter said the ’net will allow him to communicate regularly with his brother in Dunham and his niece in Indonesia. But one thing they won’t have to worry too much about is the language barrier. Many of the people they will be working with have been trained in Canada, and can act as translators when dealing with those who do not understand English.Over the next few months, the couple will be learning more about China, getting their affairs in order and mentally preparing themselves for their new adventure.T feel very strongly that we have always been a good team,” Berti said.“We work well together.” 20 yre.experte INSTALLATION jPJ REPAIRS PRE-WIRING MAINTENANCE PLAN 10% Donald & Larry Gagné discount for seniors and first time home owners.Call and start saving now! 514-243-0000 1-800-783-0933 Res./Fox: 242-2233 Tt -v LABRECQUE ROY YELLE INC.vv (DRAPER ft HAUSER) ASSURANCE GÉNÉRALE - GENERAL INSURANCE Juste au bout du fit Just a phone call away 106 rue Church St., COWANSVILLE (Québec) J2K 1TB Tel.: (514) 263-0110 Fax: (514) 263-6485 WELDrriÎHEATPE NOV 1 -7 SLEEPERS Brad Pitt, Robert De Niro D.Hoffman Daily: 7ft9:30 r 104 N.Main Si.St.Albans.Vt 802-527-7888 Canadian S at par DEAR GOD Daily: 7 ft 9 p.m.Sat.ft Sun.: 2 .m.PG FLY AWAY HOME Sat.ft Sun.: 2 p.m.LARGER THAN LIFE Bill Murray Dally: 7 ft 9 p.m.Sal.ft Sun.: 2 p.m.PG 1-800-465-4230 FALL FILM FESTIVAL CELESTIAL CLOCKWORK N/R Next Week.RANSOM ,vith Mel Gibson TAPIS COWANSVILLE 548 Riviere St.Cowansville 263-4622 UNO.RUGS.CERAMIC.DECOR ACCESSORIES — MHO.ME COUNTY NEWS — Wednesday, October 30, 1996 Brome County Community Billboard Arts Calendar Nov.2 Supper-Conference, held by ‘Les Amis de la Liberté’, a new non-political English organization, at the Auberge des Carrefours, Cowansville.Hot buffet supper at 6:30 p.m., followed at 8 p.m.with conference with guest speaker: Mr.Pierre Lemieux.Subject: Are we a society “Free and Democratic”.Tickets: $26 per person, tax inch for supper and conference.$10.at the door for conference only.Tickets available at Le Tournesol, 263-7857, Dépanneur Shefford, 534-2116, Knowlton Metro, 243-6155.Limited tickets! It can spring up on you as stealthily as a black cat on Halloween. One minute you’re engaged in a conversation about history class, the next you pull rank and demand to know why the paper wasn’t in on time.‘Never mind about the American Revolution, why weren’t you at the library Monday night?’ Mothers have a way of grabbing an idea that’s been tossed out for opinion and strangling it to death with one of those mother-tones like, ‘Don’t cut your hair’ - as though they had infinite rights to it.And we like to impose maternal authority where there are no social or legal restrictions.‘I’m sorry, you can’t go to the concert.I will not have you trampled to death in a mosh pit.’ There is probably some statute of height and weight limitations on when mothers lose their right to decide what a kid can put on to go to school in the morning, and when he should shave. But few mothers, Out of the Brome Closet By Sharon McCully including me, know when it kicks in.And certainly nobody has informed my mother, who continues to shower me with wise counsel.I stifled an attack of mother-mouth of my own this week when I nearly told my son, who is old enough to vote, not to wear that sweater with the sleeve out of it to the dentist’s office.(Gawd, 1 hope he didn’t.) It’s a daily challenge for mothers to watch our words because the moment a baby sees the light of day, mothers are imbued with a new child-management vocabulary: Be careful.Don’t touch that.Pick that up.You can’t wear that.Put on the blue one.Cut your hair.Let your hair grow.Where are you going? When are you coming back?Don’t eat that.Eat your vegetables.Take off your hat.Put on your hat.And sometime between the terrible twos and their teens, bright kids learn it’s easier to stop saying No, and start saying, Okay Mom, yeah mom, alright mom.ALRIGHT, MOM! Il reste cepedant à l’histoire de la prouver! an environment that allowed me to create distinctive patient follow-up programs and health promotion, activities that other towns might not have allowed.I will certainly miss my faithful cus- tomers, but sadly, today’s success seems to be based on profit more than on the quality of personalized service. So it’s with sadness in my soul that I will leave my store on Halloween.JEAN-FRANCOIS RICHARD Pharmacist Obonsoins Member 305 Knowlton Rd.Knowlton, Que.Tel: (514) 242-1444.The first one was completed in 1879 The churches of Dunkin village Phyllis Hamilton of Granby has written a book entitled With Heart and Hands and Voices, detailing the histories of more than 75 Protestant churches in the area between the Richelieu River and Lake Memphremagog. Some of the church histories could not be included in the book.Readers can enjoy them over the next few weeks in these pages.By Phyllis Hamilton DUNKIN CHURCHES PART 1 Nestled in the breathtakingly beautiful valley of the Missisquoi River, just north of Richford, Vermont, near Highwater and Glen Sutton, is the village of Dunkin. It was here, according to Cyrus Thomas, that colonel Hendrick Ruiter (originally referred to as de Ruyter), a Loyalist and leader of the settlers in Potton Township, established his home when he arrived in 1799.The following year, he built the first saw mill in the area and in 1801 he erected the first grist mill.He chose to settle here because it was a good spot to establish a trading station with the St.Francis Indians who used the local waterways as a transportation route.Ruiter was issued Letters Patent in 1803 and received 2400 acres as compensation for his losses from the American Revolution and as a reward for his loyalty to the Crown. He also received land on which to establish a cemetery, now named the Ruiter Settlement Cemetery.A tombstone bearing the inscription ‘Col.Hendrick Ruiter 1739-1819; Wife -Catherine Friott 1760-1819’ testifies to the fact that he and his second wife are buried there. The brook which passes through Dunkin village on its way to the nearby Missisquoi River also bears his name.Ruiter was more than 50 years old when he settled here and, with the help of his large family, cleared the heavily forested area where the village is today. The name of the village was changed from West Potton to Dunkin in 1895 at the suggestion of Edgar Barnett, a schoolteacher and outstanding citizen in the area. The new name was chosen in honor of the well-known Canadian, the Honourable Christopher Dunkin, the first post Confederation Federal Member of Parliament for Brome County and sponsor of the Dunkin Temperance Act of 1878.Religious services were first held in West Potton in the homes of settlers and the earliest known minister was the Rev.James Jennings.By 1870, services were being held in the schoolhouse by Elder B.S.Reynolds, an Evangelical Second Adventist minister.(Similar faith to the Baptist denomination). In 1871, Mark Elkins donated 3/8 acre of land on which to build a Union church and parsonage.Five years later, in 1876, a vote was taken which decided that Elder Reynolds should hold the deed on the land and the deed for the parsonage itself. The following names were recorded in that vote: Charles Barnett, Abraham and Jacob Ruiter, Chester Aiken, his sons, Samuel, Curtis, and Nelson from Glen Sutton, and his brother, Fred Aiken, C.S.Ruiter and Oliver Peabody. The parsonage was built that year by a “bee” organized by the local citizens.According to Marion Phelps’ article on Dunkin in ‘Yesterdays of Brome County, Vol.3,’ above the door of the parsonage was a sign in the form of an open Bible with ends of the white pages painted in gold and on the open pages was the name of Elder B.S.Reynolds to beckon the weary traveller to his door for spiritual uplift.” The deed for the church and parsonage land was finally executed on August 12, 1879, with the church represented by trustees from three different denominations - Lysander Peck, Romeo D.Leonard and Daniel Aiken, all of Potton Township. The largest contribution to the church building costs was from the wealthiest member of the congregation, Chase Gilman, Sr., who considered himself too old and feeble to help with the manual labour.O.B.Titus, who owned the local sawmill, gave much of the building materials and oversaw the construction, while R.D.Leonard, the chief carpenter, “took charge of the work under Titus.” Charles Barnett is listed as being the clerk-secretary of the church committee at the time. The Express and Standard’ newspaper of Newport, Vermont, reports on June 17, 1879, under the heading of West Potton: “A Union Church is in progress of erection here to supply a long felt need. The ladies started the good work, having accumulated about $40 with their voluntary collections in the church mite boxes. But for their aid, the enterprise would still have been slumbering." A few months later, under the dateline of November 4, 1879, in the same paper, the announcement is made: “The Union Church is completed, aside from painting, which is being done at the present writing. The church is to be dedicated on Thursday, the 26th of November.” Anyone wishing to purchase a copy of With Heart and Hands and Voices may do so by contacting the author at 55 Church St., Granby, Que.J2G 4S2.Tel: (514) 372-7558.Or the publisher at Price-Patterson Ltd., P.O.Box 711, Victoria Station, Westmount, Que.H3Z 2Y7.Tel: (514) 935-8154.Fax.:(514) 935-9241.E-Mail: 104414.3472 @ compuserve.com.H(V (VtmODVH! After over 10 years of getting women back into the workforce, Passage Yamaska, has been forced to close its doors because of government budget cuts. The ministry of Human Resources Development cut the program, stating that it wanted to focus its diminishing funds on the Employment Insurance system. But Passage Yamaska co-ordinator Louise Gagnon-Lessard said workers are looking for ways to revive the program, at least in a reduced form.Workers are now searching for new ways to fund the program.“Over the last 10 years the organization has maintained an over 80 per cent average in placing its clientele in new jobs,” Gagnon-Lessard said.“It has allowed women to improve their lives and take part in the economic life of the community.” Passage Yamaska has helped unemployed women, many of them mothers, get back to work.Gagnon-Lessard said that meant fewer women were depending on government hand outs like welfare and there were more people paying taxes.“If you have been out of the workforce for two years, it can be difficult to get back in,” she said.“Imagine what that’s like after 15 years.” In the Passage Yamaska program, the women signed up are paid minimum wage during a 12-week training program aimed at giving them new skills and finding them jobs. Some 30 per cent of the program’s clientele were recipients of government assistance.Reading is Fundamental Listen to what your children have to say.Promote inquiring minds by encouraging them to ask questions.A Forever Story Who could forget the timeless story of Christmas, as it is passed from generation to generation? Now the sacred moment of Jesus’ birth is told in a magical new way.And richly portrayed on the expressive faces of Precious Moments nativity figurines by Enesco.Stop by our store today to see the newest nativity additions.Forever memories begin with Precious Moments Christmas gifts and figurines.A ^ekjeôco HOURS: Mon.-Fri.8:30-7 p.m.Sat.8:30-6 p.m.Closed Sunday Knightes VS.Pharmacy The Switchyard Shopping Center St.Albans, Vermont (802) 524-3085 5th ANNUAL EASTMAN ANTIQUE SHOW The 5th Annual Eastman Antique Show will take place Nov.2 & 3rd at the Eastman Parish Hall in the Eastern Townships. Some 15 antique dealers from the surrounding region will offer their finest pieces such as Quebec style furniture and other, china, popular art, quilts, weaved rugs, toys and other antiques. In addition, there will be a demonstration of antique furniture restoring techniques.La Société Québécoise des Collectionneurs de Radios Anciens Inc.will present an unprecendented exhibition of old radios from the 1920’s to 1940’s.The show will be open Sat.10 a.m.- 8 p.m.and Sun.11 a.m.- 5 p.m.ADMISSION FREE.Dining room • Refreshments served.FOR MORE INFORMATION CALL: (514) 297-4475.1996 EASTMAN QUEBEC EASTMAN CHURCH HALL Sal.Nov.2: 10 a.m.- 8 p.m.Sun.Nov.3:11 a.m.- 5 p.m.ft” COME ADMIRE OUR COLLECTION PRESENTED BY THE QUEBEC SOCIETY OF ANTIQUE RADIO Guichet automatique Desjardins Eastman Cadeaux / Artisanal / Antiquités Into touristique ?Tel.: (514) 297-2911 350, Principale.C.P.63.Eastman, QC JOE 1P0 Chanbrc dt ummerac CUmVi of Commerça Atelier Ha $elle Gueule he $otô 2578 Rte 112 Canton Magog (819) 843-0049 antiquités Che?Jfflanbp-ann 3712 Main St.Dunham (514) 295-3434 antiquités Rosalie 336 Principale Eastman (514) 297-4475 m antiquités He (^renter be fêranb-jïlère 1011 Road 219 Hemmingford (514) 247-3779 antiquités &axb|> 222 Saxby South Canton de Shefford (514) 378-2048 $outique Smagtne 47 Bellevue Compton (819) 835-5242 I ' *Y Antiquités Stan Coates 212 Queen St.Lcnnoxville (819) 565-9166 Hes 5 Hucafenes Antiques 368 Rte 143 Ulverton (819)826-3750 Classique antiques 164 Queen, Suite 103 .Lennoxville (819) 823-8877
