The RECORD - Wednesday, November 13, 1996 Happy Birthday Hazel Knowles V, : Pi warn » .*3-' Celebrating in October 1996 the 97th birthday of Mrs.Hazel Knowles, a resident of the Wales Home, Richmond, are her son Mac, grandson Chris and great-grandson Ryan, all of Carleton Place, Ont.Women’s Missionary Fellowship of Grace Chapel STANSTEAD — A service of Holy Eucharist took place in Christ Anglican Church on Sunday morning, November 3 for the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Ordination to the Anglican priesthood of Rev.Roy Peirce, Rector Emerites of Christ Church in Stanstead.It also marked All Saints day.For the occasion Right Reverend Bruce S ta vert, Lord Bishop of the Diocese of Quebec, Peirce family members, members and friends of the Greater parish of Coaticook, (seven church congregations, of which Christ church is one) gathered for the service at 10:30 a.m., followed by a reception in the Parish Hall.Rev.Peirce, along with Rev.Canon Curtis Patterson and Bishop Bruce, conducted (he service with greetings and comments spoken by the (’anon and the Bishop.who read the First Lesson; Frances Molony, the Second Lesson, and Rev.Patterson, The Gospel.The choir was composed of singers from Ayer’s Cliff, North Hatley and Stanstead churches, accompanied by Thelma Middleton on the organ.Mrs.Hewseon from Lennoxville played the choir anthem “What are these.” Scott Morrell was Server, and Matthew Patterson, crucifer.Barbara Wintle assisted during the service as Lay Reader.Rev.Peirce said, “I was supposed to give the sermon today.” The celebration had been kept secret from him, so it was a complete surprise until he arrived for the service that morning.However, he spoke re-meniscing about his ordination 50 years ago on All Saints day when a solemn and impressive ceremony took place in St.Matthew’s Church in Quebec and he was ordained to the priesthood of the Church of God according to the ordinal of the Church of England in Canada.Rev.Dr.Philip Carrington, Archbishop of Quebec officiated.It also marked the 60th anniversary of Rev.Bishop Lennox Waldron Williams, at that time Curate of St.Matthew’s, who had been ordained to the priesthood in the same church.Rev.Peirce stated at that service 50 years ago, “that ordination has always a peculiar beauty and solemnity for it is sending forth of the Ordained a special commission upon a special mission”.Certainly Rev.Peirce has fulfilled and accomplished this mission.Another highlight in the service was the presentation of three ACW life memberships in appreciation of work done through the years.The three are Joan Peirce, Helen McLeod and Miriam Osborne, however, Miriam, a patient in the Magog Hospital, was presented with her pin there along with a bouquet of flowers that were on the Altar for this service.The ceremony was conducted by Mrs.Curtis Patterson, Thelma Middleton and Jean West.The Lord Bishop also dedicated a beautiful wooden memorial plaque in the church.There are several brass plates with names in memory of deceased persons who were actively involved in the life and work of Christ church.The Bishop spoke about Rev.Peirce who had served as Padre in the Armed Forces, and came to Stanstead in the 1970’s.Later he was chaplain at Stanstead College.He is now retired and continues as Rector Emerites at Christ church.Rev.Peirce spoke words of appreciation for the wonderful day, gifts and sentiments.Alfred Middleton and Malcolm Molony, Rector’s and People’s Wardens on behalf of friends, presented Rev.Peirce with the gift of a green chasule.The service concluded by the singing of the hymn “Now thank we all our God.“ The reception was held in the Parish Hall where members of Christ church ACW - Guild served a buffet.The Lord Bishop spoke the Blessing and dedicated the Parish hall.The large square anniversary cake, made by Thelma Middleton was decorated by Ruby Sheldon, iced in white with yellow roses, a golden 50, a small testament and inscription.The initial cut was made by Rev.Peirce who was surrounded by his grandchildren.The regular monthly meeting of the Women’s Missionary Fellowship was held Monday evening November 4th at Grace Chapel.Edna Walker’s group was in charge so Edna welcomed all who had come and asked Virginia Strout to accompany us on the iano as we sang ‘A Shelter in the time of storm’ following which Philippa Allatt opened the meeting with prayer.Mildred gave the missionary report and mentioned the need for prayer for the container for Nigeria sent in May still held in Rotterdam for inspection.She also mentioned that the container sent to Angola the end of September was due to arrive November 4th.There is a need for special prayer for the situation in Zaire, Burundi and Rwanda with the tribal war.Bea Stark and Virginia Strout then led the group in a time of prayer.Laurie Strout came forward and introduced her friend Hettie Bigley who is at Word of Life Bethel studying French before going out to Malii.Hettie favoured us with her first number ‘Surely the Presence of the Lord is in this place.’ Our special speaker for the evening was Carrol Jordan who with her husband Paul is studying French at Word of Life Bethel before going to Senegal with Wycliffe Bible Translators to work on the translation of the Bible for people in that country who do not yet have any portion of the Scriptures in their own language.Carrol gave testimony to the faithfulness of God and how he had led her first to Zaire.Eater she came home for further education with regard to languages and met her husband.Since then the Lord has led (hem both step by step sometimes through very difficult experiences and yet acknowledging always God’s faithfulness especially with regard to their 2nd daughter who has been diagnosed with a medical problem.Yet they can praise God for His faithfulness as they have seen Hia hand working on their behalf for this little one.As they continue the study of French they need our prayers as the Lord continues to lead them step by step.At this point Hettie Bigley came forward and rendered her second solo ‘He’s Been Faithful’.Hostesses for the evening were Edna Walker, May Povey and Philippa Allatt.Assisting were Douglas Cass Left to Right: Rev.Canon Curtis Patterson, Rev.Roy Peirce, Barbara Wintle Lay Reader, Bishop Bruce Stavert.ACW Life members left: Mrs.Ray (Joan) Peirce, Jean West, Mrs.C.Patterson.Right: Mrs.Helene McLeod.Missing Miriam Osborne.¦ E < -I The RECORD -
