they’re wide-eyed, cheap plastic dolls with stringy hair and no nose and are simply too ugly to buy.I settled for the lesser of many Sailor Moon evils and allowed them to hear the show’s soundtrack because I wanted my kids to appreciate COUNTRY DANCE at BAR WILDWOOD 680 Haskellhill, Lennoxville Sunday, December 8, 2 p.m.Part of The Record — Videotron “CHRISTMAS BASKET CAMPAIGN” Proceeds go to RAME Réseau d’appui aux familles monoparentales de l’Estrie and Lennoxville and District Women’s Center pUR€ cm tàiSz COUNTliV and sÿMnnoo Non-stop music Door Prizes No admission charge A food basket will be at the entrance for your donations Information: (819) 569-6600 Stop this girl before she destroys your family. It was scary, but I persisted and the furor slowly died down.I’m happy to report that my daughter finally bathed and now walks around with a clean forehead, and my son changed the message on his picket sign to “Rebel without a cause.” (I think that’s what it said. He’s only three. He can’t really write yet.) So parents, do not under any circumstances allow your children to watch Sailor Moon.Learn from my mistake, and hopefully you’ll never have to explain to your children that our national anthem existed long before the Sailor Moon soundtrack was recorded, that in real life little girls are not miraculously bestowed with super powers, and that the only rea- son Mom sings Sailor Moon songs in the shower is because she’s having a bit of a nervous breakdown.Trust me on this one.Sailor-Moon will permeate every single aspect of your life.Stop it before it happens to you.The RECORD — TOWNSHIPS WEEK — December 6-13, 1996 — 3 [TALK OF THE TOWNSHIPS Keep kids away from substandard Sailor Moon cNnSas (P/ouorounâ By Linda Galeazzi and listen to music. After all, I owned a dozen Patridge Family albums when I was a kid and I turned out fine, so I thought, what harm can the Sailor Moon soundtrack do?I soon realized that the CD is filled with catchy little pop songs that are directly plagiarized from other songs.“Call My Name (And I’ll Be There)” sounds like the Friends theme song, and “Oh Starry Night” sounds just like 0 Canada, our beloved national anthem.Blasphemy, I say! Tragically, the songs were so damned catchy that even I found myself humming them in the shower. To make a long anecdote short, my kids were addicted to the show for about two weeks before I put my foot down and insisted they stop watching it.My daughter, who was obviously in need of a suitable female role model, was particularly distressed. She painted a frowning face on her little Crayola half-moon and wore it everywhere, even to the grocery store. My son, who didn’t really watch the show so much as stare blankly at the screen, joined in the protest and marched around the living room with a picket sign that read, “Up with the Sailor Scouts! Down with Mom!” 4 - The RECORD — TOWNSHIPS WEEK — December 6-13, 1996 TALK OF THE TOWNSHIPS_______________ ] Sursaut show is not your typical Nutcracker Adam Dymburt and a young company member in a scene from Sursaut’s Nutcracker as it was performed three years ago.mtrnmmmm I *«**»;> W# § $* *, mm By A fra Saskia Tucker Record correspondent LENNOXVILLE - Three years ago, programmers of the University of Sherbrooke’s Centre Culturel suggested that the Sherbrooke-based dance company, Sursaut, perform an adaption of The Nutcracker Suite. The original plan was to bring in Les Grands Ballet Canadiens but that wasn’t possible because the company does not tour outside of Montreal, Quebec City or Ottawa. That prompted the creation of a new adaption of The Nutcracker, which could be performed in medium to large theatres outside the major metropolitan areas in Quebec, by the Sursaut troupe.Adam Dymburt has worked with Sursaut for 11 years as a dancer, administrative director and assistant to artistic direction.“When we decided to do this we were not a ballet company, so it’s not a traditional ballet we’re doing,” said Dymburt, “We researched the original story called The Nutcracker and the King of Rats by E.T.Hoffmann and we decided to adapt it to a Québécois setting in the 1950s.The set for the first part of the réveillon when they’re celebrating Christmas eve is (that oD a modest Québécois family; it’s not a big posh household like in most traditional ballets. It’s a very working-class family -which doesn’t take at all away from the magic of The Nutcracker.” Sursaut is not a traditional ballet company, thus adding yet another new flavor to its rendition of the Nutcracker ballet.“We’re a modern contemporary dance company,” stated Dymburt, “There are people en pointe, it’s just that the spirit of the show is not traditional ballet. There’s a lot of modern and contemporary dance. But we do have elements of ballet.” The ballet’s Tchaikovsky music, orchestrated by René Béchard from Sherbrooke, was played live by 21 musi- cians at Sursaut’s first performance in 1994.“What we use now is a compact disc of a recording,” said Dymburt, “but it’s Tchaikovsky, it’s the traditional music. There are little bits that are adapted. We wanted to give it a little bit of a Québécois flavor. For instance in the réveillon when they’re celebrating Christmas eve, there is a little bit of rigodon. But it’s still totally recognizable.” The first time the company went on tour across the province with The Nutcracker, it attracted an estimated 12 to 13,000 people. The company hopes to draw a crowd of the same size this year even though the dancers will be performing in smaller auditoriums. This year, they will be going to Amos, New Richmond and Gatineau which are big stages with small seating capacities. The dance company itself has been in existence for over 10 years. It tours the province, performing shows for many young audiences, families and also does a lot of experimental work.“Even our other show for kids has a lot of experimental work,” Dymburt said.“There is a lot of experimental work in this Nutcracker. There are some traditional dance moves but there are a lot of moves that are not traditional at all. It’s the choreographer’s style. We use gymnastics, juggling - it’s very creative and we’re trying to be accessible, not to scare people away.Dance is a very hard sell so we try not to be too esoteric.” Francine Châtovert is Sursaut’s choreographer for The Nutcracker. Her formal training started 25 years ago as a gymnast and she became interested in dance only later in her career. Most of her training is in contemporary dance along with some classical and acrobatic background. Her choreography involves a lot of swift movements and actions, she feels that choreographs in general should be lively.Being part of Sursaut is a full-time job for many people, including Adam Dymburt and the group feels that, being Sherbrooke’s only professional dance company, it should be better appreciated and recognized.“We’re the one and only dance company outside of Montreal and Quebec City with an operating grant from the Conseil des Arts de Québec.I think people here should be happy that (Sursaut) exists. It stimulates the economy, it brings people into Sherbrooke, it’s culturally enriching,” stated Dymburt, “But the bottom line is it’s a nice Christmas show.” The dance troupe will be performing at Salle Maurice O’Bready at the University of Sherbrooke on Dec.6 at 7:30 p.m.and Dec.8 at 2 p.m.ikliVj presents a Bishop's University Drama Department Production of (Cfjrtstoras Carol Featuring David Francis as “Scrooge” December 4 to 8, 1996 • Centennial Theatre, Lennoxville December 4-7: All performances at 8 P.M.• December 8: 4:30 matinee only Adults $10 • Students $7 For information and group bookings, please call (819) 822-9692.ROYAL BANK Sponsored by The City of Lennoxville, L celebrating its 125"' Birthday ^ .The Glory of Song: The Ensemble Vocal Amadeus de TEstrie will sing their latest concert, Gloria in excelsis, on Saturday, Dec.14, at 8p.m.at St.Peter’s Church, 200 Montreal St.in Sherbrooke.Conducted by André Martin, the concert will feature organist Pamela Gill Eby and pianist Cheryl Stroud.Works by Buxtehude, Berlioz, d’Aquin, Gounod, Langlais and Willan will be performed.Tickets cost $18 reserved seating, $15 general admission and $10 for students. For tickets or more information, call (819) 569-8546 or 846-4369. The RECORD — TOWNSHIPS WEEK — December 6-13, 1996 — 5 ICOYER Love for Townships traditions mark LeBaron’s art ™.5WUlW*,r" « 4; By Sunil Mahtani NORTH HATLEY - Give her an inch, she’ll make you smile.Be it her brightly colored, richly detailed oil paintings or her charming gift shop chock full of goodies, Naisi LeBaron fills every square inch with color and warmth, a feeling of nostalgia and a sense of humor. The shop is Pomegranate and like the multitude of seeds in that tropical fruit, LeBaron’s store is simply stuffed - pottery, toys, dishes, figurines, clothing, jewelry and books. Is there anything LeBaron doesn’t have?If there is, it’s certainly not missed. After meeting the woman herself, another question pops to mind: Is there anything LeBaron doesn’t do?The naïf artist paints both traditional tableaus and furniture. She restores antique trays using the lost art of stenciling. She also quilts -all while running between her upstairs home and downstairs shop.LeBaron is one of a dozen artists currently featured in a group show at the North Hatley library through Jan.4, but don’t expect her works to remain there for long. She sells them almost as fast as she paints them. Her work is familiar to anyone who’s visited galleries in North Hatley and Lennoxville, as well as the Piggery Theatre in Ste-Catherine-de-Hatley, where she often exhibits. The theatre commissioned one of her paintings for last summer’s season poster. Her most recent project was the production of five greeting cards featuring depictions of her favorite paintings.FRESH, FANCIFUL LeBaron’s tableaus and painted furniture are easily identifiable. They are fresh and fanciful, emitting a love for the Eastern Townships, down-to-earth living and bygone days.A sense of fun is also highly present in LeBaron’s work.“I love to do funerals,” she said quite seriously amidst the motley collage that is her shop.“But I always have the two guys who have just dug the hole having a cigarette on the side, that kind of thing. There’s always two sides to these things.” Funeral paintings aren’t common sights in the normally cheery world of naïf art, but it seems to work for LeBaron, who takes her inspiration from Life in all its ‘The hills are always there and the lake,’says Naisi LeBaron of the Townships.‘It’s just part of who I am.’ forms. One of the common threads in her work is North Hatley itself. Many of her tableaus depict the familiar lush green landscape dotted with picturesque cottages, Lake Massawippi filled with colorful swimmers and boating enthusiasts and, of course, Dreamland Park with its charming gazebo.“That’s where I grew up,” LeBaron said with a warm smile.“It was wonderful, absolutely idyllic in a sense. My brothers and sisters and I were outside all the time, either on the lake, in the woods, creating our own play and I think that’s part of what comes through in my paintings. The hills are always there and the lake. It’s just part of who I am.” North Hatley is a significant part of LeBaron’s personal history, and her family is an integral part of the history of the village itself. As one of the village’s founding families, the LeBarons have always been intensely involved in the community and have played an immeasurable role in shaping the quality of life found in North Hatley.“My parents were very involved helping with the library and other things,” said LeBaron.“Dreamland Park was donated by my grandmother to the town and the big white house (behind it) was my grandparents’.” There is also the LeBaron’s grocery store, passed on to her sister Joey from her father and grandfather.LeBaron said it is a sense of family that has kept her in North Hatley and the Townships.“My mother’s 84 and she’s still here.Four of the five of us (siblings) live here.” Many of the scenes in LeBaron’s work are memories culled from her childhood.“There’s a painting in this group show, a friend came in and said, ‘Wow, it’s just like the 50s.It’s just like when I was a kid’.It’s a snowball fight. That’s what I paint, these things that happened to me when I was a kid.‘My kids are all watching television but that’s what it was like when I was a kid’.” It can be said LeBaron’s paintings simply make people feel good, but it also enriches the artist’s life.“It’s made quite a difference in general,” said LeBaron, who began painting her tableaus just 10 years ago after more than two decades of decorating furniture.“(Life) is much more fun, to be able to say I can paint all day upstairs when the store is slow and that kind of thing.” LeBaron describes the process of painting as “pure pleasure”.“I paint probably six to eight hours a day in the winter. In the summer, the store's too busy.I paint almost every day and most evenings.I love it.Once I start, I can’t stop,” said LeBaron with wide eyes.“I usually have several on the go.My kids complain they can’t sit down anywhere. And I usually have a few pieces of furniture I’m working on at the same time as that, so they get frustrated.” LeBaron said she takes about a month to complete three or four paintings because she uses a very thin concoction of oil paints mixed with varnish. Each addition to the paintings needs to dry on the Masonite overnight, allowing her to work on another one in the meantime. The thinness of the paints resembles acrylics, but LeBaron said she will not switch from oils, health be darned! “A lot of people are switching to acrylics for health reasons - the use of turpentines, varnish, it’s in the air, you put your paint brush in your mouth to hold it - but acrylic handles differently, you get different colors, I keep coming back to oils.” LeBaron’s interest in naif art began to flourish when she started taking a stenciling course with Janet Gayle in Lennoxville 15 years ago.“We did a lot of traditional stencils and they tend to lead to naif art,” she said.‘There’s a lot of naif art involved in stenciling. The old traditional stencils were like naif paintings, so that’s what started me being interested in it.” LeBaron still attends that class on stenciling, carrying on a Townships tradition.“Janet Gayle learned how to do it from my aunt,” said LeBaron, who meets the group in Lennoxville once a week in the wintertime.“We always call it our therapy because the women, it happens to be all women, go from my age to women in their 80s and it’s just wonderful because everybody shares the same joy of painting, but everybody comes from different life backgrounds and we share that as well, have lunch together, talk, and if someone is ill, everybody cares and does something.” It is this affection for the Townships and its people, which exudes from the art and the life of Naisi LeBaron, that is the simple secret of her success. 6 -
